LSGNN: Towards General Graph Neural Network in Node Classification by Local Similarity

Heterophily has been considered as an issue that hurts the performance of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). To address this issue, some existing work uses a graph-level weighted fusion of the information of multi-hop neighbors to include more nodes with homophily. However, the heterophily might differ among nodes, which requires to consider the local topology. Motivated by it, we propose to use the local similarity (LocalSim) to learn node-level weighted fusion, which can also serve as a plug-and-play module. For better fusion, we propose a novel and efficient Initial Residual Difference Connection (IRDC) to extract more informative multi-hop information. Moreover, we provide theoretical analysis on the effectiveness of LocalSim representing node homophily on synthetic graphs. Extensive evaluations over real benchmark datasets show that our proposed method, namely Local Similarity Graph Neural Network (LSGNN), can offer comparable or superior state-of-the-art performance on both homophilic and heterophilic graphs. Meanwhile, the plug-and-play model can significantly boost the performance of existing GNNs. Our code is provided at https://github.com/draym28/LSGNN.

Asymptotic Performance Analysis of Large-Scale Active IRS-Aided Wireless Network

In this paper, the dominant factor affecting the performance of active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided wireless communication networks in Rayleigh fading channel, namely the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) $γ_0$ at IRS, is studied. Making use of the weak law of large numbers, its simple asymptotic expression is derived as the number $N$ of IRS elements goes to medium-scale and large-scale. When $N$ tends to large-scale, the asymptotic received SNR at user is proved to be a linear increasing function of a product of $γ_0$ and $N$. Subsequently, when the BS transmit power is fixed, there exists an optimal limited reflective power at IRS. At this point, more IRS reflect power will degrade the SNR performance. Additionally, under the total power sum constraint of the BS transmit power and the power reflected by the IRS, an optimal power allocation (PA) strategy is derived and shown to achieve 0.83 bit rate gain over equal PA. Finally, an IRS with finite phase shifters being taken into account, generates phase quantization errors, and further leads to a degradation of receive performance. The corresponding closed-form performance loss expressions for user's asymptotic SNR, achievable rate (AR), and bit error rate (BER) are derived for active IRS. Numerical simulation results show that a 3-bit discrete phase shifter is required to achieve a trivial performance loss for a large-scale active IRS.

Facilitating Fine-grained Detection of Chinese Toxic Language: Hierarchical Taxonomy, Resources, and Benchmarks

The widespread dissemination of toxic online posts is increasingly damaging to society. However, research on detecting toxic language in Chinese has lagged significantly. Existing datasets lack fine-grained annotation of toxic types and expressions, and ignore the samples with indirect toxicity. In addition, it is crucial to introduce lexical knowledge to detect the toxicity of posts, which has been a challenge for researchers. In this paper, we facilitate the fine-grained detection of Chinese toxic language. First, we built Monitor Toxic Frame, a hierarchical taxonomy to analyze toxic types and expressions. Then, a fine-grained dataset ToxiCN is presented, including both direct and indirect toxic samples. We also build an insult lexicon containing implicit profanity and propose Toxic Knowledge Enhancement (TKE) as a benchmark, incorporating the lexical feature to detect toxic language. In the experimental stage, we demonstrate the effectiveness of TKE. After that, a systematic quantitative and qualitative analysis of the findings is given.

Dynamic online prediction model and its application to automobile claim frequency data

Prediction modelling of claim frequency is an important task for pricing and risk management in non-life insurance and needed to be updated frequently with the changes in the insured population, regulatory legislation and technology. Existing methods are either done in an ad hoc fashion, such as parametric model calibration, or less so for the purpose of prediction. In this paper, we develop a Dynamic Poisson state space (DPSS) model which can continuously update the parameters whenever new claim information becomes available. DPSS model allows for both time-varying and time-invariant coefficients. To account for smoothness trends of time-varying coefficients over time, smoothing splines are used to model time-varying coefficients. The smoothing parameters are objectively chosen by maximum likelihood. The model is updated using batch data accumulated at pre-specified time intervals, which allows for a better approximation of the underlying Poisson density function. The proposed method can be also extended to the distributional assumption of zero-inflated Poisson and negative binomial. In the simulation, we show that the new model has significantly higher prediction accuracy compared to existing methods. We apply this methodology to a real-world automobile insurance claim data set in China over a period of six years and demonstrate its superiority by comparing it with the results of competing models from the literature.

