Robust Multidimentional Chinese Remainder Theorem for Integer Vector Reconstruction

The problem of robustly reconstructing an integer vector from its erroneous remainders appears in many applications in the field of multidimensional (MD) signal processing. To address this problem, a robust MD Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) was recently proposed for a special class of moduli, where the remaining integer matrices left-divided by a greatest common left divisor (gcld) of all the moduli are pairwise commutative and coprime. The strict constraint on the moduli limits the usefulness of the robust MD-CRT in practice. In this paper, we investigate the robust MD-CRT for a general set of moduli. We first introduce a necessary and sufficient condition on the difference between paired remainder errors, followed by a simple sufficient condition on the remainder error bound, for the robust MD-CRT for general moduli, where the conditions are associated with (the minimum distances of) these lattices generated by gcld's of paired moduli, and a closed-form reconstruction algorithm is presented. We then generalize the above results of the robust MD-CRT from integer vectors/matrices to real ones. Finally, we validate the robust MD-CRT for general moduli by employing numerical simulations, and apply it to MD sinusoidal frequency estimation based on multiple sub-Nyquist samplers.

i-Razor: A Differentiable Neural Input Razor for Feature Selection and Dimension Search in DNN-Based Recommender Systems

Input features play a crucial role in DNN-based recommender systems with thousands of categorical and continuous fields from users, items, contexts, and interactions. Noisy features and inappropriate embedding dimension assignments can deteriorate the performance of recommender systems and introduce unnecessary complexity in model training and online serving. Optimizing the input configuration of DNN models, including feature selection and embedding dimension assignment, has become one of the essential topics in feature engineering. However, in existing industrial practices, feature selection and dimension search are optimized sequentially, i.e., feature selection is performed first, followed by dimension search to determine the optimal dimension size for each selected feature. Such a sequential optimization mechanism increases training costs and risks generating suboptimal input configurations. To address this problem, we propose a differentiable neural input razor (i-Razor) that enables joint optimization of feature selection and dimension search. Concretely, we introduce an end-to-end differentiable model to learn the relative importance of different embedding regions of each feature. Furthermore, a flexible pruning algorithm is proposed to achieve feature filtering and dimension derivation simultaneously. Extensive experiments on two large-scale public datasets in the Click-Through-Rate (CTR) prediction task demonstrate the efficacy and superiority of i-Razor in balancing model complexity and performance.

CDR-Adapter: Learning Adapters to Dig Out More Transferring Ability for Cross-Domain Recommendation Models

Data sparsity and cold-start problems are persistent challenges in recommendation systems. Cross-domain recommendation (CDR) is a promising solution that utilizes knowledge from the source domain to improve the recommendation performance in the target domain. Previous CDR approaches have mainly followed the Embedding and Mapping (EMCDR) framework, which involves learning a mapping function to facilitate knowledge transfer. However, these approaches necessitate re-engineering and re-training the network structure to incorporate transferrable knowledge, which can be computationally expensive and may result in catastrophic forgetting of the original knowledge. In this paper, we present a scalable and efficient paradigm to address data sparsity and cold-start issues in CDR, named CDR-Adapter, by decoupling the original recommendation model from the mapping function, without requiring re-engineering the network structure. Specifically, CDR-Adapter is a novel plug-and-play module that employs adapter modules to align feature representations, allowing for flexible knowledge transfer across different domains and efficient fine-tuning with minimal training costs. We conducted extensive experiments on the benchmark dataset, which demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach over several state-of-the-art CDR approaches.

PhantomSound: Black-Box, Query-Efficient Audio Adversarial Attack via Split-Second Phoneme Injection

In this paper, we propose PhantomSound, a query-efficient black-box attack toward voice assistants. Existing black-box adversarial attacks on voice assistants either apply substitution models or leverage the intermediate model output to estimate the gradients for crafting adversarial audio samples. However, these attack approaches require a significant amount of queries with a lengthy training stage. PhantomSound leverages the decision-based attack to produce effective adversarial audios, and reduces the number of queries by optimizing the gradient estimation. In the experiments, we perform our attack against 4 different speech-to-text APIs under 3 real-world scenarios to demonstrate the real-time attack impact. The results show that PhantomSound is practical and robust in attacking 5 popular commercial voice controllable devices over the air, and is able to bypass 3 liveness detection mechanisms with >95% success rate. The benchmark result shows that PhantomSound can generate adversarial examples and launch the attack in a few minutes. We significantly enhance the query efficiency and reduce the cost of a successful untargeted and targeted adversarial attack by 93.1% and 65.5% compared with the state-of-the-art black-box attacks, using merely ~300 queries (~5 minutes) and ~1,500 queries (~25 minutes), respectively.

