Rotational and translational diffusion in an interacting active dumbbell system

We study the dynamical properties of a two-dimensional ensemble of self-propelled dumbbells with only repulsive interactions. This model undergoes a phase transition between a homogeneous and a segregated phase and we focus on the former. We analyse the translational and rotational mean square displacements in terms of the Péclet number, describing the relative role of active forces and thermal fluctuations, and of particle density. We find that the four distinct regimes of the translational mean square displacement of the single active dumbbell survive at finite density for parameters that lead to a separation of time-scales. We establish the Péclet number and density dependence of the diffusion constant in the last diffusive regime. We prove that the ratio between the diffusion constant and its value for the single dumbbell depends on temperature and active force only through the Péclet number at all densities explored. We also study the rotational mean square displacement proving the existence of a rich behavior with intermediate regimes only appearing at finite density. The ratio of the rotational late-time diffusion constant and its vanishing density limit depends on the Péclet number and density only. At low Péclet number it is a monotonically decreasing function of density. At high Péclet number it first increases to reach a maximum and next decreases as a function of density. We interpret the latter result advocating the presence of large-scale fluctuations close to the transition, at large enough density, that favour coherent rotation inhibiting, however, rotational motion for even larger packing fractions.

Fluctuations of rotational and translational degrees of freedom in an interacting active dumbbell system

We study the dynamical properties of a two-dimensional ensemble of self-propelled dumbbells with only repulsive interactions. After summarizing the behavior of the translational and rotational mean-square displacements in the homogeneous phase that we established in a previous study, we analyze their fluctuations. We study the dependence of the probability distribution functions in terms of the Péclet number, describing the relative role of active forces and thermal fluctuations, and of particle density.

Magnetization dynamics: path-integral formalism for the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation

We construct a path-integral representation of the generating functional for the dissipative dynamics of a classical magnetic moment as described by the stochastic generalization of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation proposed by Brown, with the possible addition of spin-torque terms. In the process of constructing this functional in the Cartesian coordinate system, we critically revisit this stochastic equation. We present it in a form that accommodates for any discretization scheme thanks to the inclusion of a drift term. The generalized equation ensures the conservation of the magnetization modulus and the approach to the Gibbs-Boltzmann equilibrium in the absence of non-potential and time-dependent forces. The drift term vanishes only if the mid-point Stratonovich prescription is used. We next reset the problem in the more natural spherical coordinate system. We show that the noise transforms non-trivially to spherical coordinates acquiring a non-vanishing mean value in this coordinate system, a fact that has been often overlooked in the literature. We next construct the generating functional formalism in this system of coordinates for any discretization prescription. The functional formalism in Cartesian or spherical coordinates should serve as a starting point to study different aspects of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of magnets. Extensions to colored noise, micro-magnetism and disordered problems are straightforward.

Slicing the $3d$ Ising model: critical equilibrium and coarsening dynamics

We study the evolution of spin clusters on two dimensional slices of the $3d$ Ising model in contact with a heat bath after a sudden quench to a subcritical temperature. We analyze the evolution of some simple initial configurations, such as a sphere and a torus, of one phase embedded into the other, to confirm that their area disappears linearly in time and to establish the temperature dependence of the prefactor in each case. Two generic kinds of initial states are later used: equilibrium configurations either at infinite temperature or at the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition. We investigate the morphological domain structure of the coarsening configurations on $2d$ slices of the $3d$ system, comparing with the behavior of the bidimensional model.

Six vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions in the Bethe-Peierls approximation

We use the Bethe-Peierls method combined with the belief propagation algorithm to study the arctic curves in the six vertex model on a square lattice with domain-wall boundary conditions, and the six vertex model on a rectangular lattice with partial domain-wall boundary conditions. We show that this rather simple approximation yields results that are remarkably close to the exact ones when these are known, and allows one to estimate the location of the phase boundaries with relative little effort in cases in which exact results are not available.

