The parabolic p-Laplacian with fractional differentiability

We study the parabolic $p$-Laplacian system in a bounded domain. We deduce optimal convergence rates for the space-time discretization based on an implicit Euler scheme in time. Our estimates are expressed in terms of Nikolskii spaces and therefore cover situations when the (gradient of) the solution has only fractional derivatives in space and time. The main novelty is that, different to all previous results, we do not assume any coupling condition between the space and time resolution $h$ and $τ$. The theoretical error analysis is complemented by numerical experiments.

On the threshold condition for Dörfler marking

It is an open question if the threshold condition $θ< θ_\star$ for the Dörfler marking parameter is necessary to obtain optimal algebraic rates of adaptive finite element methods. We present a (non-PDE) example fitting into the common abstract convergence framework (axioms of adaptivity) and which is potentially converging with exponential rates. However, for Dörfler marking $θ> θ_\star$ the algebraic converges rate can be made arbitrarily small.

Elliptic Equations With Degenerate weights

We obtain new local Calderon-Zygmund estimates for elliptic equations with matrix-valued weights for linear as well as non-linear equations. We introduce a novel log-BMO condition on the weight M. In particular, we assume smallness of the logarithm of the matrix-valued weight in BMO. This allows to include degenerate, discontinuous weights. We provide examples that show the sharpness of the estimates in terms of the log-BMO-norm.

The Lipschitz truncation of functions of bounded variation

We construct a Lipschitz truncation which approximates functions of bounded variation in the area-strict metric. The Lipschitz truncation changes the original function only on a small set similar to Lusin's theorem. Previous results could only give estimates on the Lebesgue measure of the set where the Lipschitz approximations differ from the original function.

New Examples on Lavrentiev Gap Using Fractals

Zhikov showed 1986 with his famous checkerboard example that functionals with variable exponents can have a Lavrentiev gap. For this example it was crucial that the exponent had a saddle point whose value was exactly the dimension. In 1997 he extended this example to the setting of the double phase potential. Again it was important that the exponents crosses the dimensional threshold. Therefore, it was conjectured that the dimensional threshold plays an important role for the Lavrentiev gap. We show that this is not the case. Using fractals we present new examples for the Lavrentiev gap and non-density of smooth functions. We apply our method to the setting of variable exponents, the double phase potential and weighted p-energy.

Higher Order Calderon-Zygmund Estimates for the p-Laplace Equation

The paper is concerned with higher order Calderon-Zygmund estimates for the $p$-Laplace equation $$ -\textrm{div}(A(\nabla u)) := -\textrm{div}{(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)}=-\textrm{div} F, \qquad 1<p<\infty. $$ We are able to transfer local interior Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin regularity up to first order derivatives from the force term $F$ to the flux $A(\nabla u)$. For $p\geq 2$ we show that $F \in B^s_{ρ,q}$ implies $A(\nabla u) \in B^s_{ρ,q}$ for any $s \in (0,1)$ and all reasonable $ρ,q \in (0,\infty]$ in the planar case. The result fails for $p<2$. In case of higher dimensions and systems we have a smallness restriction on $s$. The quasi-Banach case $0<\min\{ρ,q\} < 1$ is included, since it has important applications in the adaptive finite element analysis. As an intermediate step we prove new linear decay estimates for $p$-harmonic functions in the plane for the full range $1<p<\infty$.

Global Schauder estimates for the $p$-Laplace system

An optimal first-order global regularity theory, in spaces of functions defined in terms of oscillations, is established for solutions to Dirichlet problems for the $p$-Laplace equation and system, with right-hand side in divergence form. The exact mutual dependence among the regularity of the solution, of the datum on the right-hand side, and of the boundary of the domain in these spaces is exhibited. A comprehensive formulation of our results is given in terms of Campanato seminorms. New regularity results in customary function spaces, such as Hölder, $\mathrm{BMO}$ and $\mathrm{VMO}$ spaces, follow as a consequence. Importantly, the conclusions are new even in the linear case when $p=2$, and hence the differential operator is the plain Laplacian. Yet in this classical linear setting, our contribution completes and augments the celebrated Schauder theory in Hölder spaces, and complements the Jerison-Kenig gradient theory in Lebesgue spaces with a parallel in the oscillation spaces realm. The sharpness of our results is demonstrated by apropos examples.

On the Trace Operator for Functions of Bounded $\mathbb{A}$-Variation

In this paper, we consider the space $\mathrm{BV}^{\mathbb A}(Ω)$ of functions of bounded $\mathbb A$-variation. For a given first order linear homogeneous differential operator with constant coefficients $\mathbb A$, this is the space of $L^1$--functions $u:Ω\rightarrow\mathbb R^N$ such that the distributional differential expression $\mathbb A u$ is a finite (vectorial) Radon measure. We show that for Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\mathbb R^{n}$, $\mathrm{BV}^{\mathbb A}(Ω)$-functions have an $L^1(\partialΩ)$-trace if and only if $\mathbb A$ is $\mathbb C$-elliptic (or, equivalently, if the kernel of $\mathbb A$ is finite dimensional). The existence of an $L^1(\partialΩ)$-trace was previously only known for the special cases that $\mathbb A u$ coincides either with the full or the symmetric gradient of the function $u$ (and hence covered the special cases $\mathrm{BV}$ or $\mathrm{BD}$). As a main novelty, we do not use the fundamental theorem of calculus to construct the trace operator (an approach which is only available in the $\mathrm{BV}$- and $\mathrm{BD}$-setting) but rather compare projections onto the nullspace as we approach the boundary. As a sample application, we study the Dirichlet problem for quasiconvex variational functionals with linear growth depending on $\mathbb A u$.

