Valley-polarized Exitonic Mott Insulator in WS2/WSe2 Moiré Superlattice

Strongly enhanced electron-electron interaction in semiconducting moiré superlattices formed by transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) heterobilayers has led to a plethora of intriguing fermionic correlated states. Meanwhile, interlayer excitons in a type-II aligned TMDC heterobilayer moiré superlattice, with electrons and holes separated in different layers, inherit this enhanced interaction and strongly interact with each other, promising for realizing tunable correlated bosonic quasiparticles with valley degree of freedom. We employ photoluminescence spectroscopy to investigate the strong repulsion between interlayer excitons and correlated electrons in a WS2/WSe2 moiré superlattice and combine with theoretical calculations to reveal the spatial extent of interlayer excitons and the band hierarchy of correlated states. We further find that an excitonic Mott insulator state emerges when one interlayer exciton occupies one moiré cell, evidenced by emerging photoluminescence peaks under increased optical excitation power. Double occupancy of excitons in one unit cell requires overcoming the energy cost of exciton-exciton repulsion of about 30-40 meV, depending on the stacking configuration of the WS2/WSe2 heterobilayer. Further, the valley polarization of the excitonic Mott insulator state is enhanced by nearly one order of magnitude. Our study demonstrates the WS2/WSe2 moiré superlattice as a promising platform for engineering and exploring new correlated states of fermion, bosons, and a mixture of both.

Quadrupolar Excitons and Hybridized Interlayer Mott Insulator in a Trilayer Moiré Superlattice

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) moiré superlattices, owing to the moiré flatbands and strong correlation, can host periodic electron crystals and fascinating correlated physics. The TMDC heterojunctions in the type-II alignment also enable long-lived interlayer excitons that are promising for correlated bosonic states, while the interaction is dictated by the asymmetry of the heterojunction. Here we demonstrate a new excitonic state, quadrupolar exciton, in a symmetric WSe2-WS2-WSe2 trilayer moiré superlattice. The quadrupolar excitons exhibit a quadratic dependence on the electric field, distinctively different from the linear Stark shift of the dipolar excitons in heterobilayers. This quadrupolar exciton stems from the hybridization of WSe2 valence moiré flatbands. The same mechanism also gives rise to an interlayer Mott insulator state, in which the two WSe2 layers share one hole laterally confined in one moiré unit cell. In contrast, the hole occupation probability in each layer can be continuously tuned via an out-of-plane electric field, reaching 100% in the top or bottom WSe2 under a large electric field, accompanying the transition from quadrupolar excitons to dipolar excitons. Our work demonstrates a trilayer moiré system as a new exciting playground for realizing novel correlated states and engineering quantum phase transitions.

Asteroseismic investigation on KIC 10526294 to probe convective core overshoot mixing

In the overshoot mixing model with an exponentially decreasing diffusion coefficient, the initial value of the diffusion coefficient plays a crucial role. According to the turbulent convective mixing model, the characteristic length of convection in the convection zone differs from that in the overshoot region, resulting in a rapid decrease of the diffusion coefficient near the convective boundary. To investigate this quick decrease, we conducted an asteroseismic study on the intermediate-mass SPB star KIC 10526294. We generated stellar models with varied input parameters, including the overshoot parameters, and compared the resulting stellar oscillation periods with observations. To mitigate the potential issue arising from large steps in the stellar parameters and stellar age, we employed a comprehensive interpolation scheme for the stellar oscillatory frequencies, considering all stellar parameters and stellar age. Our analysis revealed that the quick decreasing of the diffusion coefficient has discernible effects on the stellar oscillations and a quick decrease with 4 magnitude orders shows the best oscillatory frequencies compared with the observations. This provides weak evidence in support of the prediction made by the turbulent convective mixing model. Furthermore, we examined the residuals of the oscillation periods and discovered a potential association between abundance anomalies in the buoyancy frequency profile and the oscillation-like patterns observed in the residuals.

Autonomous Exploration Method for Fast Unknown Environment Mapping by Using UAV Equipped with Limited FOV Sensor

Autonomous exploration is one of the important parts to achieve the fast autonomous mapping and target search. However, most of the existing methods are facing low-efficiency problems caused by low-quality trajectory or back-and-forth maneuvers. To improve the exploration efficiency in unknown environments, a fast autonomous exploration planner (FAEP) is proposed in this paper. Different from existing methods, we firstly design a novel frontiers exploration sequence generation method to obtain a more reasonable exploration path, which considers not only the flight-level but frontier-level factors in the asymmetric traveling salesman problem (ATSP). Then, according to the exploration sequence and the distribution of frontiers, an adaptive yaw planning method is proposed to cover more frontiers by yaw change during an exploration journey. In addition, to increase the speed and fluency of flight, a dynamic replanning strategy is also adopted. We present sufficient comparison and evaluation experiments in simulation environments. Experimental results show the proposed exploration planner has better performance in terms of flight time and flight distance compared to typical and state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed method is further evaluated in real-world environments.

