Multiplicity of closed Reeb orbits on contact manifolds with periodic equivariant symplectic homology

We consider closed contact manifolds $(M,\xi)$ with periodic positive equivariant symplectic homology. This is a very large class of contact manifolds and, to the best of our knowledge, includes all currently known examples admitting Reeb flows with finitely many closed orbits for which this homology is well defined. Under weak and homologically natural index assumptions on a non-degenerate contact form $\alpha$ on $M$, we establish a sharp lower bound $r_M$ for the number of simple closed Reeb orbits of $\alpha$. The quantity $r_M$ is completely defined in terms of the positive equivariant symplectic homology of $M$. Moreover, we show that this bound is attained if and only if $\alpha$ is lacunary, i.e., the Conley-Zehnder indices of all closed orbits have the same parity. Consequently, the invariant $r_M$ admits a clean dynamical characterization: whenever $M$ admits a non-degenerate lacunary contact form, $r_M$ equals the number of its simple closed Reeb orbits and is therefore independent of the choice of such a form. In particular, in the lacunary case the number of such orbits is a contact invariant completely determined by Floer theory. We compute $r_M$ for a broad class of examples, including several prequantizations of symplectic orbifolds, and show that in this case $r_M=\dim H_*(M/S^1;\mathbb{Q})$, thereby giving a topological characterization of the invariant. Motivated by these results, we conjecture that any contact form with finitely many closed Reeb orbits is necessarily non-degenerate and lacunary, and that the underlying contact manifold is a prequantization of this type.

Contact flexibility and rigidity for toric Gorenstein prequantizations and Ehrhart theory of toric diagrams

Gorenstein toric contact manifolds are good toric contact manifolds with zero first Chern class that are completely determined by certain integral convex polytopes called toric diagrams. The Ehrhart polynomial of these toric diagrams determines and is determined by the contact Betti numbers of the corresponding contact manifolds, i.e. the dimension of their cylindrical contact homology in eachdegree. In this paper we look into the following natural question: to what extent do these contact invariants determine the Gorenstein toric contact manifold? Flexibility is the norm and we illustrate it with the family of Gorenstein toric contact manifolds that arise as the prequantization of monotone iterated ${\mathbb P}^1$-bundles, i.e. monotone Bott manifolds. In each dimension, the Ehrhart polynomial of their toric diagrams is equal to the Ehrhart polynomial of the cross-polytope, corresponding to the monotone prequantization of ${\mathbb P}^1 \times \cdots \times {\mathbb P}^1$, and we describe the unimodular classification of these toric diagrams. On the rigidity side, we will show that the primitive prequantization of ${\mathbb P}^1 \times \cdots \times {\mathbb P}^1$ is rigid, i.e. completely determined as a Gorenstein toric contact manifold by its contact Betti numbers. More precisely, in each dimension, we show that its toric diagram, which we name small cross-polytope, is the unique toric diagram with its particular Ehrhart polynomial. We will also prove a rigidity result for a family of Gorenstein toric contact manifolds that arise as the primitive prequantization of monotone ${\mathbb P}^1$-bundles over ${\mathbb P}^{n-1}$.

Periodic orbits of non-degenerate lacunary contact forms on prequantization bundles

A non-degenerate contact form is lacunary if the indexes of every contractible periodic Reeb orbit have the same parity. To the best of our knowledge, every contact form with finitely many periodic orbits known so far is non-degenerate and lacunary. We show that every non-degenerate lacunary contact form on a suitable prequantization of a closed symplectic manifold $B$ has precisely $r_B$ contractible closed orbits, where $r_B=\dim \mathrm{H}_*(B;{\mathbb Q})$. Examples of such prequantizations include the standard contact sphere, the unit cosphere bundle of a compact rank one symmetric space (CROSS) and many others. We also consider some prequantizations of orbifolds, like lens spaces and the unit cosphere bundle of lens spaces, and obtain multiplicity results for these prequantizations.

Symmetric periodic Reeb orbits on the sphere

A long standing conjecture in Hamiltonian Dynamics states that every contact form on the standard contact sphere $S^{2n+1}$ has at least $n+1$ simple periodic Reeb orbits. In this work, we consider a refinement of this problem when the contact form has a suitable symmetry and we ask if there are at least $n+1$ simple symmetric periodic orbits. We show that there is at least one symmetric periodic orbit for any contact form and at least two symmetric closed orbits whenever the contact form is dynamically convex.

