Multi-Sound-Source Localization Using Machine Learning for Small Autonomous Unmanned Vehicles with a Self-Rotating Bi-Microphone Array

Abstract While vision-based localization techniques have been widely studied for small autonomous unmanned vehicles (SAUVs), sound-source localization capabilities have not been fully enabled for SAUVs. This paper presents two novel approaches for SAUVs to perform three-dimensional (3D) multi-sound-sources localization (MSSL) using only the inter-channel time difference (ICTD) signal generated by a self-rotating bi-microphone array. The proposed two approaches are based on two machine learning techniques viz., Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) and Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) algorithms, respectively, whose performances are tested and compared in both simulations and experiments. The results show that both approaches are capable of correctly identifying the number of sound sources along with their 3D orientations in a reverberant environment.

Adaptive Feature Selection Guided Deep Forest for COVID-19 Classification with Chest CT

Chest computed tomography (CT) becomes an effective tool to assist the diagnosis of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 worldwide, using the computed-aided diagnosis technique for COVID-19 classification based on CT images could largely alleviate the burden of clinicians. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Feature Selection guided Deep Forest (AFS-DF) for COVID-19 classification based on chest CT images. Specifically, we first extract location-specific features from CT images. Then, in order to capture the high-level representation of these features with the relatively small-scale data, we leverage a deep forest model to learn high-level representation of the features. Moreover, we propose a feature selection method based on the trained deep forest model to reduce the redundancy of features, where the feature selection could be adaptively incorporated with the COVID-19 classification model. We evaluated our proposed AFS-DF on COVID-19 dataset with 1495 patients of COVID-19 and 1027 patients of community acquired pneumonia (CAP). The accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE) and AUC achieved by our method are 91.79%, 93.05%, 89.95% and 96.35%, respectively. Experimental results on the COVID-19 dataset suggest that the proposed AFS-DF achieves superior performance in COVID-19 vs. CAP classification, compared with 4 widely used machine learning methods.

The Background Model of the Medium Energy X-ray telescope of Insight-HXMT

The Medium Energy X-ray Telescope (ME) is one of the main payloads of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (dubbed as Insight-HXMT). The background of Insight-HXMT/ME is mainly caused by the environmental charged particles and the background intensity is modulated remarkably by the geomagnetic field, as well as the geographical location. At the same geographical location, the background spectral shape is stable but the intensity varies with the level of the environmental charged particles. In this paper, we develop a model to estimate the ME background based on the ME database that is established with the two-year blank sky observations of the high Galactic latitude. In this model, the entire geographical area covered by Insight-HXMT is divided into grids of $5^{\circ}\times5^{\circ}$ in geographical coordinate system. For each grid, the background spectral shape can be obtained from the background database and the intensity can be corrected by the contemporary count rate of the blind FOV detectors. Thus the background spectrum can be obtained by accumulating the background of all the grids passed by Insight-HXMT during the effective observational time. The model test with the blank sky observations shows that the systematic error of the background estimation in $8.9-44.0$ keV is $\sim1.3\%$ for a pointing observation with an average exposure $\sim5.5$ ks. We also find that the systematic error is anti-correlated with the exposure, which indicates the systematic error is partly contributed by the statistical error of count rate measured by the blind FOV detectors.

Reconsidering Design of Multi-Antenna NOMA Systems with Limited Feedback

We provide in this paper a comprehensive solution to the design, performance analysis, and optimization of a multi-antenna non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system for multiuser downlink communications under a general limited channel state information (CSI) feedback framework for frequency division duplex mode. We design a general framework including user clustering, joint power and bits allocation, CSI quantization and feedback, signal superposition coding, transmit beamforming, and successive interference cancellation at receivers. Then, we conduct a mathematically strict performance analysis of the considered system, and obtain a closed-form lower bound on the ergodic rate of each user in terms of transmit power, CSI quantization accuracy and channel conditions. For exploiting the potentials of multiple-antenna techniques in NOMA systems, we jointly optimize two key parameters, i.e., transmit power and the number of feedback bits allocated to each user, and propose low-complexity closed-form solutions. Moreover, through asymptotic analysis, we reveal the interactions between the main system parameters and their impacts on the joint power and feedback bits allocation result, and hence show some guidelines on the system design. Finally, numerical results validate the correctness of our theoretical analysis and demonstrate the advantages of the proposed algorithms over the most related state of the art.

