Twisted bilayer U(1) Dirac spin liquids

When two layers of two-dimensional materials are assembled with a relative twist, moiré patterns arise, inducing a tremendous wealth of exotic phenomena. In this work, we consider twisting two triangular lattices hosting Dirac quantum spin liquids. A single decoupled layer is described by compact quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions (QED$_3$) with an emergent $\mathrm{U}(1)$ gauge field, which is assumed to flow to a strongly interacting fixed point in the IR with conformal symmetry. We use recent results for the quantum numbers of monopole operators, which tunnel $2 π$ fluxes of the compact gauge field. It is found that, in the bilayer system, interlayer monopole tunneling is a symmetry-allowed relevant perturbation which induces an (ordering) instability. We show using perturbation theory that upon twisting the two layers the system remains unstable under the interlayer interaction, but any finite twist angle softens this instability compared to the untwisted case. To analyse the resulting phase induced by the (twisted) interlayer tunneling, we use "conformal mean field theory", which reduces the interacting bilayer system to two copies of QED$_3$ coupled to background fields which are to be determined self-consistently. In the weak-coupling regime, where the interlayer coupling is weak compared to the energy scale set by the moiré lattice constant, we solve the self-consistency equations perturbatively. In the limit of strongly coupled layers, a local scaling approximation is used, and we find that the magnetically ordered state exhibits a lattice of magnetic vortices, with the lattice constant tunable through the twisting angle.

Anti-chiral order and spin reorientation transitions of triangle-based antiferromagnets

We show that triangle-based antiferromagnets with "anti-chiral" order display a non-trivial dependence of the spin orientation with an in-plane field. The spins evolve from rotating in the opposite sense to the field at very low fields to rotating in the same sense as the field above some critical field scale. In the latter regime the system displays first order transitions at which the spin angles jump, and these first order lines terminate in critical points in the Ising universality class. Application to Mn$_3$Sn is discussed.

Ultrafast optical excitation of magnetic dynamics in van der Waals magnets: Coherent magnons and BKT dynamics in NiPS$_3$

Optical pump-probe experiments carried out in the time domain reveal both the intrinsic low energy dynamics and its connections to higher energy excitations in correlated electron systems. In this work, we propose two microscopic mechanisms for the optical generation of coherent magnetic modes in van der Waals magnets, and derive the corresponding effective light-spin interactions: either through pumping atomic orbital excitations resonantly or via a light-induced Floquet spin Hamiltonian, the ground state of the system is driven out of equilibrium. The subsequent long-time relaxational dynamics can then be probed using, e.g. the magneto-optical Kerr effect or transient grating spectroscopy. As an example, we apply our framework to NiPS$_3$, which is magnetically ordered in the bulk, and is conjectured to realize the XY model in the monolayer limit. Our theory makes explicit how the material's low-energy response depends sensitively on the microscopic details of the light-spin coupling as well as pump fluence, frequency and polarization. For the case of bulk NiPS$_3$, we find quantitative agreement with recent experiments by Afanasiev et al. [Science Advances 7, abf3096 (2021)]. We further propose pump-probe experiments for monolayer NiPS$_3$ and detail how anomalous relaxational behaviour may reveal excitations of a (proximate) BKT phase in a proposed effective XY model.

Realization of Quantum Dipoles in Triangular Lattice Crystal Ba3Yb(BO3)3

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the ytterbium-based triangular lattice compound Ba3Yb(BO3)3. The results demonstrate the absence of any long-range ordering down to 56 mK. Analysis of the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat measurements suggests that Ba3Yb(BO3)3 may realize a S = 1/2 quantum dipole lattice, in which the dominant interaction is the long range dipole-dipole coupling on the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice, and exchange interactions are subdominant or negligible.

