Enhanced measurement precision with continuous interrogation during dynamical decoupling

Dynamical decoupling (DD) is normally ineffective when applied to DC measurement. In its straightforward implementation, DD nulls out DC signal as well while suppressing noise. This work proposes a phase relay method (PRM) that is capable of continuously interrogating the DC signal over many DD cycles. We illustrate its efficacy when applied to measurement of a weak DC magnetic field with an atomic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Sensitivities approaching standard quantum limit (SQL) or Heisenberg limit (HL) are potentially realizable for a coherent spin state (CSS) or a squeezed spin state (SSS) of 10,000 atoms respectively, while ambient laboratory level noise is suppressed by DD. Our work offers a practical approach to mitigate the limitations of DD to DC measurement and will like find other applications for resorting coherence in quantum sensing and quantum information processing research.

Performing SU($d$) operations and rudimentary algorithms in a superconducting transmon qudit for $d=3$ and $d=4$

Quantum computation architecture based on $d$-level systems, or qudits, has attracted considerable attention recently due to their enlarged Hilbert space. Extensive theoretical and experimental studies have addressed aspects of algorithms and benchmarking techniques for qudit-based quantum computation and quantum information processing. Here, we report a physical realization of qudit with upto 4 embedded levels in a superconducting transmon, demonstrating high-fidelity initialization, manipulation, and simultaneous multi-level readout. In addition to constructing SU($d$) operations and benchmarking protocols for quantum state tomography, quantum process tomography, and randomized benchmarking etc, we experimentally carry out these operations for $d=3$ and $d=4$. Moreover, we perform prototypical quantum algorithms and observe outcomes consistent with expectations. Our work will hopefully stimulate further research interest in developing manipulation protocols and efficient applications for quantum processors with qudits.

Cyclic nonlinear interferometry with entangled non-Gaussian spin states

We propose an efficient nonlinear readout scheme for entangled non-Gaussian spin states (ENGSs) based on the intrinsic quasi-cyclic dynamics of interacting spin-1/2 systems. We focus on two well-known spin models of twist-and-turn (TNT) and two-axis-counter-twisting (TACT), where ENGS can be generated by spin dynamics starting from unstable fixed points. In the TNT model, non-Gaussian probe state evolves directly back to the vicinity of initial state during the subsequent time-forward evolution for path recombining, accompanied by quantum magnification of encoded signal and refocusing of the associated quantum noise. Based on low-order moment measurement, we find the optimal metrological gain nearly saturates the quantum Cramer-Rao bound (QCRB) and follows the Heisenberg scaling. For the TACT case, the QCRB can also be nearly approached when the state converges to either of the two unstable fixed points, respectively corresponding to the initial state or its orthogonal coherent state. The latter case goes beyond previous studies where tracing back to or crossing the initial states is mostly considered. The present protocol does not require time-reversal as in typical nonlinear interferometries, and it also avoids complicated measurement of nonlinear observables or full probability distributions. The operational approach we discuss presents a practical way for realizing high-precision and detection-noise-robust quantum metrology with ENGS.

Quantum enhanced sensing by echoing spin-nematic squeezing in atomic Bose-Einstein condensate

Quantum entanglement can provide enhanced precision beyond standard quantum limit (SQL), the highest precision achievable with classical means. It remains challenging, however, to observe large enhancement limited by the experimental abilities to prepare, maintain, manipulate and detect entanglement. Here, we present nonlinear interferometry protocols based on echoing spin-nematic squeezing to achieve record high enhancement factors in atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The echo is realized by a state-flip of the spin-nematic squeezed vacuum, which serves as the probe state and is refocused back to the vicinity of the unsqueezed initial state while carrying out near noiseless amplification of a signal encoded. A sensitivity of $21.6\pm0.5$ decibels (dB) for a small-angle Rabi rotation beyond the two-mode SQL of 26400 atoms as well as $16.6\pm1.3$ dB for phase sensing in a Ramsey interferometer are observed. The absolute phase sensitivity for the latter extrapolates to $103~\rm{pT/\sqrt{Hz}}$ at a probe volume of $18~μ\rm{m}^3$ for near-resonant microwave field sensing. Our work highlights the excellent many-body coherence of spin-nematic squeezing and suggests its possible quantum metrological applications in atomic magnetometer, atomic optical clock, and fundamental testing of Lorentz symmetry violation, etc.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Uplink Massive MIMO With Electromagnetic Exposure Constraints

