Artificial Intelligence Reshapes Microwave Photonics

As a rapidly emerging interdisciplinary field that intrinsically integrates microwave and photonics, microwave photonics (MWP) provides disruptive solutions to overcome the fundamental bandwidth of conventional electronic systems. By exploiting the inherently ultra-wide bandwidth and low-loss characteristics of photonic technologies, MWP enables the generation, transmission, processing, and detection of microwave, millimeter-wave, and terahertz signals. Representative breakthroughs include fully photonic microwave radar systems, photonic analog-to-digital converters with bandwidth up to 320 GHz, and photonic wireless communication systems achieving data rate as high as 616 Gbit/s. Meanwhile, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping scientific research, engineering, and daily life in unprecedented ways, such as AI for science/engineering and AI co-scientist/assistant. Correspondingly, AI is profoundly reshaping MWP in all aspects, ranging from signal generation, transmission to signal processing and detection. AI has revolutionized the design, simulation, fabrication, testing, deployment, and maintenance of MWP systems, delivering autonomous operation and exceptional efficiency beyond traditional systems. Motivated by these developments, this Review Paper provides the first comprehensive overview of AI-enabled MWP, systematically summarizing the state-of-the-art advances and presenting insights for both the academic community and the broader public.

Petabit-per-second Random Number Generation

Physical random number generators based on chaotic microcombs, with their complex nonlinear dynamics and multi-channel parallel capability, have attracted considerable research attention. However, key technical challenges for chaotic microcombs are the high correlation between symmetric teeth and the low bandwidth of single-channel teeth, which seriously affect the speed and scalability of random number generation. We experimentally demonstrate a petabit-per-second (Pbit/s) parallel random number generation system based on intensity chaotic modulation and Rayleigh scattering. Through intensity modulation, the effective bandwidth of the single-channel entropy source is increased from 440MHz to 27.6GHz. Crucially, Rayleigh scattering further contributes through the random superposition of backscattered light, which introduces unpredictable fluctuations in intensity, phase, and polarization. This randomness suppresses inter-channel correlation among parallel entropy sources to ~0.02, ensuring their orthogonality. Moreover, by employing polarization-diverse coherent detection on a single-channel, four new low correlated sub-channels are extracted: X-/Y- intensity and phase. We achieve a single-channel bit rate of 14.336 Tbit/s and a total bit rate of 1.032 Pbit/s (over 72 parallel channels) with offline post-processing, representing the highest post-processing record reported in both the single-channel and the total system. Moreover, our scheme based on a single chaotic microcomb and fiber scattering link show fundamentally scalable. The total bit rate can be significantly pushed beyond the Pbit/s level by further expanding the usable comb channel and/or by deploying multiple fiber scattering links in parallel, paving a practical path toward higher throughput regimes.

Enhancing Channel Estimation for OTFS systems using Sparse Bayesian Learning with Adaptive Threshold

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a two-dimensional modulation scheme designed in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, exhibiting superior performance over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation in environments with high Doppler frequency shifts. We investigated the channel estimation in the DD domain of OTFS systems, modeling it as a sparse signal recovery problem. Subsequently, within the existing sparse Bayesian learning framework, we proposed an adaptive Bayesian threshold-based active denoising mechanism. Combined with inverse-free sparse Bayesian learning, this effectively addresses the pseudo-peak issue in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios while maintaining low complexity. The simulation results demonstrate that this algorithm outperforms existing channel estimation algorithms in terms of anti-noise performance and complexity.

