Quantitative Study on Exact Reconstruction Sampling Condition in Limited-view CT

In limited-view computed tomography reconstruction, iterative image reconstruction with sparsity-exploiting methods, such as total variation (TV) minimization, inspired by compressive sensing, potentially claims large reductions in sampling requirements. However, a quantitative notion of this claim is non-trivial because of the ill-defined reduction in sampling achieved by the sparsity-exploiting method. In this paper, exact reconstruction sampling condition for limited-view problem is studied by verifying the uniqueness of solution in TV minimization model. Uniqueness is tested by solving a convex optimization problem derived from the sufficient and necessary condition of solution uniqueness. Through this method, the sufficient sampling number of exact reconstruction is quantified for any fixed phantom and settled geometrical parameter in the limited-view problem. This paper provides a reference to quantify the sampling condition. Using Shepp-Logan phantom as an example, the experiment results show the quantified sampling number and indicate that an object would be accurately reconstructed as the scanning range becomes narrower by increasing sampling number. The increased samplings compensate for the deficiency of the projection angle. However, a lower bound of the scanning range is presented, in which an exact reconstruction cannot be obtained once the projection angle is narrowed to this extent no matter how to increase sampling.

Characterization and compression of dissipative-soliton-resonance pulses in fiber lasers

We report numerical and experimental studies of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) in a fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. The DSR pulse presents temporally a flat-top profile and a clamped peak power. Its spectrum has a rectangle profile with characteristic steep edges. It shows a unique behavior as pulse energy increases: The rectangle part of the spectrum is unchanged while the newly emerging spectrum sits on the center part and forms a peak. Experimental observations match well with the numerical results. Moreover, compression of the DSR pulses is both numerically and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. An experimentally obtained DSR pulse of 63 ps duration is compressed down to 760 fs, with low-intensity pedestals using a grating pair. Before being compressed to its narrowest width, the pulse firstly evolves into a cat-ear profile, and the corresponding autocorrelation trace shows a crown shape, which distinguishes itself from properties of other solitons formed in fiber lasers.

Unidirectional dissipative soliton operation in an-normal-dispersion bidirectional Yb-doped fiber laser without an isolator

We demonstrate self-started unidirectional dissipative soliton operation and noise-like pulse operation in an all-normal-dispersion bidirectional Yb-doped fiber laser mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation. The laser works unidirectional once mode locking was achieved due to the cavity directional nonlinearity asymmetry along with the nonlinear polarization rotation mode locking mechanism.

Generation of pseudo-high-order group velocity locked vector solitons in fiber lasers

We propose and experimentally demonstrate the generation of pseudo-high-order group velocity locked vector solitons (GVLVS) in a fiber laser using a SESAM as the mode locker. With the help of an external all-fiber polarization resolved system, a GVLVS with a two-humped pulse along one polarization while a single-humped pulse along the orthogonal polarization could be obtained. The phase difference between the two humps is 180 degree.

A bipartite separable ball and its applications

In this paper, based on a matrix norm, we first present a ball of separable unnormalized states around the identity matrix for the bipartite quantum system, which is larger than the separable ball in Frobenius norm. Then the proposed ball is used to get not only simple sufficient conditions for the separability of pseudopure states and the states with strong positive partial transposes, but also a separable ball centered at the identity matrix for the multipartite quantum system.

Raman-scattering-assistant broadband noise-like pulse generation in all-normal-dispersion fiber lasers

We report on the observation of both stable dissipative solitons and noise-like pulses with the presence of strong Raman scattering in a relatively short all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser. We show that Raman scattering can be filtered out by intracavity filter. Furthermore, by appropriate intracavity polarization control, the Raman effect can be utilized to generate broadband noise-like pulses (NLPs) with bandwidth up to 61.4 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the broadest NLP achieved in all-normal-dispersion fiber lasers

A first-principle study of half-Heusler alloys CKMg and SiKMg

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of half-Heusler alloys CKMg and SiKMg are studied by using first-principle density functional theory. The calculations reveal the SiKMg alloy is a half-metallic ferromagnet with the magnetic moment of 1 $μ_B$ per formula unit at equilibrium lattice constant. The magnetic moment mainly originates from the strong spin-polarization of $p$ electrons of Si atom and partial involvement of $d$ electrons of K atom. The half-metallic gap is 0.105 eV. The robustness of half-metallic against the lattice constants for SiKMg is also calculated. CKMg alloy is nearly half-metallic with a spin polarization of 99.99 \%\ at equilibrium lattice constant, but it is a good half-metallic alloy when a low pressure is applied. This shows CKMg is a very promising spintronic functional material.

