Separably injective $C_σ$-spaces

We show that a (complex) $C_σ$-space is separably injective if and only if it is linearly isometric to the Banach space $C_0(Ω)$ of complex continuous functions vanishing at infinity on a substonean locally compact Hausdorff space $Ω$.

On a Question of Bouras concerning weak compactness of almost Dunford-Pettis sets

We give a positive answer to the question of K. Bouras [`Almost Dunford-Pettis sets in Banach lattices', \textit{Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo (2)} \textbf{ 62} (2013), 227--236] concerning weak compactness of almost Dunford-Pettis sets in Banach lattices. That is, every almost Dunford-Pettis set in a Banach lattice $E$ is relatively weakly compact if, and only if, $E$ is a $KB$-space.

Multiview Cauchy Estimator Feature Embedding for Depth and Inertial Sensor-Based Human Action Recognition

The ever-growing popularity of Kinect and inertial sensors has prompted intensive research efforts on human action recognition. Since human actions can be characterized by multiple feature representations extracted from Kinect and inertial sensors, multiview features must be encoded into a unified space optimal for human action recognition. In this paper, we propose a new unsupervised feature fusion method termed Multiview Cauchy Estimator Feature Embedding (MCEFE) for human action recognition. By minimizing empirical risk, MCEFE integrates the encoded complementary information in multiple views to find the unified data representation and the projection matrices. To enhance robustness to outliers, the Cauchy estimator is imposed on the reconstruction error. Furthermore, ensemble manifold regularization is enforced on the projection matrices to encode the correlations between different views and avoid overfitting. Experiments are conducted on the new Chinese Academy of Sciences - Yunnan University - Multimodal Human Action Database (CAS-YNU-MHAD) to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of MCEFE for human action recognition.

Efficient Image Reconstruction and Practical Decomposition for Dual-energy Computed Tomography

Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has shown great potential and promising applications in advanced imaging fields for its capabilities of material decomposition. However, image reconstructions and decompositions under sparse views dataset suffers severely from multi factors, such as insufficiencies of data, appearances of noise, and inconsistencies of observations. Under sparse views, conventional filtered back-projection type reconstruction methods fails to provide CT images with satisfying quality. Moreover, direct image decomposition is unstable and meet with noise boost even with full views dataset. This paper proposes an iterative image reconstruction algorithm and a practical image domain decomposition method for DECT. On one hand, the reconstruction algorithm is formulated as an optimization problem, which containing total variation regularization term and data fidelity term. The alternating direction method is utilized to design the corresponding algorithm which shows faster convergence speed compared with the existing ones. On the other hand, the image domain decomposition applies the penalized least square (PLS) estimation on decomposing the material mappings. The PLS includes linear combination term and the regularization term which enforces the smoothness on estimation images. The authors implement and evaluate the proposed joint method on real DECT projections and compare the method with typical and state-of-the-art reconstruction and decomposition methods. The experiments on dataset of an anthropomorphic head phantom show that our methods have advantages on noise suppression and edge reservation, without blurring the fine structures in the sinus area in the phantom. Compared to the existing approaches, our method achieves a superior performance on DECT imaging with respect to reconstruction accuracy and decomposition quality.

Image Prediction for Limited-angle Tomography via Deep Learning with Convolutional Neural Network

Limited angle problem is a challenging issue in x-ray computed tomography (CT) field. Iterative reconstruction methods that utilize the additional prior can suppress artifacts and improve image quality, but unfortunately require increased computation time. An interesting way is to restrain the artifacts in the images reconstructed from the practical filtered back projection (FBP) method. Frikel and Quinto have proved that the streak artifacts in FBP results could be characterized. It indicates that the artifacts created by FBP method have specific and similar characteristics in a stationary limited-angle scanning configuration. Based on this understanding, this work aims at developing a method to extract and suppress specific artifacts of FBP reconstructions for limited-angle tomography. A data-driven learning-based method is proposed based on a deep convolutional neural network. An end-to-end mapping between the FBP and artifact-free images is learned and the implicit features involving artifacts will be extracted and suppressed via nonlinear mapping. The qualitative and quantitative evaluations of experimental results indicate that the proposed method show a stable and prospective performance on artifacts reduction and detail recovery for limited angle tomography. The presented strategy provides a simple and efficient approach for improving image quality of the reconstruction results from limited projection data.