Stochastic dynamics of collective modes for Brownian dipoles

The individual motion of a colloidal particle is described by an overdamped Langevin equation. When rotational degrees of freedom are relevant, these are described by a corresponding Langevin process. Our purpose is to show that the microscopic local density of colloids, in terms of a space and rotation state, also evolves according to a Langevin equation. The latter can then be used as the starting point of a variety of approaches, ranging from dynamical density functional theory to mode-coupling approximations.

Coarsening phenomena

This article gives a short description of pattern formation and coarsening phenomena and focuses on recent experimental and theoretical advances in these fields. It serves as an introduction to phase ordering kinetics and it will appear in the special issue `Coarsening dynamics', Comptes Rendus de Physique, edited by F. Corberi and P. Politi.

Dynamics of a homogeneous active dumbbell system

We analyse the dynamics of a two dimensional system of interacting active dumbbells. We characterise the mean-square displacement, linear response function and deviation from the equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem as a function of activity strength, packing fraction and temperature for parameters such that the system is in its homogeneous phase. While the diffusion constant in the last diffusive regime naturally increases with activity and decreases with packing fraction, we exhibit an intriguing non-monotonic dependence on the activity of the ratio between the finite density and the single particle diffusion constants. At fixed packing fraction, the time-integrated linear response function depends non-monotonically on activity strength. The effective temperature extracted from the ratio between the integrated linear response and the mean-square displacement in the last diffusive regime is always higher than the ambient temperature, increases with increasing activity and, for small active force it monotonically increases with density while for sufficiently high activity it first increases to next decrease with the packing fraction. We ascribe this peculiar effect to the existence of finite-size clusters for sufficiently high activity and density at the fixed (low) temperatures at which we worked. The crossover occurs at lower activity or density the lower the external temperature. The finite density effective temperature is higher (lower) than the single dumbbell one below (above) a cross-over value of the Peclet number.

Persistence in the two dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model

We present very accurate numerical estimates of the time and size dependence of the zero-temperature local persistence in the $2d$ ferromagnetic Ising model. We show that the effective exponent decays algebraically to an asymptotic value $θ$ that depends upon the initial condition. More precisely, we find that $θ$ takes one universal value $0.199(2)$ for initial conditions with short-range spatial correlations as in a paramagnetic state, and the value $0.033(1)$ for initial conditions with the long-range spatial correlations of the critical Ising state. We checked universality by working with a square and a triangular lattice, and by imposing free and periodic boundary conditions. We found that the effective exponent suffers from stronger finite size effects in the former case.

Numerical integration of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in generic time-discretisation schemes

We introduce a numerical method to integrate the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in spherical coordinates for generic discretization schemes. This method conserves the magnetization modulus and ensures the approach to equilibrium under the expected conditions. We test the algorithm on a benchmark problem: the dynamics of a uniformly magnetized ellipsoid. We investigate the influence of various parameters, and in particular, we analyze the efficiency of the numerical integration, in terms of the number of steps needed to reach a chosen long time with a given accuracy.

A morphological study of cluster dynamics between critical points

We study the geometric properties of a system initially in equilibrium at a critical point that is suddenly quenched to another critical point and subsequently evolves towards the new equilibrium state. We focus on the bidimensional Ising model and we use numerical methods to characterize the morphological and statistical properties of spin and Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters during the critical evolution. The analysis of the dynamics of an out of equilibrium interface is also performed. We show that the small scale properties, smaller than the target critical growing length $ξ(t) \sim t^{1/z}$ with $z$ the dynamic exponent, are characterized by equilibrium at the working critical point, while the large scale properties, larger than the critical growing length, are those of the initial critical point. These features are similar to what was found for sub-critical quenches. We argue that quenches between critical points could be amenable to a more detailed analytical description.

How soon after a zero-temperature quench is the fate of the Ising model sealed?

