Spatial Covariance Matrix Reconstruction for DOA Estimation in Hybrid Massive MIMO Systems with Multiple Radio Frequency Chains

Multiple signal classification (MUSIC) has been widely applied in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receivers for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. To reduce the cost of radio frequency (RF) chains operating at millimeter-wave bands, hybrid analog-digital structure has been adopted in massive MIMO transceivers. In this situation, the received signals at the antennas are unavailable to the digital receiver, and as a consequence, the spatial covariance matrix (SCM), which is essential in MUSIC algorithm, cannot be obtained using traditional sample average approach. Based on our previous work, we propose a novel algorithm for SCM reconstruction in hybrid massive MIMO systems with multiple RF chains. By switching the analog beamformers to a group of predetermined DOAs, SCM can be reconstructed through the solutions of a set of linear equations. In addition, based on insightful analysis on that linear equations, a low-complexity algorithm, as well as a careful selection of the predetermined DOAs, will be also presented in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can reconstruct the SCM accurately so that MUSIC algorithm can be well used for DOA estimation in hybrid massive MIMO systems with multiple RF chains.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for Multi-cell Massive MIMO: Centralized and Distributed Power Allocation Algorithms

This paper investigates the energy efficiency (EE) optimization in downlink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). In our research, the statistical channel state information (CSI) is exploited to reduce the signaling overhead. To maximize the minimum EE among the neighbouring cells, we design the transmit covariance matrices for each base station (BS). Specifically, optimization schemes for this max-min EE problem are developed, in the centralized and distributed ways, respectively. To obtain the transmit covariance matrices, we first find out the closed-form optimal transmit eigenmatrices for the BS in each cell, and convert the original transmit covariance matrices designing problem into a power allocation one. Then, to lower the computational complexity, we utilize an asymptotic approximation expression for the problem objective. Moreover, for the power allocation design, we adopt the minorization maximization method to address the non-convexity of the ergodic rate, and use Dinkelbach's transform to convert the max-min fractional problem into a series of convex optimization subproblems. To tackle the transformed subproblems, we propose a centralized iterative water-filling scheme. For reducing the backhaul burden, we further develop a distributed algorithm for the power allocation problem, which requires limited inter-cell information sharing. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated by extensive numerical results.

Energy-Efficient Precoding in Electromagnetic Exposure-Constrained Uplink Multiuser MIMO

User electromagnetic (EM) exposure is continuously being exacerbated by the evolution of multi-antenna portable devices. To mitigate the effects of EM radiation, portable devices must satisfy tight regulations on user exposure level, generally measured by specific absorption rate (SAR). To this end, we investigate the SAR-aware uplink precoder design for the energy efficiency (EE) maximization in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output transmission exploiting statistical channel state information (CSI). As the objective function of the design problem is computationally demanding in the absence of closed form, we present an asymptotic approximation of the objective to facilitate the precoder design. An iterative algorithm based on Dinkelbach's method and sequential optimization is proposed to obtain an optimal solution of the asymptotic EE optimization problem. Based on the transformed problem, an iterative SAR-aware water-filing scheme is further conceived for the EE optimization precoding design with statistical CSI. Numerical results illustrate substantial performance improvements provided by our proposed SAR-aware energy-efficient transmission scheme over the traditional baseline schemes.

Deterministic Pilot Design and Channel Estimation for Downlink Massive MIMO-OTFS Systems in Presence of the Fractional Doppler

Although the combination of the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation and the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology can make communication systems perform better in high-mobility scenarios, there are still many challenges in downlink channel estimation owing to inaccurate modeling and high pilot overhead in practical systems. In this paper, we propose a channel state information (CSI) acquisition scheme for downlink massive MIMO-OTFS in presence of the fractional Doppler, including deterministic pilot design and channel estimation algorithm. First, we analyze the input-output relationship of the single-input single-output (SISO) OTFS based on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modem and extend it to massive MIMO-OTFS. Moreover, we formulate an accurate model for the practical system in which the fractional Doppler is considered and the influence of subpaths is revealed. A deterministic pilot design is then proposed based on the model and the structure of the pilot matrix to reduce pilot overhead and save memory consumption. Since channel geometry changes very slowly relative to the communication timescale, we put forward a modified sensing matrix based channel estimation (MSMCE) algorithm to acquire the downlink CSI. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed downlink CSI acquisition scheme has significant advantages over traditional algorithms.