Computing the intrinsic grain boundary mobility tensor

Grain boundary (GB) mobility has been conventionally computed as a single value; however, a recent study has suggested that GB mobility should be expressed as a tensor. In this work, by using atomistic simulations, the concept of GB mobility being applied to the shear direction was re-examined and it is found that it follows the same physical rule as the conventionally defined GB mobility based on the normal direction. The interface random walk method was then used to compute the intrinsic GB mobility tensor at the zero-driving force limit. In order to compute the off-diagonal elements of the intrinsic GB mobility tensor, a shear coupling strength S is introduced in this study, which we believe can better reflect the intrinsic characteristics of a GB for its coupling trend between the normal and shear motion than the widely used shear coupling factor. Furthermore, the effect of temperature and external driving force on the GB mobility tensor, especially on its symmetry, was systematically investigated. It is shown that the GB mobility in either the normal or shear direction can show a non-Arrhenius type dependence on the applied driving force, which is similar to the widely reported non-Arrhenius (or anti-thermal) dependence of GB mobility on temperature. Accordingly, the classical GB migration equation was adapted to describe the diverse variation of GB mobility due to changes in both temperature and driving force.

Enabling Homogeneous GNNs to Handle Heterogeneous Graphs via Relation Embedding

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have been generalized to process the heterogeneous graphs by various approaches. Unfortunately, these approaches usually model the heterogeneity via various complicated modules. This paper aims to propose a simple yet effective framework to assign adequate ability to the homogeneous GNNs to handle the heterogeneous graphs. Specifically, we propose Relation Embedding based Graph Neural Network (RE-GNN), which employs only one parameter per relation to embed the importance of distinct types of relations and node-type-specific self-loop connections. To optimize these relation embeddings and the model parameters simultaneously, a gradient scaling factor is proposed to constrain the embeddings to converge to suitable values. Besides, we interpret the proposed RE-GNN from two perspectives, and theoretically demonstrate that our RE-GCN possesses more expressive power than GTN (which is a typical heterogeneous GNN, and it can generate meta-paths adaptively). Extensive experiments demonstrate that our RE-GNN can effectively and efficiently handle the heterogeneous graphs and can be applied to various homogeneous GNNs.

Binary Graph Convolutional Network with Capacity Exploration

The current success of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) usually relies on loading the entire attributed graph for processing, which may not be satisfied with limited memory resources, especially when the attributed graph is large. This paper pioneers to propose a Binary Graph Convolutional Network (Bi-GCN), which binarizes both the network parameters and input node attributes and exploits binary operations instead of floating-point matrix multiplications for network compression and acceleration. Meanwhile, we also propose a new gradient approximation based back-propagation method to properly train our Bi-GCN. According to the theoretical analysis, our Bi-GCN can reduce the memory consumption by an average of ~31x for both the network parameters and input data, and accelerate the inference speed by an average of ~51x, on three citation networks, i.e., Cora, PubMed, and CiteSeer. Besides, we introduce a general approach to generalize our binarization method to other variants of GNNs, and achieve similar efficiencies. Although the proposed Bi-GCN and Bi-GNNs are simple yet efficient, these compressed networks may also possess a potential capacity problem, i.e., they may not have enough storage capacity to learn adequate representations for specific tasks. To tackle this capacity problem, an Entropy Cover Hypothesis is proposed to predict the lower bound of the width of Bi-GNN hidden layers. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that our Bi-GCN and Bi-GNNs can give comparable performances to the corresponding full-precision baselines on seven node classification datasets and verified the effectiveness of our Entropy Cover Hypothesis for solving the capacity problem.

Class-Level Confidence Based 3D Semi-Supervised Learning

Recent state-of-the-art method FlexMatch firstly demonstrated that correctly estimating learning status is crucial for semi-supervised learning (SSL). However, the estimation method proposed by FlexMatch does not take into account imbalanced data, which is the common case for 3D semi-supervised learning. To address this problem, we practically demonstrate that unlabeled data class-level confidence can represent the learning status in the 3D imbalanced dataset. Based on this finding, we present a novel class-level confidence based 3D SSL method. Firstly, a dynamic thresholding strategy is proposed to utilize more unlabeled data, especially for low learning status classes. Then, a re-sampling strategy is designed to avoid biasing toward high learning status classes, which dynamically changes the sampling probability of each class. To show the effectiveness of our method in 3D SSL tasks, we conduct extensive experiments on 3D SSL classification and detection tasks. Our method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art counterparts for both 3D SSL classification and detection tasks in all datasets.

