Intrinsic anomalous Nernst effect amplified by disorder in a half-metallic semimetal

Intrinsic anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), like its Hall counterpart, is generated by Berry curvature of electrons in solids. Little is known about its response to disorder. In contrast, the link between the amplitude of the ordinary Nernst coefficient and the mean-free-path is extensively documented. Here, by studying Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, a topological half-metallic semimetal hosting sizable and recognizable ordinary and anomalous Nernst responses, we demonstrate an anti-correlation between the amplitude of ANE and carrier mobility. We argue that the observation, paradoxically, establishes the intrinsic origin of the ANE in this system. We conclude that various intrinsic off-diagonal coefficients are set by the way the Berry curvature is averaged on a grid involving the mean-free-path, the Fermi wavelength and the de Broglie thermal length.

Magnetic exchange induced Weyl state in a semimetal EuCd2Sb2

Magnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) bearing long-time pursuing are still very rare. We herein identified magnetic exchange induced Weyl state in EuCd2Sb2, a semimetal in type IV magnetic space group, via performing high magnetic field (B) magneto-transport measurements and ab initio calculations. For the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure of EuCd2Sb2, external B larger than 3.2 T can align Eu spins to be fully polarized along the c-axis and consequently drive the system into a ferromagnetic (FM) state. Measurements up to B ~ 55 T revealed a striking Shubnikov-de Hass oscillation imposed by a nontrivial Berry phase. We unveiled a phase transition from a small-gap AFM topological insulator into a FM WSM in which Weyl points emerged along the Γ-Z path. Fermi arcs on (100) and (010) surfaces are also revealed. The results pave a way towards realization of various topological states in a single material through magnetic exchange manipulation.

Momentum-space and real-space Berry curvatures in Mn$_{3}$Sn

Mn$_{3}$X (X= Sn, Ge) are noncollinear antiferromagnets hosting a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Weyl nodes in the electronic dispersions are believed to cause this AHE, but their locus in the momentum space is yet to be pinned down. We present a detailed study of the Hall conductivity tensor and magnetization in Mn$_{3}$Sn crystals and find that in the presence of a moderate magnetic field, spin texture sets the orientation of the $k$-space Berry curvature with no detectable in-plane anisotropy due to the $Z_6$ symmetry of the underlying lattice. We quantify the energy cost of domain nucleation and show that the multidomain regime is restricted to a narrow field window. Comparing the field dependence of AHE and magnetization, we find that there is a distinct component in the AHE which does not scale with magnetization when the domain walls are erected. This so-called `topological' Hall effect provides indirect evidence for a non-coplanar spin components and real-space Berry curvature in domain walls.

Fermi Surface and Carriers Compensation of pyrite-type PtBi$_{2}$ Revealed by Quantum Oscillations

Large non-saturating magnetoresistance has been observed in various materials and electron-hole compensation has been regarded as one of the main mechanisms. Here we present a detailed study of the angle-dependent Shubnikov -de Haas effect on large magnetoresistance material pyrite-type PtBi$_{2}$, which allows us to experimentally reconstruct its Fermi-surface structure and extract the physical properties of each pocket. We find its Fermi surface contains four types of pockets in the Brillouin zone: three ellipsoid-like hole pockets $α$ with C$_4$ symmetry located on the edges (M points), one intricate electron pocket $β$ merged from four ellipsoids along [111] located on the corners (R points), two smooth and cambered octahedrons $γ$ (electron) and $δ$ (hole) on the center ($Γ$ point). The deduced carrier densities of electrons and holes from the volume of pockets prove carrier compensation. This compensation at low temperatures is also supported by fitting the field dependence of Hall and magnetoresistance at different temperatures. We conclude that the compensation is the main mechanism for the large non-saturating magnetoresistance in pyrite-type PtBi$_{2}$. We found the hole pockets α may contribute major mobility because of their light masses and anisotropy to relatively avoid large-angle scattering at low temperature. This may be a common feature of semimetals with large magnetoresistance. The found sub-quadratic magnetoresistance in high field is probably due to field-dependent mobilities, another feature of semimetals under high magnetic fields.

Anomalous Nernst and Righi-Leduc effects in Mn$_{3}$Sn: Berry curvature and entropy flow

We present a study of electric, thermal and thermoelectric response in noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn$_{3}$Sn, which hosts a large Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE). Berry curvature generates off-diagonal thermal(Righi-Leduc) and thermoelectric(Nernst) signals, which are detectable at room temperature and invertible with a small magnetic field. The thermal and electrical Hall conductivities respect the Wiedemann-Franz law, implying that the transverse currents induced by Berry curvature are carried by Fermi surface quasi-particles. In contrast to conventional ferromagnets, the anomalous Lorenz number remains close to the Sommerfeld number over the whole temperature range of study, excluding any contribution by inelastic scattering and pointing to Berry curvature as the unique source of AHE. The anomalous off-diagonal thermo-electric and Hall conductivities are strongly temperature-dependent and their ratio is close to k$_{B}$/e.