Location-Based Timing Advance Estimation for 5G Integrated LEO Satellite Communications

Integrated satellite-terrestrial communications networks aim to exploit both the satellite and the ground mobile communications, thus providing genuine ubiquitous coverage. For 5G integrated low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication systems, the timing advance (TA) is required to be estimated in the initial random access procedure in order to facilitate the uplink frame alignment among different users. However, due to the inherent characteristics of LEO satellite communication systems, e.g., wide beam coverage and long propagation delays, the existing 5G terrestrial uplink TA scheme is not applicable in the satellite networks. In this paper, we investigate location-based TA estimation for 5G integrated LEO satellite communication systems. We obtain the time difference of arrival (TDOA) and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) measurements in the downlink timing and frequency synchronization phase, which are made from the satellite at different time instants. We propose to take these measurements for either UE geolocation or ephemeris estimation, thus calculating the TA value. The estimation is then formulated as a quadratic optimization problem whose globally optimal solution can be obtained by a quadratic penalty algorithm. To reduce the computational complexity, we further propose an alternative approximation method based on iteratively performing a linearization procedure on the quadratic equality constraints. Numerical results show that the proposed methods can approach the constrained Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the TA estimation and thus assure uplink frame alignment for different users.

Quantum Phases of Time Order in Many-Body Ground States

Understanding phases of matter is of both fundamental and practical importance. Prior to the widespread appreciation and acceptance of topological order, the paradigm of spontaneous symmetry breaking, formulated along the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson (LGW) dogma, is central to understanding phases associated with order parameters of distinct symmetries and transitions between phases. This work proposes to identify ground state phases of quantum many-body system in terms of time order, which is operationally defined by the appearance of nontrivial temporal structure in the two-time auto-correlation function of a symmetry operator (order parameter). As a special case, the (symmetry protected) time crystalline order phase detects continuous time crystal (CTC). Time order phase diagrams for spin-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and quantum Rabi model are fully worked out. Besides time crystalline order, the intriguing phase of time functional order is discussed in two non-Hermitian interacting spin models.

Two-Color Optical Nonlinearity in an Ultracold Rydberg Atom Gas Mixture

We report the experimental observation of strong two-color optical nonlinearity in an ultracold gas of $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$-$^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atom mixture. By simultaneously coupling two probe transitions of $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb atoms to Rydberg states in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) configurations, we observe significant suppression of the transparency resonance for one probe field when the second probe field is detuned at $\sim1~\mathrm{GHz}$ and hitting the EIT resonance of the other isotope. Such a cross-absorption modulation to the beam propagation dynamics can be described by two coupled nonlinear wave equations we develope. We further demonstrate that the two-color optical nonlinearity can be tuned by varying the density ratio of different atomic isotopes, which highlights its potential for exploring strongly interacting multi-component fluids of light.

Faster State Preparation across Quantum Phase Transition Assisted by Reinforcement Learning

An energy gap develops near quantum critical point of quantum phase transition in a finite many-body (MB) system, facilitating the ground state transformation by adiabatic parameter change. In real application scenarios, however, the efficacy for such a protocol is compromised by the need to balance finite system life time with adiabaticity, as exemplified in a recent experiment that prepares three-mode balanced Dicke state near deterministically [PNAS {\bf 115}, 6381 (2018)]. Instead of tracking the instantaneous ground state as unanimously required for most adiabatic crossing, this work reports a faster sweeping policy taking advantage of excited level dynamics. It is obtained based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) from a multi-step training scheme we develop. In the absence of loss, a fidelity $\ge 99\%$ between prepared and the target Dicke state is achieved over a small fraction of the adiabatically required time. When loss is included, training is carried out according to an operational benchmark, the interferometric sensitivity of the prepared state instead of fidelity, leading to better sensitivity in about half of the previously reported time. Implemented in a Bose-Einstein condensate of $\sim 10^4$ $^{87}$Rb atoms, the balanced three-mode Dicke state exhibiting an improved number squeezing of $13.02\pm0.20$ dB is observed within 766 ms, highlighting the potential of DRL for quantum dynamics control and quantum state preparation in interacting MB systems.