Hysteretic Electronic Phase Transitions in Correlated Charge-Density-Wave State of 1T-TaS2

Recently, many exotic electronic states, such as quantum spin liquid (QSL) and superconductivity (SC), have been extensively discovered and introduced in layered transition metal dichalcogenides 1T-TaS2 by controlling their complex correlated charge-density-wave (CDW) states. However, few studies have focused on its hysteretic electronic phase transitions based on the in-depth discussion of the delicate interplay among temperature-dependent electronic interactions. Here, we reported a sequence of spatial electronic phase transitions in the hysteresis temperature range of 1T-TaS2 via variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (VT-STM). The emergence, evolution, coexistence, and separation of diverse novel electronic states within the commensurate CDW/triclinic CDW (CCDW/TCDW) phase are investigated in detail through the warming/cooling process. These novel emergent electronic states can be attributed to the delicate temperature-dependent competition and/or cooperation of interlayer interactions, intralayer electron-electron correlation, and electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling of 1T-TaS2. Our results not only provide a novel insight to understand the hysteretic electronic phase transitions of correlated CDW state, but also pave a way to realize more exotic quantum states by accurately and effectively controlling various interactions in correlated materials.

Travel distance, frequency of return and the spread of disease

In 2020 and 2021, the spread of COVID-19 was globally addressed by imposing restrictions on the distance of individual travel. Recent literature has uncovered a clear pattern in human mobility that underlies the complexity of urban mobility: $r \cdot f$, the product of distance traveled $r$ and frequency of return $f$ per user to a given location, is invariant across space. This paper asks whether the invariant $r\cdot f$ also serves as a driver for epidemic spread, so that the risk associated with human movement can be modeled by a unifying variable $r\cdot f$. We use two large-scale datasets of individual human mobility to show that there is in fact a simple relation between $r$ and $f$ and both speed and spatial dispersion of disease spread. This discovery could assist in modeling spread of disease and inform travel policies in future epidemics -- based not only on travel distance $r$ but also on frequency of return $f$.

Far-from-equilibrium slow modes and momentum anisotropy in expanding plasma

The momentum distribution of particle production in heavy-ion collisions encodes information about thermalization processes in the early-stage quark-gluon plasma. We use kinetic theory to study the far-from-equilibrium evolution of an expanding plasma with an anisotropic momentum-space distribution. We identify slow and fast degrees of freedom in the far-from-equilibrium plasma from the evolution of moments of this distribution. At late times, the slow modes correspond to hydrodynamic degrees of freedom and are naturally gapped from the fast modes by the inverse of the relaxation time, $τ_R^{-1}$. At early times, however, there are an infinite number of slow modes with a gap inversely proportional to time, $τ^{-1}$. From the evolution of the slow modes we generalize the paradigm of the far-from-equilibrium attractor to vector and tensor components of the energy-momentum tensor, and even to higher moments of the distribution function that are not part of the hydrodynamic evolution. We predict that initial-state momentum anisotropy decays slowly in the far-from-equilibrium phase and may persist until the relaxation time.

Detection of $δ$ Scuti pulsators in the eclipsing binaries observed by TESS

Based on 2-minute cadence TESS data from sectors 1-50, we report the results of the systematic extraction of $δ$ Scuti-type pulsations in the 6431 eclipsing binaries with orbital periods shorter than 13 days. A total number of 242 pulsators were found in those systems, including 143 new discoveries. We examined their pulsation properties based on the H-R diagram and the relationships between the dominant pulsation period $P_{\rm dom}$, orbital period $P_{\rm orb}$, and effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$. As a consequence, 216 targets are likely $δ$ Scuti stars (123 new), 11 likely $γ$ Doradus-$δ$ Scuti hybrid stars (8 new), 5 likely $β$ Cephei stars (4 new), 4 likely $δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Doradus hybrid stars (3 new), 3 likely Maia stars (3 new), 2 likely pulsating red giants (1 new), and a new unclassified star. As for the 6 new $δ$ Scuti pulsators in eclipsing binaries with $P_{\rm orb}$ $<$ 0.65 days, we found that 3 of them significantly exceed the upper limits of the $P_{\rm dom}$/$P_{\rm orb}$ ratio. This may indicate that $P_{\rm dom}$ and $P_{\rm orb}$ are uncorrelated for them. Finally, we statistically analyzed the dominant pulsation periods of the 216 $δ$ Scuti stars in eclipsing binaries. Those stars concentrate around 225 $μ$Hz and the proportion of stars in the high-frequency region is significantly higher than that of single stars, which could be ascribed to the mass transfer process.