Synergistic Antenna-Modulator Integration for Monolithic Photonic RF Receiver

Integrated radio-frequency (RF) photonics plays a pivotal role in wireless communications, sensing, and radar due to its large intrinsic bandwidth, remote distribution capability, and compact footprint. However, despite significant advances in photonic integrated circuits (PICs), the practical deployment of these systems remains constrained by the bulky nature of essential RF components (e.g., bulky antennas, amplifiers, and cables), especially in covert, conformal, and space-constrained applications. To overcome these limitations, monolithic electronic-photonic integrated circuits (EPICs), enabling miniaturized and synergistic integration of both RF and photonic components, are gaining notable attention. As a groundbreaking advancement, we demonstrate a novel photonic RF receiver that monolithically integrates a bow-tie antenna and a microring modulator on a thin-film lithium niobate platform. The chip innovatively leverages dual-resonance enhancement mechanism, RF resonance from the antenna and optical resonance from the microring, to significantly boost the RF-to-optical conversion efficiency. A record-high figure of merit (FOM) of 3.88 W-1/2 is achieved within a compact footprint of 2*1.7 mm2. As the first demonstrations, the integrated receiver is deployed in an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, achieving centimeter-level radar ranging accuracy and 3.2 Gbps wireless communication capacity, as well as real-time video transmission function in moving scenarios. This seminal work paves a new way for covert, conformal, and miniaturized frontends in wireless communication and sensing applications, including body area networks, unmanned aerial vehicles, high-speed vacuum maglevs, and electronic warfare systems.

A 3.584 Tbps coherent receiver chip on InP-LiNbO3 wafer-level integration platform

The rapid advancement of the thin-film lithium niobate (LiNbO3) platform has established it as a premier choice for high-performance photonics integrated circuits. However, the scalability and cost-efficiency of this platform are hindered by the reliance on chip-level fabrication and integration for passive and active components, necessitating a robust wafer-level LiNbO3 heterogeneous integration platform. Despite its critical role in enabling ultrahigh-speed optical interconnects, as well as optical mmWave/THz sensing and communication, the realization of ultrahigh-speed photodiodes and optical coherent receivers on the LiNbO_3 platform remains an unresolved challenge. This is primarily due to the challenges associated with the large-scale integration of direct-bandgap materials. To address these challenges, we have developed a scalable, high-speed InP-LiNbO3 wafer-level heterogeneous integration platform. This platform facilitates the fabrication of ultrahigh-speed photodiodes with a bandwidth of 140 GHz, capable of receiving high-quality 100-Gbaud pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signals. Moreover, we demonstrate a seven-channel, single-polarization I-Q coherent receiver chip with an aggregate receiving capacity of 3.584 Tbit/s. This coherent receiver exhibits a balanced detection bandwidth of 60 GHz and a common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) exceeding 20 dB. It achieves receiving capacities of 600 Gbit/s/\lambda with a 100-Gbaud 64-QAM signal and 512 Gbit/s/\lambda with a 128-Gbaud 16-QAM signal. Furthermore, energy consumption as low as 9.6 fJ/bit and 13.5 fJ/bit is achieved for 200 Gbit/s and 400 Gbit/s capacities, respectively. Our work provides a viable pathway toward enabling Pbps hyperscale data center interconnects, as well as optical mmWave/THz sensing and communication.

Ultra-wideband Waveguide-coupled Photodiodes Heterogeneously Integrated on a Thin-film Lithium Niobate Platform

With the advantages of large electro-optical coefficient, wide transparency window, and strong optical confinement, thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) technique has enabled the development of various high-performance optoelectronics devices, ranging from the ultra-wideband electro-optic modulators to the high-efficient quantum sources. However, the TFLN platform does not natively promise lasers and photodiodes. This study presents an InP/InGaAs modified uni-traveling carrier (MUTC) photodiodes heterogeneously integrated on the TFLN platform with a record-high 3-dB bandwidth of 110 GHz and a responsivity of 0.4 A/W at a 1550-nm wavelength. It is implemented on a wafer-level TFLN-InP heterogeneous integration platform and is suitable for the large-scale, multi-function, and high-performance TFLN photonic integrated circuits.