The free energy of twisting spins in Mn$_3$Sn

The magnetic free energy is usually quadratic in magnetic field and depends on the mutual orientation of the magnetic field and the crystalline axes. Tiny in magnitude, this magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) is nevertheless indispensable for the existence of permanent magnets. Here, we show that in Mn$_3$Sn, a non-collinear antiferromagnet attracting much attention following the discovery of its large anomalous Hall effect, the free energy of spins has superquadratic components, which drive the MAE. We experimentally demonstrate that the thermodynamic free energy includes terms odd in magnetic field ($\mathcal{O}(H^3)+\mathcal{O}(H^5)$) and generating sixfold and twelve-fold angular oscillations in the torque response. We show that they are quantitatively explained by theory, which can be used to quantify relevant energy scales (Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya, Zeeman and single-ion anisotropy) of the system. Based on the theory, we conclude that, in contrast with common magnets, what drives the MAE in Mn$_3$Sn is the field-induced deformation of the spin texture.

Heterobilayer moiré magnets: moiré skyrmions and the commensurate-incommensurate transition

We study untwisted heterobilayers of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic van der Waals materials, with in particular a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the ferromagnetic layer. A continuum low energy field theory is utilized to study such systems. We develop a phase diagram as a function of the strength of inter-layer exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, combining perturbative and strong coupling analyses with numerical simulations using Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations. Various moiré-periodic commensurate phases are found, and the commensurate-incommensurate transition is discussed. Among the commensurate phases, we observe an interesting skyrmion lattice phase wherein each moiré unit cell hosts one skyrmion.

Electronic instabilities of kagome metals: saddle points and Landau theory

We study electronic instabilities of a kagome metal with a Fermi energy close to saddle points at the hexagonal Brillouin zone face centers. Using parquet renormalization group, we determine the leading and subleading instabilities, finding superconducting, charge, orbital moment, and spin density waves. We then derive and use Landau theory to discuss how different primary density wave orders give rise to charge density wave modulations, as seen in the AV$_3$Sb$_5$ family, with A=K,Rb,Cs. The results provide strong constraints on the mechanism of charge ordering and how it can be further refined from existing and future experiments.

Rotation symmetry breaking in the normal state of a kagome superconductor KV3Sb5

Recently discovered kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) provide a fresh opportunity to realize and study correlation-driven electronic phenomena on a kagome lattice. The observation of a 2a0 by 2a0 charge density wave (CDW) in the normal state of all members of AV3Sb5 kagome family has generated an enormous amount of interest, in an effort to uncover the nature of this CDW state, and identify any "hidden" broken symmetries. We use spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy to reveal a pronounced intensity anisotropy between different 2a0 CDW directions in KV3Sb5. In particular, by examining the strength of ordering wave vectors as a function of energy in Fourier transforms of differential conductance maps, we find that one of the CDW directions is distinctly different compared to the other two. This observation points towards an intrinsic rotation symmetry broken electronic ground state, where the symmetry is reduced from C6 to C2. Furthermore, in contrast to previous reports, we find that the CDW phase is insensitive to magnetic field direction, regardless of the presence or absence of atomic defects. Our experiments, combined with earlier observations of a stripe 4a0 charge ordering in CsV3Sb5, establish correlation-driven rotation symmetry breaking as a unifying feature of AV3Sb5 kagome superconductors.

Phonon Hall Viscosity in Magnetic Insulators

The Phonon Hall Viscosity is the leading term evincing time-reversal symmetry breaking in the low energy description of lattice phonons. It may generate phonon Berry curvature, and can be observed experimentally through the acoustic Faraday effect and thermal Hall transport. We present a systematic procedure to obtain the phonon Hall viscosity induced by phonon-magnon interactions in magnetic insulators under an external magnetic field. We obtain a general symmetry criterion that leads to non-zero Faraday rotation and Hall conductivity, and clarify the interplay between lattice symmetry, spin-orbit-coupling, external magnetic field and magnetic ordering. The symmetry analysis is verified through a microscopic calculation. By constructing the general symmetry-allowed effective action that describes the spin dynamics and spin-lattice coupling, and then integrating out the spin fluctuations, the leading order time-reversal breaking term in the phonon effective action, i.e. the phonon Hall viscosity, can be obtained. The analysis of the square lattice antiferromagnet for a cuprate Mott insulator, Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, is presented explicitly, and the procedure described here can be readily generalized to other magnetic insulators.