Universal relations between atomic dipolar relaxation and van der Waals interaction

Dipolar relaxation happens when one or both colliding atoms flip their spins exothermically inside a magnetic ($B$) field. This work reports precise measurements of dipolar relaxation in a Bose-Einstein condensate of ground state $^{87}$Rb atoms together with in-depth theoretical investigations. Previous perturbative treatments fail to explain our observations except at very small $B$-fields. By employing quantum defect theory based on analytic solutions of asymptotic van der Waals interaction $-C_6/R^6$ ($R$ being interatomic spacing), we significantly expand the applicable range of perturbative treatment. We find the $B$-dependent dipolar relaxation lineshapes are largely universal, determined by the coefficient $C_6$ and the associated $s$-wave scattering lengths $a_{\rm sc}$ of the states before and after spin flips. This universality, which applies generally to other atomic species as well, implicates potential controls of dipolar relaxation and related cold chemical reactions by tuning $a_{\rm sc}$.

Topological Superconductors in One-Dimensional Mosaic Lattices

We study topological superconductor in one-dimensional (1D) mosaic lattice whose on-site potentials are modulated for equally spaced sites. When the system is topologically nontrivial, Majorana zero modes appear at the two ends of the 1D lattice. By calculating energy spectra and topological invariant of the system, we find the interval of the mosaic modulation of the on-site potential, whether it is periodic, quasiperiodic, or randomly distributed, can influence the topological properties significantly. For even interval of the mosaic potential, the system will always exist in the topological superconducting phase for any finite on-site potentials. When the interval is odd, the system undergoes a topological phase transition and enters into the trivial phase as the on-site potentials become stronger than a critical value, except for some special cases in the commensurate lattices. These conclusions are proven and the phase boundaries determined analytically by exploiting the method of transfer matrix. They reveal that robust Majorana zero modes can arise in 1D mosaic lattice independent of the strength of the spatially modulated potentials.

Magnetic solitons in an immiscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate magnetic solitons in an immiscible binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), where the intraspecies interactions are slightly weaker than the interspecies interactions. While their density and phase profiles are analogous to dark-bright solitons, other characteristic properties such as velocities, widths, total density depletions, and in-trap oscillations are different. In the low velocity regime, a magnetic soliton reduces to a traveling pair of magnetic domain walls. Collisional behaviors of the solitons are also briefly discussed. We further demonstrate that these solitonic states can be realized in a quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) spin-1 ferromagnetic BEC with weak spin interaction, e.g., a Rb87 BEC.

Energy Efficiency and Spectral Efficiency Tradeoff in RIS-Aided Multiuser MIMO Uplink Transmission

The emergence of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) enables us to establish programmable radio wave propagation that caters for wireless communications, via employing low-cost passive reflecting units. This work studies the non-trivial tradeoff between energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink communications aided by a RIS equipped with discrete phase shifters. For reducing the required signaling overhead and energy consumption, our transmission strategy design is based on the partial channel state information (CSI), including the statistical CSI between the RIS and user terminals (UTs) and the instantaneous CSI between the RIS and the base station. To investigate the EE-SE tradeoff, we develop a framework for the joint optimization of UTs' transmit precoding and RIS reflective beamforming to maximize a performance metric called resource efficiency (RE). For the design of UT's precoding, it is simplified into the design of UTs' transmit powers with the aid of the closed-form solutions of UTs' optimal transmit directions. To avoid the high complexity in computing the nested integrals involved in the expectations, we derive an asymptotic deterministic objective expression. For the design of the RIS phases, an iterative mean-square error minimization approach is proposed via capitalizing on the homotopy, accelerated projected gradient, and majorization-minimization methods. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness and rapid convergence rate of our proposed optimization framework.

High-resolution imaging of Rydberg atoms in optical lattices using an aspheric-lens objective in vacuum

We present a high-resolution, simple and versatile system for imaging ultracold Rydberg atoms in optical lattices. The imaging objective is a single aspheric lens (with a working distance of 20.6 mm and a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.51) placed inside the vacuum chamber. Adopting a large-working-distance lens leaves room for electrodes and electrostatic shields to control electric fields around Rydberg atoms. With this setup, we achieve an Rayleigh resolution of 1.10 $μ$m or $1.41λ$ ($λ=780$ nm), limited by the NA of the aspheric lens. For systems of highly excited Rydberg states with blockade radii greater than a few $μ$m, the resolution achieved is sufficient for studying many physical processes of interest.

