Optimal decay for a wave-heat system with Coleman-Gurtin thermal law

We study the long-term behaviour of solutions to a one-dimensional coupled wave-heat system with Coleman-Gurtin thermal law. Our approach is based on the asymptotic theory of $C_0$-semigroups and recent results developed for coupled control systems. As our main results, we represent the system as a feedback interconnection between the wave part and the Coleman-Gurtin part and we show that the associated semigroup in the history framework of Dafermos is polynomially stable with optimal decay rate $t^{-2}$ as $t\to\infty$. In particular, we obtain a sharp estimate for the rate of energy decay of classical solutions to the problem.

On Robust Regulation of PDEs: from Abstract Methods to PDE Controllers

In this paper we study robust output tracking and disturbance rejection of linear partial differential equation (PDE) models. We focus on demonstrating how the abstract internal model based controller design methods developed for "regular linear systems" can be utilised in controller design for concrete PDE systems. We show that when implemented for PDE systems, the abstract control design methods lead in a natural way to controllers with "PDE parts". Moreover, we formulate the controller construction in a way which utilises minimal knowledge of the abstract system representation and is instead solely based on natural properties of the original PDE. We also discuss computation and approximation of the controller parameters, and illustrate the results with an example on control design for a boundary controlled diffusion equation.

Time-Varying Internal Models and Regulation of Unknown Harmonic Signals for Regular Linear Systems

We introduce general results on well-posedness and output regulation of regular linear systems with nonautonomous controllers. We present a generalization of the internal model principle for time-dependent controllers with asymptotically converging parameters. This general result is utilised in controller design for output tracking and disturbance rejection of harmonic signals with unknown frequencies. Our controller can be flexibly combined with different frequency estimation methods. The results are illustrated in rejection of unknown harmonic disturbances for a one-dimensional boundary controlled heat equation.

Accelerating Neural ODEs Using Model Order Reduction

Embedding nonlinear dynamical systems into artificial neural networks is a powerful new formalism for machine learning. By parameterizing ordinary differential equations (ODEs) as neural network layers, these Neural ODEs are memory-efficient to train, process time-series naturally and incorporate knowledge of physical systems into deep learning models. However, the practical applications of Neural ODEs are limited due to long inference times, because the outputs of the embedded ODE layers are computed numerically with differential equation solvers that can be computationally demanding. Here we show that mathematical model order reduction methods can be used for compressing and accelerating Neural ODEs by accurately simulating the continuous nonlinear dynamics in low-dimensional subspaces. We implement our novel compression method by developing Neural ODEs that integrate the necessary subspace-projection and interpolation operations as layers of the neural network. We validate our approach by comparing it to neuron pruning and SVD-based weight truncation methods from the literature in image and time-series classification tasks. The methods are evaluated by acceleration versus accuracy when adjusting the level of compression. On this spectrum, we achieve a favourable balance over existing methods by using model order reduction when compressing a convolutional Neural ODE. In compressing a recurrent Neural ODE, SVD-based weight truncation yields good performance. Based on our results, our integration of model order reduction with Neural ODEs can facilitate efficient, dynamical system-driven deep learning in resource-constrained applications.

Subsystem-Based Control with Modularity for Strict-Feedback Form Nonlinear Systems

This study proposes an adaptive subsystem-based control (SBC) for systematic and straightforward nonlinear~control of nth-order strict-feedback form (SFF) systems.~By decomposing the SFF system to subsystems, a generic~term (namely stability connector) can be created to address dynamic interactions between the subsystems. This 1) enables modular control design with global asymptotic stability, 2) such that both the control design and the stability analysis can be performed locally at a subsystem level, 3) while avoiding an excessive growth of the control design complexity when the system order n increases. The latter property makes the method suitable especially for high-dimensional systems. We also design a smooth projection function for addressing system parametric uncertainties. Numerical simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

Decentralized Observer Design for Virtual Decomposition Control

In this paper, we incorporate velocity observer design into the virtual decomposition control (VDC) strategy of an $n$-DoF open chain robotic manipulator. Descending from the VDC strategy, the proposed design is based on decomposing the $n$-DoF manipulator into subsystems, i.e., rigid links and joints, for which the decentralized controller-observer implementation can be done locally. Similar to VDC, the combined controller-observer design is passivity-based, and we show that it achieves semiglobal exponential convergence of the tracking error. The convergence analysis is carried out using Lyapunov functions based on the observer and controller error dynamics. The proposed design is demonstrated in a simulation study of a 2-DoF open chain robotic manipulator in the vertical plane.

A Reduced Order Controller for Output Tracking of a Kelvin-Voigt Beam

We study output tracking and disturbance rejection for an Euler-Bernoulli beam with Kelvin-Voigt damping. The system has distributed control and pointwise observation. As our main result we design a finite-dimensional low-order internal model based controller that is based on a spectral Galerkin method and model reduction by Balanced Truncation. The performance of the designed controller is demonstrated with numerical simulations and compared to the performance of a low-gain internal model based controller.

A Lyapunov Approach to Robust Regulation of Distributed Port-Hamiltonian Systems

This paper studies robust output tracking and disturbance rejection for boundary controlled infinite-dimensional port--Hamiltonian systems including second order models such as the Euler--Bernoulli beam. The control design is achieved using the internal model principle and the stability analysis using a Lyapunov approach. Contrary to existing works on the same topic no assumption is made on the external well-posedness of the considered class of PDEs. The results are applied to robust tracking of a piezo actuated tube used in atomic force imaging.

