Dynamic correlations, fluctuation-dissipation relations, and effective temperatures after a quantum quench of the transverse field Ising chain

Fluctuation-dissipation relations, i.e., the relation between two-time correlation and linear response functions, were successfully used to search for signs of equilibration and to identify effective temperatures in the non-equilibrium behavior of a number of macroscopic classical and quantum systems in contact with thermal baths. Among the most relevant cases in which the effective temperatures thus defined were shown to have a thermodynamic meaning one finds the stationary dynamics of driven super-cooled liquids and vortex glasses, and the relaxation of glasses. Whether and under which conditions an effective thermal behavior can be found in quantum isolated many-body systems after a global quench is a question of current interest. We propose to study the possible emergence of thermal behavior long after the quench by studying fluctuation-dissipation relations in which (possibly time- or frequency-dependent) parameters replace the equilibrium temperature. If thermalization within the Gibbs ensemble eventually occurs these parameters should be constant and equal for all pairs of observables in "partial" or "mutual" equilibrium. We analyze these relations in the paradigmatic quantum system, i.e., the quantum Ising chain, in the stationary regime after a quench of the transverse field. The lack of thermalization to a Gibbs ensemble becomes apparent within this approach.

From non equilibrium quantum Brownian motion to impurity dynamics in 1D quantum liquids

Impurity motion in one dimensional ultra cold quantum liquids confined in an optical trap has attracted much interest recently. As a step towards its full understanding, we construct a generating functional from which we derive the position non equilibrium correlation function of a quantum Brownian particle with general Gaussian non-factorizing initial conditions. We investigate the slow dynamics of a particle confined in a harmonic potential after a position measurement; the rapid relaxation of a particle trapped in a harmonic potential after a quantum quench realized as a sudden change in the potential parameters; and the evolution of an impurity in contact with a one dimensional bosonic quantum gas. We argue that such an impurity-Luttinger liquid system, that has been recently realized experimentally, admits a simple modeling as quantum Brownian motion in a super Ohmic bath.

Critical Langevin dynamics of the O(N)-Ginzburg-Landau model with correlated noise

We use the perturbative renormalization group to study classical stochastic processes with memory. We focus on the generalized Langevin dynamics of the ϕ^4 Ginzburg-Landau model with additive noise, the correlations of which are local in space but decay as a power-law with exponent αin time. These correlations are assumed to be due to the coupling to an equilibrium thermal bath. We study both the equilibrium dynamics at the critical point and quenches towards it, deriving the corresponding scaling forms and the associated equilibrium and non-equilibrium critical exponents η, ν, z and θ. We show that, while the first two retain their equilibrium values independently of α, the non-Markovian character of the dynamics affects the dynamic exponents (z and θ) for α< α_c(D, N) where D is the spatial dimensionality, N the number of components of the order parameter, and α_c(x,y) a function which we determine at second order in 4-D. We analyze the dependence of the asymptotic fluctuation-dissipation ratio on various parameters, including α. We discuss the implications of our results for several physical situations.

Out of equilibrium dynamics in the bidimensional spin-ice model

We study the dynamics of 2d spin-ice following a quench from a fully disordered initial condition (equilibrium at infinite temperature) into its disordered, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. We analyze the evolution of the density of topological defects and we show that these take finite density over very long periods of time in all kinds of quenches. We identify the leading mechanisms for the growth of domains in the ordered phases and we evaluate the (anisotropically) growing lengths involved in dynamic scaling.

Geometrical properties of Potts model during the coarsening regime

We study the dynamic evolution of geometric structures in a poly-degenerate system represented by a $q$-state Potts model with non-conserved order parameter that is quenched from its disordered into its ordered phase. The numerical results obtained with Monte Carlo simulations show a strong relation between the statistical properties of hull perimeters in the initial state and during coarsening: the statistics and morphology of the structures that are larger than the averaged ones are those of the initial state while the ones of small structures are determined by the curvature driven dynamic process. We link the hull properties to the ones of the areas they enclose. We analyze the linear von-Neumann--Mullins law, both for individual domains and on the average, concluding that its validity, for the later case, is limited to domains with number of sides around 6, while presenting stronger violations in the former case.

