Approximate robust output regulation of boundary control systems

We extend the internal model principle for systems with boundary control and boundary observation, and construct a robust controller for this class of systems. However, as a consequence of the internal model principle, any robust controller for a plant with infinite-dimensional output space necessarily has infinite-dimensional state space. We proceed to formulate the approximate robust output regulation problem and present a finite-dimensional controller structure to solve it. Our main motivating example is a wave equation on a bounded multidimensional spatial domain with force control and velocity observation at the boundary. In order to illustrate the theoretical results, we construct an approximate robust controller for the wave equation on an annular domain and demonstrate its performance with numerical simulations.

Reduced Order Internal Models in the Frequency Domain

The internal model principle states that all robustly regulating controllers must contain a suitably reduplicated internal model of the signal to be regulated. Using frequency domain methods, we show that the number of the copies may be reduced if the class of perturbations in the problem is restricted. We present a two stage design procedure for a simple controller containing a reduced order internal model achieving robust regulation. The results are illustrated with an example of a five tank laboratory process where a restricted class of perturbations arises naturally.

Robust Regulation of Infinite-Dimensional Port-Hamiltonian Systems

We will give general sufficient conditions under which a controller achieves robust regulation for a boundary control and observation system. Utilizing these conditions we construct a minimal order robust controller for an arbitrary order impedance passive linear port-Hamiltonian system. The theoretical results are illustrated with a numerical example where we implement a controller for a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beam with boundary controls and boundary observations.

Asymptotics for infinite systems of differential equations

This paper investigates the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to certain infinite systems of ordinary differential equations. In particular, we use results from ergodic theory and the asymptotic theory of $C_0$-semigroups to obtain a characterisation, in terms of convergence of certain Cesàro averages, of those initial values which lead to convergent solutions. Moreover, we obtain estimates on the rate of convergence for solutions whose initial values satisfy a stronger ergodic condition. These results rely on a detailed spectral analysis of the operator describing the system, which is made possible by certain structural assumptions on the operator. The resulting class of systems is sufficiently broad to cover a number of important applications, including in particular both the so-called robot rendezvous problem and an important class of platoon systems arising in control theory. Our method leads to new results in both cases.

Robust Controllers for Regular Linear Systems with Infinite-Dimensional Exosystems

We construct two error feedback controllers for robust output tracking and disturbance rejection of a regular linear system with nonsmooth reference and disturbance signals. We show that for sufficiently smooth signals the output converges to the reference at a rate that depends on the behaviour of the transfer function of the plant on the imaginary axis. In addition, we construct a controller that can be designed to achieve robustness with respect to a given class of uncertainties in the system, and present a novel controller structure for output tracking and disturbance rejection without the robustness requirement. We also generalize the internal model principle for regular linear systems with boundary disturbance and for controllers with unbounded input and output operators. The construction of controllers is illustrated with an example where we consider output tracking of a nonsmooth periodic reference signal for a two-dimensional heat equation with boundary control and observation, and with periodic disturbances on the boundary.

Robust Output Regulation for Continuous-Time Periodic Systems

We consider controller design for robust output tracking and disturbance rejection for continuous-time periodic linear systems with periodic reference and disturbance signals. As our main results we present four different controllers: A feedforward control law and a discrete-time dynamic error feedback controller for output tracking and disturbance rejection, a robust discrete-time feedback controller, and finally a discrete-time feedback controller that achieves approximate robust output tracking and disturbance rejection. The presented constructions are also new for time-invariant finite and infinite-dimensional systems. The results are illustrated with two examples: A periodically time-dependent system of harmonic oscillators and a nonautonomous two-dimensional heat equation with boundary disturbance.

Controller Design for Robust Output Regulation of Regular Linear Systems

We present three dynamic error feedback controllers for robust output regulation of regular linear systems. These controllers are (i) a minimal order robust controller for exponentially stable systems (ii) an observer-based robust controller and (iii) a new internal model based robust controller structure. In addition, we present two controllers that are by construction robust with respect to predefined classes of perturbations. The results are illustrated with an example where we study robust output tracking of a sinusoidal reference signal for a two-dimensional heat equation with boundary control and observation.

The Internal Model Principle for Systems with Unbounded Control and Observation

In this paper the theory of robust output regulation of distributed parameter systems with infinite-dimensional exosystems is extended for plants with unbounded control and observation. As the main result, we present the internal model principle for linear infinite-dimensional systems with unbounded input and output operators. We do this for two different definitions of an internal model found in the literature, namely, the p-copy internal model and the $\mathcal{G}$-conditions. We also introduce a new way of defining an internal model for infinite-dimensional systems. The theoretic results are illustrated with an example where we consider robust output tracking for a one-dimensional heat equation with boundary control and pointwise measurements.

Robustness of Strong Stability of Discrete Semigroups

In this paper we study the robustness of strong stability of a discrete semigroup on a Hilbert space under bounded finite rank perturbations. As the main result we characterize classes of perturbations preserving the strong stability of the semigroup.

Polynomial Stability of Semigroups Generated by Operator Matrices

In this paper we study the stability properties of strongly continuous semigroups generated by block operator matrices. We consider triangular and full operator matrices whose diagonal operator blocks generate polynomially stable semigroups. As our main results, we present conditions under which also the semigroup generated by the operator matrix is polynomially stable. The theoretic results are applied to deriving conditions for the polynomial stability of a system consisting of a two-dimensional and a one-dimensional damped wave equations.

Robustness of strong stability of semigroups

In this paper we study the preservation of strong stability of strongly continuous semigroups on Hilbert spaces. In particular, we study a situation where the generator of the semigroup has a finite number of spectral points on the imaginary axis and the norm of its resolvent operator is polynomially bounded near these points. We characterize classes of finite rank perturbations preserving the strong stability of the semigroup. In addition, we improve recent results on preservation of polynomial stability of a semigroup under finite rank perturbations of its generator. Theoretic results are illustrated with an example where we consider the preservation of the strong stability of a multiplication semigroup.