Reciprocal phase transition-enabled electro-optic modulation

Electro-optic (EO) modulation is a well-known and essential topic in the field of communications and sensing. Its ultrahigh efficiency is unprecedentedly desired in the current green and data era. However, dramatically increasing the modulation efficiency is difficult due to the monotonic mapping relationship between the electrical signal and modulated optical signal. Here, a new mechanism termed phase-transition EO modulation is revealed from the reciprocal transition between two distinct phase planes arising from the bifurcation. Remarkably, a monolithically integrated mode-locked laser (MLL) is implemented as a prototype. A 24.8-GHz radio-frequency signal is generated and modulated, achieving a modulation energy efficiency of 3.06 fJ/bit improved by about four orders of magnitude and a contrast ratio exceeding 50 dB. Thus, MLL-based phase-transition EO modulation is characterised by ultrahigh modulation efficiency and ultrahigh contrast ratio, as experimentally proved in radio-over-fibre and underwater acoustic-sensing systems. This phase-transition EO modulation opens a new avenue for green communication and ubiquitous connections.

Cost-effective photonic super-resolution millimeter-wave joint radar-communication system using self-coherent detection

A cost-effective millimeter-wave (MMW) joint radar-communication (JRC) system with super resolution is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, using optical heterodyne up-conversion and self-coherent detection down-conversion techniques. The point lies in the designed coherent dual-band constant envelope linear frequency modulation-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (LFM-OFDM) signal with opposite phase modulation indexes for the JRC system. Then the self-coherent detection, as a simple and low-cost means, is accordingly facilitated for both de-chirping of MMW radar and frequency down-conversion reception of MMW communication, which circumvents the costly high-speed mixers along with MMW local oscillators and more significantly achieves the real-time decomposition of radar and communication information. Furthermore, a super resolution radar range profile is realized through the coherent fusion processing of dual-band JRC signal. In experiments, a dual-band LFM-OFDM JRC signal centered at 54-GHz and 61-GHz is generated. The dual bands are featured with an identical instantaneous bandwidth of 2 GHz and carry an OFDM signal of 1 GBaud, which help to achieve a 6-Gbit/s data rate for communication and a 1.76-cm range resolution for radar.

0.75 Gbit/s high-speed classical key distribution with mode-shift keying chaos synchronization of Fabry-Perot lasers

High-speed physical key distribution is diligently pursued for secure communication. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme of high-speed key distribution using mode-shift keying chaos synchronization between two multi-longitudinal-mode Fabry-Perot lasers commonly driven by a super-luminescent diode. Legitimate users dynamically select one of the longitudinal modes according to private control codes to achieve mode-shift keying chaos synchronization. The two remote chaotic light waveforms are quantized to generate two raw random bit streams, and then those bits corresponding to chaos synchronization are sifted as shared keys by comparing the control codes. In this method, the transition time, i.e., the chaos synchronization recovery time is determined by the rising time of the control codes rather than the laser transition response time, so the key distribution rate is improved greatly. Our experiment achieved 0.75-Gbit/s key distribution rate with a bit error rate of 3.8*10-3 over 160-km fiber transmission with dispersion compensation. The entropy rate of the laser chaos is evaluated as 16 Gbit/s, which determines the ultimate final key rate together with key generation ratio. It is therefore believed that the method pays a way for Gbit/s physical key distribution.

Efficient Discrete Supervised Hashing for Large-scale Cross-modal Retrieval

Supervised cross-modal hashing has gained increasing research interest on large-scale retrieval task owning to its satisfactory performance and efficiency. However, it still has some challenging issues to be further studied: 1) most of them fail to well preserve the semantic correlations in hash codes because of the large heterogenous gap; 2) most of them relax the discrete constraint on hash codes, leading to large quantization error and consequent low performance; 3) most of them suffer from relatively high memory cost and computational complexity during training procedure, which makes them unscalable. In this paper, to address above issues, we propose a supervised cross-modal hashing method based on matrix factorization dubbed Efficient Discrete Supervised Hashing (EDSH). Specifically, collective matrix factorization on heterogenous features and semantic embedding with class labels are seamlessly integrated to learn hash codes. Therefore, the feature based similarities and semantic correlations can be both preserved in hash codes, which makes the learned hash codes more discriminative. Then an efficient discrete optimal algorithm is proposed to handle the scalable issue. Instead of learning hash codes bit-by-bit, hash codes matrix can be obtained directly which is more efficient. Extensive experimental results on three public real-world datasets demonstrate that EDSH produces a superior performance in both accuracy and scalability over some existing cross-modal hashing methods.