Unconditionally $p$-converging operators and Dunford-Pettis Property of order $p$

In the present paper we study unconditionally $p$-converging operators and Dunford-Pettis property of order $p$. New characterizations of unconditionally $p$-converging operators and Dunford-Pettis property of order $p$ are established. Six quantities are defined to measure how far an operator is from being unconditionally $p$-converging. We prove quantitative versions of relationships of completely continuous operators, unconditionally $p$-converging operators and unconditionally converging operators. We further investigate possible quantifications of the Dunford-Pettis property of order $p$.

Pełczyński's property ($V^{*}$) of order $p$ and its quantification

We introduce the concepts of Pełczyński's property ($V$) of order $p$ and Pełczyński's property ($V^{*}$) of order $p$. It is proved that, for each $1<p<\infty$, the James $p$-space $J_{p}$ enjoys Pełczyński's property ($V^{*}$) of order $p$ and the James $p^{*}$-space $J_{p^{*}}$ (where $p^{*}$ denotes the conjugate number of $p$) enjoys Pełczyński's property ($V$) of order $p$. We prove that both $L_{1}(μ)$ ($μ$ a finite positive measure) and $l_{1}$ enjoy the quantitative version of Pełczyński's property ($V^{*}$).

CFO: Conditional Focused Neural Question Answering with Large-scale Knowledge Bases

How can we enable computers to automatically answer questions like "Who created the character Harry Potter"? Carefully built knowledge bases provide rich sources of facts. However, it remains a challenge to answer factoid questions raised in natural language due to numerous expressions of one question. In particular, we focus on the most common questions --- ones that can be answered with a single fact in the knowledge base. We propose CFO, a Conditional Focused neural-network-based approach to answering factoid questions with knowledge bases. Our approach first zooms in a question to find more probable candidate subject mentions, and infers the final answers with a unified conditional probabilistic framework. Powered by deep recurrent neural networks and neural embeddings, our proposed CFO achieves an accuracy of 75.7% on a dataset of 108k questions - the largest public one to date. It outperforms the current state of the art by an absolute margin of 11.8%.

Swift: Compiled Inference for Probabilistic Programming Languages

A probabilistic program defines a probability measure over its semantic structures. One common goal of probabilistic programming languages (PPLs) is to compute posterior probabilities for arbitrary models and queries, given observed evidence, using a generic inference engine. Most PPL inference engines---even the compiled ones---incur significant runtime interpretation overhead, especially for contingent and open-universe models. This paper describes Swift, a compiler for the BLOG PPL. Swift-generated code incorporates optimizations that eliminate interpretation overhead, maintain dynamic dependencies efficiently, and handle memory management for possible worlds of varying sizes. Experiments comparing Swift with other PPL engines on a variety of inference problems demonstrate speedups ranging from 12x to 326x.

First-principle study on compensated half metallic double perovskite compound $Ba_2PrVO_6$

The first-principle study on double perovskite compound Ba$_2$PrVO$_6$ has been presented in this paper. By analysing band structures and integrated density of states, it is found that Ba$_2$PrVO$_6$ is ferromagnetic metallic within LSDA and compensated half metallic whithin LSDA+U. According to the total and partial density of states, the anti-ferromagnetism of Ba$_2$PrVO$_6$ is originated from the spin down state Pr$^{4+}$ ($4f_{-2}$) and the spin up hybridized state between the partially filled $t_{2g}$ state of V and the partially filled triple-degeneration state $4f_{-1}$, $4f_{+1}$, $4f_{+3}$ of Pr. We have investigated the magnetic evaluation of Ba$_2$PrVO$_6$ through fixed spin moment calculations, and the results indicate that the compensated half-metallic state is the ground state. The thermodynamic properties of Ba$_2$PrVO$_6$ are also studied by employing the quasi-harmonic Debye model.

Group velocity locked vector dissipative solitons in a high repetition rate fiber laser

Vectorial nature of dissipative solitons (DSs) with high repetition rates is studied for the first time in a normal-dispersion fiber laser. Despite the fact that the formed DSs are strongly chirped and the repetition rate is greater than 100 MHz, polarization locked and polarization rotating group velocity locked vector DSs can be formed under 129.3 MHz fundamental mode-locking and 258.6 MHz harmonic mode-locking of the fiber laser, respectively. The two orthogonally polarized components of these vector DSs possess distinctly different central wavelengths and travel together at the same group velocity in the laser cavity, resulting in a gradual spectral edge and small steps on the optical spectra, which can be considered as an auxiliary indicator of the group velocity locked vector DSs.

