Reshaped Three-Body Interactions and the Observation of an Efimov State in the Continuum

Efimov trimers are exotic three-body quantum states that emerge from the different types of three-body continua in the vicinity of two-atom Feshbach resonances. In particular, as the strength of the interaction is decreased to a critical point, an Efimov state merges into the atom-dimer threshold and eventually dissociates into an unbound atom-dimer pair. Here we explore the Efimov state in the vicinity of this critical point using coherent few-body spectroscopy in $^7$Li atoms using a narrow two-body Feshbach resonance. Contrary to the expectation, we find that the $^7$Li Efimov trimer does not immediately dissociate when passing the threshold, and survives as a metastable state embedded in the atom-dimer continuum. We identify this behavior with a universal phenomenon related to the emergence of a repulsive interaction in the atom-dimer channel which reshapes the three-body interactions in any system characterized by a narrow Feshbach resonance. Specifically, our results shed light on the nature of $^7$Li Efimov states and provide a path to understand various puzzling phenomena associated with them.

Observation of coherent oscillations in association of dimers from a thermal gas of ultracold atoms

We report the observation of coherent oscillations in conversion efficiency of weakly-bound dimers formed from a thermal gas of ultracold atoms. Finite thermal energy of the gas causes loss of coherence when a broad continuum is resonantly coupled to a discrete bound state. Restoration of the coherence can be achieved through non-adiabatic transitions of the dressed molecular energy level that are induced by a strong modulation pulse with fast envelope dynamics. Conditions to observe coherent oscillations are verified, and control of their properties is demonstrated. The main experimental findings are supported by theoretical modeling and numerical calculations. The observed results may lead to a renewed interest in general studies of a discrete energy level coupled to a broadband continuum when the properties of both are fully controlled.

Loosely Bound Few-Body States in a Spin-1 Gas with Near-Degenerate Continua

A distinguishing feature of ultracold collisions of bosonic lithium atoms is the presence of two near-degenerate two-body continua. The influence of such a near-degeneracy on the few-body physics in the vicinity of a narrow Feshbach resonance is investigated within the framework of a minimal model with two atomic continua and one closed molecular channel. The model allows analysis of the spin composition of loosely bound dimers and trimers. In the two-body sector the well-established coupled-channels calculations phenomenology of lithium is qualitatively reproduced, and its particularities are emphasized and clarified. In the three-body sector we find that the Efimov trimer energy levels follow a different functional form as compared to a single continuum scenario while the thresholds remain untouched. This three-channel model with two atomic continua complements our earlier developed three-channel model with two molecular channels [Y. Yudkin and L. Khaykovich, Phys. Rev. A 103, 063303 (2021)] and suggests that the experimentally observed exotic behavior of the first excited Efimov energy level [Y. Yudkin, R. Elbaz and L. Khaykovich, arXiv:2004.02723] is most probably caused by the short-range details of the interaction potential.

Efimov resonance position near a narrow Feshbach resonance in $^6$Li-$^{133}$Cs mixture

In the vicinity of a narrow Feshbach resonances Efimov features are expected to be characterized by the resonance's properties rather than the van der Waals length of the interatomic potential. Although this theoretical prediction is well-established by now, it still lacks experimental confirmation. Here, we apply our recently developed three-channel model [Yudkin and Khaykovich, Phys. Rev. A 103, 063303 (2021)] to the experimental result obtained in a mass-imbalanced $^6$Li-$^{133}$Cs mixture in the vicinity of the narrowest resonance explored to date [Johansen at. al. Nat. Phys. 13, 731 (2017)]. We confirm that the observed position of the Efimov resonance is dictated mainly by the resonance physics while the influence of the van der Waals tail of the interatomic potential is minor. We show that the resonance position is strongly influenced by the presence of another Feshbach resonance which significantly alters the effective background scattering length at the narrow resonance position.

Efimov scenario for overlapping narrow Feshbach resonances

While Efimov physics in ultracold atoms is usually modeled with an isolated Feshbach resonance many real world resonances appear in close vicinity to each other and are therefore overlapping. Here we derive a realistic model based on the mutual coupling of an open channel and two closed molecular channels while neglecting short-range physics as permitted by the narrow character of the considered resonances. The model is applied to three distinct scenarios with experimental relevance. We show that the effect of overlapping resonances is manifested most strikingly at a narrow resonance in whose vicinity there is a slightly narrower one. In this system the Efimov ground state extends not only over the scattering length zero crossing between the two resonances but also over the pole of the second resonance to finally meet the dissociation threshold below it. In the opposite scenario, when a narrow resonance is considered in the vicinity of a slightly broader one, we observe that the Efimov features are pushed to lower binding energies and smaller scattering lengths by a significant factor facilitating their experimental investigation. Both scenarios are referenced to the case of two narrow resonances which are far enough away from each other to be effectively decoupled. In this case the two-channel model results are recovered. Finally, we analyze the rich excitation spectrum of the system and construct and explain its nodal pattern.