Fluctuation-dissipation relations and critical quenches in the transverse field Ising chain

Dynamic correlation and response functions of classical and quantum systems in thermal equilibrium are connected by fluctuation-dissipation theorems, which allow an alternative definition of their (unique) temperature. Motivated by this fundamental property, we revisit the issue of thermalization of closed many-body quantum systems long after a sudden quench, focussing on the non-equilibrium dynamics of the Ising chain in a critical transverse field. We show the emergence of distinct observable-dependent effective temperatures, which rule out Gibbs thermalization in a strict sense but might still have a thermodynamic meaning.

Fluctuations of two-time quantities and time-reparametrization invariance in spin-glasses

This article is a contribution to the understanding of fluctuations in the out of equilibrium dynamics of glassy systems. By extending theoretical ideas based on the assumption that time-reparametrization invariance develops asymptotically we deduce the scaling properties of diverse high-order correlation functions. We examine these predictions with numerical tests in a standard glassy model, the 3d Edwards-Anderson spin-glass, and in a system where time-reparametrization invariance is not expected to hold, the 2d ferromagnetic Ising model, both at low temperatures. Our results enlighten a qualitative difference between the fluctuation properties of the two models and show that scaling properties conform to the time-reparametrization invariance scenario in the former but not in the latter.

Effective temperature of active complex matter

We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the dynamics of an ensemble of interacting self-propelled semi-flexible polymers in contact with a thermal bath. Our intention is to model complex systems of biological interest. We find that an effective temperature allows one to rationalize the out of equilibrium dynamics of the system. This parameter is measured in several independent ways -- from fluctuation-dissipation relations and by using tracer particles -- and they all yield equivalent results. The effective temperature takes a higher value than the temperature of the bath when the effect of the motors is not correlated with the structural rearrangements they induce. We show how to use this concept to interpret experimental results and suggest possible innovative research directions.

Non-conservative forces and effective temperatures in active polymers

We follow the dynamics of an ensemble of interacting self-propelled semi-flexible polymers in contact with a thermal bath. We characterize structure and dynamics of the passive system and as a function of the motor activity. We find that the fluctuation-dissipation relation allows for the definition of an effective temperature that is compatible with the results obtained by using a tracer particle as a thermometer. The effective temperature takes a higher value than the temperature of the bath when the effect of the motors is not correlated with the structural rearrangements they induce. Our data are compatible with a dependence upon the square of the motor strength (normalized by the average internal force) and they suggest an intriguing linear dependence on the tracer diffusion constant times the density of the embedding matrix. We show how to use this concept to rationalize experimental results and suggest possible innovative research directions.

Effective temperature of active matter

We follow the dynamics of an ensemble of interacting self-propelled motorized particles in contact with an equilibrated thermal bath. We find that the fluctuation-dissipation relation allows for the definition of an effective temperature that is compatible with the results obtained using a tracer particle as a thermometer. The effective temperature takes a value which is higher than the temperature of the bath and it is continuously controlled by the motor intensity.

The effective temperature

This review presents the effective temperature notion as defined from the deviations from the equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem in out of equilibrium systems with slow dynamics. The thermodynamic meaning of this quantity is discussed in detail. Analytic, numeric and experimental measurements are surveyed. Open issues are mentioned.

