Cross-Technology Communications for Heterogeneous IoT Devices Through Artificial Doppler Shifts

Recent years have seen major innovations in developing energy-efficient wireless technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for Internet of Things (IoT). Despite demonstrating significant benefits in providing low power transmission and massive connectivity, hardly any of these technologies have made it to directly connect to the Internet. Recent advances demonstrate the viability of direct communication among heterogeneous IoT devices with incompatible physical (PHY) layers. These techniques, however, require modifications in transmission power or time, which may affect the media access control (MAC) layer behaviors in legacy networks. In this paper, we argue that the frequency domain can serve as a free side channel with minimal interruptions to legacy networks. To this end, we propose DopplerFi, a communication framework that enables a two-way communication channel between BLE and Wi-Fi by injecting artificial Doppler shifts, which can be decoded by sensing the patterns in the Gaussian frequency shift keying (GFSK) demodulator and Channel State Information (CSI). The artificial Doppler shifts can be compensated by the inherent frequency synchronization module and thus have a negligible impact on legacy communications. Our evaluation using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) BLE chips and 802.11-compliant testbeds have demonstrated that DopplerFi can achieve throughput up to 6.5~Kbps at the cost of merely less than 0.8% throughput loss.

On Secure Transmission Design: An Information Leakage Perspective

Information leakage rate is an intuitive metric that reflects the level of security in a wireless communication system, however, there are few studies taking it into consideration. Existing work on information leakage rate has two major limitations due to the complicated expression for the leakage rate: 1) the analytical and numerical results give few insights into the trade-off between system throughput and information leakage rate; 2) and the corresponding optimal designs of transmission rates are not analytically tractable. To overcome such limitations and obtain an in-depth understanding of information leakage rate in secure wireless communications, we propose an approximation for the average information leakage rate in the fixed-rate transmission scheme. Different from the complicated expression for information leakage rate in the literature, our proposed approximation has a low-complexity expression, and hence, it is easy for further analysis. Based on our approximation, the corresponding approximate optimal transmission rates are obtained for two transmission schemes with different design objectives. Through analytical and numerical results, we find that for the system maximizing throughput subject to information leakage rate constraint, the throughput is an upward convex non-decreasing function of the security constraint and much too loose security constraint does not contribute to higher throughput; while for the system minimizing information leakage rate subject to throughput constraint, the average information leakage rate is a lower convex increasing function of the throughput constraint.

Realtime Active Sound Source Localization for Unmanned Ground Robots Using a Self-Rotational Bi-Microphone Array

This work presents a novel technique that performs both orientation and distance localization of a sound source in a three-dimensional (3D) space using only the interaural time difference (ITD) cue, generated by a newly-developed self-rotational bi-microphone robotic platform. The system dynamics is established in the spherical coordinate frame using a state-space model. The observability analysis of the state-space model shows that the system is unobservable when the sound source is placed with elevation angles of $90$ and $0$ degree. The proposed method utilizes the difference between the azimuth estimates resulting from respectively the 3D and the two-dimensional models to check the zero-degree-elevation condition and further estimates the elevation angle using a polynomial curve fitting approach. Also, the proposed method is capable of detecting a $90$-degree elevation by extracting the zero-ITD signal 'buried' in noise. Additionally, a distance localization is performed by first rotating the microphone array to face toward the sound source and then shifting the microphone perpendicular to the source-robot vector by a predefined distance of a fixed number of steps. The integrated rotational and translational motions of the microphone array provide a complete orientation and distance localization using only the ITD cue. A novel robotic platform using a self-rotational bi-microphone array was also developed for unmanned ground robots performing sound source localization. The proposed technique was first tested in simulation and was then verified on the newly-developed robotic platform. Experimental data collected by the microphones installed on a KEMAR dummy head were also used to test the proposed technique. All results show the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of \textit{Insight}-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

High Ultrasonic Transmission Loss Metasurfaces in Water

We report the experimental demonstration of a class of ultrasonic metasurfaces made of patterned silicon thin wafers partially covered by Si3N4 film that exhibit over 24 dB of sound transmission loss around 0.7 MHz, which is caused by the cancelation of sound waves emitted by the resonant Si3N4 membrane and the ones through the silicon backbone in each unit cell. These metasurfaces are expected to have high reflection with little total loss even at ultrasonic frequency. They could be good candidates as the building blocks for low-loss cavities, phase zone plates, and other underwater acoustic metamaterials. As the working principle is scalable, it provides guidance for the designs of audible underwater sound barriers as well.