Robust Output Regulation of the Linearized Boussinesq Equations with Boundary Control and Observation

We study temperature and velocity output tracking problem for a two-dimensional room model with the fluid dynamics governed by the linearized translated Boussinesq equations. Additionally, the room model includes finite-dimensional models for actuation and sensing dynamics, thus the complete model dynamics are governed by an ODE-PDE-ODE system. As the main result, we design a low-dimensional internal model based controller for robust output racking of the room model. Efficiency of the controller is demonstrated through a numerical example of velocity and temperature tracking.

Robust Output Tracking for a Room Temperature Model with Distributed Control and Observation

We consider robust output regulation of a partial differential equation model describing temperature evolution in a room. More precisely, we examine a two-dimensional room model with the velocity field and temperature evolution governed by the incompressible steady state Navier-Stokes and advection-diffusion equations, respectively, which coupled together form a simplification of the Boussinesq equations. We assume that the control and observation operators of our system are distributed, whereas the disturbance acts on a part of the boundary of the system. We solve the robust output regulation problem using a finite-dimensional low-order controller, which is constructed using model reduction on a finite element approximation of the model. Through numerical simulations, we compare performance of the reduced-order controller to that of the controller without model reduction as well as to performance of a low-gain robust controller.

Asymptotics and approximation of large systems of ordinary differential equations

In this paper we continue our earlier investigations into the asymptotic behaviour of infinite systems of coupled differential equations. Under the mild assumption that the so-called characteristic function of our system is completely monotonic we obtain a drastically simplified condition which ensures boundedness of the associates semigroup. If the characteristic function satisfies certain additional conditions we deduce sharp rates of convergence to equilibrium. We moreover address the important and delicate issue of the role of the infinite system in understanding the asymptotic behaviour of large but finite systems, and we provide a precise way of obtaining size-independent rates of convergence for families of finite-dimensional systems. Finally, we illustrate our abstract results in the setting of the well-known platoon problem.

Finite-Dimensional Controllers for Robust Regulation of Boundary Control Systems

We study the robust output regulation of linear boundary control systems by constructing extended systems. The extended systems are established based on solving static differential equations under two new conditions. We first consider the abstract setting and present finite-dimensional reduced order controllers. The controller design is then used for particular PDE models: high-dimensional parabolic equations and beam equations with Kelvin-Voigt damping. Numerical examples will be presented using Finite Element Method.

On Polynomial Stability of Coupled Partial Differential Equations in 1D

We study the well-posedness and asymptotic behaviour of selected PDE-PDE and PDE-ODE systems on one-dimensional spatial domains, namely a boundary coupled wave-heat system and a wave equation with a dynamic boundary condition. We prove well-posedness of the models and derive rational decay rates for the energy using an approach where the coupled systems are formulated as feedback interconnections of impedance passive regular linear systems.

Stability and Robust Regulation of Passive Linear Systems

We study the stability of coupled impedance passive regular linear systems under power-preserving interconnections. We present new conditions for strong, exponential, and non-uniform stability of the closed-loop system. We apply the stability results to the construction of passive error feedback controllers for robust output tracking and disturbance rejection for strongly stabilizable passive systems. In the case of nonsmooth reference and disturbance signals we present conditions for non-uniform rational and logarithmic rates of convergence of the output. The results are illustrated with examples on designing controllers for linear wave and heat equations, and on studying the stability of a system of coupled partial differential equations.

Reduced Order Controller Design for Robust Output Regulation

We study robust output regulation for parabolic partial differential equations and other infinite-dimensional linear systems with analytic semigroups. As our main results we show that robust output tracking and disturbance rejection for our class of systems can be achieved using a finite-dimensional controller and present algorithms for construction of two different internal model based robust controllers. The controller parameters are chosen based on a Galerkin approximation of the original PDE system and employ balanced truncation to reduce the orders of the controllers. In the second part of the paper we design controllers for robust output tracking and disturbance rejection for a 1D reaction-diffusion equation with boundary disturbances, a 2D diffusion-convection equation, and a 1D beam equation with Kelvin-Voigt damping.

Asymptotics for periodic systems

This paper investigates the asymptotic behaviour of solutions of periodic evolution equations. Starting with a general result concerning the quantified asymptotic behaviour of periodic evolution families we go on to consider a special class of dissipative systems arising naturally in applications. For this class of systems we analyse in detail the spectral properties of the associated monodromy operator, showing in particular that it is a so-called Ritt operator under a natural 'resonance' condition. This allows us to deduce from our general result a precise description of the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding solutions. In particular, we present conditions for rational rates of convergence to periodic solutions in the case where the convergence fails to be uniformly exponential. We illustrate our general results by applying them to concrete problems including the one-dimensional wave equation with periodic damping.

Optimal energy decay for the wave-heat system on a rectangular domain

We study the rate of energy decay for solutions of a coupled wave-heat system on a rectangular domain. Using techniques from the theory of $C_0$-semigroups, and in particular a well-known result due to Borichev and Tomilov, we prove that the energy of classical solutions decays like $t^{-2/3}$ as $t\to\infty$. This rate is moreover shown to be sharp. Our result implies in particular that a general estimate in the literature, which predicts at least logarithmic decay and is known to be best possible in general, is suboptimal in the special case under consideration here. Our strategy of proof involves direct estimates based on separation of variables and a refined version of the technique developed in our earlier paper for a one-dimensional wave-heat system.