Over the past few years, the prevalence of wireless devices has become one of the essential sources of electromagnetic (EM) radiation to the public. Facing with the swift development of wireless communications, people are skeptical about the risks of long-term exposure to EM radiation. As EM exposure is required to be restricted at user terminals, it is inefficient to blindly decrease the transmit power, which leads to limited spectral efficiency and energy efficiency (EE). Recently, rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has been proposed as an effective way to provide higher wireless transmission performance, which is a promising technology for future wireless communications. To this end, we propose using RSMA to increase the EE of massive MIMO uplink while limiting the EM exposure of users. In particularly, we investigate the optimization of the transmit covariance matrices and decoding order using statistical channel state information (CSI). The problem is formulated as non-convex mixed integer program, which is in general difficult to handle. We first propose a modified water-filling scheme to obtain the transmit covariance matrices with fixed decoding order. Then, a greedy approach is proposed to obtain the decoding permutation. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed EM exposure-aware EE maximization scheme for uplink RSMA.

Variational Matrix Product State Approach for Non-Hermitian System Based on a Companion Hermitian Hamiltonian

Non-Hermitian systems exhibiting topological properties are attracting growing interest. In this work, we propose an algorithm for solving the ground state of a non-Hermitian system in the matrix product state (MPS) formalism based on a companion Hermitian Hamiltonian. If the eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian system are known, the companion Hermitian Hamiltonian can be directly constructed and solved using Hermitian variational methods. When the eigenvalues are unknown, a gradient descent along with the companion Hermitian Hamiltonian yields both the ground state eigenenergy and the eigenstate. With the variational principle as a solid foundation, our algorithm ensures convergence and provides results in excellent agreement with the exact solutions of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (nH-SSH) model as well as its interacting extension. The approach we present avoids solving any non-Hermitian matrix and overcomes numerical instabilities commonly encountered in large non-Hermitian systems.

Entanglement and quantum teleportation under superposed gravitational fields

The influence of gravitational field on entanglement of bipartite states is investigated based on the recent idea of superposition states of gravitational field. Different from earlier considerations, we study the case where the gravitational field cannot be separated unitarily from the bipartite system in the final stage of the interaction. When the different gravitational field states are orthogonal, entanglement cannot be generated for an initial product state. If the different gravitational field states are non-orthogonal, entanglement can be generated and the amount of generated entanglement depends on an overlap parameter between different gravitational field states. The influence of gravitational field on the transfer of the state through quantum teleportation is also studied, which might lead to an observable effect since the quantum teleportation can be performed using macroscopic object.

Manipulating synthetic gauge fluxes via multicolor dressing of Rydberg-atom arrays

Arrays of highly excited Rydberg atoms can be used as powerful quantum simulation platforms. Here, we introduce an approach that makes it possible to implement fully controllable effective spin interactions in such systems. We show that optical Rydberg dressing with multicolor laser fields opens up distinct interaction channels that enable complete site-selective control of the induced interactions and favorable scaling with respect to decoherence. We apply this method to generate synthetic gauge fields for Rydberg excitations where the effective magnetic flux can be manipulated at the single-plaquette level by simply varying the phase of the local dressing field. The system can be mapped to a highly anisotropic Heisenberg model, and the resulting spin interaction opens the door for explorations of topological phenomena with nonlocal density interactions. A remarkable consequence of the interaction is the emergence of topologically protected long-range doublons, which exhibit strongly correlated motion in a chiral and robust manner.

Weighted MMSE Precoding for Constructive Interference Region

In this paper, we propose a symbol-level precoding (SLP) design that aims to minimize the weighted mean square error between the received signal and the constellation point located in the constructive interference region (CIR). Unlike most existing SLP schemes that rely on channel state information (CSI) only, the proposed scheme exploits both CSI and the distribution information of the noise to achieve improved performance. We firstly propose a simple generic description of CIR that facilitates the subsequent SLP design. Such an objective can further be formulated as a nonnegative least squares (NNLS) problem, which can be solved efficiently by the active-set algorithm. Furthermore, the weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) precoding and the existing SLP can be easily verified as special cases of the proposed scheme. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed precoding outperforms the state-of-the-art SLP schemes in full signal-to-noise ratio ranges in both uncoded and coded systems without additional complexity over conventional SLP.