Contact invariants of Q-Gorenstein toric contact manifolds, the Ehrhart polynomial and Chen-Ruan cohomology

Q-Gorenstein toric contact manifolds provide an interesting class of examples of contact manifolds with torsion first Chern class. They are completely determined by certain rational convex polytopes, called toric diagrams, and arise both as links of toric isolated singularities and as prequantizations of monotone toric symplectic orbifolds. In this paper we show how the cylindrical contact homology invariants of a Q-Gorenstein toric contact manifold are related to (i) the Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomial of its toric diagram; (ii) the Chen-Ruan cohomology of any crepant toric orbifold resolution of its corresponding toric isolated singularity; (iii) the Chen-Ruan cohomology of any monotone toric symplectic orbifold base that gives rise to it through prequantization.

Dynamical implications of convexity beyond dynamical convexity

We establish sharp dynamical implications of convexity on symmetric spheres that do not follow from dynamical convexity. It allows us to show the existence of elliptic and non-hyperbolic periodic orbits and to furnish new examples of dynamically convex contact forms, in any dimension, that are not equivalent to convex ones via contactomorphisms that preserve the symmetry. Moreover, these examples are $C^1$-stable in the sense that they are actually not equivalent to convex ones via contactomorphisms that are $C^1$-close to those preserving the symmetry. We also show the multiplicity of symmetric non-hyperbolic and symmetric (not necessarily non-hyperbolic) closed Reeb orbits under suitable pinching conditions.

On contact invariants of non-simply connected Gorenstein toric contact manifolds

The first two authors showed in~\cite{AM1} how the Conley-Zehnder index of any contractible periodic Reeb orbit of a non-degenerate toric contact form on a good toric contact manifold with zero first Chern class, i.e. a Gorenstein toric contact manifold, can be explicitly computed using moment map data. In this paper we show that the same explicit method can be used to compute Conley-Zehnder indices of non-contractible periodic Reeb orbits. Under appropriate conditions, the (finite) number of such orbits in a given free homotopy class and with a given index is a contact invariant of the underlying contact manifold. We compute these invariants for two sets of examples that satisfy these conditions: $5$-dimensional contact manifolds that arise as unit cosphere bundles of $3$-dimensional lens spaces, and $2n+1$-dimensional Gorenstein contact lens spaces. As applications, we will see that these invariants can be used to show that diffeomorphic lens spaces might not be contactomorphic and that there are homotopy classes of diffeomorphisms of some lens spaces that do not contain any contactomorphism. Following a suggestion by one referee, we will also see that this type of applications can be proved alternatively by looking at the total Chern class of these canonical contact structures on lens spaces.

Dynamical convexity and closed orbits on symmetric spheres

The main theme of this paper is the dynamics of Reeb flows with symmetries on the standard contact sphere. We introduce the notion of strong dynamical convexity for contact forms invariant under a group action, supporting the standard contact structure, and prove that in dimension $2n+1$ any such contact form satisfying a condition slightly weaker than strong dynamical convexity has at least $n+1$ simple closed Reeb orbits. For contact forms with antipodal symmetry, we prove that strong dynamical convexity is a consequence of ordinary convexity. In dimension five or greater, we construct examples of antipodally symmetric dynamically convex contact forms which are not strongly dynamically convex, and thus not contactomorphic to convex ones via a contactomorphism commuting with the antipodal map. Finally, we relax this condition on the contactomorphism furnishing a condition that has non-empty $C^1$-interior.

On the mean Euler characteristic of Gorenstein toric contact manifolds

We prove that the mean Euler characteristic of a Gorenstein toric contact manifold, i.e. a good toric contact manifold with zero first Chern class, is equal to half the normalized volume of the corresponding toric diagram and give some applications. A particularly interesting one, obtained using a result of Batyrev and Dais, is the following: twice the mean Euler characteristic of a Gorenstein toric contact manifold is equal to the Euler characteristic of any crepant toric symplectic filling, i.e. any toric symplectic filling with zero first Chern class.

Two closed orbits for non-degenerate Reeb flows

We prove that every non-degenerate Reeb flow on a closed contact manifold $M$ admitting a strong symplectic filling $W$ with vanishing first Chern class carries at least two geometrically distinct closed orbits provided that the positive equivariant symplectic homology of $W$ satisfies a mild condition. Under further assumptions, we establish the existence of two geometrically distinct closed orbits on any contact finite quotient of $M$. Several examples of such contact manifolds are provided, like displaceable ones, unit cosphere bundles, prequantization circle bundles, Brieskorn spheres and toric contact manifolds. We also show that this condition on the equivariant symplectic homology is preserved by boundary connected sums of Liouville domains. As a byproduct of one of our applications, we prove a sort of Lusternik-Fet theorem for Reeb flows on the unit cosphere bundle of not rationally aspherical manifolds satisfying suitable additional assumptions.

