Two kinds of derived categories, Koszul duality, and comodule-contramodule correspondence

This paper can be thought of as an extended introduction to arXiv:0708.3398; nevertheless, most of its results are not covered by loc. cit. We consider the derived categories of DG-modules, DG-comodules, and DG-contramodules, the coderived and contraderived categories of CDG-modules, the coderived categories of CDG-comodules, and the contraderived categories of CDG-contramodules. The equivalence between the latter two categories (the comodule-contramodule correspondence) is established. Nonhomogeneous Koszul duality or "triality" (an equivalence between exotic derived categories corresponding to Koszul dual (C)DG-algebra and CDG-coalgebra) is obtained in the conilpotent and nonconilpotent versions. Various $A_\infty$-structures are considered, and a number of model category structures are described. Homogeneous Koszul duality and $D$-$Ω$ duality are discussed in the appendices.

Artin-Tate motivic sheaves with finite coefficients over an algebraic variety

We propose a construction of a tensor exact category F_X^m of Artin-Tate motivic sheaves with finite coefficients Z/m over an algebraic variety X (over a field K of characteristic prime to m) in terms of etale sheaves of Z/m-modules over X. Among the objects of F_X^m, in addition to the Tate motives Z/m(j), there are the cohomological relative motives with compact support M_cc^m(Y/X) of varieties Y quasi-finite over X. Exact functors of inverse image with respect to morphisms of algebraic varieties and direct image with compact supports with respect to quasi-finite morphisms of varieties Y\to X act on the exact categories F_X^m. Assuming the existence of triangulated categories of motivic sheaves DM(X,Z/m) over algebraic varities X over K and a weak version of the "six operations" in these categories, we identify F_X^m with the exact subcategory in DM(X,Z/m) consisting of all the iterated extensions of the Tate twists M_cc^m(Y/X)(j) of the motives M_cc^m(Y/X). An isomorphism of the Z/m-modules Ext between the Tate motives Z/m(j) in the exact category F_X^m with the motivic cohomology modules predicted by the Beilinson-Lichtenbaum etale descent conjecture (recently proven by Voevodsky, Rost, et al.) holds for smooth varieties X over K if and only if the similar isomorphism holds for Artin-Tate motives over fields containing K. When K contains a primitive m-root of unity, the latter condition is equivalent to a certain Koszulity hypothesis, as it was shown in our previous paper arXiv:1006.4343

Coherent analogues of matrix factorizations and relative singularity categories

We define the triangulated category of relative singularities of a closed subscheme in a scheme. When the closed subscheme is a Cartier divisor, we consider matrix factorizations of the related section of a line bundle, and their analogues with locally free sheaves replaced by coherent ones. The appropriate exotic derived category of coherent matrix factorizations is then identified with the triangulated category of relative singularities, while the similar exotic derived category of locally free matrix factorizations is its full subcategory. The latter category is identified with the kernel of the direct image functor corresponding to the closed embedding of the zero locus and acting between the conventional (absolute) triangulated categories of singularities. Similar results are obtained for matrix factorizations of infinite rank; and two different "large" versions of the triangulated category of relative singularities, corresponding to the approaches of Orlov and Krause, are identified in the case of a Cartier divisor. A version of the Thomason-Trobaugh-Neeman localization theory is proven for coherent matrix factorizations and disproven for locally free matrix factorizations of finite rank. Contravariant (coherent) and covariant (quasi-coherent) versions of the Serre-Grothendieck duality theorems for matrix factorizations are established, and pull-backs and push-forwards of matrix factorizations are discussed at length. A number of general results about derived categories of the second kind for CDG-modules over quasi-coherent CDG-algebras are proven on the way. Hochschild (co)homology of matrix factorization categories are discussed in an appendix.

Nonhomogeneous quadratic duality and curvature

This is a slightly corrected version of the article published by Functional Analysis and its Applications in 1993. We define the quadratic duality for algebras with nonhomogeneous relations; the duality between the algebra of differential operators and the multiplicative de Rham complex is a classical example. The scalar part of the relations is interpreted as the curvature. Chern classes of nonhomogeneneous quadratic algebras are introduced as certain obstructions; the Chern-Simons classes are also discussed. The Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem is considered in the context of the duality, and its simple proof is given.

Galois cohomology of a number field is Koszul

We prove that the Milnor ring of any (one-dimensional) local or global field K modulo a prime number l is a Koszul algebra over Z/l. Under mild assumptions that are only needed in the case l=2, we also prove various module Koszulity properties of this algebra. This provides evidence in support of Koszulity conjectures that were proposed in our previous papers. The proofs are based on the Class Field Theory and computations with quadratic commutative Groebner bases (commutative PBW-bases).

Koszul property and Bogomolov's conjecture

This is an enhanced version of the author's 1998 Harvard Ph.D. thesis, as published by IMRN in 2005. We propose an extension of Bogomolov's conjecture about commutator subgroups of Galois groups to arbitrary fields. A somewhat weaker conjecture is then shown to follow, together with the famous Milnor-Bloch-Kato conjecture, from a certain hypothesis about homological properties of the Milnor K-theory algebras.