Report of the Topical Group on Particle Dark Matter for Snowmass 2021

This report summarizes the findings of the CF1 Topical Subgroup to Snowmass 2021, which was focused on particle dark matter. One of the most important scientific goals of the next decade is to reveal the nature of dark matter (DM). To accomplish this goal, we must delve deep, to cover high priority targets including weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs), and search wide, to explore as much motivated DM parameter space as possible. A diverse, continuous portfolio of experiments at large, medium, and small scales that includes both direct and indirect detection techniques maximizes the probability of discovering particle DM. Detailed calibrations and modeling of signal and background processes are required to make a convincing discovery. In the event that a candidate particle is found through different means, for example at a particle collider, the program described in this report is also essential to show that it is consistent with the actual cosmological DM. The US has a leading role in both direct and indirect detection dark matter experiments -- to maintain this leading role, it is imperative to continue funding major experiments and support a robust R\&D program.

Wave induced thrust on a submerged hydrofoil: pitch stiffness effects

Submerged flapping foils can convert wave energy directly into thrust, which could be potentially utilised for green marine propulsion. This study analyses the wave-induced flapping hydrofoil propulsion using an in-house developed, new computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework. The numerical model was initially validated against a few benchmarked problems and then used for the numerical investigation of wave-induced flapping hydrofoil propulsion. The transition between drag and thrust can be observed from the vortex flow pattern. The pitch stiffness and other physical parameter were non-dimensionalised for the first time. The optimal wave conditions and the optimal pitch stiffness are given for the future green marine system design.

Disentangling Object Motion and Occlusion for Unsupervised Multi-frame Monocular Depth

Conventional self-supervised monocular depth prediction methods are based on a static environment assumption, which leads to accuracy degradation in dynamic scenes due to the mismatch and occlusion problems introduced by object motions. Existing dynamic-object-focused methods only partially solved the mismatch problem at the training loss level. In this paper, we accordingly propose a novel multi-frame monocular depth prediction method to solve these problems at both the prediction and supervision loss levels. Our method, called DynamicDepth, is a new framework trained via a self-supervised cycle consistent learning scheme. A Dynamic Object Motion Disentanglement (DOMD) module is proposed to disentangle object motions to solve the mismatch problem. Moreover, novel occlusion-aware Cost Volume and Re-projection Loss are designed to alleviate the occlusion effects of object motions. Extensive analyses and experiments on the Cityscapes and KITTI datasets show that our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art monocular depth prediction methods, especially in the areas of dynamic objects. The Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE) mission: An overview

The Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE), dubbed "Xihe" - Goddess of the Sun, was launched on October 14, 2021 as the first solar space mission of China National Space Administration (CNSA). The CHASE mission is designed to test a newly developed satellite platform and to acquire the spectroscopic observations in the Hα waveband. The Hα Imaging Spectrograph (HIS) is the scientific payload of the CHASE satellite. It consists of two observational modes: raster scanning mode and continuum imaging mode. The raster scanning mode obtains full-Sun or region-of-interest spectral images from 6559.7 to 6565.9 Å and from 6567.8 to 6570.6 Å with 0.024 Å pixel spectral resolution and 1 minute temporal resolution. The continuum imaging mode obtains photospheric images in continuum around 6689 Å with the full width at half maximum of 13.4 Å. The CHASE mission will advance our understanding of the dynamics of solar activity in the photosphere and chromosphere. In this paper, we present an overview of the CHASE mission including the scientific objectives, HIS instrument overview, data calibration flow, and first results of on-orbit observations.

