Contraadjusted modules, contramodules, and reduced cotorsion modules

This paper is devoted to the more elementary aspects of the contramodule story, and can be viewed as an extended introduction to the more technically complicated arXiv:1503.05523. Reduced cotorsion abelian groups form an abelian category, which is in some sense covariantly dual to the category of torsion abelian groups. An abelian group is reduced cotorsion if and only if it is isomorphic to a product of p-contramodule abelian groups over prime numbers p. Any p-contraadjusted abelian group is p-adically complete, and any p-adically separated and complete group is a p-contramodule, but the converse assertions are not true. In some form, these results hold for modules over arbitrary commutative rings, while other formulations are applicable to modules over one-dimensional Noetherian rings.

Smooth duality and co-contra correspondence

The aim of this paper is to explain how to get a complex of smooth representations out of the dual vector space to a smooth representation of a p-adic Lie group, in natural characteristic. The construction does not depend on any finiteness/admissibility assumptions. Imposing such an assumption, one obtains an involutive duality on the derived category of complexes of smooth modules with admissible cohomology modules. The paper can serve as an introduction to the results about representations of locally profinite groups contained in the author's monograph on semi-infinite homological algebra arXiv:0708.3398.

Flat morphisms of finite presentation are very flat

Principal affine open subsets in affine schemes are an important tool in the foundations of algebraic geometry. Given a commutative ring $R$, $\,R$-modules built from the rings of functions on principal affine open subschemes in $\operatorname{Spec}R$ using ordinal-indexed filtrations and direct summands are called very flat. The related class of very flat quasi-coherent sheaves over a scheme is intermediate between the classes of locally free and flat sheaves, and has serious technical advantages over both. In this paper we show that very flat modules and sheaves are ubiquitous in algebraic geometry: if $S$ is a finitely presented commutative $R$-algebra which is flat as an $R$-module, then $S$ is a very flat $R$-module. This proves a conjecture formulated in the February 2014 version of the long preprint arXiv:1209.2995. We also show that the (finite) very flatness property of a flat module satisfies descent with respect to commutative ring homomorphisms of finite presentation inducing surjective maps of the spectra.

Infinity-tilting theory

We define the notion of an infinitely generated tilting object of infinite homological dimension in an abelian category. A one-to-one correspondence between $\infty$-tilting objects in complete, cocomplete abelian categories with an injective cogenerator and $\infty$-cotilting objects in complete, cocomplete abelian categories with a projective generator is constructed. We also introduce $\infty$-tilting pairs, consisting of an $\infty$-tilting object and its $\infty$-tilting class, and obtain a bijective correspondence between $\infty$-tilting and $\infty$-cotilting pairs. Finally, we discuss the related derived equivalences and t-structures.

Dedualizing complexes of bicomodules and MGM duality over coalgebras

This paper is based on the material of Section 4 and Appendix C in arXiv:1503.05523v6, which was excluded from the subsequent versions of arXiv:1503.05523. We present the definition of a dedualizing complex of bicomodules over a pair of cocoherent coassociative coalgebras $\mathcal C$ and $\mathcal D$. Given such a complex $\mathcal B^\bullet$, we construct an equivalence between the (bounded or unbounded) conventional, as well as absolute, derived categories of the abelian categories of left comodules over $\mathcal C$ and left contramodules over $\mathcal D$. Furthermore, we spell out the definition of a dedualizing complex of bisemimodules over a pair of semialgebras, and construct the related equivalence between the conventional or absolute derived categories of the abelian categories of semimodules and semicontramodules. Artinian, co-Noetherian, and cocoherent coalgebras are discussed as a preliminary material.

The tilting-cotilting correspondence

To a big n-tilting object in a complete, cocomplete abelian category A with an injective cogenerator we assign a big n-cotilting object in a complete, cocomplete abelian category B with a projective generator, and vice versa. Then we construct an equivalence between the (conventional or absolute) derived categories of A and B. Under various assumptions on A, which cover a wide range of examples (for instance, if A is a module category or, more generally, a locally finitely presentable Grothendieck abelian category), we show that B is the abelian category of contramodules over a topological ring and that the derived equivalences are realized by a contramodule-valued variant of the usual derived Hom-functor.

$S$-almost perfect commutative rings

Given a multiplicative subset $S$ in a commutative ring $R$, we consider $S$-weakly cotorsion and $S$-strongly flat $R$-modules, and show that all $R$-modules have $S$-strongly flat covers if and only if all flat $R$-modules are $S$-strongly flat. These equivalent conditions hold if and only if the localization $R_S$ is a perfect ring and, for every element $s\in S$, the quotient ring $R/sR$ is a perfect ring, too. The multiplicative subset $S\subset R$ is allowed to contain zero-divisors.

Weakly curved A-infinity algebras over a topological local ring

We define and study the derived categories of the first kind for curved DG and A-infinity algebras complete over a pro-Artinian local ring with the curvature elements divisible by the maximal ideal of the local ring. We develop the Koszul duality theory in this setting and deduce the generalizations of the conventional results about A-infinity modules to the weakly curved case. The formalism of contramodules and comodules over pro-Artinian topological rings is used throughout the paper. Our motivation comes from the Floer-Fukaya theory.