Quench dynamics of the 2d XY model

We investigate the out of equilibrium dynamics of the two-dimensional XY model when cooled across the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition using different protocols. We focus on the evolution of the growing correlation length and the density of topological defects (vortices). By using Monte Carlo simulations we first determine the time and temperature dependence of the growing correlation length after an infinitely rapid quench from above the transition temperature to the quasi-long range order region. The functional form is consistent with a logarithmic correction to the diffusive law and it serves to validate dynamic scaling in this problem. This analysis clarifies the different dynamic roles played by bound and free vortices. We then revisit the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in thermal phase transitions in which the disordered state is plagued with topological defects. We provide a theory of quenching rate dependence in systems with the BKT-type transition that goes beyond the equilibrium scaling arguments. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results to a host of physical systems with vortex excitations including planar ferromagnets and liquid crystals as well as the Ginzburg-Landau approach to bidimensional freely decaying turbulence.

Symmetries of generating functionals of Langevin processes with colored multiplicative noise

We present a comprehensive study of the symmetries of the generating functionals of generic Langevin processes with multiplicative colored noise. We treat both Martin-Siggia-Rose-Janssen-deDominicis and supersymmetric formalisms. We summarize the relations between observables that they imply including fluctuation relations, fluctuation-dissipation theorems, and Schwinger-Dyson equations. Newtonian dynamics and their invariances follow in the vanishing friction limit.

Coarsening of Disordered Quantum Rotors under a Bias Voltage

We solve the dynamics of an ensemble of interacting rotors coupled to two leads at different chemical potential letting a current flow through the system and driving it out of equilibrium. We show that at low temperature the coarsening phase persists under the voltage drop up to a critical value of the applied potential that depends on the characteristics of the electron reservoirs. We discuss the properties of the critical surface in the temperature, voltage, strength of quantum fluctuations and coupling to the bath phase diagram. We analyze the coarsening regime finding, in particular, which features are essentially quantum mechanical and which are basically classical in nature. We demonstrate that the system evolves via the growth of a coherence length with the same time-dependence as in the classical limit, $R(t) \simeq t^{1/2}$ -- the scalar curvature driven universality class. We obtain the scaling function of the correlation function at late epochs in the coarsening regime and we prove that it coincides with the classical one once a prefactor that encodes the dependence on all the parameters is factorized. We derive a generic formula for the current flowing through the system and we show that, for this model, it rapidly approaches a constant that we compute.

Growing length scales in aging systems

We summarize studies of growing lengths in different aging systems. The article is structured as follows. We recall the definition of a number of observables, typically correlations and susceptibilities, that give access to dynamic and static correlation lengths. We use a growing length perspective to review three out of equilibrium cases: domain growth phenomena; the evolution of Edwards-Wilkinson and Kardar-Parisi-Zhang manifolds and other directed elastic manifolds in random media; spin and structural glasses in relaxation and under an external drive. Finally, we briefly report on a mechanism for dynamic fluctuations in aging systems that is based on a time-reparametrization invariance scenario and may be at the origin of the dynamic growing length in glassy materials.

Kibble-Zurek mechanism and infinitely slow annealing through critical points

We revisit the Kibble-Zurek mechanism by analyzing the dynamics of phase ordering systems during an infinitely slow annealing across a second order phase transition. We elucidate the time and cooling rate dependence of the typical growing length and we use it to predict the number of topological defects left over in the symmetry broken phase as a function of time, both close and far from the critical region. Our results extend the Kibble-Zurek mechanism and reveal its limitations.

Curvature-driven coarsening in the two dimensional Potts model

We study the geometric properties of polymixtures after a sudden quench in temperature. We mimic these systems with the $q$-states Potts model on a square lattice with and without weak quenched disorder, and their evolution with Monte Carlo simulations with non-conserved order parameter. We analyze the distribution of hull enclosed areas for different initial conditions and compare our results with recent exact and numerical findings for $q=2$ (Ising) case. Our results demonstrate the memory of the presence or absence of long-range correlations in the initial state during the coarsening regime and exhibit super-universality properties.

Topics in coarsening phenomena

These lecture notes give a very short introduction to coarsening phenomena and summarize some recent results in the field. They focus on three aspects: the super-universality hypothesis, the geometry of growing structures, and coarsening in the spiral kinetically constrained model.