We study the transient between a fully disordered initial condition and a percolating structure in the low-temperature non-conserved order parameter dynamics of the bi-dimensional Ising model. We show that a stable structure of spanning clusters establishes at a time $t_p \simeq L^{α_p}$. Our numerical results yield $α_p=0.50(2)$ for the square and kagome, $α_p=0.33(2)$ for the triangular and $α_p=0.38(5)$ for the bowtie-a lattices. We generalise the dynamic scaling hypothesis to take into account this new time-scale. We discuss the implications of these results for other non-equilibrium processes.

Effective potential renormalization and polaronic mass shift in a trapped dynamical impurity-luttinger liquid system

Recent experiments with cold atoms on the impurity motion in one-dimensional liquids of interacting bosons have revealed an interesting interplay between the polaronic impurity mass shift and the renormalization of the optical potential. We show that the influence of the external trap on the Bose gas leads to a steeper effective potential for the impurity. We propose a framework in which this potential renormalization and the mass shift can be quantitatively understood by combining a semi-classical theory of density wave excitations in the Luttinger liquid with the non equilibrium formalism of a quantum Brownian particle. The obtained theoretical results reproduce well recent experimental data.

Out of equilibrium dynamics of classical and quantum complex systems

Equilibrium is a rather ideal situation, the exception rather than the rule in Nature. Whenever the external or internal parameters of a physical system are varied its subsequent relaxation to equilibrium may be either impossible or take very long times. From the point of view of fundamental physics no generic principle such as the ones of thermodynamics allows us to fully understand their behaviour. The alternative is to treat each case separately. It is illusionary to attempt to give, at least at this stage, a complete description of all non-equilibrium situations. Still, one can try to identify and characterise some concrete but still general features of a class of out of equilibrium problems - yet to be identified - and search for a unified description of these. In this report I briefly describe the behaviour and theory of a set of non-equilibrium systems and I try to highlight common features and some general laws that have emerged in recent years.

Defects dynamics following thermal quenches in square spin-ice

We present a study of the single spin flip stochastic dynamics of the two dimensional sixteen vertex model. We single out several dynamic regimes controlled by different processes that we describe. We analyse the emergence of very long-lived metastable states and their dependence on the system size, boundary conditions, and working parameters. We investigate the coarsening process after quenches into the ordered ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. We discuss our results in the context of artificial spin ice on square lattices.

Thermal phase transitions in Artificial Spin-Ice

We use the sixteen vertex model to describe bi-dimensional artificial spin ice (ASI). We find excellent agreement between vertex densities in fifteen differently grown samples and the predictions of the model. Our results demonstrate that the samples are in usual thermal equilibrium away from a critical point separating a disordered and an anti-ferromagnetic phase in the model. The second-order phase transition that we predict suggests that the spatial arrangement of vertices in near-critical ASI should be studied in more detail in order to verify whether they show the expected space and time long-range correlations.

Static properties of 2D spin-ice as a sixteen-vertex model

We present a thorough study of the static properties of 2D models of spin-ice type on the square lattice or, in other words, the sixteen-vertex model. We use extensive Monte Carlo simulations to determine the phase diagram and critical properties of the finite dimensional system. We put forward a suitable mean-field approximation, by defining the model on carefully chosen trees. We employ the cavity (Bethe-Peierls) method to derive self-consistent equations, the fixed points of which yield the equilibrium properties of the model on the tree-like graph. We compare mean-field and finite dimensional results. We discuss our findings in the context of experiments in artificial two dimensional spin ice.

Dynamic fluctuations in unfrustrated systems: random walks, scalar fields and the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase

We study analytically the distribution of fluctuations of the quantities whose average yield the usual two-point correlation and linear response functions in three unfrustrated models: the random walk, the $d$ dimensional scalar field and the 2d XY model. In particular we consider the time dependence of ratios between composite operators formed with these fluctuating quantities which generalize the largely studied fluctuation-dissipation ratio, allowing us to discuss the relevance of the effective temperature notion beyond linear order. The behavior of fluctuations in the aforementioned solvable cases is compared to numerical simulations of the 2d clock model with $p=6,12$ states.