Energy Efficiency Maximization of Massive MIMO Communications With Dynamic Metasurface Antennas

Future wireless communications are largely inclined to deploy massive numbers of antennas at the base stations (BSs) by leveraging cost- and energy-efficient as well as environmentally friendly antenna arrays. The emerging technology of dynamic metasurface antennas (DMAs) is promising to realize such massive antenna arrays with reduced physical size, hardware cost, and power consumption. The goal of this paper is the optimization of the energy efficiency (EE) performance of DMA-assisted massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications. Focusing on the uplink, we propose an algorithmic framework for designing the transmit precoding of each multi-antenna user and the DMA tuning strategy at the BS to maximize the EE performance, considering the availability of either instantaneous or statistical channel state information (CSI). Specifically, the proposed framework is shaped around Dinkelbach's transform, alternating optimization, and deterministic equivalent methods. In addition, we obtain a closed-form solution to the optimal transmit signal directions for the statistical CSI case, which simplifies the corresponding transmission design for the multiple-antenna case. Our numerical results verify the good convergence behavior of the proposed algorithms, and showcase the considerable EE performance gains of the DMA-assisted massive MIMO transmissions over the baseline schemes.

Massive MIMO Hybrid Precoding for LEO Satellite Communications With Twin-Resolution Phase Shifters and Nonlinear Power Amplifiers

The massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission technology has recently attracted much attention in the non-geostationary, e.g., low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication (SATCOM) systems since it can significantly improve the energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency. In this work, we develop a hybrid analog/digital precoding technique in the massive MIMO LEO SATCOM downlink, which reduces the onboard hardware complexity and power consumption. In the proposed scheme, the analog precoder is implemented via a more practical twin-resolution phase shifting (TRPS) network to make a meticulous tradeoff between the power consumption and array gain. In addition, we consider and study the impact of the distortion effect of the nonlinear power amplifiers (NPAs) in the system design. By jointly considering all the above factors, we propose an efficient algorithmic approach for the TRPS-based hybrid precoding problem with NPAs. Numerical results show the EE gains considering the nonlinear distortion and the performance superiority of the proposed TRPS-based hybrid precoding scheme over the baselines.

Hybrid RIS and DMA Assisted Multiuser MIMO Uplink Transmission With Electromagnetic Exposure Constraints

In the fifth-generation and beyond era, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and dynamic metasurface antennas (DMAs) are emerging metamaterials keeping up with the demand for high-quality wireless communication services, which promote the diversification of portable wireless terminals. However, along with the rapid expansion of wireless devices, the electromagnetic (EM) radiation increases unceasingly and inevitably affects public health, which requires a limited exposure level in the transmission design. To reduce the EM radiation and preserve the quality of communication service, we investigate the spectral efficiency (SE) maximization with EM constraints for uplink transmission in hybrid RIS and DMA assisted multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems. Specifically, alternating optimization is adopted to optimize the transmit covariance, RIS phase shift, and DMA weight matrices. We first figure out the water-filling solutions of transmit covariance matrices with given RIS and DMA parameters. Then, the RIS phase shift matrix is optimized via the weighted minimum mean square error, block coordinate descent and minorization-maximization methods. Furthermore, we solve the unconstrainted DMA weight matrix optimization problem in closed form and then design the DMA weight matrix to approach this performance under DMA constraints. Numerical results confirm the effectiveness of the EM aware SE maximization transmission scheme over the conventional baselines.

Near-Field Wideband Extremely Large-scale MIMO Transmission with Holographic Metasurface Antennas

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is the development trend of future wireless communications. However, the extremely large-scale antenna array could bring inevitable nearfield and dual-wideband effects that seriously reduce the transmission performance. This paper proposes an algorithmic framework to design the beam combining for the near-field wideband XL-MIMO uplink transmissions assisted by holographic metasurface antennas (HMAs). Firstly, we introduce a spherical-wave-based channel model that simultaneously takes into account both the near-field and dual-wideband effects. Based on such a model, we then formulate the HMA-based beam combining problem for the proposed XL-MIMO communications, which is challenging due to the nonlinear coupling of high dimensional HMA weights and baseband combiners. We further present a sum-mean-square-error-minimization-based algorithmic framework. Numerical results showcase that the proposed scheme can effectively alleviate the sum-rate loss caused by the near-field and dual-wideband effects in HMA-assisted XL-MIMO systems. Meanwhile, the proposed HMA-based scheme can achieve a higher sum rate than the conventional phase-shifter-based hybrid analog/digital one with the same array aperture.

Controlling atomic spin-mixing via multiphoton transitions in a cavity

We propose to control spin-mixing dynamics in a gas of spinor atoms, via the combination of two off-resonant Raman transition pathways, enabled by a common cavity mode and a bichromatic pump laser. The mixing rate, which is proportional to the synthesized spin-exchange interaction strength, and the effective atomic quadratic Zeeman shift (QZS), can both be tuned by changing the pump laser parameters. Quench and driving dynamics of the atomic collective spin are shown to be controllable on a faster time scale than in existing experiments based on inherent spin-exchange collision interactions. The results we present open a promising avenue for exploring spin-mixing physics of atomic ensembles accessible in current experiments.