From moments of the distribution function to hydrodynamics: The non-conformal case

We study the one-dimensional boost-invariant Boltzmann equation in the relaxation-time approximation using special moments of the distribution function for a system with a finite particle mass. The infinite hierarchy of moments can be truncated by keeping only the three lowest moments that correspond to the three independent components of the energy-momentum tensor. We show that such a three-moment truncation reproduces accurately the exact solution of the kinetic equation after a simple renormalization that takes into account the effects of the neglected higher moments. We derive second-order Israel-Stewart hydrodynamic equations from the three-moment equations, and show that, for most physically relevant initial conditions, these equations yield results comparable to those of the three-moment truncation, albeit less accurate. We attribute this feature to the fact that the structure of Israel-Stewart equations is similar to that of the three-moment truncation. In particular, the presence of the relaxation term in the Israel-Stewart equations, yields an early-time regime that mimics approximately the collisionless regime. A detailed comparison of the three-moment truncation with second-order non-conformal hydrodynamics reveals ambiguities in the definition of second-order transport coefficients. These ambiguities affect the ability of Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics to reproduce results of kinetic theory.

Beam Management in Ultra-dense mmWave Network via Federated Reinforcement Learning: An Intelligent and Secure Approach

Deploying ultra-dense networks that operate on millimeter wave (mmWave) band is a promising way to address the tremendous growth on mobile data traffic. However, one key challenge of ultra-dense mmWave network (UDmmN) is beam management due to the high propagation delay, limited beam coverage as well as numerous beams and users. In this paper, a novel systematic beam control scheme is presented to tackle the beam management problem which is difficult due to the nonconvex objective function. We employ double deep Q-network (DDQN) under a federated learning (FL) framework to address the above optimization problem, and thereby fulfilling adaptive and intelligent beam management in UDmmN. In the proposed beam management scheme based on FL (BMFL), the non-rawdata aggregation can theoretically protect user privacy while reducing handoff cost. Moreover, we propose to adopt a data cleaning technique in the local model training for BMFL, with the aim to further strengthen the privacy protection of users while improving the learning convergence speed. Simulation results demonstrate the performance gain of our proposed scheme.

Local discontinuous Galerkin method for a third order singularly perturbed problem of convection-diffusion type

The local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method is studied for a third-order singularly perturbed problem of the convection-diffusion type. Based on a regularity assumption for the exact solution, we prove almost $O(N^{-(k+1/2)})$ (up to a logarithmic factor) energy-norm convergence uniformly in the perturbation parameter. Here, $k\geq 0$ is the maximum degree of piecewise polynomials used in discrete space, and $N$ is the number of mesh elements. The results are valid for the three types of layer-adapted meshes: Shishkin-type, Bakhvalov-Shishkin type, and Bakhvalov-type. Numerical experiments are conducted to test the theoretical results.

Joint Optimization of Active and Passive Beamforming in Multi-IRS Aided mmWave Communications

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been considered as a promising technology to alleviate the blockage effect and enhance coverage in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication. To explore the impact of IRS on the performance of mmWave communication, we investigate a multi-IRS assisted mmWave communication network and formulate a sum rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the active and passive beamforming and the set of IRSs for assistance. The optimization problem is intractable due to the lack of convexity of the objective function and the binary nature of the IRS selection variables. To tackle the complex non-convex problem, an alternating iterative approach is proposed. In particular, utilizing the fractional programming method to optimize the active and passive beamforming and the optimization of IRS selection is solved by enumerating. Simulation results demonstrate the performance gain of our proposed approach.

PanGu-Coder: Program Synthesis with Function-Level Language Modeling

We present PanGu-Coder, a pretrained decoder-only language model adopting the PanGu-Alpha architecture for text-to-code generation, i.e. the synthesis of programming language solutions given a natural language problem description. We train PanGu-Coder using a two-stage strategy: the first stage employs Causal Language Modelling (CLM) to pre-train on raw programming language data, while the second stage uses a combination of Causal Language Modelling and Masked Language Modelling (MLM) training objectives that focus on the downstream task of text-to-code generation and train on loosely curated pairs of natural language program definitions and code functions. Finally, we discuss PanGu-Coder-FT, which is fine-tuned on a combination of competitive programming problems and code with continuous integration tests. We evaluate PanGu-Coder with a focus on whether it generates functionally correct programs and demonstrate that it achieves equivalent or better performance than similarly sized models, such as CodeX, while attending a smaller context window and training on less data.