An Open Source Testing Tool for Evaluating Handwriting Input Methods

This paper presents an open source tool for testing the recognition accuracy of Chinese handwriting input methods. The tool consists of two modules, namely the PC and Android mobile client. The PC client reads handwritten samples in the computer, and transfers them individually to the Android client in accordance with the socket communication protocol. After the Android client receives the data, it simulates the handwriting on screen of client device, and triggers the corresponding handwriting recognition method. The recognition accuracy is recorded by the Android client. We present the design principles and describe the implementation of the test platform. We construct several test datasets for evaluating different handwriting recognition systems, and conduct an objective and comprehensive test using six Chinese handwriting input methods with five datasets. The test results for the recognition accuracy are then compared and analyzed.

Half-metallic ferromagnetism in the RbSe and CsTe compounds with CsCl structure: A first-principles study

We investigate the electronic structures and magnetic properties of RbSe and CsTe compounds in CsCl, RS and ZB structures by using first-principles calculation. It is shown that these two compounds exhibit half-metallic ferromagnetism with an integer magnetic moment of 1.00 $μ_B$ per formula in all the three structures. Total energy calculations indicate the CsCl phase is more stable than the other two phases. We investigate these two compounds with CsCl structure in detail. The ferromagnetism results mainly from the spin-polarization of p states of anion Se (Te) for the two compounds. The half-metallicities of RbSe and CsTe compounds can be preserved up to 2.5\% and 0.8\% compression of lattice constants with respect to their equilibrium lattices, respectively.

First-principle study on bulk and (1 1 1) surface of MP (M=K and Rb) in rocksalt structure

The electronic and magnetic properties of bulk and (1 1 1) surfaces for MP (M=K ans Rb) in rocksalt structure have been investigated by employing first-principle calculations. The results reveal that the compounds are half-metallic ferromagnets at the equilibrium lattice constants with large half-metallic band gaps of 0.46 and 0.74 eV. The (111) surfaces of KP and RbP keep their bulk half-metallic property. We study the stabilities of the bulk compounds and their (1 1 1) surfaces as well.

$Ab$ $intito$ study on some new spin-gapless semiconductors: The Zr-based quanternary Heusler alloys

Employing $ab$ $intito$ electronic structure calculations, we have investigated electronic and magnetic properties of the Zr-based quanternary Heusler alloys: ZrCoVIn, ZrFeVGe, ZrCoFeP, ZrCoCrBe and ZrFeCrZ (Z=In and Ga). Our $ab$ $intito$ calculation results show that all the alloys are (or nearly) spin-gapless semiconductors. All the alloys have large band gaps, indicating the stability of them at room temperature. The Slater-Pauling behaviours of these alloys are discussed as well. The values of Curie temperature of all the alloys are estimated. And it is found that the values of the Curie temperature for all our calculated quanternary Heusler alloys are higher than that of room temperature.

In this letter, we investigate the magnetic properties, electronic structures, Slater-Pauling behaviours of some quanternary Heusler alloys with 4d and 3d transition metal elements. The energy levels of the minority-spin electronic band structures for all our calculated alloys are discussed. We have summaried 21 quanternary Heusler alloys. Our calculations indicate that the half metals ZrCoCrSi, ZrCoCrIn, ZrCoFeSi, ZrFeVAl, ZrFeVGa and NbFeCrAl have large spin-flip gaps.

