Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions

This volume is a collection of contributions for the 7-week program "Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions" that was held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle, WA, USA, from October 1 until November 16, 2018. The program was dedicated to the physics of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), the world's first polarized electron-nucleon (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the USA. These proceedings are organized by chapters, corresponding to the weeks of the program: Week I, Generalized parton distributions; Week II, Transverse spin and TMDs; Week III, Longitudinal spin; Week IV, Symposium week; Weeks V & VI, eA collisions; Week VII, pA and AA collisions. We hope these proceedings will be useful to readers as a compilation of EIC-related science at the end of the second decade of the XXI century.

Probing the Sivers function with an unpolarized target: GTMD distributions and the Odderons

It is commonly believed that the Sivers function has uniquely to do with processes involving a transversely polarized nucleon. In this paper we show that it is not necessarily the case. We demonstrate that exclusive pion production in $un$polarized electron-proton scattering in the forward region is a direct probe of the gluon Sivers function due to its connection to the QCD Odderon.

Nucleon-to-meson transition distribution amplitudes in impact parameter space

Recent analyses of backward meson electroproduction support the validity of a collinear QCD factorization framework for these hard exclusive reactions. This opens a way to the extraction of nucleon-to-meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) from the experimental data. Similarly to the generalized parton distributions, TDAs - after the Fourier transform in the transverse plane - carry valuable information on the transverse location of hadron constituents. We address the properties of integrated nucleon-to-meson TDAs in the impact parameter representation. We argue that the emerging picture provides an intuitive interpretation for the hadron structural information contained in nucleon-to-meson TDAs and allows to study diquark-quark contents of fast moving hadrons in the transverse plane.

PHOTON-2017 conference proceedings

This document collects the proceedings of the PHOTON 2017 conference ("International Conference on the Structure and the Interactions of the Photon", including the 22th "International Workshop on Photon-Photon Collisions", and the "International Workshop on High Energy Photon Colliders") held at CERN (Geneva) in May 2017. The latest experimental and theoretical developments on the topics of the PHOTON conference series are covered: (i) $γ\,γ$ processes in e$^+$e$^-$, proton-proton (pp) and nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at current and future colliders, (ii) $γ$-hadron interactions in e$^\pm$p, pp, and AA collisions, (iii) final-state photon production (including Standard Model studies and searches beyond it) in pp and AA collisions, and (iv) high-energy $γ$-ray astrophysics. These proceedings are dedicated to the memory of Maria Krawczyk.

The spin dependent odderon in the diquark model

In this short note, we report a di-quark model calculation for the spin dependent odderon and demonstrate that the asymmetrical color source distribution in the transverse plane of a transversely polarized hadron plays an essential role in yielding the spin dependent odderon. This calculation confirms the earlier finding that the spin dependent odderon is closely related to the parton orbital angular momentum.

Sudakov Resummations in Mueller-Navelet Dijet Production

In high energy hadron-hadron collisions, dijet production with large rapidity separation proposed by Mueller and Navelet, is one of the most interesting processes which can help us to directly access the well-known Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov evolution dynamics. The objective of this work is to study the Sudakov resummation of Mueller-Navelet jets. Through the one-loop calculation, Sudakov type logarithms are obtained for this process when the produced dijets are almost back-to-back. These results could play an important role in the phenomenological study of dijet correlations with large rapidity separation at the LHC.

QCD collinear factorization, its extensions and the partonic distributions

I review the basics of the collinear factorization theorem applied primarily to deep inelastic scattering (DIS) involving forward parton distributions (PDFs) and the extensions of this theorem for exclusive processes probing non-forward parton distributions (GPDs), the generalized distribution amplitudes (GDAs) and the transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs). These QCD factorization theorem is an important tool in the description of hard processes in QCD. Whenever valid, it permits to represent the cross section or the scattering amplitude for such a process as a convolution in partonic momenta of a perturbatively calculable part (the coefficient function, CF) which involves the hard scale of the process with non-perturbative (soft) distributions of active partons inside the hadrons involved in a process. The reliability of the perturbatively determined hard part together with high precision experimental data on relevant observables gives a hope for the possibility to uncover fine details of interpartonic interactions and spatial distributions of partons inside hadrons. I conclude with some remarks about QCD factorization with transverse momentum dependent PDFs