Transversality for local Morse homology with symmetries and applications

We prove the transversality result necessary for defining local Morse chain complexes with finite cyclic group symmetry. Our arguments use special regularized distance functions constructed using classical covering lemmas, and an inductive perturbation process indexed by the strata of the isotropy set. A global existence theorem for symmetric Morse-Smale pairs is also proved. Regarding applications, we focus on Hamiltonian dynamics and rigorously establish a local contact homology package based on discrete action functionals. We prove a persistence theorem, analogous to the classical shifting lemma for geodesics, asserting that the iteration map is an isomorphism for good and admissible iterations. We also consider a Chas-Sullivan product on non-invariant local Morse homology, which plays the role of pair-of-pants product, and study its relationship to symplectically degenerate maxima. Finally, we explore how our invariants can be used to study bifurcation of critical points (and periodic points) under additional symmetries.

Multiplicity of Closed Reeb Orbits on Prequantization Bundles

We establish multiplicity results for geometrically distinct contractible closed Reeb orbits of non-degenerate contact forms on a broad class of prequantization bundles. The results hold under certain index requirements on the contact form and are sharp for unit cotangent bundles of CROSS's. In particular, we generalize and put in the symplectic-topological context a theorem of Duan, Liu, Long, and Wang for the standard contact sphere. We also prove similar results for non-hyperbolic contractible closed orbits and briefly touch upon the multiplicity problem for degenerate forms. On the combinatorial side of the question, we revisit and reprove the enhanced common jump theorem of Duan, Long and Wang, and interpret it as an index recurrence result.

Dynamical convexity and elliptic periodic orbits for Reeb flows

A long-standing conjecture in Hamiltonian Dynamics states that the Reeb flow of any convex hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ carries an elliptic closed orbit. Two important contributions toward its proof were given by Ekeland in 1986 and Dell'Antonio-D'Onofrio-Ekeland in 1995 proving this for convex hypersurfaces satisfying suitable pinching conditions and for antipodal invariant convex hypersurfaces respectively. In this work we present a generalization of these results using contact homology and a notion of dynamical convexity first introduced by Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder for tight contact forms on $S^3$. Applications include geodesic flows under pinching conditions, magnetic flows and toric contact manifolds.

Isometry-invariant geodesics and the fundamental group, II

We show that on a closed Riemannian manifold with fundamental group isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}$, other than the circle, every isometry that is homotopic to the identity possesses infinitely many invariant geodesics. This completes a recent result of the second author.

Multiplicity of periodic orbits for dynamically convex contact forms

We give a sharp lower bound for the number of geometrically distinct contractible periodic orbits of dynamically convex Reeb flows on prequantizations of symplectic manifolds that are not aspherical. Several consequences of this result are obtained, like a new proof that every bumpy Finsler metric on $S^n$ carries at least two prime closed geodesics, multiplicity of elliptic and non-hyperbolic periodic orbits for dynamically convex contact forms with finitely many geometrically distinct contractible closed orbits and precise estimates of the number of even periodic orbits of perfect contact forms. We also slightly relax the hypothesis of dynamical convexity. A fundamental ingredient in our proofs is the common index jump theorem due to Y. Long and C. Zhu.

Brieskorn Manifolds, Positive Sasakian Geometry, and Contact Topology

Using $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology, in particular its mean Euler characteristic, of the natural filling of links of Brieskorn-Pham polynomials, we prove the existence of infinitely many inequivalent contact structures on various manifolds, including in dimension 5 the k-fold connected sums of $S^2\times S^3$ and certain rational homology spheres. We then apply our result to show that on these manifolds the moduli space of classes of positive Sasakian structures has infinitely many components. We also apply our results to give lower bounds on the number of components of the moduli space of Sasaki-Einstein metrics on certain homotopy spheres. Finally a new family of Sasaki-Einstein metrics of real dimension 20 on $S^5$ is exhibited.

On the Conley Conjecture for Reeb Flows

In this paper we prove the existence of infinitely many closed Reeb orbits for a certain class of contact manifolds. This result can be viewed as a contact analogue of the Hamiltonian Conley conjecture. The manifolds for which the contact Conley conjecture is established are the pre-quantization circle bundles with aspherical base. As an application, we prove that for a surface of genus at least two with a non-vanishing magnetic field, the twisted geodesic flow has infinitely many periodic orbits on every low energy level.
