Open-Source AI-based SE Tools: Opportunities and Challenges of Collaborative Software Learning

Large Language Models (LLMs) have become instrumental in advancing software engineering (SE) tasks, showcasing their efficacy in code understanding and beyond. Like traditional SE tools, open-source collaboration is key in realising the excellent products. However, with AI models, the essential need is in data. The collaboration of these AI-based SE models hinges on maximising the sources of high-quality data. However, data especially of high quality, often holds commercial or sensitive value, making it less accessible for open-source AI-based SE projects. This reality presents a significant barrier to the development and enhancement of AI-based SE tools within the software engineering community. Therefore, researchers need to find solutions for enabling open-source AI-based SE models to tap into resources by different organisations. Addressing this challenge, our position paper investigates one solution to facilitate access to diverse organizational resources for open-source AI models, ensuring privacy and commercial sensitivities are respected. We introduce a governance framework centered on federated learning (FL), designed to foster the joint development and maintenance of open-source AI code models while safeguarding data privacy and security. Additionally, we present guidelines for developers on AI-based SE tool collaboration, covering data requirements, model architecture, updating strategies, and version control. Given the significant influence of data characteristics on FL, our research examines the effect of code data heterogeneity on FL performance.

Accelerating the Delivery of Data Services over Uncertain Mobile Crowdsensing Networks

The challenge of exchanging and processing of big data over mobile crowdsensing (MCS) networks calls for designing seamless data service provisioning mechanisms to enable utilization of resources of mobile devices/users for crowdsensing tasks. Although conventional onsite spot trading of resources based on real-time network conditions can facilitate data sharing, it often suffers from prohibitively long service provisioning delays and unavoidable trading failures due to requiring timely analysis of dynamic network environment. These limitations motivate us to investigate an integrated forward and spot trading mechanism (iFAST), which entails a novel hybrid data trading protocol with time efficiency, over uncertain MCS ecosystems. In iFAST, the sellers (i.e., mobile devices who can contribute data) can provide long-term or temporary sensing services to the buyers (i.e., sensing tasks). Specifically, it enables signing long-term contracts in advance of future transactions through a forward trading mode, via analyzing historical statistics of the network/market, for which the notion of overbooking is introduced and promoted. iFAST further encourages the buyers with unsatisfying service quality to recruit temporary sellers through a spot trading mode, considering the current network/market conditions. We analyze the fundamental blocks of iFAST and provide a case study to demonstrate its performance. Inspirations for future research directions of next-generation sensing and communication are summarized.

Enlarging Stability Region of Urban Networks with Imminent Supply Prediction

Stability region is a key index to characterize a dynamic processing system's ability to handle incoming demands. It is a multidimensional space when the system has multiple OD pairs where their service rates interact. Urban traffic network is such a system. Traffic congestion appears when its demand approaches or exceeds the upper frontier of its stability region. In this decade, with the rapid development of traffic sense technology, real-time traffic operations, e.g., BackPressure (BP) control, have gained lots of research attention. Urban network's mobility could be further improved with these timely demand-responding strategies. However, most studies on real-time controls continue with traditional supply assumptions and ignore an important fact -- imminent saturation flow rate (I-SFR), i.e., the system's real-time service rate under green, is neither fixed nor given, but hard to be precisely known. It is unknown how the knowledge level of I-SFR would influence the stability region. This paper proves that knowing more accurate I-SFR can enlarge the upper frontier of the network's stability region. Furthermore, BP policy with predicted I-SFR can stabilize the network within the enlarged stability region and relieve the congestion level of the traffic network. Therefore, improving the I-SFR's prediction accuracy is meaningful for traffic operations.

Mechanical stability of homogeneous holographic solids under finite shear strain

We study the linear stability of holographic homogeneous solids (HHS) at finite temperature and in presence of a background shear strain by means of a large scale quasi-normal mode analysis which extends beyond the hydrodynamic limit. We find that mechanical instability can arise either as a result of a complex speed of sound -- gradient instability -- or of a negative diffusion constant. Surprisingly, the simplest HHS models are linearly stable for arbitrarily large values of the background strain. For more complex HHS, the onset of the diffusive instability always precedes that of the gradient instability, which becomes the dominant destabilizing process only above a critical value of the background shear strain. Finally, we observe that the critical strains for the two instabilities approach each other at low temperatures. We conclude by presenting a phase diagram for HHS as a function of temperature and background shear strain which shows interesting similarities with the physics of superfluids in presence of background superfluid velocity.