Price DOES Matter! Modeling Price and Interest Preferences in Session-based Recommendation

Session-based recommendation aims to predict items that an anonymous user would like to purchase based on her short behavior sequence. The current approaches towards session-based recommendation only focus on modeling users' interest preferences, while they all ignore a key attribute of an item, i.e., the price. Many marketing studies have shown that the price factor significantly influences users' behaviors and the purchase decisions of users are determined by both price and interest preferences simultaneously. However, it is nontrivial to incorporate price preferences for session-based recommendation. Firstly, it is hard to handle heterogeneous information from various features of items to capture users' price preferences. Secondly, it is difficult to model the complex relations between price and interest preferences in determining user choices. To address the above challenges, we propose a novel method Co-guided Heterogeneous Hypergraph Network (CoHHN) for session-based recommendation. Towards the first challenge, we devise a heterogeneous hypergraph to represent heterogeneous information and rich relations among them. A dual-channel aggregating mechanism is then designed to aggregate various information in the heterogeneous hypergraph. After that, we extract users' price preferences and interest preferences via attention layers. As to the second challenge, a co-guided learning scheme is designed to model the relations between price and interest preferences and enhance the learning of each other. Finally, we predict user actions based on item features and users' price and interest preferences. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed CoHHN. Further analysis reveals the significance of price for session-based recommendation.

Robotic Inspection of Underground Utilities for Construction Survey Using a Ground Penetrating Radar

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a very useful non-destructive evaluation (NDE) device for locating and mapping underground assets prior to digging and trenching efforts in construction. This paper presents a novel robotic system to automate the GPR data collection process, localize the underground utilities, interpret and reconstruct the underground objects for better visualization allowing regular non-professional users to understand the survey results. This system is composed of three modules: 1) an Omni-directional robotic data collection platform, that carries an RGB-D camera with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a GPR antenna to perform automatic GPR data collection, and tag each GPR measurement with visual positioning information at every sampling step; 2) a learning-based migration module to interpret the raw GPR B-scan image into a 2D cross-section model of objects; 3) a 3D reconstruction module, i.e., GPRNet, to generate underground utility model represented as fine 3D point cloud. Comparative studies are performed on synthetic data and field GPR raw data with various incompleteness and noise. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves a $30.0\%$ higher GPR imaging accuracy in mean Intersection Over Union (IoU) than the conventional back projection (BP) migration approach and $6.9\%$-$7.2\%$ less loss in Chamfer Distance (CD) than baseline methods regarding point cloud model reconstruction. The GPR-based robotic inspection provides an effective tool for civil engineers to detect and survey underground utilities before construction.

Snowmass2021 Cosmic Frontier White Paper: Puzzling Excesses in Dark Matter Searches and How to Resolve Them

Intriguing signals with excesses over expected backgrounds have been observed in many astrophysical and terrestrial settings, which could potentially have a dark matter origin. Astrophysical excesses include the Galactic Center GeV gamma-ray excess detected by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, the AMS antiproton and positron excesses, and the 511 and 3.5 keV X-ray lines. Direct detection excesses include the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation signal, the XENON1T excess, and low-threshold excesses in solid state detectors. We discuss avenues to resolve these excesses, with actions the field can take over the next several years.

Risk Loadings in Classification Ratemaking

The risk premium of a policy is the sum of the pure premium and the risk loading. In the classification ratemaking process, generalized linear models are usually used to calculate pure premiums, and various premium principles are applied to derive the risk loadings. No matter which premium principle is used, some risk loading parameters should be given in advance subjectively. To overcome this subjective problem and calculate the risk premium more reasonably and objectively, we propose a top-down method to calculate these risk loading parameters. First, we implement the bootstrap method to calculate the total risk premium of the portfolio. Then, under the constraint that the portfolio's total risk premium should equal the sum of the risk premiums of each policy, the risk loading parameters are determined. During this process, besides using generalized linear models, three kinds of quantile regression models are also applied, namely, traditional quantile regression model, fully parametric quantile regression model, and quantile regression model with coefficient functions. The empirical result shows that the risk premiums calculated by the method proposed in this study can reasonably differentiate the heterogeneity of different risk classes.

Multiple Residual Dense Networks for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Cascaded Channel Estimation

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) constitutes an essential and promising paradigm that relies programmable wireless environment and provides capability for space-intensive communications, due to the use of low-cost massive reflecting elements over the entire surfaces of man-made structures. However, accurate channel estimation is a fundamental technical prerequisite to achieve the huge performance gains from RIS. By leveraging the low rank structure of RIS channels, three practical residual neural networks, named convolutional blind denoising network, convolutional denoising generative adversarial networks and multiple residual dense network, are proposed to obtain accurate channel state information, which can reflect the impact of different methods on the estimation performance. Simulation results reveal the evolution direction of these three methods and reveal their superior performance compared with existing benchmark schemes.