Double Degenerate Bose-Fermi Mixture of Strontium and Lithium

We report on the attainment of a degenerate Fermi gas of $\rm^{6}Li$ in contact with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{84}$Sr. A degeneracy of $T/T_F=0.33(3)$ is observed with $1.6\times10^5$ $^{6}$Li atoms in the two lowest energy hyperfine states together with an almost pure BEC of $3.1\times10^5$ $^{84}$Sr atoms. The elastic s-wave scattering length between $^6$Li and $^{84}$Sr is estimated to be $|a_{\rm^{6}Li-\rm^{84}Sr}|=(7.1_{-1.7}^{+2.6})a_0$ ($a_0$ being the Bohr radius) from measured interspecies thermalization rates in an optical dipole trap.

Network Massive MIMO Transmission Over Millimeter-Wave and Terahertz Bands: Mobility Enhancement and Blockage Mitigation

Mobility and blockage are two critical challenges in wireless transmission over millimeter-wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) bands. In this paper, we investigate network massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission for mmWave/THz downlink in the presence of mobility and blockage. Considering the mmWave/THz propagation characteristics, we first propose to apply per-beam synchronization for network massive MIMO to mitigate the channel Doppler and delay dispersion effects. Accordingly, we establish a transmission model. We then investigate network massive MIMO downlink transmission strategies with only the statistical channel state information (CSI) available at the base stations (BSs), formulating the strategy design problem as an optimization problem to maximize the network sum-rate. We show that the beam domain is favorable to perform transmission, and demonstrate that BSs can work individually when sending signals to user terminals. Based on these insights, the network massive MIMO precoding design is reduced to a network sum-rate maximization problem with respect to beam domain power allocation. By exploiting the sequential optimization method and random matrix theory, an iterative algorithm with guaranteed convergence performance is further proposed for beam domain power allocation. Numerical results reveal that the proposed network massive MIMO transmission approach with the statistical CSI can effectively alleviate the blockage effects and provide mobility enhancement over mmWave and THz bands.

Spectral Efficiency and Energy Efficiency Tradeoff in Massive MIMO Downlink Transmission with Statistical CSIT

As a key technology for future wireless networks, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) can significantly improve the energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE), and the performance is highly dependant on the degree of the available channel state information (CSI). While most existing works on massive MIMO focused on the case where the instantaneous CSI at the transmitter (CSIT) is available, it is usually not an easy task to obtain precise instantaneous CSIT. In this paper, we investigate EE-SE tradeoff in single-cell massive MIMO downlink transmission with statistical CSIT. To this end, we aim to optimize the system resource efficiency (RE), which is capable of striking an EE-SE balance. We first figure out a closed-form solution for the eigenvectors of the optimal transmit covariance matrices of different user terminals, which indicates that beam domain is in favor of performing RE optimal transmission in massive MIMO downlink. Based on this insight, the RE optimization precoding design is reduced to a real-valued power allocation problem. Exploiting the techniques of sequential optimization and random matrix theory, we further propose a low-complexity suboptimal two-layer water-filling-structured power allocation algorithm. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness and near-optimal performance of the proposed statistical CSI aided RE optimization approach.

Multi-parameter estimation with multi-mode Ramsey interferometry

Estimating multiple parameters simultaneously is of great importance to measurement science and application. For a single parameter, atomic Ramsey interferometry (or equivalently optical Mach-Zehnder interferometry) is capable of providing the precision at the standard quantum limit (SQL) using unentangled probe states as input. In such an interferometer, the first beam splitter represented by unitary transformation $U$ generates a quantum phase sensing superposition state, while the second beam splitter $U^{-1}$ recombines the phase encoded paths to realize interferometric sensing in terms of population measurements. We prove that such an interferometric scheme can be directly generalized to estimation of multiple parameters (associated with commuting generators) to the SQL precision using multi-mode unentangled states, if (but not iff) $U$ is orthogonal, i.e. a unitary transformation with only real matrix elements. We show that such a $U$ can always be constructed experimentally in a simple and scalable manner. The effects of particle number fluctuation and detection noise on such multi-mode interferometry are considered. Our findings offer a simple solution for estimating multiple parameters corresponding to mutually commuting generators.