Model-less Is the Best Model: Generating Pure Code Implementations to Replace On-Device DL Models

Recent studies show that deployed deep learning (DL) models such as those of Tensor Flow Lite (TFLite) can be easily extracted from real-world applications and devices by attackers to generate many kinds of attacks like adversarial attacks. Although securing deployed on-device DL models has gained increasing attention, no existing methods can fully prevent the aforementioned threats. Traditional software protection techniques have been widely explored, if on-device models can be implemented using pure code, such as C++, it will open the possibility of reusing existing software protection techniques. However, due to the complexity of DL models, there is no automatic method that can translate the DL models to pure code. To fill this gap, we propose a novel method, CustomDLCoder, to automatically extract the on-device model information and synthesize a customized executable program for a wide range of DL models. CustomDLCoder first parses the DL model, extracts its backend computing units, configures the computing units to a graph, and then generates customized code to implement and deploy the ML solution without explicit model representation. The synthesized program hides model information for DL deployment environments since it does not need to retain explicit model representation, preventing many attacks on the DL model. In addition, it improves ML performance because the customized code removes model parsing and preprocessing steps and only retains the data computing process. Our experimental results show that CustomDLCoder improves model security by disabling on-device model sniffing. Compared with the original on-device platform (i.e., TFLite), our method can accelerate model inference by 21.8% and 24.3% on x86-64 and ARM64 platforms, respectively. Most importantly, it can significantly reduce memory consumption by 68.8% and 36.0% on x86-64 and ARM64 platforms, respectively.

Life-long Learning and Testing for Automated Vehicles via Adaptive Scenario Sampling as A Continuous Optimization Process

Sampling critical testing scenarios is an essential step in intelligence testing for Automated Vehicles (AVs). However, due to the lack of prior knowledge on the distribution of critical scenarios in sampling space, we can hardly efficiently find the critical scenarios or accurately evaluate the intelligence of AVs. To solve this problem, we formulate the testing as a continuous optimization process which iteratively generates potential critical scenarios and meanwhile evaluates these scenarios. A bi-level loop is proposed for such life-long learning and testing. In the outer loop, we iteratively learn space knowledge by evaluating AV in the already sampled scenarios and then sample new scenarios based on the retained knowledge. Outer loop stops when all generated samples cover the whole space. While to maximize the coverage of the space in each outer loop, we set an inner loop which receives newly generated samples in outer loop and outputs the updated positions of these samples. We assume that points in a small sphere-like subspace can be covered (or represented) by the point in the center of this sphere. Therefore, we can apply a multi-rounds heuristic strategy to move and pack these spheres in space to find the best covering solution. The simulation results show that faster and more accurate evaluation of AVs can be achieved with more critical scenarios.

Instance-aware Exploration-Verification-Exploitation for Instance ImageGoal Navigation

As a new embodied vision task, Instance ImageGoal Navigation (IIN) aims to navigate to a specified object depicted by a goal image in an unexplored environment. The main challenge of this task lies in identifying the target object from different viewpoints while rejecting similar distractors. Existing ImageGoal Navigation methods usually adopt the simple Exploration-Exploitation framework and ignore the identification of specific instance during navigation. In this work, we propose to imitate the human behaviour of ``getting closer to confirm" when distinguishing objects from a distance. Specifically, we design a new modular navigation framework named Instance-aware Exploration-Verification-Exploitation (IEVE) for instance-level image goal navigation. Our method allows for active switching among the exploration, verification, and exploitation actions, thereby facilitating the agent in making reasonable decisions under different situations. On the challenging HabitatMatterport 3D semantic (HM3D-SEM) dataset, our method surpasses previous state-of-the-art work, with a classical segmentation model (0.684 vs. 0.561 success) or a robust model (0.702 vs. 0.561 success)

UV- and X-ray-activated broadband NIR garnet-type Ca3Ga2Sn3O12:Fe3+ phosphors with efficient persistent luminescence

Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) are compact light sources of great interest for NIR spectroscopy applications. Beyond typical Cr3+-activated NIR-emitting phosphors, there exists a strong demand for Cr3+-free alternatives with high efficiency and broadband emission to rich the landscape of NIR luminescent materials and extend their range of application fields. Here, we report a series of Fe3+-activated Ca3Ga2Sn3O12 garnet-type phosphors exhibiting broadband NIR emission in the 650-1000 nm range attributed to 4T1(G)-->6A1(S) transition, with a maximum at 754 nm and a FWHM of 89 nm upon UV excitation. The spectroscopic results were analyzed according to the Tanabe-Sugano theory from which the crystal field parameter Dq and Racah parameters B and C were obtained for the octahedrally coordinated Fe3+ ion. Notably, the NIR persistent luminescence lasting over 1 h was detected following UV or X-ray irradiation. The possible mechanism involving electron traps was proposed to explain the observed persistent luminescence. Furthermore, a NIR pc-LED was fabricated by coating synthesized phosphor on a UV chip, and its performance was evaluated to assess its potential suitability as a NIR light source. Our discovery of novel type of nontoxic Fe3+-activated broadband NIR luminescence phosphors with efficient NIR persistent luminescence paves the way for discovering Cr3+-free multifunctional NIR luminescence materials, thereby expanding their application possibilities.

Luminescence properties and phase transformation of broadband NIR emitting A2(WO4)3:Cr3+ (A=Al3+, Sc3+) phosphors toward NIR spectroscopy applications

The synthesis, structural, and luminescence properties have been carried out for Cr3+-activated Al2(WO4)3 (AWO) and Sc2(WO4)3 (SWO) phosphors for application in pc-NIR LED. Upon blue excitation, these compounds are capable of exhibiting broadband NIR emission stems primarily from 4T2-->4A2 transition in the range of 670-1200 nm (maxima ~808 nm, FWHM ~140 nm) for AWO:Cr and of 700-1300 nm (maxima ~870 nm, FWHM ~164 nm) for SWO:Cr. The significant shift of NIR emission is attributed to the substitution of AlO6 with larger ScO6 octahedrons. To gain insight into the luminescence the crystal field strength, Racah parameters, nephelauxetic effect, and electron-phonon coupling have been analyzed based on spectroscopic results. The electron-phonon coupling parameter S for SWO:Cr was determined to be 11.5, twice as large as that for AWO:Cr, which is in accordance with its strong thermal quenching. The abrupt changes occurring at 275 K in temperature-dependent luminescence spectra and decay lifetime of AWO:Cr is associated with temperature-driven phase transformation from low-temperature monoclinic to high-temperature orthorhombic phase. Pressure induced amorphization of AWO:Cr at pressures higher than 25 kbar was confirmed by employing high pressure evolution of Raman spectra. A high-power NIR pc-LED, fabricated by coating AWO:0.04Cr on a commercial 470 nm LED chip, shows good performance with an output power of 17.1 mW driven by a current of 320 mA, revealing potential application of studied materials for NIR light source.

Motion-aware 3D Gaussian Splatting for Efficient Dynamic Scene Reconstruction

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has become an emerging tool for dynamic scene reconstruction. However, existing methods focus mainly on extending static 3DGS into a time-variant representation, while overlooking the rich motion information carried by 2D observations, thus suffering from performance degradation and model redundancy. To address the above problem, we propose a novel motion-aware enhancement framework for dynamic scene reconstruction, which mines useful motion cues from optical flow to improve different paradigms of dynamic 3DGS. Specifically, we first establish a correspondence between 3D Gaussian movements and pixel-level flow. Then a novel flow augmentation method is introduced with additional insights into uncertainty and loss collaboration. Moreover, for the prevalent deformation-based paradigm that presents a harder optimization problem, a transient-aware deformation auxiliary module is proposed. We conduct extensive experiments on both multi-view and monocular scenes to verify the merits of our work. Compared with the baselines, our method shows significant superiority in both rendering quality and efficiency.

