On the derived category of the Cayley plane

We describe a maximal exceptional collection on the Cayley plane, the minimal homogeneous projective variety of $E_6$. This collection consists in a sequence of 27 irreducible homogeneous bundles.

Quasi-complete homogeneous contact manifold associated to a cubic form

Starting from a cubic form, we give a general construction of a quasi-complete homogeneous manifold endowed with a natural contact structure. We show that it can be compactified into a projective contact manifold if and only if the cubic form is the determinant of a simple cubic Jordan algebra.

A note on certain Kronecker coefficients

We prove an explicit formula for the tensor product with itself of an irreducible complex representation of the symmetric group defined by a rectangle of height two. We also describe part of the decomposition for the tensor product of representations defined by rectangles of heights two and four. Our results are deduced, through Schur-Weyl duality, from the observation that certain actions on triple tensor products of vector spaces, are multiplicity free.

Affine symmetries of the equivariant quantum cohomology ring of rational homogeneous spaces

Let $X$ be a rational homogeneous space and let $QH^*(X)_{loc}^\times$ be the group of invertible elements in the small quantum cohomology ring of $X$ localised in the quantum parameters. We generalise results of arXiv:math/0609796 and realise explicitly the map $π_1({\rm Aut}(X))\to QH^*(X)_{loc}^\times$ described in arXiv:dg-ga/9511011. We even prove that this map is an embedding and realise it in the equivariant quantum cohomology ring $QH^*_T(X)_{loc}^\times$. We give explicit formulas for the product by these elements. The proof relies on a generalisation, to a quotient of the equivariant homology ring of the affine Grassmannian, of a formula proved by Peter Magyar arXiv:0705.3826. It also uses Peterson's unpublished result -- recently proved by Lam and Shimozono in arXiv:0705.1386 -- on the comparison between the equivariant homology ring of the affine Grassmannian and the equivariant quantum cohomology ring.

Quantum cohomology of minuscule homogeneous spaces III : semi-simplicity and consequences

We prove that the quantum cohomology ring of any minuscule or cominuscule homogeneous space, specialized at q=1, is semisimple. This implies that complex conjugation defines an algebra automorphism of the quantum cohomology ring localized at the quantum parameter. We check that this involution coincides with the strange duality defined in a previous paper. We deduce Vafa-Intriligator type formulas for the Gromov-Witten invariants.

Quantum cohomology of minuscule homogeneous spaces

We study the quantum cohomology of (co)minuscule homogeneous varieties under a unified perspective. We show that three points Gromov-Witten invariants can always be interpreted as classical intersection numbers on auxiliary varieties. Our main combinatorial tools are certain quivers, in terms of which we obtain a quantum Chevalley formula and a higher quantum Poincaré duality. In particular we compute the quantum cohomology of the two exceptional minuscule homogeneous varieties.

Quantum cohomology of minuscule homogeneous spaces II : Hidden symmetries

We prove that the quantum cohomology ring of any minuscule or cominuscule homogeneous space, once localized at the quantum parameter, has a non trivial involution mapping Schubert classes to multiples of Schubert classes. This can be stated as a strange duality property for the Gromov-Witten invariants, which turn out to be very symmetric.

Prime Fano threefolds and integrable systems

For a general K3 surface of genus g = 2,3,...,10, we prove that the intermediate jacobians of the family of prime Fano threefolds of genus g containing S as a hyperplane section, form generically an algebraic completely integrable system.

Cubic hypersurfaces and integrable systems

We show that the family of 21-dimensional intermediate jacobians of cubic fivefolds containing a given cubic fourfold X is generically an algebraic integrable system. In the proof we apply an integrability criterion, introduced and used by Donagi and Markman to find a similar integrable system over the family of cubic threefolds in X. To enter in the conditions of this criterion, we write down explicitly the known by Beauville and Donagi symplectic structure on the family F(X) of lines on the general cubic fourfold X, and prove that the family of planes on a cubic fivefold containing X is embedded as a Lagrangian surface in F(X). By a symplectic reduction we deduce that our integrable system induces on the nodal boundary another integrable system, interpreted generically as the family of 20-dimensional intermediate jacobians of Fano threefolds of genus four contained in X. Along the way we prove an Abel-Jacobi type isomorphism for the Fano surface of conics in the general Fano threefold of genus 4, and compute the numerical invariants of this surface.