Efimov energy level rebounding off the atom-dimer continuum

The Efimov effect, with its ladder of weakly bound three-atomic molecules, poses intriguing questions in the theoretically controversial and experimentally demanding regime of merging of the first excited Efimov energy level with the atom-dimer continuum. Using an original experimental technique, where a coherent superposition state of diatomic and triatomic molecules is utilized, we investigate this regime and reveal a striking behavior: Instead of merging with the atom-dimer continuum the trimer energy level rebounds from it and becomes a deeper bound state again. In addition, instead of a tangential approach between the two levels we observe a rather narrow resonance, providing a new challenge and guide for few-body theories to incorporate realistic interatomic potentials.

Extracting atoms one by one from a small matter-wave soliton

Excitations of small one-dimensional matter-wave solitons are considered within a framework of the attractive Bose-Hubbard model. The initial eigenstates of the system are found by exact diagonalization of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. We drive transitions between the eigenstates by inducing a weak modulation of the tunnelling rate and show that a single atom can be extracted while the remaining atoms stay localized despite the persistent external modulation. This scheme suggests the experimental realization of small matter-wave solitons with deterministic number of atoms. In addition, the knowledge of exact eigenstates allows identification of the selection rules for transitions between the different eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. One selection rule is related to the translation symmetry of the system. Another one is strictly applicable only on a subspace of the total Hilbert space and is related to the parity symmetry. We show that in the strongly interacting limit this selection rule has implications on the entire Hilbert space. We discuss its signatures on the system's dynamics and consider how it can be observed experimentally with ultracold atoms.

A coherent superposition of Feshbach dimers and Efimov trimers

A powerful experimental technique to study Efimov physics at positive scattering lengths is demonstrated. We use the Feshbach dimers as a local reference for Efimov trimers by creating a coherent superposition of both states. Measurement of its coherent evolution provides information on the binding energy of the trimers with unprecedented precision and yields access to previously inaccessible parameters of the system such as the Efimov trimers' lifetime and the elastic processes between atoms and the constituents of the superposition state. We develop a comprehensive data analysis suitable for noisy experimental data that confirms the trustworthiness of our demonstration.

Laser Cooling at Resonance

We show experimentally that 3-D laser cooling of lithium atoms is achieved when the laser light is tuned exactly to resonance with the atomic transition. For a theoretical description of this surprising phenomenon we resolve to a full model which takes into account both the entire atomic structure and the laser light polarization. Here we build such a model for $^7$Li atoms cooled on the $D_{2}$-line in a $σ^+-σ^-$ laser configuration. We take all 24 Zeeman sub-levels into account and obtain good agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, by means of Monte-Carlo simulations we show that coherent processes play an important role in showing consistency between the theory and the experimental results.

Universal Loss Dynamics in a Unitary Bose Gas

The low temperature unitary Bose gas is a fundamental paradigm in few-body and many-body physics, attracting wide theoretical and experimental interest. Here we first present a theoretical model that describes the dynamic competition between two-body evaporation and three-body re-combination in a harmonically trapped unitary atomic gas above the condensation temperature. We identify a universal magic trap depth where, within some parameter range, evaporative cooling is balanced by recombination heating and the gas temperature stays constant. Our model is developed for the usual three-dimensional evaporation regime as well as the 2D evaporation case. Experiments performed with unitary 133 Cs and 7 Li atoms fully support our predictions and enable quantitative measurements of the 3-body recombination rate in the low temperature domain. In particular, we measure for the first time the Efimov inelasticity parameter $η$ * = 0.098(7) for the 47.8-G d-wave Feshbach resonance in 133 Cs. Combined 133 Cs and 7 Li experimental data allow investigations of loss dynamics over two orders of magnitude in temperature and four orders of magnitude in three-body loss. We confirm the 1/T 2 temperature universality law up to the constant $η$ *.

Simultaneous sub-Doppler laser cooling of fermionic $^6$Li and $^{40}$K on the D$_1$ line: Theory and Experiment

We report on simultaneous sub-Doppler laser cooling of fermionic $^6$Li and $^{40}$K using the D$_1$ optical transitions. We compare experimental results to a numerical simulation of the cooling process applying a semi-classical Monte Carlo wavefunction method. The simulation takes into account the three dimensional optical molasses setup and the dipole interaction between atoms and the bichromatic light field driving the D$_1$ transitions. We discuss the physical mechanisms at play, we identify the important role of coherences between the ground state hyperfine levels and compare D$_1$ and D$_2$ sub-Doppler cooling. In 5 ms, the D$_1$ molasses phase largely reduces the temperature for both $^6$Li and $^{40}$K at the same time, with a final temperature of 44 $μ$K and 11 $μ$K, respectively. For both species this leads to a phase-space density close to $10^{-4}$. These conditions are well suited to directly load an optical or magnetic trap for efficient evaporative cooling to quantum degeneracy.

