High-speed RF Switch Electronics for picking up of Electron-Positron Beam Bunches

Beam diagnostics is important to guarantee good quality of beam in particle accelerator. Both the electron and positron run in the tunnel in some modern electron positron colliders such as Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) to be built and Beijing Electron Positron Collider II (BEPC II). To measure the electron and positron beams, picking up of these two different bunches in real time is of notable concern. Because the time interval between adjacent electron and positron bunches is quite small, for example, 6 ns in CEPC, high-speed switch electronics is required. This paper presents the prototype design of a high-speed radio frequency (RF) electronics that can pick up nanosecond positron-electron beam bunches with a switching time of less than 6 ns. Fast separation of electron and positron is achieved based on RF switches and precise delay adjustment of the controlling signals (~10 ps). Initial tests have been conducted in the laboratory to evaluate the performance of electronics, the results indicate that this circuit can successfully pick up the bunch signal within a time interval of 6 ns, which makes it possible to further measure the electron and position beams simultaneously.

Flexoelectricity in antiferroelectric ceramics

Flexoelectricity (coupling between polarization and strain gradients) is a property of all dielectric materials that has been theoretically known for decades, but it is only relatively recently that it has begun to attract experimental attention. As a consequence, there are still entire families of materials whose flexoelectric performance is unknown. This is the case, for example, of antiferroelectrics: materials with an antipolar but switchable arrangement of dipoles. And yet, these materials could be flexoelectrically relevant because it has been hypothesised that the origin of their antiferroelectricity might be flexoelectric. In this work, we have measured the flexoelectricity of two different antiferroelectrics (PbZrO3 and AgNbO3) as a function of temperature, up to and beyond their Curie temperature. Neither flexoelectricity nor the flexocoupling coefficients are anomalously high, but the flexocoupling shows a sharp peak at the antiferroelectric phase transition.

Stochastic Primal-Dual Coordinate Method for Nonlinear Convex Cone Programs

Block coordinate descent (BCD) methods and their variants have been widely used in coping with large-scale nonconstrained optimization problems in many fields such as imaging processing, machine learning, compress sensing and so on. For problem with coupling constraints, Nonlinear convex cone programs (NCCP) are important problems with many practical applications, but these problems are hard to solve by using existing block coordinate type methods. This paper introduces a stochastic primal-dual coordinate (SPDC) method for solving large-scale NCCP. In this method, we randomly choose a block of variables based on the uniform distribution. The linearization and Bregman-like function (core function) to that randomly selected block allow us to get simple parallel primal-dual decomposition for NCCP. The sequence generated by our algorithm is proved almost surely converge to an optimal solution of primal problem. Two types of convergence rate with different probability (almost surely and expected) are also obtained. The probability complexity bound is also derived in this paper.

Existence of either a periodic collisional orbit or infinitely many consecutive collision orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem

In the restricted three-body problem, consecutive collision orbits are those orbits which start and end at collisions with one of the primaries. Interests for such orbits arise not only from mathematics but also from various engineering problems. In this article, using Floer homology, we show that there are either a periodic collisional orbit, or infinitely many consecutive collision orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem on each bounded component of the energy hypersurface for Jacobi energy below the first critical value.

Periodic solutions and regularization of a Kepler problem with time-dependent perturbation

We consider a Kepler problem in dimension two or three, with a time-dependent $T$-periodic perturbation. We prove that for any prescribed positive integer $N$, there exist at least $N$ periodic solutions (with period $T$) as long as the perturbation is small enough. Here the solutions are understood in a general sense as they can have collisions. The concept of generalized solutions is defined intrinsically and it coincides with the notion obtained in Celestial Mechanics via the theory of regularization of collisions.

Development of a time-to-digital converter ASIC for the upgrade of the ATLAS Monitored Drift Tube detector

The upgrade of the ATLAS muon spectrometer for high-luminosity LHC requires new trigger and readout electronics for the various elements of the detector. We present the design of a time-to-digital converter (TDC) ASIC prototype for the ATLAS Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) detector. The chip was fabricated in a GlobalFoundries 130 nm CMOS technology. Studies indicate that its timing and power consumption characteristics meet the design specifications, with a timing bin variation of 40 ps for all 48 channels with a power consumption of about 6.5 mW per channel.

eSource for clinical trials: Implementation and evaluation of a standards-based approach in a real world trial