MASTERKEY: Practical Backdoor Attack Against Speaker Verification Systems

Speaker Verification (SV) is widely deployed in mobile systems to authenticate legitimate users by using their voice traits. In this work, we propose a backdoor attack MASTERKEY, to compromise the SV models. Different from previous attacks, we focus on a real-world practical setting where the attacker possesses no knowledge of the intended victim. To design MASTERKEY, we investigate the limitation of existing poisoning attacks against unseen targets. Then, we optimize a universal backdoor that is capable of attacking arbitrary targets. Next, we embed the speaker's characteristics and semantics information into the backdoor, making it imperceptible. Finally, we estimate the channel distortion and integrate it into the backdoor. We validate our attack on 6 popular SV models. Specifically, we poison a total of 53 models and use our trigger to attack 16,430 enrolled speakers, composed of 310 target speakers enrolled in 53 poisoned models. Our attack achieves 100% attack success rate with a 15% poison rate. By decreasing the poison rate to 3%, the attack success rate remains around 50%. We validate our attack in 3 real-world scenarios and successfully demonstrate the attack through both over-the-air and over-the-telephony-line scenarios.

CQNV: A combination of coarsely quantized bitstream and neural vocoder for low rate speech coding

Recently, speech codecs based on neural networks have proven to perform better than traditional methods. However, redundancy in traditional parameter quantization is visible within the codec architecture of combining the traditional codec with the neural vocoder. In this paper, we propose a novel framework named CQNV, which combines the coarsely quantized parameters of a traditional parametric codec to reduce the bitrate with a neural vocoder to improve the quality of the decoded speech. Furthermore, we introduce a parameters processing module into the neural vocoder to enhance the application of the bitstream of traditional speech coding parameters to the neural vocoder, further improving the reconstructed speech's quality. In the experiments, both subjective and objective evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed CQNV framework. Specifically, our proposed method can achieve higher quality reconstructed speech at 1.1 kbps than Lyra and Encodec at 3 kbps.

A Snoring Sound Dataset for Body Position Recognition: Collection, Annotation, and Analysis

Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS) is a chronic breathing disorder caused by a blockage in the upper airways. Snoring is a prominent symptom of OSAHS, and previous studies have attempted to identify the obstruction site of the upper airways by snoring sounds. Despite some progress, the classification of the obstruction site remains challenging in real-world clinical settings due to the influence of sleep body position on upper airways. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a snore-based sleep body position recognition dataset (SSBPR) consisting of 7570 snoring recordings, which comprises six distinct labels for sleep body position: supine, supine but left lateral head, supine but right lateral head, left-side lying, right-side lying and prone. Experimental results show that snoring sounds exhibit certain acoustic features that enable their effective utilization for identifying body posture during sleep in real-world scenarios.

FAST polarization mapping of the SNR VRO 42.05.01

We have obtained the polarization data cube of the VRO 42.05.01 supernova remnant at 1240 MHz using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Three-dimensional Faraday Synthesis is applied to the FAST data to derive the Faraday depth spectrum. The peak Faraday depth map shows a large area of enhanced foreground RM of ~60 rad m-2 extending along the remnant's "wing" section, which coincides with a large-scale HI shell at -20 km/s. The two depolarization patches within the "wing" region with RM of 97 rad m-2 and 55 rad m-2 coincide with two HI structures in the HI shell. Faraday screen model fitting on the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) 1420 MHz full-scale polarization data reveals a distance of 0.7-0.8d_{SNR} in front of the SNR with enhanced regular magnetic field there. The highly piled-up magnetic field indicates that the HI shell at -20 km/s could originate from an old evolved SNR.

BEVStereo++: Accurate Depth Estimation in Multi-view 3D Object Detection via Dynamic Temporal Stereo

Bounded by the inherent ambiguity of depth perception, contemporary multi-view 3D object detection methods fall into the performance bottleneck. Intuitively, leveraging temporal multi-view stereo (MVS) technology is the natural knowledge for tackling this ambiguity. However, traditional attempts of MVS has two limitations when applying to 3D object detection scenes: 1) The affinity measurement among all views suffers expensive computational cost; 2) It is difficult to deal with outdoor scenarios where objects are often mobile. To this end, we propose BEVStereo++: by introducing a dynamic temporal stereo strategy, BEVStereo++ is able to cut down the harm that is brought by introducing temporal stereo when dealing with those two scenarios. Going one step further, we apply Motion Compensation Module and long sequence Frame Fusion to BEVStereo++, which shows further performance boosting and error reduction. Without bells and whistles, BEVStereo++ achieves state-of-the-art(SOTA) on both Waymo and nuScenes dataset.