A Generic Formation Controller and State Observer for Multiple Unmanned Systems

In this paper, we present a novel decentralized controller to drive multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into a symmetric formation of regular polygon shape surrounding a mobile target. The proposed controller works for time-varying information exchange topologies among agents and preserves a network connectivity while steering UAVs into a formation. The proposed nonlinear controller is highly generalized and offers flexibility in achieving the control objective due to the freedom of choosing controller parameters from a range of values. By the virtue of additional tuning parameters, i.e. fractional powers on proportional and derivative difference terms, the nonlinear controller procures a family of UAV trajectories satisfying the same control objective. An appropriate adjustment of the parameters facilitates in generating smooth UAV trajectories without causing abrupt position jumps. The convergence of the closed-loop system is analyzed and established using the Lyapunov approach. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller which outperforms an existing formation controller by driving a team of UAVs elegantly in a target-centric formation. We also present a nonlinear observer to estimate vehicle velocities with the availability of position coordinates and heading angles. Simulation results show that the proposed nonlinear observer results in quick convergence of the estimates to its true values.

Experimental Study of Boron-coated Straws with a Neutron Source

Multiple types of high quality neutron detectors are proposed for the first phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), which will be commissioned in 2018. Considering the shortage of 3He supply, a detector module composed of 49 boron-coated straws (BCS) was developed by Proportional Technologies Inc. (PTI). Each straw has a length of 1000 mm and a diameter of 7.5 mm. Seven straws are tightly packed in a tube, and seven tubes are organized in a row to form a detector module. The charge division method is used for longitudinal positioning. A specific readout system was utilized to output the signal and simultaneously encode each straw. The performance of this detector module was studied using a moderated 252Cf source at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP). The signal amplitude spectrum indicates its n-gamma discrimination capability. Despite the complex readout method, a longitudinal resolution of 6.1-0.5 mm was obtained. The three-dimensional positioning ability qualifies this BCS detector module as a promising neutron scattering spectrometer detector.

Model-independent partial wave analysis using a massively-parallel fitting framework

The functionality of GooFit, a GPU-friendly framework for doing maximum-likelihood fits, has been extended to extract model-independent S-wave amplitudes in three-body decays such as $D^+ \to h^+h^+h^-$. A full amplitude analysis is done where the magnitudes and phases of the S-wave amplitudes are anchored at a finite number of $m^2(h^+h^-)$ control points, and a cubic spline is used to interpolate between these points. The amplitudes for P-wave and D-wave intermediate states are modeled as spin-dependent Breit-Wigner resonances. GooFit uses the Thrust library, with a CUDA backend for NVIDIA GPUs and an OpenMP backend for threads with conventional CPUs. Performance on a variety of platforms is compared. Executing on systems with GPUs is typically a few hundred times faster than executing the same algorithm on a single CPU.

Fill it up: Exploiting partial dependency annotations in a minimum spanning tree parser

Unsupervised models of dependency parsing typically require large amounts of clean, unlabeled data plus gold-standard part-of-speech tags. Adding indirect supervision (e.g. language universals and rules) can help, but we show that obtaining small amounts of direct supervision - here, partial dependency annotations - provides a strong balance between zero and full supervision. We adapt the unsupervised ConvexMST dependency parser to learn from partial dependencies expressed in the Graph Fragment Language. With less than 24 hours of total annotation, we obtain 7% and 17% absolute improvement in unlabeled dependency scores for English and Spanish, respectively, compared to the same parser using only universal grammar constraints.

Quantized CSI-Based Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding in Multiuser MIMO Systems

This paper considers the implementation of Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) precoding for multiuser MIMO systems based on quantized channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter side. Compared with the results in [1], our scheme applies to more general system setting where the number of users in the system can be less than or equal to the number of transmit antennas. We also study the achievable average sum rate of the proposed quantized CSI-based TH precoding scheme. The expressions of the upper bounds on both the average sum rate of the systems with quantized CSI and the mean loss in average sum rate due to CSI quantization are derived. We also present some numerical results. The results show that the nonlinear TH precoding can achieve much better performance than that of linear zero-forcing precoding for both perfect CSI and quantized CSI cases. In addition, our derived upper bound on the mean rate loss for TH precoding converges to the true rate loss faster than that of zeroforcing precoding obtained in [2] as the number of feedback bits becomes large. Both the analytical and numerical results show that nonlinear precoding suffers from imperfect CSI more than linear precoding does.

Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding for Multiuser MIMO Systems with Quantized CSI Feedback and User Scheduling

This paper studies the sum rate performance of a low complexity quantized CSI-based Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) precoding scheme for downlink multiuser MIMO tansmission, employing greedy user selection. The asymptotic distribution of the output signal to interference plus noise ratio of each selected user and the asymptotic sum rate as the number of users K grows large are derived by using extreme value theory. For fixed finite signal to noise ratios and a finite number of transmit antennas $n_T$, we prove that as K grows large, the proposed approach can achieve the optimal sum rate scaling of the MIMO broadcast channel. We also prove that, if we ignore the precoding loss, the average sum rate of this approach converges to the average sum capacity of the MIMO broadcast channel. Our results provide insights into the effect of multiuser interference caused by quantized CSI on the multiuser diversity gain.

Identify the diapycnical eddy diffusivities by salt fingers and turbulence with vertical microstructure measurements

Diapycnical eddy diffusivities are formulated from physical relations according to a simple fact that the different formulas are identical for the same parameter. It is found that the dispassion ratio Γis a crucial parameter. When it is above a critical value (about 0.2), the flow is salt finger type; otherwise, it is turbulence. All the density ratio $R_ρ=1/(1-Γ^2)$, eddy flux ratio $γ=1/(1+Γ)$, and eddy diffusivity ratio $R_k=1-Γ$ are simply dependent on the dispassion ratio gamma Γ. We apply these relations to the measurement data in the western tropical Atlantic Ocean. The effective diapycnal diffusivity is $0.96*10^{-4} m^2/s$ that agrees quite well with the observation from 0.8 to $0.9*10^{-4} m^2/s$ by tracer.

Two-body wrong-sign mixing and CP violation

We describe LHCb measurements for $D^0$--${\bar{D}}^0$ mixing parameters and searches for $CP$ violation using "wrong-sign" $D^0\to K^+π^-$ two-body decays. LHCb provides the world's most precise measurements of the mixing parameters to date, using 3 $fb^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data. By measuring the mixing parameters separately for $D^0$ and ${\bar{D}}^0$, and allowing for $CP$ violation, the LHCb results also place the world's most stringent constraints on the $CP$ violation parameters, $|q/p|$ and $A_D$, from a single experiment.

Efficient Data Augmentation in Dynamic Models for Binary and Count Data

Dynamic linear models with Gaussian observations and Gaussian states lead to closed-form formulas for posterior simulation. However, these closed-form formulas break down when the response or state evolution ceases to be Gaussian. Dynamic, generalized linear models exemplify a class of models for which this is the case, and include, amongst other models, dynamic binomial logistic regression and dynamic negative binomial regression. Finding and appraising posterior simulation techniques for these models is important since modeling temporally correlated categories or counts is useful in a variety of disciplines, including ecology, economics, epidemiology, medicine, and neuroscience. In this paper, we present one such technique, Pólya-Gamma data augmentation, and compare it against two competing methods. We find that the Pólya-Gamma approach works well for dynamic logistic regression and for dynamic negative binomial regression when the count sizes are small. Supplementary files are provided for replicating the benchmarks.

Axisymmetrically Tropical Cyclone-like Vortices with Secondary Circulations

The secondary circulation of the tropical cyclone (TC) is related to its formation and intensification, thus becomes very important in the studies. The analytical solutions have both the primary and secondary circulation in a three-dimensionally nonhydrostatic and adiabatic model. We prove that there are three intrinsic radiuses for the axisymmetrically ideal incompressible flow. The first one is the radius of maximum primary circular velocity $r_m$. The second one is radius of the primary kernel $r_k>r_m$, across which the vorticity of the primary circulation changes sign and the vertical velocity changes direction. The last one is the radius of the maximum primary vorticity $r_d$, at which the vertical flow of the secondary circulation approaches its maximum, and across which the radius velocity changes sign. The first TC-like vortex solution has universal inflow or outflow. The relations between the intrinsic length scales are $r_k=\sqrt{2}r_m$ and $r_d=2r_m$. The second one is a multi-planar solution, periodically in $z$-coordinate. Within each layer, the solution is a convection vortex. The number of the secondary circulation might be one, two, three, and even more. There are also three intrinsic radiuses $r_m$, $r_k$ and $r_d$, but they have different values. It seems that the relative stronger radius velocity could be easily found near boundaries. The above solutions can be applied to study the radial structure of the tornados, TCs and mesoscale eddies.

Expectation-maximization for logistic regression

We present a family of expectation-maximization (EM) algorithms for binary and negative-binomial logistic regression, drawing a sharp connection with the variational-Bayes algorithm of Jaakkola and Jordan (2000). Indeed, our results allow a version of this variational-Bayes approach to be re-interpreted as a true EM algorithm. We study several interesting features of the algorithm, and of this previously unrecognized connection with variational Bayes. We also generalize the approach to sparsity-promoting priors, and to an online method whose convergence properties are easily established. This latter method compares favorably with stochastic-gradient descent in situations with marked collinearity.