Cascade of correlated electron states in a kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5

The kagome lattice of transition metal atoms provides an exciting platform to study electronic correlations in the presence of geometric frustration and nontrivial band topology, which continues to bear surprises. In this work, using spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we discover a cascade of different symmetry-broken electronic states as a function of temperature in a new kagome superconductor, CsV3Sb5. At a temperature far above the superconducting transition Tc ~ 2.5 K, we reveal a tri-directional charge order with a 2a0 period that breaks the translation symmetry of the lattice. As the system is cooled down towards Tc, we observe a prominent V-shape spectral gap opening at the Fermi level and an additional breaking of the six-fold rotation symmetry, which persists through the superconducting transition. This rotation symmetry breaking is observed as the emergence of an additional 4a0 unidirectional charge order and strongly anisotropic scattering in differential conductance maps. The latter can be directly attributed to the orbital-selective renormalization of the V kagome bands. Our experiments reveal a complex landscape of electronic states that can co-exist on a kagome lattice, and provide intriguing parallels to high-Tc superconductors and twisted bilayer graphene.

Hybrid Wannier Chern bands in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene and the quantized anomalous Hall effect

We propose a method for studying the strong interaction regimes in twisted bilayer graphene using hybrid Wannier functions, that are Wannier-like in one direction and Bloch-like in the other. We focus on the active bands as given by the continuum model proposed by Bistritzer and MacDonald, and discuss the properties of corresponding hybrid Wannier functions. We then employ the method for a study of the fillings of $\pm 3$ electrons per moiré cell using the Hartree-Fock method. We discuss at length different regimes under which a quantized anomalous Hall effect is seen in these two fillings.

Current Switching of Valley Polarization in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrate can exhibit an anomalous Hall effect at 3/4 filling due to the spontaneous valley polarization in valley resolved moiré bands with opposite Chern number [Science 367, 900 (2020), Science 365, 605 (2019)]. It was observed that a small DC current is able to switch the valley polarization and reverse the sign of the Hall conductance [Science 367, 900 (2020), Science 365, 605 (2019)]. Here, we discuss the mechanism of the current switching of valley polarization near the transition temperature, where bulk dissipative transport dominates. We show that for a sample with rotational symmetry breaking, a DC current may generate an electron density difference between the two valleys (valley density difference). The current induced valley density difference in turn induces a first order transition in the valley polarization. We emphasize that the inter-valley scattering plays a central role since it is the channel for exchanging electrons between the two valleys. We further estimate the valley density difference in the TBG/h-BN system with a microscopic model, and find a significant enhancement of the effect in the magic angle regime.

Frustrated Heisenberg $J_1-J_2$ model within the stretched diamond lattice of LiYbO2

We investigate the magnetic properties of LiYbO$_2$, containing a three-dimensionally frustrated, diamond-like lattice via neutron scattering, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements. The stretched diamond network of Yb$^{3+}$ ions in LiYbO$_2$ enters a long-range incommensurate, helical state with an ordering wave vector ${\bf{k}} = (0.384, \pm 0.384, 0)$ that "locks-in" to a commensurate ${\bf{k}} = (1/3, \pm 1/3, 0)$ phase under the application of a magnetic field. The spiral magnetic ground state of LiYbO$_2$ can be understood in the framework of a Heisenberg $J_1-J_2$ Hamiltonian on a stretched diamond lattice, where the propagation vector of the spiral is uniquely determined by the ratio of $J_2/|J_1|$. The pure Heisenberg model, however, fails to account for the relative phasing between the Yb moments on the two sites of the bipartite lattice, and this detail as well as the presence of an intermediate, partially disordered, magnetic state below 1 K suggests interactions beyond the classical Heisenberg description of this material.

CsV$_3$Sb$_5$: a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological kagome metal with a superconducting ground state

Recently discovered alongside its sister compounds KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_5$, CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ crystallizes with an ideal kagome network of vanadium and antimonene layers separated by alkali metal ions. This work presents the electronic properties of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, demonstrating bulk superconductivity in single crystals with a T$_{c} = 2.5$K. The normal state electronic structure is studied via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), which categorize CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological metal. Multiple protected Dirac crossings are predicted in close proximity to the Fermi level ($E_F$), and signatures of normal state correlation effects are also suggested by a high temperature charge density wave-like instability. The implications for the formation of unconventional superconductivity in this material are discussed.