Towards Personalized Evaluation of Large Language Models with An Anonymous Crowd-Sourcing Platform

Large language model evaluation plays a pivotal role in the enhancement of its capacity. Previously, numerous methods for evaluating large language models have been proposed in this area. Despite their effectiveness, these existing works mainly focus on assessing objective questions, overlooking the capability to evaluate subjective questions which is extremely common for large language models. Additionally, these methods predominantly utilize centralized datasets for evaluation, with question banks concentrated within the evaluation platforms themselves. Moreover, the evaluation processes employed by these platforms often overlook personalized factors, neglecting to consider the individual characteristics of both the evaluators and the models being evaluated. To address these limitations, we propose a novel anonymous crowd-sourcing evaluation platform, BingJian, for large language models that employs a competitive scoring mechanism where users participate in ranking models based on their performance. This platform stands out not only for its support of centralized evaluations to assess the general capabilities of models but also for offering an open evaluation gateway. Through this gateway, users have the opportunity to submit their questions, testing the models on a personalized and potentially broader range of capabilities. Furthermore, our platform introduces personalized evaluation scenarios, leveraging various forms of human-computer interaction to assess large language models in a manner that accounts for individual user preferences and contexts. The demonstration of BingJian can be accessed at https://github.com/Mingyue-Cheng/Bingjian.

Wavelet-Like Transform-Based Technology in Response to the Call for Proposals on Neural Network-Based Image Coding

Neural network-based image coding has been developing rapidly since its birth. Until 2022, its performance has surpassed that of the best-performing traditional image coding framework -- H.266/VVC. Witnessing such success, the IEEE 1857.11 working subgroup initializes a neural network-based image coding standard project and issues a corresponding call for proposals (CfP). In response to the CfP, this paper introduces a novel wavelet-like transform-based end-to-end image coding framework -- iWaveV3. iWaveV3 incorporates many new features such as affine wavelet-like transform, perceptual-friendly quality metric, and more advanced training and online optimization strategies into our previous wavelet-like transform-based framework iWave++. While preserving the features of supporting lossy and lossless compression simultaneously, iWaveV3 also achieves state-of-the-art compression efficiency for objective quality and is very competitive for perceptual quality. As a result, iWaveV3 is adopted as a candidate scheme for developing the IEEE Standard for neural-network-based image coding.

DLP-GAN: learning to draw modern Chinese landscape photos with generative adversarial network

Chinese landscape painting has a unique and artistic style, and its drawing technique is highly abstract in both the use of color and the realistic representation of objects. Previous methods focus on transferring from modern photos to ancient ink paintings. However, little attention has been paid to translating landscape paintings into modern photos. To solve such problems, in this paper, we (1) propose DLP-GAN (Draw Modern Chinese Landscape Photos with Generative Adversarial Network), an unsupervised cross-domain image translation framework with a novel asymmetric cycle mapping, and (2) introduce a generator based on a dense-fusion module to match different translation directions. Moreover, a dual-consistency loss is proposed to balance the realism and abstraction of model painting. In this way, our model can draw landscape photos and sketches in the modern sense. Finally, based on our collection of modern landscape and sketch datasets, we compare the images generated by our model with other benchmarks. Extensive experiments including user studies show that our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Continuously and widely tunable frequency-stabilized laser based on an optical frequency comb

Continuously and widely tunable lasers actively stabilized on a frequency reference are broadly employed in atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics. The frequency-stabilized optical frequency comb (OFC) provides a novel optical frequency reference with a broadband spectrum that meets the requirement of laser frequency stabilization. Therefore, we demonstrate a frequency-stabilized and precisely tunable laser system based on it. In this scheme, the laser frequency locked to the OFC is driven to jump over the ambiguity zones, which blocks the wide tuning of the locked laser, and tuned until the mode hopping happens with the always-activated feedback loop. Meanwhile, we compensate the gap of the frequency jump with a synchronized acoustic optical modulator to ensure the continuity. This scheme is applied to an external cavity diode laser (ECDL) and we achieve tuning at a rate of about 7 GHz/s with some readily available commercial electronics. Furthermore, we tune the frequency-stabilized laser only with the feedback of diode current and its average tuning speed can exceed 100 GHz/s. Due to the resource-efficient configuration and the simplicity of completion, this scheme can be referenced and find wide applications in AMO experiments.