Homological algebra of semimodules and semicontramodules: Semi-infinite homological algebra of associative algebraic structures

We develop the basic constructions of homological algebra in the (appropriately defined) unbounded derived categories of modules over algebras over coalgebras over noncommutative rings (which we call semialgebras over corings). We define double-sided derived functors SemiTor and SemiExt of the functors of semitensor product and semihomomorphisms, and construct an equivalence between the exotic derived categories of semimodules and semicontramodules. Certain (co)flatness and/or (co)projectivity conditions have to be imposed on the coring and semialgebra to make the module categories abelian (and the cotensor product associative). Besides, for a number of technical reasons we mostly have to assume that the basic ring has a finite homological dimension (no such assumptions about the coring and semialgebra are made). In the final sections we construct model category structures on the categories of complexes of semi(contra)modules, and develop relative nonhomogeneous Koszul duality theory for filtered semialgebras and quasi-differential corings. Our motivating examples come from the semi-infinite cohomology theory. Comparison with the semi-infinite (co)homology of Tate Lie algebras and graded associative algebras is established in appendices, and the semi-infinite homology of a locally compact topological group relative to an open profinite subgroup is defined. An application to the correspondence between complexes of representations of an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra on the complementary central charge levels ($c$ and $26-c$ for the Virasoro) is worked out.

Galois cohomology of certain field extensions and the divisible case of Milnor-Kato conjecture

We prove the "divisible case" of the Milnor-Bloch-Kato conjecture (which is the first step of Voevodsky's proof of this conjecture for arbitrary prime l) in a rather clear and elementary way. Assuming this conjecture, we construct a 6-term exact sequence of Galois cohomology with cyclotomic coefficients for any finite extension of fields whose Galois group has an exact quadruple of permutational representations over it. Examples include cyclic groups, dihedral groups, the biquadratic group Z/2\times Z/2, and the symmetric group S_4. Several exact sequences conjectured by Bloch-Kato, Merkurjev-Tignol, and Kahn are proven in this way. In addition, we introduce a more sophisticated version of the classical argument known as "Bass-Tate lemma". Some results about annihilator ideals in Milnor rings are deduced as corollaries.

Mixed Artin-Tate motives with finite coefficients

The goal of this paper is to give an explicit description of the triangulated categories of Tate and Artin-Tate motives with finite coefficients Z/m over a field K containing a primitive m-root of unity as the derived categories of exact categories of filtered modules over the absolute Galois group of K with certain restrictions on the successive quotients. This description is conditional upon (and its validity is equivalent to) certain Koszulity hypotheses about the Milnor K-theory/Galois cohomology of K. This paper also purports to explain what it means for an arbitrary nonnegatively graded ring to be Koszul. Exact categories, silly filtrations, and the K(π,1)-conjecture are discussed in the appendices. Tate motives with integral coefficients are considered in the "Conclusions" section.

The algebra of closed forms in a disk is Koszul

We prove that the algebra of closed differential forms in an (algebraic, formal, or analytic) disk with logarithmic singularities along several coordinate hyperplanes is (both nontopologically and topologically) Koszul. The connection with variations of mixed Hodge-Tate structures, based on a preprint by Andrey Levin, is discussed in the introduction.

Hochschild (co)homology of the second kind I

We define and study the Hochschild (co)homology of the second kind (known also as the Borel-Moore Hochschild homology and the compactly supported Hochschild cohomology) for curved DG-categories. An isomorphism between the Hochschild (co)homology of the second kind of a CDG-category B and the same of the DG-category C of right CDG-modules over B, projective and finitely generated as graded B-modules, is constructed. Sufficient conditions for an isomorphism of the two kinds of Hochschild (co)homology of a DG-category are formulated in terms of the two kinds of derived categories of DG-modules over it. In particular, a kind of "resolution of the diagonal" condition for the diagonal CDG-bimodule B over a CDG-category B guarantees an isomorphism of the two kinds of Hochschild (co)homology of the corresponding DG-category C. Several classes of examples are discussed.

On semi-infinite cohomology of finite dimensional graded algebras

We describe a general setting for the definition of semi-infinite cohomology of finite dimensional algebras, and provide its categorical interpretation. We apply this interpretation to compute semi-infinite cohomology of some modules over the small group at a root of unity, generalizing an earlier result of S. Arkhipov (conjectured by B. Feigin).

Koszul duality and Galois cohomology

It it shown that the Bloch-Kato conjecture on the norm residue homomorphism $K^M(F)/l \to H^*(G_F,Z/l)$ follows from its (partially known) low-degree part under the assumption that the Milnor K-theory algebra $K^M(F)/l$ modulo $l$ is Koszul. This conclusion is a case of a general result on the cohomology of nilpotent (co-)algebras and Koszulity.
