Rigorous study of the equilibria of collision kernels appearing in the theory of weak turbulence

In this paper, we rigorously obtain all the equilibria of collision kernels of type "two particles give two particles" appearing in weak turbulence theory under very general assumptions, thus completing the "equality case" in Boltzmann's H-theorem for those models. We also provide some rigorous results for collision kernels of type "two particles give one particle", under assumptions which include some of the most classical kernels of this type. The method of proof is inspired by the quantitative estimates obtained for the Landau equation by Desvillettes in [J. Funct. Anal. 269:1359-1403, 2015].

About the entropic structure of detailed balanced multi-species cross-diffusion equations

This paper links at the formal level the entropy structure of a multi-species cross-diffusion system of Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) type satisfying the detailed balance condition with the entropy structure of a reversible microscopic many-particle Markov process on a discretised space. The link is established by first performing a mean-field limit to a master equation over discretised space. Then the spatial discretisation limit is performed in a completely rigorous way. This by itself provides a novel strategy for proving global existence of weak solutions to a class of cross-diffusion systems.

About reaction-diffusion systems involving the Holling-type II and the Beddington-DeAngelis functional responses for predator-prey models

We consider in this paper a microscopic model (that is, a system of three reaction-diffusion equations) incorporating the dynamics of handling and searching predators, and show that its solutions converge when a small parameter tends to $0$ towards the solutions of a reaction-cross diffusion system of predator-prey type involving a Holling-type II or Beddington-DeAngelis functional response. We also provide a study of the Turing instability domain of the obtained equations and (in the case of the Beddington-DeAngelis functional response) compare it to the same instability domain when the cross diffusion is replaced by a standard diffusion.

Homogenization of the discrete diffusive coagulation-fragmentation equations in perforated domains

The asymptotic behavior of the solution of an infinite set of Smoluchowski's discrete coagulation-fragmentation-diffusion equations with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, defined in a periodically perforated domain, is analyzed. Our homogenization result, based on Nguetseng-Allaire two-scale convergence, is meant to pass from a microscopic model (where the physical processes are properly described) to a macroscopic one (which takes into account only the effective or averaged properties of the system). When the characteristic size of the perforations vanishes, the information given on the microscale by the non-homogeneous Neumann boundary condition is transferred into a global source term appearing in the limiting (homogenized) equations. Furthermore, on the macroscale, the geometric structure of the perforated domain induces a correction in the diffusion coefficients.

Trend to equilibrium for reaction-diffusion systems arising from complex balanced chemical reaction networks

The quantitative convergence to equilibrium for reaction-diffusion systems arising from complex balanced chemical reaction networks with mass action kinetics is studied by using the so-called entropy method. In the first part of the paper, by deriving explicitly the entropy dissipation, we show that for complex balanced systems without boundary equilibria, each trajectory converges exponentially fast to the unique complex balance equilibrium. Moreover, a constructive proof is proposed to explicitly estimate the rate of convergence in the special case of a cyclic reaction. In the second part of the paper, complex balanced systems with boundary equilibria are considered. We investigate two specific cases featuring two and three chemical substances respectively. In these cases, the boundary equilibria are shown to be unstable in some sense, so that exponential convergence to the unique strictly positive equilibrium can also be proven.

A Derivation of the Vlasov-Stokes System for Aerosol Flows from the Kinetic Theory of Binary Gas Mixtures

In this short paper, we formally derive the thin spray equation for a steady Stokes gas, i.e. the equation consists in a coupling between a kinetic (Vlasov type) equation for the dispersed phase and a (steady) Stokes equation for the gas. Our starting point is a system of Boltzmann equations for a binary gas mixture. The derivation follows the procedure already outlined in [Bernard-Desvillettes-Golse-Ricci, arXiv:1608.00422 [math.AP]] where the evolution of the gas is governed by the Navier-Stokes equation.

A Derivation of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes Model for Aerosol Flows from Kinetic Theory

This article proposes a derivation of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system for spray/aerosol flows. The distribution function of the dispersed phase is governed by a Vlasov-equation, while the velocity field of the propellant satisfies the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluids. The dynamics of the dispersed phase and of the propellant are coupled through the drag force exerted by the propellant on the dispersed phase. We present a formal derivation of this model from a multiphase Boltzmann system for a binary gaseous mixture, involving the droplets/dust particles in the dispersed phase as one species, and the gas molecules as the other species. Under suitable assumptions on the collision kernels, we prove that the sequences of solutions to the multiphase Boltzmann system converge to distributional solutions to the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes equation in some appropriate distinguished scaling limit. Specifically, we assume (a) that the mass ratio of the gas molecules to the dust particles/droplets is small, (b) that the thermal speed of the dust particles/droplets is much smaller than that of the gas molecules and (c) that the mass density of the gas and of the dispersed phase are of the same order of magnitude.

Smoothness of moments of the solutions of discrete coagulation equations with diffusion

In this paper, we establish smoothness of moments of the solutions of discrete coagulation-diffusion systems. As key assumptions, we suppose that the coagulation coefficients grow at most sub-linearly and that the diffusion coefficients converge towards a strictly positive limit (those conditions also imply the existence of global weak solutions and the absence of gelation).