Investigating White-Box Attacks for On-Device Models

Numerous mobile apps have leveraged deep learning capabilities. However, on-device models are vulnerable to attacks as they can be easily extracted from their corresponding mobile apps. Existing on-device attacking approaches only generate black-box attacks, which are far less effective and efficient than white-box strategies. This is because mobile deep learning frameworks like TFLite do not support gradient computing, which is necessary for white-box attacking algorithms. Thus, we argue that existing findings may underestimate the harmfulness of on-device attacks. To this end, we conduct a study to answer this research question: Can on-device models be directly attacked via white-box strategies? We first systematically analyze the difficulties of transforming the on-device model to its debuggable version, and propose a Reverse Engineering framework for On-device Models (REOM), which automatically reverses the compiled on-device TFLite model to the debuggable model. Specifically, REOM first transforms compiled on-device models into Open Neural Network Exchange format, then removes the non-debuggable parts, and converts them to the debuggable DL models format that allows attackers to exploit in a white-box setting. Our experimental results show that our approach is effective in achieving automated transformation among 244 TFLite models. Compared with previous attacks using surrogate models, REOM enables attackers to achieve higher attack success rates with a hundred times smaller attack perturbations. In addition, because the ONNX platform has plenty of tools for model format exchanging, the proposed method based on the ONNX platform can be adapted to other model formats. Our findings emphasize the need for developers to carefully consider their model deployment strategies, and use white-box methods to evaluate the vulnerability of on-device models.

ModelObfuscator: Obfuscating Model Information to Protect Deployed ML-based Systems

More and more edge devices and mobile apps are leveraging deep learning (DL) capabilities. Deploying such models on devices -- referred to as on-device models -- rather than as remote cloud-hosted services, has gained popularity because it avoids transmitting user data off of the device and achieves high response time. However, on-device models can be easily attacked, as they can be accessed by unpacking corresponding apps and the model is fully exposed to attackers. Recent studies show that attackers can easily generate white-box-like attacks for an on-device model or even inverse its training data. To protect on-device models from white-box attacks, we propose a novel technique called model obfuscation. Specifically, model obfuscation hides and obfuscates the key information -- structure, parameters and attributes -- of models by renaming, parameter encapsulation, neural structure obfuscation obfuscation, shortcut injection, and extra layer injection. We have developed a prototype tool ModelObfuscator to automatically obfuscate on-device TFLite models. Our experiments show that this proposed approach can dramatically improve model security by significantly increasing the difficulty of parsing models inner information, without increasing the latency of DL models. Our proposed on-device model obfuscation has the potential to be a fundamental technique for on-device model deployment. Our prototype tool is publicly available at: https://github.com/zhoumingyi/ModelObfuscator.

Towards classifying the interior dynamics of charged black holes with scalar hair

The study of the interior of hairy black holes has received significant attention recently. This paper builds upon our recent analytical approach to investigate the internal dynamics of charged black holes with scalar hair in general spacetime dimensions. The geometries of these hairy balck holes end at a spacelike singularity. We investigate the alternation of Kasner epoch at later interior times and obtain the analytic expression for two kinds of transformation, namely Kasner inversion and Kasner transition. Moreover, we classify three different types of Kasner alternations for a large class of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory. Our analytical results are corroborated by numerical solutions to the full equations of motion, including a top-down model from supergravity. For general interactions, more complicated behaviors beyond our analytical description are also found and discussed, including the presence of non-Kasner epochs and the random change of the amplitude of the Kasner exponent at late interior times.

Photoassociation of multiple cold molecules in a dipole trap

The generation of cold molecules is a core topic in the field of cold atoms and molecules, which has advanced relevant research like ultracold chemistry, quantum computation, and quantum metrology. With high atomic phase space density, optical dipole trap has been widely performed to prepare and trap cold molecules, and can also be further developed for multiple cold molecule formation and dynamics study. In this work, Rb2 molecules are photoassociated in the magneto-optical trap to obtain precise rovibrational spectroscopy, which provides accurate numerical references for multiple photoassociations. By achieving the harsh requirements of photoassociation in the optical dipole trap, the cold molecule photoassociation process is well explored, and different rovibrational cold molecules are formed in the optical dipole trap for the first time. This method can be universally extended to simultaneously photoassociate various molecules with different internal states or atomic species in just one optical dipole trap, and then advance generous cold molecule research such as cold molecule collision dynamics.