As China's first X-ray astronomical satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT), which was dubbed as Insight-HXMT after the launch on June 15, 2017, is a wide-band (1-250 keV) slat-collimator-based X-ray astronomy satellite with the capability of all-sky monitoring in 0.2-3 MeV. It was designed to perform pointing, scanning and gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations and, based on the Direct Demodulation Method (DDM), the image of the scanned sky region can be reconstructed. Here we give an overview of the mission and its progresses, including payload, core sciences, ground calibration/facility, ground segment, data archive, software, in-orbit performance, calibration, background model, observations and some preliminary results.

Exploring Overall Contextual Information for Image Captioning in Human-Like Cognitive Style

Image captioning is a research hotspot where encoder-decoder models combining convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) achieve promising results. Despite significant progress, these models generate sentences differently from human cognitive styles. Existing models often generate a complete sentence from the first word to the end, without considering the influence of the following words on the whole sentence generation. In this paper, we explore the utilization of a human-like cognitive style, i.e., building overall cognition for the image to be described and the sentence to be constructed, for enhancing computer image understanding. This paper first proposes a Mutual-aid network structure with Bidirectional LSTMs (MaBi-LSTMs) for acquiring overall contextual information. In the training process, the forward and backward LSTMs encode the succeeding and preceding words into their respective hidden states by simultaneously constructing the whole sentence in a complementary manner. In the captioning process, the LSTM implicitly utilizes the subsequent semantic information contained in its hidden states. In fact, MaBi-LSTMs can generate two sentences in forward and backward directions. To bridge the gap between cross-domain models and generate a sentence with higher quality, we further develop a cross-modal attention mechanism to retouch the two sentences by fusing their salient parts as well as the salient areas of the image. Experimental results on the Microsoft COCO dataset show that the proposed model improves the performance of encoder-decoder models and achieves state-of-the-art results.

Studies on the time response distribution of Insigh}-HXMT/LE

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.

The Medium Energy (ME) X-ray telescope onboard the Insight-HXMT astronomy satellite

The Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME) is one of the three main telescopes on board the Insight Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) astronomy satellite. ME contains 1728 pixels of Si-PIN detectors sensitive in 5-30 keV with a total geometrical area of 952 cm2. Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chips, VA32TA6, is used to achieve low power consumption and low readout noise. The collimators define three kinds of field of views (FOVs) for the telescope, 1°{\times}4°, 4°{\times}4°, and blocked ones. Combination of such FOVs can be used to estimate the in-orbit X-ray and particle background components. The energy resolution of ME is ~3 keV at 17.8 keV (FWHM) and the time resolution is 255 μs. In this paper, we introduce the design and performance of ME.

A Many-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm With Two Interacting Processes: Cascade Clustering and Reference Point Incremental Learning

Researches have shown difficulties in obtaining proximity while maintaining diversity for many-objective optimization problems. Complexities of the true Pareto front pose challenges for the reference vector-based algorithms for their insufficient adaptability to the diverse characteristics with no priori. This paper proposes a many-objective optimization algorithm with two interacting processes: cascade clustering and reference point incremental learning (CLIA). In the population selection process based on cascade clustering (CC), using the reference vectors provided by the process based on incremental learning, the nondominated and the dominated individuals are clustered and sorted with different manners in a cascade style and are selected by round-robin for better proximity and diversity. In the reference vector adaptation process based on reference point incremental learning, using the feedbacks from the process based on CC, proper distribution of reference points is gradually obtained by incremental learning. Experimental studies on several benchmark problems show that CLIA is competitive compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms and has impressive efficiency and versatility using only the interactions between the two processes without incurring extra evaluations.