Unconditional stability of semi-implicit discretizations of singular flows

A popular and efficient discretization of evolutions involving the singular $p$-Laplace operator is based on a factorization of the differential operator into a linear part which is treated implicitly and a regularized singular factor which is treated explicitly. It is shown that an unconditional energy stability property for this semi-implicit time stepping strategy holds. Related error estimates depend critically on a required regularization parameter. Numerical experiments reveal reduced experimental convergence rates for smaller regularization parameters and thereby confirm that this dependence cannot be avoided in general.

Regularity for parabolic systems of Uhlenbeck type with Orlicz growth

We study the local regularity of $p$-caloric functions or more generally of $ϕ$-caloric functions. In particular, we study local solutions of non-linear parabolic systems with homogeneous right hand side, where the leading terms has Uhlenbeck structure of Orlicz type. This paper closes the gap of [22] where Liebermann proved that if the gradient of a solution is bounded, it is Hölder continuous. The crucial step is a novel local estimates for the gradient of the solutions, which generalize and improve the pioneering estimates of DiBenedetto and Friedman [12,10] for the $p$-Laplace heat equation.

Trace-free Korn inequalities in Orlicz spaces

Necessary and sufficient conditions are exhibited for a Korn type inequality to hold between (possibly different) Orlicz norms of the gradient of vector-valued functions and of the deviatoric part of their symmetric gradients. As a byproduct of our approach, a positive answer is given to the question of the necessity of the same sufficient conditions in related Korn type inequalities for the full symmetric gradient, for negative Orlicz-Sobolev norms, and for the gradient of the Bogovskii operator.

The inverse of the divergence operator on perforated domains with applications to homogenization problems for the compressible Navier-Stokes system

We study the inverse of the divergence operator on a domain $Ω\subset R^3$ perforated by a system of tiny holes. We show that such inverse can be constructed on the Lebesgue space $L^p(Ω)$ for any $1< p < 3$, with a norm independent of perforation, provided the holes are suitably small and their mutual distance suitably large. Applications are given to problems arising in homogenization of steady compressible fluid flows.

Existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity results for very weak solutions to nonlinear elliptic systems

We establish existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity results for very weak solutions to certain nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems. We introduce structural asymptotic assumptions of Uhlenbeck type on the nonlinearity, which are sufficient and in many cases also necessary for building such a theory. We provide a unified approach that leads qualitatively to the same theory as that one available for linear elliptic problems with continuous coeffcients, e.g. the Poisson equation. The result is based on several novel tools that are of independent interest: local and global estimates for (non)linear elliptic systems in weighted Lebesgue spaces with Muckenhoupt weights, a generalization of the celebrated div{curl lemma for identification of a weak limit in border line spaces and the introduction of a Lipschitz approximation that is stable in weighted Sobolev spaces.

Pointwise Calderón-Zygmund gradient estimates for the $p$-Laplace system

Pointwise estimates for the gradient of solutions to the $p$-Laplace system with right-hand side in divergence form are established. They enable us to develop a nonlinear counterpart of the classical Calderón-Zygmund theory in terms of Calderón-Zygmund singular integrals, for the Laplacian. As a consequence, a flexible, comprehensive approach to gradient bounds for the $p$-Laplace system for a broad class of norms is derived. In particular, new gradient estimates are exhibited, and well-known results in customary function spaces are easily recovered.

Instance optimality of the adaptive maximum strategy

In this paper, we prove that the standard adaptive finite element method with a (modified) `maximum marking strategy' is `instance optimal' for the `total error', being the sum of the energy error and the oscillation. This result will be derived in the model setting of Poisson's equation on a polygon, linear finite elements, and conforming triangulations created by newest vertex bisection.

Besov regularity of solutions to the p-Poisson equation

In this paper, we study the regularity of solutions to the $p$-Poisson equation for all $1<p<\infty$. In particular, we are interested in smoothness estimates in the adaptivity scale $ B^σ_τ(L_τ(Ω))$, $1/τ= σ/d+1/p$, of Besov spaces. The regularity in this scale determines the order of approximation that can be achieved by adaptive and other nonlinear approximation methods. It turns out that, especially for solutions to $p$-Poisson equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on bounded polygonal domains, the Besov regularity is significantly higher than the Sobolev regularity which justifies the use of adaptive algorithms. This type of results is obtained by combining local Hölder with global Sobolev estimates. In particular, we prove that intersections of locally weighted Hölder spaces and Sobolev spaces can be continuously embedded into the specific scale of Besov spaces we are interested in. The proof of this embedding result is based on wavelet characterizations of Besov spaces.