Asymptotic profile in selection-mutation equations: Gauss versus Cauchy distributions

In this paper, we study the asymptotic (large time) behavior of a selection-mutation-competition model for a population structured with respect to a phenotypic trait, when the rate of mutation is very small. We assume that the reproduction is asexual, and that the mutations can be described by a linear integral operator. We are interested in the interplay between the time variable $t$ and the rate $\varepsilon$ of mutations. We show that depending on $α> 0$, the limit $\varepsilon \to 0$ with $t = \varepsilon^{-α}$ can lead to population number densities which are either Gaussian-like (when $α$ is small) or Cauchy-like (when $α$ is large).

Estimates for the large time behavior of the Landau equation in the Coulomb case

This work deals with the large time behaviour of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential. Firstly, we obtain a bound from below of the entropy dissipation $D(f)$ by a weighted relative Fisher information of $f$ with respect to the associated Maxwellian distribution, which leads to a variant of Cercignani's conjecture thanks to a logarithmic Sobolev inequality. Secondly, we prove the propagation of polynomial and stretched exponential moments with an at most linearly growing in time rate. As an application of these estimates, we show the convergence of any ($H$- or weak) solution to the Landau equation with Coulomb potential to the associated Maxwellian equilibrium with an explicitly computable rate, assuming initial data with finite mass, energy, entropy and some higher $L^1$-moment. More precisely, if the initial data have some (large enough) polynomial $L^1$-moment, then we obtain an algebraic decay. If the initial data have a stretched exponential $L^1$-moment, then we recover a stretched exponential decay.

Rigorous numerics for nonlinear operators with tridiagonal dominant linear part

We present a method designed for computing solutions of infinite dimensional non linear operators $f(x) = 0$ with a tridiagonal dominant linear part. We recast the operator equation into an equivalent Newton-like equation $x = T(x) = x - Af(x)$, where $A$ is an approximate inverse of the derivative $Df(\overline x)$ at an approximate solution $\overline x$. We present rigorous computer-assisted calculations showing that $T$ is a contraction near $\overline x$, thus yielding the existence of a solution. Since $Df(\overline x)$ does not have an asymptotically diagonal dominant structure, the computation of $A$ is not straightforward. This paper provides ideas for computing $A$, and proposes a new rigorous method for proving existence of solutions of nonlinear operators with tridiagonal dominant linear part.

Entropy dissipation estimates for the Landau equation in the Coulomb case and applications

We present in this paper an estimate which bounds from below the entropy dissipation D(f) of the Landau operator with Coulomb interaction by a weighted H^1 norm of the square root of f. As a consequence, we get a weighted L^1_t(L^3_v) estimate for the solutions of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb interaction, and the propagation of L^1 moments of any order for this equation. We also present an application of our estimate to the Landau equation with (moderately) soft potentials, providing thus a new proof of some recent results of Kung-Chien Wu

On the entropic structure of reaction-cross diffusion systems

This paper is devoted to the study of systems of reaction-cross diffusion equations arising in population dynamics. New results of existence of weak solutions are presented, allowing to treat systems of two equations in which one of the cross diffusions is convex, while the other one is concave. The treatment of such cases involves a general study of the structure of Lyapunov functionals for cross diffusion systems, and the introduction of a new scheme of approximation, which provides simplified proofs of existence.

New results for triangular reaction cross diffusion system

We present an approach based on entropy and duality methods for triangular reaction cross diffusion systems of two equations, in which cross diffusion terms appear only in one of the equations. Thanks to this approach, we recover and extend many existing results on the classical triangular Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model.

Derivation of a homogenized two-temperature model from the heat equation

This work studies the heat equation in a two-phase material with spherical inclusions. Under some appropriate scaling on the size, volume fraction and heat capacity of the inclusions, we derive a coupled system of partial differential equations governing the evolution of the temperature of each phase at a macroscopic level of description. The coupling terms describing the exchange of heat between the phases are obtained by using homogenization techniques originating from [D. Cioranescu, F. Murat: Collège de France Seminar vol. 2. (Paris 1979-1980) Res. Notes in Math. vol. 60, pp. 98-138. Pitman, Boston, London, 1982.]

Improved duality estimates and applications to reaction-diffusion equations

We present a refined duality estimate for parabolic equations. This estimate entails new results for systems of reaction-diffusion equations, including smoothness and exponential convergence towards equilibrium for equations with quadratic right-hand sides in two dimensions. For general systems in any space dimension, we obtain smooth solutions of reaction-diffusion systems coming out of reversible chemistry under an assumption that the diffusion coefficients are sufficiently close one to another.

Existence theory for a kinetic-fluid coupling when small droplets are treated as part of the fluid

We consider in this paper a spray constituted of an incompressible viscous gas and of small droplets which can breakup. This spray is modeled by the coupling (through a drag force term) of the incom- pressible Navier-Stokes equation and of the Vlasov-Boltzmann equation, together with a fragmentation kernel. We first show at the formal level that if the droplets are very small after the breakup, then the solutions of this system converge towards the solution of a simplified system in which the small droplets produced by the breakup are treated as part of the fluid. Then, existence of global weak solutions for this last system is shown to hold, thanks to the use of the DiPerna-Lions theory for singular transport equations.