Pfaffian Lines and Vector Bundles on Fano Threefolds of Genus 8

Let X be a general complex Fano threefold of genus 8. We prove that the moduli space of rank two semistable sheaves on X with Chern numbers c_1=1, c_2=6 and c_3=0 is isomorphic to the Fano surface F(X) of conics on X. Inside F(X), the non-locally free sheaves are parameterized by a smooth curve of genus 26 isomorphic to the base of the family of lines on X.

Configurations of lines and models of Lie algebras

The automorphism groups of the 27 lines on the smooth cubic surface or the 28 bitangents to the general quartic plane curve are well-known to be closely related to the Weyl groups of $E\_6$ and $E\_7$. We show how classical subconfigurations of lines, such as double-sixes, triple systems or Steiner sets, are easily constructed from certain models of the exceptional Lie algebras. For ${\mathfrak e}\_7$ and ${\mathfrak e}\_8$ we are lead to beautiful models graded over the octonions, which display these algebras as plane projective geometries of subalgebras. We also interpret the group of the bitangents as a group of transformations of the triangles in the Fano plane, and show how this allows to realize the isomorphism $PSL(3,F\_2)\simeq PSL(2,F\_7)$ in terms of harmonic cubes.

Varieties of reductions for $gl\_n$

We study the varieties of reductions associated to the variety of rank one matrices in $\fgl\_n$. These varieties are defined as natural compactifications of the different ways to write the identity matrix as a sum of $n$ rank one matrices. Equivalently, they compactify the quotient of $PGL\_n$ by the normalizer of a maximal torus. In particular, we prove that for $n=4$ we get a 12-dimensional Fano variety with Picard number one, index 3, and canonical singularities.

On the ideals of secant varieties of Segre varieties

We establish basic techniques for studying the ideals of secant varieties of Segre varieties. We solve a conjecture of Garcia, Stillman and Sturmfels on the generators of the ideal of the first secant variety in the case of three factors and solve the conjecture set-theoretically for an arbitrary number of factors. We determine the low degree components of the ideals of secant varieties of small dimension in a few cases.

Severi varieties and their varieties of reductions

We study the varieties of reductions associated to the four Severi varieties, the first example of which is the Fano threefold of index 2 and degree 5 studied by Mukai and others. We prove that they are smooth but very special linear sections of Grassmann varieties, and rational Fano manifolds of dimension $3a$ and index $a+1$, for $a=1, 2, 4, 8$. We study their maximal linear spaces and prove that through the general point pass exactly three of them, a result we relate to Cartan's triality principle. We also prove that they are compactifications of affine spaces.

The Chow ring of the Cayley plane

We give a full description of the Chow ring of the complex Cayley plane, the simplest of the exceptional flag varieties. We describe explicitely the most interesting of its Schubert varieties and compute their intersection products. Translating our results in the Borel presentation, i.e. in terms of Weyl group invariants, we are able to compute the degree of the variety of reductions $Y_8$ introduced in our related preprint math.AG/0306328.

On the projective geometry of homogeneous spaces

We study the projective geometry of homogeneous varieties $X= G/P\subset P(V)$, where $G$ is a complex simple Lie group, $P$ is a maximal parabolic subgroup and $V$ is the minimal $G$-module associated to $P$. Our study began with the observation that Freudenthal's magic chart could be derived from Zak's theorem on Severi varieties and standard geometric constructions. Our attempt to understand this observation led us to discover further connections between projective geometry and representation theory. Among other things, we calculate the variety of tangent directions to lines on $X$ through a point and determine unirulings of $X$. We show this variety is a Hermitian symmetric space if and only if $P$ does not correspond to a short root. We describe the spaces corresponding to the exceptional short roots and their unirulings using the octonions. Further calculations, in the case $X$ is a Hermitian symmetric space, give rise to a strict prolongation property and the appearance of secant varieties at the infinitesimal level. Our work complements and advances that of Freudenthal and Tits, who studied homogeneous varieties in an abstract/axiomatic setting.