Dynamical signatures of quasiparticle interactions in quantum spin chains

We study the transverse dynamical susceptibility of an antiferromagnetic spin$-1/2$ chain in presence of a longitudinal Zeeman field. In the low magnetization regime in the gapless phase, we show that the marginally irrelevant backscattering interaction between the spinons creates a non-zero gap between two branches of excitations at small momentum. We further demonstrate how this gap varies upon introducing a second neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction, vanishing in the limit of a non-interacting "spinon gas". In the high magnetization regime, as the Zeeman field approaches the saturation value, we uncover the appearance of two-magnon bound states in the transverse susceptibility. This bound state feature generalizes the one arising from string states in the Bethe ansatz solution of the integrable case. Our results are based on numerically accurate, unbiased matrix-product-state techniques as well as analytic approximations.

Field-tunable quantum disordered ground state in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYbO$_2$

Antiferromagnetically coupled S=1/2 spins on an isotropic triangular lattice is the paradigm of frustrated quantum magnetism, but structurally ideal realizations are rare. Here we investigate NaYbO$_2$, which hosts an ideal triangular lattice of $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments with no inherent site disorder. No signatures of conventional magnetic order appear down to 50 mK, strongly suggesting a quantum spin liquid ground state. We observe a two-peak specific heat and a nearly quadratic temperature dependence in accord with expectations for a two-dimensional Dirac spin liquid. Application of a magnetic field strongly perturbs the quantum disordered ground state and induces a clear transition into a collinear ordered state consistent with a long-predicted up-up-down structure for a triangular lattice XXZ Hamiltonian driven by quantum fluctuations. The observation of spin liquid signatures in zero field and quantum-induced ordering in intermediate fields in the same compound demonstrate an intrinsically quantum disordered ground state. We conclude that NaYbO$_2$ is a model, versatile platform for exploring spin liquid physics with full tunability of field and temperature.

Spin excitations in the frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYbO$_2$

Here we present a neutron scattering-based study of magnetic excitations and magnetic order in NaYbO$_2$ under the application of an external magnetic field. The crystal electric field-split $J = 7/2$ multiplet structure is determined, revealing a mixed $|m_z>$ ground state doublet and is consistent with a recent report Ding et al. [1]. Our measurements further suggest signatures of exchange effects in the crystal field spectrum, manifested by a small splitting in energy of the transition into the first excited doublet. The field-dependence of the low-energy magnetic excitations across the transition from the quantum disordered ground state into the fluctuation-driven ordered regime is analyzed. Signs of a first-order phase transition into a noncollinear ordered state are revealed at the upper-field phase boundary of the ordered regime, and higher order magnon scattering, suggestive of strong magnon-magnon interactions, is resolved within the previously reported $up-up-down$ phase. Our results reveal a complex phase diagram of field-induced order and spin excitations within NaYbO$_2$ and demonstrate the dominant role of quantum fluctuations cross a broad range of fields within its interlayer frustrated triangular lattice.

Dimer description of the SU(4) antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

In systems with many local degrees of freedom, high-symmetry points in the phase diagram can provide an important starting point for the investigation of their properties throughout the phase diagram. In systems with both spin and orbital (or valley) degrees of freedom such a starting point gives rise to SU(4)-symmetric models. Here we consider SU(4)-symmetric "spin" models, corresponding to Mott phases at half-filling, i.e. the six-dimensional representation of SU(4). This may be relevant to twisted multilayer graphene. In particular, we study the SU(4) antiferromagnetic "Heisenberg" model on the triangular lattice, both in the classical limit and in the quantum regime. Carrying out a numerical study using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we argue that the ground state is non-magnetic. We then derive a dimer expansion of the SU(4) spin model. An exact diagonalization (ED) study of the effective dimer model suggests that the ground state breaks translation invariance, forming a valence bond solid (VBS) with a 12-site unit cell. Finally, we consider the effect of SU(4)-symmetry breaking interactions due to Hund's coupling, and argue for a possible phase transition between a VBS and a magnetically ordered state.