DeltaNet:Conditional Medical Report Generation for COVID-19 Diagnosis

Fast screening and diagnosis are critical in COVID-19 patient treatment. In addition to the gold standard RT-PCR, radiological imaging like X-ray and CT also works as an important means in patient screening and follow-up. However, due to the excessive number of patients, writing reports becomes a heavy burden for radiologists. To reduce the workload of radiologists, we propose DeltaNet to generate medical reports automatically. Different from typical image captioning approaches that generate reports with an encoder and a decoder, DeltaNet applies a conditional generation process. In particular, given a medical image, DeltaNet employs three steps to generate a report: 1) first retrieving related medical reports, i.e., the historical reports from the same or similar patients; 2) then comparing retrieved images and current image to find the differences; 3) finally generating a new report to accommodate identified differences based on the conditional report. We evaluate DeltaNet on a COVID-19 dataset, where DeltaNet outperforms state-of-the-art approaches. Besides COVID-19, the proposed DeltaNet can be applied to other diseases as well. We validate its generalization capabilities on the public IU-Xray and MIMIC-CXR datasets for chest-related diseases. Code is available at \url{https://github.com/LX-doctorAI1/DeltaNet}.

Knowledge Matters: Radiology Report Generation with General and Specific Knowledge

Automatic radiology report generation is critical in clinics which can relieve experienced radiologists from the heavy workload and remind inexperienced radiologists of misdiagnosis or missed diagnose. Existing approaches mainly formulate radiology report generation as an image captioning task and adopt the encoder-decoder framework. However, in the medical domain, such pure data-driven approaches suffer from the following problems: 1) visual and textual bias problem; 2) lack of expert knowledge. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-enhanced radiology report generation approach introduces two types of medical knowledge: 1) General knowledge, which is input independent and provides the broad knowledge for report generation; 2) Specific knowledge, which is input dependent and provides the fine-grained knowledge for report generation. To fully utilize both the general and specific knowledge, we also propose a knowledge-enhanced multi-head attention mechanism. By merging the visual features of the radiology image with general knowledge and specific knowledge, the proposed model can improve the quality of generated reports. Experimental results on two publicly available datasets IU-Xray and MIMIC-CXR show that the proposed knowledge enhanced approach outperforms state-of-the-art image captioning based methods. Ablation studies also demonstrate that both general and specific knowledge can help to improve the performance of radiology report generation.

Energy-grade double pricing mechanism for a combined heat and power system using the asynchronous dispatch method

The problem of heat and electricity pricing in combined heat and power systems regarding the time scales of electricity and heat, as well as thermal energy quality, is studied. Based on the asynchronous coordinated dispatch of the combined heat and power system, an energy-grade double pricing mechanism is proposed. Under the pricing mechanism, the resulting merchandise surplus of the heat system operator at each heat dispatch interval can be decomposed into interpretable parts and its revenue adequacy can be guaranteed for all heat dispatch intervals. And the electric power system operator's resulting merchandise surplus is composed of non-negative components at each electricity dispatch interval, also ensuring its revenue adequacy. In addition, the effects of different time scales and cogeneration are analyzed in different kinds of combined heat and power units' pricing.

A Multiple Market Trading Mechanism for Electricity, Renewable Energy Certificate and Carbon Emission Right of Virtual Power Plants

A multiple market trading mechanism for the VPP to participate in electricity, renewable energy certificate (REC) and carbon emission right (CER) markets is proposed. With the introduction of the inventory mechanism of REC and CER, the profit of the VPP increases and better trading decisions with multiple markets are made under the requirements of renewable portfolio standard (RPS) and carbon emission (CE) quota requirements. According to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions of the proposed model, properties of the multiple market trading mechanism are discussed. Results from case studies verify the effectiveness of the proposed model.

NEC: Speaker Selective Cancellation via Neural Enhanced Ultrasound Shadowing

In this paper, we propose NEC (Neural Enhanced Cancellation), a defense mechanism, which prevents unauthorized microphones from capturing a target speaker's voice. Compared with the existing scrambling-based audio cancellation approaches, NEC can selectively remove a target speaker's voice from a mixed speech without causing interference to others. Specifically, for a target speaker, we design a Deep Neural Network (DNN) model to extract high-level speaker-specific but utterance-independent vocal features from his/her reference audios. When the microphone is recording, the DNN generates a shadow sound to cancel the target voice in real-time. Moreover, we modulate the audible shadow sound onto an ultrasound frequency, making it inaudible for humans. By leveraging the non-linearity of the microphone circuit, the microphone can accurately decode the shadow sound for target voice cancellation. We implement and evaluate NEC comprehensively with 8 smartphone microphones in different settings. The results show that NEC effectively mutes the target speaker at a microphone without interfering with other users' normal conversations.