Hydrodynamic attractor of noisy plasmas

We provide a generalized formulation of fluctuating hydrodynamics for the far-from-equilibrium noisy medium. As an example, we consider a noisy plasma experiencing Bjorken expansion, for which the leading order evolution is captured by hydrodynamic attractor of classical hydrodynamics, while the quadratic couplings of fluctuations are solved effectively via a generalized version of the hydrodynamic kinetic equation. In the far-from-equilibrium plasma, backreaction of hydrodynamic fluctuations results in renormalization of transport properties, as well as long time tails, of high orders. In particular, corresponding to a renormalized hydrodynamic attractor, evolution in a noisy plasma towards equilibrium becomes non-monotonic.

A New Outlier Removal Strategy Based on Reliability of Correspondence Graph for Fast Point Cloud Registration

Registration is a basic yet crucial task in point cloud processing. In correspondence-based point cloud registration, matching correspondences by point feature techniques may lead to an extremely high outlier ratio. Current methods still suffer from low efficiency, accuracy, and recall rate. We use a simple and intuitive method to describe the 6-DOF (degree of freedom) curtailment process in point cloud registration and propose an outlier removal strategy based on the reliability of the correspondence graph. The method constructs the corresponding graph according to the given correspondences and designs the concept of the reliability degree of the graph node for optimal candidate selection and the reliability degree of the graph edge to obtain the global maximum consensus set. The presented method could achieve fast and accurate outliers removal along with gradual aligning parameters estimation. Extensive experiments on simulations and challenging real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed method can still perform effective point cloud registration even the correspondence outlier ratio is over 99%, and the efficiency is better than the state-of-the-art. FAEP: Fast Autonomous Exploration Planner for UAV Equipped with Limited FOV Sensor

Autonomous exploration is one of the important parts to achieve the autonomous operation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). To improve the efficiency of the exploration process, a fast and autonomous exploration planner (FAEP) is proposed in this paper. We firstly design a novel frontiers exploration sequence generation method to obtain a more reasonable exploration path, which considers not only the flight-level but frontier-level factors into TSP. According to the exploration sequence and the distribution of frontiers, a two-stage heading planning strategy is proposed to cover more frontiers by heading change during an exploration journey. To improve the stability of path searching, a guided kinodynamic path searching based on a guiding path is devised. In addition, a dynamic start point selection method for replanning is also adopted to increase the fluency of flight. We present sufficient benchmark and real-world experiments. Experimental results show the superiority of the proposed exploration planner compared with typical and state-of-the-art methods.

Hydrodynamic attractor in the non-conformal Bjorken flow

Non-conformal attractor behavior is studied by solving non-conformal second order viscous hydrodynamics with respect to boost-invariant plasmas. Numerical solutions of the relative decay rate of the enthalpy density, the inverse shear and bulk Reynolds numbers, all exhibit universal patterns towards an ideal fluid description at late stages, demonstrating the existence of non-conformal hydrodynamic attractor. However, as a generic feature, the non-conformal hydrodynamic attractor emerges only at late times, which differs drastically from the behavior observed in conformal systems. The absence of the early-time attractor in non-conformal fluids is a consequence of the early-time instable mode, which arises from a positive-valued eigen-mode associated with the free-streaming dynamics. To support practical simulations of hydrodynamics in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, early-time attractor can be restored in a mixture of the shear and the bulk viscous corrections, in which early-time instable modes cancel approximately. Early-time non-conformal attractor is also approachable, if the quadratic coupling between the bulk pressure and the expansion rate is enhanced by at least a factor of two through the transport coefficient $δ_{ΠΠ}$.

Analytical attractor for Bjorken expansion

We present an analytic solution of a simple set of equations that govern the expansion of boost-invariant plasmas of massless particles. These equations describe, approximately, the early time, collisionless regime, and the transition to hydrodynamics at late time. Their mathematical structure encompasses all versions of second order hydrodynamics when applied to Bjorken flows. The analytic solution provides an explicit expression for the attractor solution that connects the collisionless regime to hydrodynamics. It also constitutes a neat example of an application of the theory of resurgence in asymptotic series.