Beam Squint-Aware Integrated Sensing and Communications for Hybrid Massive MIMO LEO Satellite Systems

The space-air-ground-sea integrated network (SAGSIN) plays an important role in offering global coverage. To improve the efficient utilization of spectral and hardware resources in the SAGSIN, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) has drawn extensive attention. Most existing ISAC works focus on terrestrial networks and can not be straightforwardly applied in satellite systems due to the significantly different electromagnetic wave propagation properties. In this work, we investigate the application of ISAC in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) low earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems. We first characterize the statistical wave propagation properties by considering beam squint effects. Based on this analysis, we propose a beam squint-aware ISAC technique for hybrid analog/digital massive MIMO LEO satellite systems exploiting statistical channel state information. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can operate both the wireless communications and the target sensing simultaneously with satisfactory performance, and the beam-squint effects can be efficiently mitigated with the proposed method in typical LEO satellite systems.

Nonlinear interferometry beyond classical limit facilitated by cyclic dynamics

Time-reversed evolution has substantial implications in physics, including prominent applications in refocusing of classical waves or spins and fundamental researches such as quantum information scrambling. In quantum metrology, nonlinear interferometry based on time reversal protocols supports entanglement-enhanced measurements without requiring low-noise detection. Despite the broad interest in time reversal, it remains challenging to reverse the quantum dynamics of an interacting many-body system as is typically realized by an (effective) sign-flip of the system's Hamiltonian. Here, we present an approach that is broadly applicable to cyclic systems for implementing nonlinear interferometry without invoking time reversal. Inspired by the observation that the time-reversed dynamics drives a system back to its starting point, we propose to accomplish the same by slaving the system to travel along a 'closed-loop' instead of explicitly tracing back its antecedent path. Utilizing the quasi-periodic spin mixing dynamics in a three-mode $^{87}$Rb atom spinor condensate, we implement such a 'closed-loop' nonlinear interferometer and achieve a metrological gain of $3.87_{-0.95}^{+0.91}$ decibels over the classical limit for a total of 26500 atoms. Our approach unlocks the high potential of nonlinear interferometry by allowing the dynamics to penetrate into deep nonlinear regime, which gives rise to highly entangled non-Gaussian state. The idea of bypassing time reversal may open up new opportunities in the experimental investigation of researches that are typically studied by using time reversal protocols.

Downlink Transmit Design for Massive MIMO LEO Satellite Communications

This paper investigates the downlink (DL) transmit design for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite communication systems, where only the slow-varying statistical channel state information is exploited at the transmitter. The channel model for the DL massive MIMO LEO satellite system is established, in which both the satellite and the user terminals (UTs) are equipped with uniform planar arrays. Observing the rank-one property of the channel matrices, we show that the single-stream precoding for each UT is the optimal choice that maximizes the ergodic sum rate. This favorable result simplifies the complicated design of transmit covariance matrices into that of precoding vectors without any loss of optimality. Then, an efficient algorithm is devised to compute the precoding vectors. Furthermore, we formulate an approximate transmit design based on the upper bound on the ergodic sum rate, for which the optimality of single-stream precoding still holds. We show that, in this case, the design of precoding vectors can be simplified into that of scalar variables, for which an effective algorithm is developed. In addition, a low-complexity learning framework is proposed for optimizing the scalar variables. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approaches can achieve significant performance gains over the existing schemes.

Hybrid Analog/Digital Precoding for Downlink Massive MIMO LEO Satellite Communications

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is promising for low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications due to the potential in enhancing the spectral efficiency. However, the conventional fully digital precoding architectures might lead to high implementation complexity and energy consumption. In this paper, hybrid analog/digital precoding solutions are developed for the downlink operation in LEO massive MIMO satellite communications, by exploiting the slow-varying statistical channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. First, we formulate the hybrid precoder design as an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem by considering both the continuous and discrete phase shift networks for implementing the analog precoder. The cases of both the fully and the partially connected architectures are considered. Since the EE optimization problem is nonconvex, it is in general difficult to solve. To make the EE maximization problem tractable, we apply a closed-form tight upper bound to approximate the ergodic rate. Then, we develop an efficient algorithm to obtain the fully digital precoders. Based on which, we further develop two different efficient algorithmic solutions to compute the hybrid precoders for the fully and the partially connected architectures, respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed approaches achieve significant EE performance gains over the existing baselines, especially when the discrete phase shift network is employed for analog precoding.