Performance tests of boron-coated straw detectors with thermal and cold neutron beams

Prototypes of newly developed boron-coated straw (BCS) detectors have been tested in the thermal and cold neutron energy ranges. Their neutron detection performance has been benchmarked against the industry standard (detector tubes filled with 3He gas). The tests show that the BCS straws perform near their theoretical limit regarding the detection efficiency, which is adequate for scientific instruments in the cold neutron energy range. The BCS detectors perform on par with 3He tubes in terms of signal to noise and timing resolution, and superior regarding longitudinal spatial resolution.

Perfect Seismic Wave Absorbers for the 8th Magnitude Earthquakes

Most modern buildings and infrastructures are not designed to resist 8th magnitude earthquakes, for which studies on phononic crystals and local resonators reported so far are not particularly suited. We report a type of all-metallic decorated membrane resonators as deep subwavelength vibration dampers, which are modeled as meta-soil, that can block and even totally absorb underground seismic waves up to 8th magnitude earthquakes. Transmission attenuation exceeding 20 dB and absorption up to 98 % are numerically demonstrated for 1 Hz Rayleigh waves by a dozen rows of vertical underground wells filled with the meta-soil. A scaling law in the same form as the mass density law for airborne acoustic waves has been analytically derived and numerically verified.

Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst

The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to $\rm 150~keV$. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with $B\rm \sim 10^{13}~G$, $D\rm \sim 6~kpc$ and peak luminosity of $\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1}$ which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star.

RobustTrend: A Huber Loss with a Combined First and Second Order Difference Regularization for Time Series Trend Filtering

Extracting the underlying trend signal is a crucial step to facilitate time series analysis like forecasting and anomaly detection. Besides noise signal, time series can contain not only outliers but also abrupt trend changes in real-world scenarios. To deal with these challenges, we propose a robust trend filtering algorithm based on robust statistics and sparse learning. Specifically, we adopt the Huber loss to suppress outliers, and utilize a combination of the first order and second order difference on the trend component as regularization to capture both slow and abrupt trend changes. Furthermore, an efficient method is designed to solve the proposed robust trend filtering based on majorization minimization (MM) and alternative direction method of multipliers (ADMM). We compared our proposed robust trend filter with other nine state-of-the-art trend filtering algorithms on both synthetic and real-world datasets. The experiments demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms existing methods.

Robust Gaussian Process Regression for Real-Time High Precision GPS Signal Enhancement

Satellite-based positioning system such as GPS often suffers from large amount of noise that degrades the positioning accuracy dramatically especially in real-time applications. In this work, we consider a data-mining approach to enhance the GPS signal. We build a large-scale high precision GPS receiver grid system to collect real-time GPS signals for training. The Gaussian Process (GP) regression is chosen to model the vertical Total Electron Content (vTEC) distribution of the ionosphere of the Earth. Our experiments show that the noise in the real-time GPS signals often exceeds the breakdown point of the conventional robust regression methods resulting in sub-optimal system performance. We propose a three-step approach to address this challenge. In the first step we perform a set of signal validity tests to separate the signals into clean and dirty groups. In the second step, we train an initial model on the clean signals and then reweigting the dirty signals based on the residual error. A final model is retrained on both the clean signals and the reweighted dirty signals. In the theoretical analysis, we prove that the proposed three-step approach is able to tolerate much higher noise level than the vanilla robust regression methods if two reweighting rules are followed. We validate the superiority of the proposed method in our real-time high precision positioning system against several popular state-of-the-art robust regression methods. Our method achieves centimeter positioning accuracy in the benchmark region with probability $78.4\%$ , outperforming the second best baseline method by a margin of $8.3\%$. The benchmark takes 6 hours on 20,000 CPU cores or 14 years on a single CPU.