Three-body recombination at vanishing scattering lengths in an ultracold Bose gas

We report on measurements of three-body recombination rates in an ultracold gas of $^7$Li atoms in the extremely nonuniversal regime where the two-body scattering length vanishes. We show that the rate is well defined and can be described by two-body parameters only: the scattering length $a$ and the effective range $R_e$. We find the rate to be energy independent, and, by connecting our results with previously reported measurements in the universal limit, we cover the behavior of the three-body recombination in the whole range from weak to strong two-body interactions. We identify a nontrivial magnetic field value in the nonuniversal regime where the rate should be strongly reduced.

Generating mesoscopic Bell states via collisions of distinguishable quantum bright solitons

We investigate numerically the collisions of two distinguishable quantum matter-wave bright solitons in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. We show that such collisions can be used to generate mesoscopic Bell states which can reliably be distinguished from statistical mixtures. Calculation of the relevant s-wave scattering lengths predicts that such states could potentially be realized in quantum-degenerate mixtures of 85Rb and 133Cs. In addition to fully quantum simulations for two distinguishable two-particle solitons, we use a mean-field description supplemented by a stochastic treatment of quantum fluctuations in the soliton's center of mass: We demonstrate the validity of this approach by comparison to a mathematically rigorous effective potential treatment of the quantum many-particle problem.

Λ-enhanced Sub-Doppler Cooling of Lithium Atoms in D1 Gray Molasses

Following the bichromatic sub-Doppler cooling scheme on the D1 line of 40K recently demonstrated in (Fernandes et al. 2012), we introduce a similar technique for 7Li atoms and obtain temperatures of 60 uK while capturing all of the 5x10^8 atoms present from the previous stage. We investigate the influence of the detuning between the the two cooling frequencies and observe a threefold decrease of the temperature when the Raman condition is fulfilled. We interpret this effect as arising from extra cooling due to long-lived coherences between hyperfine states. Solving the optical Bloch equations for a simplified, Λ-type three-level system we identify the presence of an efficient cooling force near the Raman condition. After transfer into a quadrupole magnetic trap, we measure a phase space density of ~10^-5. This laser cooling offers a promising route for fast evaporation of lithium atoms to quantum degeneracy in optical or magnetic traps.

Scattering bright solitons: quantum versus mean-field behavior

We investigate scattering bright solitons off a potential using both analytical and numerical methods. Our paper focuses on low kinetic energies for which differences between the mean-field description via the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and the quantum behavior are particularly large. On the N-particle quantum level, adding an additional harmonic confinement leads to a simple signature to distinguish quantum superpositions from statistical mixtures. While the non-linear character of the GPE does not allow quantum superpositions, the splitting of GPE-solitons takes place only partially. When the potential strength is increased, the fraction of the soliton which is transmitted or reflected jumps non-continuously. We explain these jumps via energy-conservation and interpret them as indications for quantum superpositions on the N-particle level. On the GPE-level, we also investigate the transition from this stepwise behavior to the continuous case.

Nuclear-spin-independent short-range three-body physics in ultracold atoms

We investigate three-body recombination loss across a Feshbach resonance in a gas of ultracold 7Li atoms prepared in the absolute ground state and perform a comparison with previously reported results of a different nuclear-spin state [N. Gross et.al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103 163202, (2009)]. We extend the previously reported universality in three-body recombination loss across a Feshbach resonance to the absolute ground state. We show that the positions and widths of recombination minima and Efimov resonances are identical for both states which indicates that the short-range physics is nuclear-spin independent.

Association of Efimov trimers from a three-atom continuum

We develop an experimental technique for rf-association of Efimov trimers from three-atoms continuum. We apply it to probe the lowest accessible Efimov energy level in bosonic lithium in the region where strong deviations from the universal behavior are expected, and provide quantitative study of this effect. Position of the Efimov resonance at the atom-dimer threshold, measured with a different experimental technique, concurs with the rf-association results.

Universal Dimer in a Collisionally Opaque Medium: Experimental Observables and Efimov Resonances

A universal dimer is subject to secondary collisions with atoms when formed in a cloud of ultracold atoms via three-body recombination. We show that in a collisionally opaque medium, the value of the scattering length that results in the maximum number of secondary collisions may not correspond to the Efimov resonance at the atom-dimer threshold and thus can not be automatically associated with it. This result explains a number of controversies in recent experimental results on universal three-body states and supports the emerging evidence for the significant finite range corrections to the first excited Efimov energy level.