Signaling Network Assessment of Mutations and Copy Number Variations Predicts Breast Cancer Subtype-specific Drug Targets

Individual cancer cells carry a bewildering number of distinct genomic alterations i.e., copy number variations and mutations, making it a challenge to uncover genomic-driven mechanisms governing tumorigenesis. Here we performed exome-sequencing on several breast cancer cell lines which represent two subtypes, luminal and basal. We integrated this sequencing data, and functional RNAi screening data (i.e., for identifying genes which are essential for cell proliferation and survival), onto a human signaling network. Two subtype-specific networks were identified, which potentially represent core-signaling mechanisms underlying tumorigenesis. Within both networks, we found that genes were differentially affected in different cell lines; i.e., in some cell lines a gene was identified through RNAi screening whereas in others it was genomically altered. Interestingly, we found that highly connected network genes could be used to correctly classify breast tumors into subtypes based on genomic alterations. Further, the networks effectively predicted subtype-specific drug targets, which were experimentally validated.

Physical white chaos generation

Physical chaos is a fascinating prospect for high-speed data security by serving as a masking carrier or a key source, but suffers from a colored spectrum that divulges system's intrinsic oscillations and degrades randomness. Here, we demonstrate that physical chaos with a white spectrum can be achieved by the optical heterodyning of two delayed-feedback lasers. A white chaotic spectrum with 1-dB fluctuation in a band of 11 GHz is experimentally obtained. The white chaos also has a perfect delta-like autocorrelation function and a high dimensionality of greater than 10, which makes chaos reconstruction extremely difficult and thus improves security.

Perturbations of frames

In this paper, we give some sufficient conditions under which perturbations preserve Hilbert frames and near-Riesz bases. Similar results are also extended to frame sequences, Riesz sequences and Schauder frames. It is worth mentioning that some of our perturbation conditions are quite different from those used in the previous literatures on this topic.

MoS2/MX2 heterobilayers: Bandgap engineering via tensile strain or external electrical field

We have performed a comprehensive first-principles study of the electronic and magnetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers MX2/MoS2 (M = Mo, Cr, W, Fe, V; X = S, Se). For M = Mo, Cr, W; X=S, Se, all heterobilayers show semiconducting characteristics with an indirect bandgap with the exception of the WSe2/MoS2 heterobilayer which retains the direct-band-gap character of the constituent monolayer. For M = Fe, V; X = S, Se, the MX2/MoS2 heterobilayers exhibit metallic characters. Particular attention of this study has been focused on engineering bandgap of the TMD heterobilayer materials via application of either a tensile strain or an external electric field. We find that with increasing either the biaxial or uniaxial tensile strain, the MX2/MoS2 (M=Mo, Cr, W; X=S, Se) heterobilayers can undergo a semiconductor-to-metal transition. For the WSe2/MoS2 heterobilayer, a direct-to-indirect bandgap transition may occur beyond a critical biaxial or uniaxial strain. For M (=Fe, V) and X (=S, Se), the magnetic moments of both metal and chalcogen atoms are enhanced when the MX2/MoS2 heterobilayers are under a biaxial tensile strain. Moreover, the bandgap of MX2/MoS2 (M=Mo, Cr, W; X=S, Se) heterobilayers can be reduced by the electric field. For two heterobilayers MSe2/MoS2 (M=Mo, Cr), PBE calculations suggest that the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition may occur under an external electric field. The transition is attributed to the enhanced spontaneous polarization. The tunable bandgaps in general and possible indirect-direct bandgap transitions due to tensile strain or external electric field endow the TMD heterobilayer materials a viable candidate for optoelectronic applications.

Order isomorphisms on function spaces

The classical theorems of Banach and Stone, Gelfand and Kolmogorov, and Kaplansky show that a compact Hausdorff space $X$ is uniquely determined by the linear isometric structure, the algebraic structure, and the lattice structure, respectively, of the space $C(X)$. In this paper, it is shown that for rather general subspaces $A(X)$ and $A(Y)$ of $C(X)$ and $C(Y)$ respectively, any linear bijection $T: A(X) \to A(Y)$ such that $f \geq 0$ if and only if $Tf \geq 0$ gives rise to a homeomorphism $h: X \to Y$ with which $T$ can be represented as a weighted composition operator. The three classical results mentioned above can be derived as corollaries. Generalizations to noncompact spaces and other function spaces such as spaces of uniformly continuous functions, Lipschitz functions and differentiable functions are presented.