Objective: The Learning Health System (LHS) requires integration of research into routine practice. eSource or embedding clinical trial functionalities into routine electronic health record (EHR) systems has long been put forward as a solution to the rising costs of research. We aimed to create and validate an eSource solution that would be readily extensible as part of a LHS. Materials and Methods: The EU FP7 TRANSFoRm project's approach is based on dual modelling, using the Clinical Research Information Model (CRIM) and the Clinical Data Integration Model of meaning (CDIM) to bridge the gap between clinical and research data structures, using the CDISC Operational Data Model (ODM) standard. Validation against GCP requirements was conducted in a clinical site, and a cluster randomised evaluation by site nested into a live clinical trial. Results: Using the form definition element of ODM, we linked precisely modelled data queries to data elements, constrained against CDIM concepts, to enable automated patient identification for specific protocols and prepopulation of electronic case report forms (e-CRF). Both control and eSource sites recruited better than expected with no significant difference. Completeness of clinical forms was significantly improved by eSource, but Patient Related Outcome Measures (PROMs) were less well completed on smartphones than paper in this population. Discussion: The TRANSFoRm approach provides an ontologically-based approach to eSource in a low-resource, heterogeneous, highly distributed environment, that allows precise prospective mapping of data elements in the EHR. Conclusion: Further studies using this approach to CDISC should optimise the delivery of PROMS, whilst building a sustainable infrastructure for eSource with research networks, trials units and EHR vendors.

Auxiliary Problem Principle of augmented Lagrangian with Varying Core Functions for Large-Scale Structured Convex Problems

The auxiliary problem principle of augmented Lagrangian (APP-AL), proposed by Cohen and Zhu (1984), aims to find the solution of a constrained optimization problem through a sequence of auxiliary problems involving augmented Lagrangian. The merits of this approach are two folds. First, the core function is usually separable, which makes the subproblems at each step decomposable and particularly attractive for parallel computing. Second, the choice of the core function is quite flexible. Consequently, by carefully specifying this function, APP-AL may reduce to some standard optimization algorithms. In this paper, we pursue enhancing such flexibility by allowing the core function to be non-identical at each step of the algorithm, and name it varying auxiliary problem principle (VAPP-AL). Depending on the problem structure, the varying core functions in VAPP-AL can be adapted to design new flexible and suitable algorithm for parallel and distributed computing. The convergence and O(1/t) convergence rate of VAPP-AL for convex problem with coupling objective and constraints is proved. Moreover, if this function is specialized to be quadratic, an o(1/t) convergence rate can be established. Interestingly, the new VAPP framework can cover several variants of Jacobian type augmented Lagrangian decomposition methods as special cases. Furthermore, our technique works for the convex problem with nonseparable objective and multi-blocks coupled linear constraints, which usually can not be handled by ADMM.

Phylogenomic Analyses of Large-scale Nuclear Genes Provide New Insights into the Evolutionary Relationships within the Rosids

The Rosids is one of the largest groups of flowering plants, with 140 families and ~70,000 species. Previous phylogenetic studies of the rosids have primarily utilized organelle genes that likely differ in evolutionary histories from nuclear genes. To better understand the evolutionary history of rosids, it is necessary to investigate their phylogenetic relationships using nuclear genes. Here, we employed large-scale phylogenomic datasets composed of nuclear genes, including 891 clusters of putative orthologous genes. Combined with comprehensive taxon sampling covering 63 species representing 14 out of the 17 orders, we reconstructed the rosids phylogeny with coalescence and concatenation methods, yielding similar tree topologies from all datasets. However, these topologies did not agree on the placement of Zygophyllales. Through comprehensive analyses, we found that missing data and gene tree heterogeneity were potential factors that may mislead concatenation methods, in particular, large amounts of missing data under high gene tree heterogeneity. Our results provided new insights into the deep phylogenetic relationships of the rosids, and demonstrated that coalescence methods may effectively resolve the phylogenetic relationships of the rosids with missing data under high gene tree heterogeneity.

A convex embedding for the rotating Kepler problem

In this note, we prove that below the first critical energy level, a proper combination of the Ligon-Schaaf and Levi-Civita regularization mappings provides a convex symplectic embedding of the energy surfaces of the planar rotating Kepler problem into $R^4$ endowed with its standard symplectic structure. A direct consequence is the dynamical convexity of the planar rotating Kepler problem, which has been established by Albers-Fish-Frauenfelder-van Koert by direct computations. This result opens up new approaches to attack the Birkhoff conjecture about the existence of a global surface of section in the restricted planar circular three body problem using holomorphic curve techniques.