Radiology Report Generation with a Learned Knowledge Base and Multi-modal Alignment

In clinics, a radiology report is crucial for guiding a patient's treatment. However, writing radiology reports is a heavy burden for radiologists. To this end, we present an automatic, multi-modal approach for report generation from a chest x-ray. Our approach, motivated by the observation that the descriptions in radiology reports are highly correlated with specific information of the x-ray images, features two distinct modules: (i) Learned knowledge base: To absorb the knowledge embedded in the radiology reports, we build a knowledge base that can automatically distil and restore medical knowledge from textual embedding without manual labour; (ii) Multi-modal alignment: to promote the semantic alignment among reports, disease labels, and images, we explicitly utilize textual embedding to guide the learning of the visual feature space. We evaluate the performance of the proposed model using metrics from both natural language generation and clinic efficacy on the public IU-Xray and MIMIC-CXR datasets. Our ablation study shows that each module contributes to improving the quality of generated reports. Furthermore, with the assistance of both modules, our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods over almost all the metrics.

SuperVoice: Text-Independent Speaker Verification Using Ultrasound Energy in Human Speech

Voice-activated systems are integrated into a variety of desktop, mobile, and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. However, voice spoofing attacks, such as impersonation and replay attacks, in which malicious attackers synthesize the voice of a victim or simply replay it, have brought growing security concerns. Existing speaker verification techniques distinguish individual speakers via the spectrographic features extracted from an audible frequency range of voice commands. However, they often have high error rates and/or long delays. In this paper, we explore a new direction of human voice research by scrutinizing the unique characteristics of human speech at the ultrasound frequency band. Our research indicates that the high-frequency ultrasound components (e.g. speech fricatives) from 20 to 48 kHz can significantly enhance the security and accuracy of speaker verification. We propose a speaker verification system, SUPERVOICE that uses a two-stream DNN architecture with a feature fusion mechanism to generate distinctive speaker models. To test the system, we create a speech dataset with 12 hours of audio (8,950 voice samples) from 127 participants. In addition, we create a second spoofed voice dataset to evaluate its security. In order to balance between controlled recordings and real-world applications, the audio recordings are collected from two quiet rooms by 8 different recording devices, including 7 smartphones and an ultrasound microphone. Our evaluation shows that SUPERVOICE achieves 0.58% equal error rate in the speaker verification task, it only takes 120 ms for testing an incoming utterance, outperforming all existing speaker verification systems. Moreover, within 91 ms processing time, SUPERVOICE achieves 0% equal error rate in detecting replay attacks launched by 5 different loudspeakers.

CCAT-NET: A Novel Transformer Based Semi-supervised Framework for Covid-19 Lung Lesion Segmentation

The spread of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has claimed millions of lives. Automatic segmentation of lesions from CT images can assist doctors with screening, treatment, and monitoring. However, accurate segmentation of lesions from CT images can be very challenging due to data and model limitations. Recently, Transformer-based networks have attracted a lot of attention in the area of computer vision, as Transformer outperforms CNN at a bunch of tasks. In this work, we propose a novel network structure that combines CNN and Transformer for the segmentation of COVID-19 lesions. We further propose an efficient semi-supervised learning framework to address the shortage of labeled data. Extensive experiments showed that our proposed network outperforms most existing networks and the semi-supervised learning framework can outperform the base network by 3.0% and 8.2% in terms of Dice coefficient and sensitivity.

IGrow: A Smart Agriculture Solution to Autonomous Greenhouse Control

Agriculture is the foundation of human civilization. However, the rapid increase of the global population poses a challenge on this cornerstone by demanding more food. Modern autonomous greenhouses, equipped with sensors and actuators, provide a promising solution to the problem by empowering precise control for high-efficient food production. However, the optimal control of autonomous greenhouses is challenging, requiring decision-making based on high-dimensional sensory data, and the scaling of production is limited by the scarcity of labor capable of handling this task. With the advances of artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), and cloud computing technologies, we are hopeful to provide a solution to automate and smarten greenhouse control to address the above challenges. In this paper, we propose a smart agriculture solution named iGrow, for autonomous greenhouse control (AGC): (1) for the first time, we formulate the AGC problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) optimization problem; (2) we design a neural network-based simulator incorporated with the incremental mechanism to simulate the complete planting process of an autonomous greenhouse, which provides a testbed for the optimization of control strategies; (3) we propose a closed-loop bi-level optimization algorithm, which can dynamically re-optimize the greenhouse control strategy with newly observed data during real-world production. We not only conduct simulation experiments but also deploy iGrow in real scenarios, and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of iGrow in autonomous greenhouse simulation and optimal control. Particularly, compelling results from the tomato pilot project in real autonomous greenhouses show that our solution significantly increases crop yield (+10.15\%) and net profit (+92.70\%) with statistical significance compared to planting experts.