Multimodal Semantic Attention Network for Video Captioning

Inspired by the fact that different modalities in videos carry complementary information, we propose a Multimodal Semantic Attention Network(MSAN), which is a new encoder-decoder framework incorporating multimodal semantic attributes for video captioning. In the encoding phase, we detect and generate multimodal semantic attributes by formulating it as a multi-label classification problem. Moreover, we add auxiliary classification loss to our model that can obtain more effective visual features and high-level multimodal semantic attribute distributions for sufficient video encoding. In the decoding phase, we extend each weight matrix of the conventional LSTM to an ensemble of attribute-dependent weight matrices, and employ attention mechanism to pay attention to different attributes at each time of the captioning process. We evaluate algorithm on two popular public benchmarks: MSVD and MSR-VTT, achieving competitive results with current state-of-the-art across six evaluation metrics.

Which Factorization Machine Modeling is Better: A Theoretical Answer with Optimal Guarantee

Factorization machine (FM) is a popular machine learning model to capture the second order feature interactions. The optimal learning guarantee of FM and its generalized version is not yet developed. For a rank $k$ generalized FM of $d$ dimensional input, the previous best known sampling complexity is $\mathcal{O}[k^{3}d\cdot\mathrm{polylog}(kd)]$ under Gaussian distribution. This bound is sub-optimal comparing to the information theoretical lower bound $\mathcal{O}(kd)$. In this work, we aim to tighten this bound towards optimal and generalize the analysis to sub-gaussian distribution. We prove that when the input data satisfies the so-called $τ$-Moment Invertible Property, the sampling complexity of generalized FM can be improved to $\mathcal{O}[k^{2}d\cdot\mathrm{polylog}(kd)/τ^{2}]$. When the second order self-interaction terms are excluded in the generalized FM, the bound can be improved to the optimal $\mathcal{O}[kd\cdot\mathrm{polylog}(kd)]$ up to the logarithmic factors. Our analysis also suggests that the positive semi-definite constraint in the conventional FM is redundant as it does not improve the sampling complexity while making the model difficult to optimize. We evaluate our improved FM model in real-time high precision GPS signal calibration task to validate its superiority.

RobustSTL: A Robust Seasonal-Trend Decomposition Algorithm for Long Time Series

Decomposing complex time series into trend, seasonality, and remainder components is an important task to facilitate time series anomaly detection and forecasting. Although numerous methods have been proposed, there are still many time series characteristics exhibiting in real-world data which are not addressed properly, including 1) ability to handle seasonality fluctuation and shift, and abrupt change in trend and reminder; 2) robustness on data with anomalies; 3) applicability on time series with long seasonality period. In the paper, we propose a novel and generic time series decomposition algorithm to address these challenges. Specifically, we extract the trend component robustly by solving a regression problem using the least absolute deviations loss with sparse regularization. Based on the extracted trend, we apply the the non-local seasonal filtering to extract the seasonality component. This process is repeated until accurate decomposition is obtained. Experiments on different synthetic and real-world time series datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms existing solutions.

Super Damping of Mechanical Vibrations

We report the phenomenon of coherent super decay, where a linear sum of several damped oscillators can collectively decay much faster than the individual ones in the first stage, followed by stagnating ones after more than 90 percent of the energy has already been dissipated. The parameters of the damped oscillators for CSD are determined by the process of response function decomposition, which is to use several slow decay response functions to approximate the response function of a fast decay reference resonator. Evidence established in experiments and in finite element simulations not only strongly supported the numerical investigations, but also uncovered an unexplored region of the tuned mass damper parameter space where TMDs with total mass less than 0.2 percent of a primary free body can damp its first resonance up to a damping ratio of 4.6 percent. Our findings also shed light onto the intriguing underline connections between complex functions with different singular points.