A locally gradient-preserving reinitialization for level set functions

The level set method commonly requires a reinitialization of the level set function due to interface motion and deformation. We extend the traditional technique for reinitializing the level set function to a method that preserves the interface gradient. The gradient of the level set function represents the stretching of the interface, which is of critical importance in many physical applications. The proposed locally gradient-preserving reinitialization (LGPR) method involves the solution of three PDEs of Hamilton-Jacobi type in succession; first the signed distance function is found using a traditional reinitialization technique, then the interface gradient is extended into the domain by a transport equation, and finally the new level set function is achieved with the solution of a generalized reinitialization equation. We prove the well-posedness of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations, with possibly discontinuous Hamiltonians, and propose numerical schemes for their solutions. A subcell resolution technique is used in the numerical solution of the transport equation to extend data away from the interface directly with high accuracy. The reinitialization technique is computationally inexpensive if the PDEs are solved only in a small band surrounding the interface. As an important application, the LGPR method will enable the application of the local level set approach to the Eulerian Immersed boundary method.

Dynamics of dissipative solitons in a high repetition rate normal-dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser

The dynamics of dissipative solitons (DSs) are explored in a high repetition rate normal-dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser for the first time. Despite of the high fundamental repetition rate of 129 MHz and thus the low pulse energy, a DS train with a dechirped pulse width of 418 fs, period-doubling of single and dual DSs, as well as 258 MHz 2nd-order harmonic mode-locking of DSs can be observed in the fiber laser with increasing pump power and appropriate settings. A transmitted semiconductor saturable absorber and a wavelength division multiplexer/isolator/tap hybrid module are employed to simplify the laser configuration, thus not only increasing the repetition rate, but also enhancing the stability and robustness of the fiber laser due to the commercial availability of all the components.

Scalar - vector soliton fiber lasers

Rapid progress in passively mode-locked fiber lasers is currently driven by the recent discovery of vector feature of mode-locking pulses, namely, the group velocity-locked vector solitons, the phase locked vector solitons, and the high-order vector solitons. Those vector solitons are fundamentally different from the previously known scalar solitons. Here, we report a fiber laser where the mode-locked pulse evolves as a vector soliton in the strong birefringent segment and is transformed into a regular scalar soliton after the polarizer within the laser cavity. The existence of solutions in a polarization-dependent cavity comprising a periodic combination of two distinct nonlinear waves is novel and likely to be applicable to various other nonlinear systems. For very large local birefringence, our laser approaches the working regime of vector soliton lasers, while it approaches scalar soliton fiber lasers under the conditions of very small birefringence.

Geometric implications of the M(r,s)-properties and the uniform Kadec-Klee property in JB*-triples

We explore new implications of the $M(r,s)$ and $M^*(r,s)$ properties for Banach spaces. We show that a Banach space $X$ satisfying property $M(1,s)$ for some $0<s\leq 1$, admitting a point $x_{0}$ in its unit sphere at which the relative weak and norm topologies agree, satisfies the generalized Gossez-Lami Dozo property. We establish sufficient conditions, in terms of the $(r, s)$-Lipschitz weak$^*$ Kadec-Klee property on a Banach space $X$, to guarantee that its dual space satisfies the UKK$^*$ property. We determine appropriate conditions to assure that a Banach space $X$ satisfies the $(r, s)$-Lipschitz weak$^*$ Kadec-Klee property. These results are applied to prove that every spin factor satisfies the UKK property, and consequently, the KKP and the UKK properties are equivalent for real and complex JB$^*$-triples.

Towards Practical Bayesian Parameter and State Estimation

Joint state and parameter estimation is a core problem for dynamic Bayesian networks. Although modern probabilistic inference toolkits make it relatively easy to specify large and practically relevant probabilistic models, the silver bullet---an efficient and general online inference algorithm for such problems---remains elusive, forcing users to write special-purpose code for each application. We propose a novel blackbox algorithm -- a hybrid of particle filtering for state variables and assumed density filtering for parameter variables. It has following advantages: (a) it is efficient due to its online nature, and (b) it is applicable to both discrete and continuous parameter spaces . On a variety of toy and real models, our system is able to generate more accurate results within a fixed computation budget. This preliminary evidence indicates that the proposed approach is likely to be of practical use.