Design and simulation of a 12-bit, 40 MSPS asynchronous SAR ADC for the readout of PMT signal

High precision and large dynamic range measurement are required in the readout systems for the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) in Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). This paper presents a prototype of 12-bit 40 MSPS Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) designed for the readout of LHAASO WCDA. Combining this ADC and the front-end ASIC finished in our previous work, high precision charge measurement can be achieved based on the digital peak detection method. This ADC is implemented based on power-efficient Successive Approximation Register (SAR) architecture, which incorporates the key parts such as Capacitive Digital-to-Analog Converter (CDAC), dynamic comparator and asynchronous SAR control logic. The simulation results indicate that the Effective Number Of Bits (ENOB) with a sampling rate of 40 MSPS is better than 10 bits in an input frequency range below 20 MHz, while its core power consumption is 6.6 mW per channel. The above results are good enough for the readout requirements of the WCDA.

The Trigger System for the External Target Experiment in CSR of HIRFL

A trigger system was designed for the external target experiment in the Cooling Storage Ring (CSR) of the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). Considering that different detectors are scattered in a large area, the trigger system is designed based on a master-slave structure and fiber-based serial data transmission technique. The trigger logic is organized in hierarchies, and flexible reconfiguration of the trigger function is achieved based on command register access or overall field-programmable gate array (FPGA) logic on-line reconfiguration controlled by remote computers. We also conducted tests to confirm the function of the trigger electronics, and the results indicate that this trigger system works well.

An Analogue Front-End ASIC Prototype Designed For PMT Signal Readout

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is designed for high energy gamma ray and cosmic ray detection. A Water Cherenkov Detector Array which is sensitive to gamma ray showers above a few hundred GeV is proposed to survey gamma ray sources. The WCDA consists of 3600 PhotoMultiplier Tubes (PMT) which collect the Cherenkov light produced by the shower particles in water. Both high precision time and charge measurement are required over a large dynamic range from 1 photo electron (P.E.) to 4000 P.E. Prototype of an analogue front-end Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) fabricated in Chartered 0.35 μm CMOS technology is designed to read out PMT signal in the WCDA. This ASIC employs leading edge discrimination and RC4 shaping structure; combined with the following Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) and Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), both the arrival time and charge of the PMT signal can be measured. Initial test results indicate that time resolution is better than 350 ps and charge resolution is better than 10% at 1 P.E. and better than 1% with large input signals (300 P.E. to 4000 P.E.). Besides, this ASIC has a small channel-to-channel crosstalk and low ambient temperature dependency.

De Sitter's Theory of Galilean Satellites and the Related Quasi-periodic Orbits

In this article, we investigate the mathematical part of De Sitter's theory on the Galilean satellites, and further extend this theory by showing the existence of some quasi-periodic librating orbits by applications of KAM theorems. After showing the existence of De Sitter's family of linearly stable periodic orbits in the Jupiter-Io-Europa-Ganymede model by averaging and reduction techniques in the Hamiltonian framework, we further discuss the possible extension of this theory to include a fourth satellite Callisto, and establish the existence of a set of positive measure of quasi-periodic librating orbits in both models for almost all choices of masses.

Kustaanheimo-Stiefel Regularization and the Quadrupolar Conjugacy

In this note, we present the Kustaanheimo-Stiefel regularization in a symplectic and quaternionic fashion. The bilinear relation is associated with the moment map of the $S^{1}$- action of the Kustaanheimo-Stiefel transformation, which yields a concise proof of the symplecticity of the Kustaanheimo-Stiefel transformation symplectically reduced by this circle action. The relation between the Kustaanheimo-Stiefel regularization and the Levi-Civita regularization is established via the investigation of the Levi-Civita planes. A set of Darboux coordinates (which we call Chenciner-Féjoz coordinates) is generalized from the planar case to the spatial case. Finally, we obtain a conjugacy relation between the integrable approximating dynamics of the lunar spatial three-body problem and its regularized counterpart, similar to the conjugacy relation between the extended averaged system and the averaged regularized system in the planar case.

Angular Momenta of Relative Equilibrium Motions and Real Moment Map Geometry

Chenciner and Jimenez Perez showed that the range of the spectra of the angular momenta of all the rigid motions of a fixed central configuration in a general Euclidean space form a convex polytope. In this note we explain how this result follows from a general real convexity theorem of O Shea and Sjamaar in symplectic geometry. Finally, we provide a representation theoretic description of the pushforward of the normalized measure under the real moment map for Riemannian symmetric pairs.