Timelike Compton Scattering - New Theoretical Results and Experimental Possibilities

We review recent progress in the study of timelike Compton scattering (TCS), the crossed process of deeply virtual Compton scattering. We emphasize the need to include NLO corrections to any phenomenological program to extract Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) from near future experimental data. We point out that TCS at high energy should be available through a study of ultraperipheral collisions at RHIC and LHC, opening a window on quark and gluon GPDs at very small skewness.

πN transition distribution amplitudes: Their symmetries and constraints from chiral dynamics

Baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) extend the concept of generalized parton distributions. Baryon to meson TDAs appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description of amplitudes for a class of hard exclusive reactions, prominent examples of which being hard exclusive meson electroproduction off a nucleon in the backward region and baryon-antibaryon annihilation into a meson and a lepton pair. We study the general properties of these objects following from the underlying symmetries of QCD. In particular, the Lorentz symmetry results in the polynomiality property of the Mellin moments in longitudinal momentum fractions. We present a detailed account of the isotopic and permutation symmetry properties of nucleon to pion (πN) TDAs. This restricts the number of independent leading twist πN TDAs to eight functions, providing description of all isotopic channels. Using chiral symmetry and the crossing relation between πN TDAs and πN generalized distribution amplitudes we establish soft pion theorems for πN TDAs, which determine the magnitude of πN TDAs. Finally, we build a simple resonance exchange model for πN TDAs considering N and Δ(1232) exchange contributions into the isospin-1/2 and isospin-3/2 πN TDAs.

Baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes and their spectral representation

We consider the problem of construction of a spectral representation for nucleon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs), non-diagonal matrix elements of nonlocal three quark light-cone operators between a nucleon and a meson states. We introduce the notion of quadruple distributions and generalize Radyshkin's factorized Ansatz for this issue. Modelling of baryon to meson TDAs in the complete domain of their definition opens the way to quantitative estimates of cross-sections for various hard exclusive reactions.

A spectral representation for baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes

We construct a spectral representation for the baron to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs), i.e. matrix elements involving three quark correlators which arise in the description of baryon to meson transitions within the factorization approach to hard exclusive reactions. We generalize for these quantities the notion of double distributions introduced in the context of generalized parton distributions. We propose the generalization of A.Radyushkin's factorized Ansatz for the case of baryon to meson TDAs. Our construction opens the way to modeling of baryon to meson TDAs in their complete domain of definition and quantitative estimates of cross-sections for various hard exclusive reactions.

The transverse spin structure of the pion at short distances

We study the form factors of the quark tensor currents in the pion at large squared momentum transfer Q^2. It turns out that certain form factors can be evaluated using collinear factorization, whereas others receive important contributions from the end-point regions of the longitudinal quark momenta in the pion. We derive simple analytic expressions for the dominant terms at high Q^2 and illustrate them numerically.

Looking for the Odderon in photon collisions

We discuss the production of two pion pairs in photon collisions at high energies. We calculate the according matrix elements in k_T-factorization and discuss the possibility to reveal the existence of the perturbative Odderon by charge asymmetries.

Perturbative Odderon in the Dipole Model

We show that, in the framework of Mueller's dipole model, the perturbative QCD odderon is described by the dipole model equivalent of the BFKL equation with a $C$-odd initial condition. The eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the odderon solution are the same as for the dipole BFKL equation and are given by the functions $E^{n,ν}$ and $χ(n,ν)$ correspondingly, where the $C$-odd initial condition allows only for odd values of $n$. The leading high-energy odderon intercept is given by $α_{odd} - 1 = \frac{2 \as N_c}π χ(n=1 ,ν=0) = 0$ in agreement with the solution found by Bartels, Lipatov and Vacca. We proceed by writing down an evolution equation for the odderon including the effects of parton saturation. We argue that saturation makes the odderon solution a decreasing function of energy.
