Classification of complex simple Lie algebras via projective geometry geometry

We present a new proof of the classification of complex simple Lie algebras via the projective geometry of homogeneous varieties. Our proof proceeds by constructing homogeneous varieties using the ideals of the secant and tangential varieties of homogeneous varieties already constructed. Our algorithms make no reference to root systems. Our proofs use properties of root systems, but not their classification.

Hooks and powers of parts in partitions

This paper shows that the number of hooks of length k contained in all partitions of n equals k times the number of parts of length k in all partitions of n. It contains also formulas for the moments (under uniform distribution) of k-th parts in partitions of n.

Generic singularities of Schubert varieties

We describe the generic singularity of a Schubert variety of type A on each irreducible component of its singular locus. This singularity is given either by a cone of rank one matrices, or a quadratic cone.

Le lieu singulier des varietes de Schubert

We give an explicit combinatorial description of the irreducible components of the singular locus of a Schubert variety in a flag variety of type A. This implies a conjecture of Lakshmibai and Sandhya.

On branched coverings of some homogeneous spaces

We study nonsingular branched coverings of a homogeneous space X. There is a vector bundle associated with such a covering which was conjectured by O. Debarre to be ample when the Picard number of X is one. We prove this conjecture, which implies Barth-Lefschetz type theorems, for lagrangian grassmannians, and for quadrics up to dimension six. We propose a conjectural extension to homogeneous spaces of Picard number larger than one and prove a weaker version.

Vanishing theorems for ample vector bundles

We prove a general vanishing theorem for the cohomology of products of symmetric and skew-symmetric powers of an ample vector bundle on a smooth complex projective variety. Special cases include an extension of classical theorems of Griffiths and Le Potier to the whole Dolbeault cohomology, and an answer to a problem raised by Demailly. An application to degeneracy loci is given.