Exactness of direct limits for abelian categories with an injective cogenerator

We prove that the exactness of direct limits in an abelian category with products and an injective cogenerator J is equivalent to a condition on J which is well-known to characterize pure-injectivity in module categories, and we describe an application of this result to the tilting theory. We derive our result as a consequence of a more general characterization of when inverse limits in the Eilenberg-Moore category of a monad on the category of sets preserve regular epimorphisms.

On strongly flat and weakly cotorsion modules

The aim of this paper is to describe the classes of strongly flat and weakly cotorsion modules with respect to a multiplicative subset or a finite collection of multiplicative subsets in a commutative ring. The strongly flat modules are characterized by a set of conditions, while the weakly cotorsion modules are produced by a generation procedure. Passing to the collection of all countable multiplicative subsets, we define quite flat and almost cotorsion modules, and show that, over a Noetherian ring with countable spectrum, all flat modules are quite flat and all almost cotorsion modules are cotorsion.

Categorical Bockstein sequences

We construct the reduction of an exact category with a twist functor with respect to an element of its graded center in presence of an exact-conservative forgetful functor annihilating this central element. The procedure allows, e.g., to recover the abelian/exact category of modular representations of a finite group from the exact category of its l-adic representations. The construction uses matrix factorizations in a nontraditional way. We obtain the Bockstein long exact sequences for the Ext groups in the exact categories produced by reduction. Our motivation comes from the theory of Artin-Tate motives and motivic sheaves with finite coefficients, and our key techniques generalize those of Section 4 in arXiv:1006.4343

Nearly locally presentable categories

We introduce a new class of categories generalizing locally presentable ones. The distinction does not manifest in the abelian case and, assuming Vopenka's principle, the same happens in the regular case. The category of complete partial orders is the natural example of a nearly locally finitely presentable category which is not locally presentable.

Triangulated Matlis equivalence

This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1503.05523 and arXiv:1605.03934. We extend the classical Harrison-Matlis module category equivalences to a triangulated equivalence between the derived categories of the abelian categories of torsion modules and contramodules over a Matlis domain. This generalizes to the case of any commutative ring $R$ with a fixed multiplicative system $S$ such that the $R$-module $S^{-1}R$ has projective dimension $1$. The latter equivalence connects complexes of $R$-modules with $S$-torsion and $S$-contramodule cohomology modules. It takes a nicer form of an equivalence between the derived categories of abelian categories when $S$ consists of nonzero-divisors or the $S$-torsion in $R$ is bounded.

Koszulity of cohomology = $K(π,1)$-ness + quasi-formality

This paper is a greatly expanded version of Section 9.11 in arXiv:1006.4343. A series of definitions and results illustrating the thesis in the title (where quasi-formality means vanishing of a certain kind of Massey multiplications in the cohomology) is presented. In particular, we include a categorical interpretation of the "Koszulity implies $K(π,1)$" claim, discuss the differences between two versions of Massey operations, and apply the derived nonhomogeneous Koszul duality theory in order to deduce the main theorem. In the end we demonstrate a counterexample providing a negative answer to a question of Hopkins and Wickelgren about formality of the cochain DG-algebras of absolute Galois groups, thus showing that quasi-formality cannot be strengthened to formality in the title assertion.

Coherent rings, fp-injective modules, dualizing complexes, and covariant Serre-Grothendieck duality

For a left coherent ring A with every left ideal having a countable set of generators, we show that the coderived category of left A-modules is compactly generated by the bounded derived category of finitely presented left A-modules (reproducing a particular case of a recent result of Stovicek with our methods). Furthermore, we present the definition of a dualizing complex of fp-injective modules over a pair of noncommutative coherent rings A and B, and construct an equivalence between the coderived category of A-modules and the contraderived category of B-modules. Finally, we define the notion of a relative dualizing complex of bimodules for a pair of noncommutative ring homomorphisms A \to R and B \to S, and obtain an equivalence between the R/A-semicoderived category of R-modules and the S/B-semicontraderived category of S-modules. For a homomorphism of commutative rings A\to R, we also construct a tensor structure on the R/A-semicoderived category of R-modules. A vision of semi-infinite algebraic geometry is discussed in the introduction.

Dedualizing complexes and MGM duality

We show that various derived categories of torsion modules and contramodules over the adic completion of a commutative ring by a weakly proregular ideal are full subcategories of the related derived categories of modules. By the work of Dwyer-Greenlees and Porta-Shaul-Yekutieli, this implies an equivalence between the (bounded or unbounded) conventional derived categories of the abelian categories of torsion modules and contramodules. Over the adic completion of a commutative ring by an arbitrary finitely generated ideal, we obtain an equivalence between the derived categories of complexes of modules with torsion and contramodule cohomology modules. We also define two versions of the notion of a dedualizing complex over the adic completion of a commutative ring, one for an ideal with an Artinian quotient ring and the other one for a weakly proregular ideal, and use these to construct equivalences between the conventional as well as certain exotic derived categories of the abelian categories of torsion modules and contramodules. The philosophy of derived co-contra correspondence is discussed in the introduction.