Multifunctional photonic integrated circuit for diverse microwave signal generation, transmission and processing

Microwave photonics (MWP) studies the interaction between microwave and optical waves for the generation, transmission and processing of microwave signals (i.e., three key domains), taking advantages of broad bandwidth and low loss offered by modern photonics. Integrated MWP using photonic integrated circuits (PICs) can reach a compact, reliable and green implementation. Most PICs, however, are recently developed to perform one or more functions restricted inside a single domain. In this paper, as highly desired, a multifunctional PIC is proposed to cover the three key domains. The PIC is fabricated on InP platform by monolithically integrating four laser diodes and two modulators. Using the multifunctional PIC, seven fundamental functions across microwave signal generation, transmission and processing are demonstrated experimentally. Outdoor field trials for electromagnetic environment surveillance along an in-service high-speed railway are also performed. The success to such a PIC marks a key step forward for practical and massive MWP implementations.

Tunable Photonic Radiofrequency Filter with An Ultra-high Out-Of-Band Rejection

As radiofrequency filtering plays a vital role in electromagnetic devices and systems, recently photonic techniques have been intensively studied to implement radiofrequency filters to harness wide frequency coverage, large instantaneous bandwidth, low frequency-dependent loss, flexible tunability and strong immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, one crucial challenge facing the photonic radiofrequency filter (PRF) is the less impressive out-of-band rejection. Here, to the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate a tunable PRF with a record out-of-band rejection of 80 dB, which is 3 dB higher than the maximum value (~77 dB) reported so far, when incorporating highly selective polarization control and large narrow-band amplification enabled by stimulated Brillouin scattering effect. In particular, this record rejection is arduous to be achieved for a narrow passband (e.g., a few megahertz) and a high finesse in a PRF. Moreover, the proposed PRF is an active one capable of providing negligible insertion loss and even signal gain. Tunable central frequency ranging from 2.1 to 6.1 GHz is also demonstrated. The proposed PRF will provide an ultra-high noise or clutter suppression for harsh electromagnetic scenarios, particularly when room-temperature implementation and remote distribution are needed.

Conceptual Proposal: Frequency Offset Modulation for High-Efficiency Communications

Frequency offset modulation (FOM) is proposed as a new concept to provide both high energy efficiency and high spectral efficiency for communications. In the FOM system, an array of transmitters (TXs) is deployed and only one TX is activated for data transmission at any signaling time instance. The TX index distinguished by a very slight frequency offset among the entire occupied bandwidth is exploited to implicitly convey a bit unit without any power or signal radiation, saving the power and spectral resources. Moreover, the FOM is characterized by removing the stringent requirements on distinguishable spatial channels and perfect priori channel knowledge, while retaining the advantages of no inter-channel interference and no need of inter-antenna synchronization. In addition, a hybrid solution integrating the FOM and the spatial modulation is discussed to further improve the energy efficiency and spectral efficiency. Consequently, the FOM will be an enabling and green solution to support ever-increasing high-capacity data traffic in a variety of interdisciplinary fields.

Wide-open, high-resolution microwave/millimeter-wave Doppler frequency shift estimation using photonics technology

Today, wide-open, high-resolution Doppler frequency shift (DFS) estimation is essential for radar, microwave/millimeter-wave, and communication systems. Using photonics technology, an effective approach is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, providing a high-resolution and frequency-independent solution. In the approach consisting of two cascaded opto-electronic modulators, DFS between the transmitted microwave/ millimeter-wave signal and the received echo signal is mapped into a doubled spacing between two target optical sidebands. Subsequently, the DFS is then estimated through the spectrum analysis of a generated low-frequency electrical signal, with an improved resolution by a factor of 2. In experiments, DFSs from -90 to 90 KHz are successfully estimated for microwave/millimeter-wave signals at 10, 15, and 30 GHz, where estimation errors keep lower than +/- 5e-10 Hz. For radial velocity measurement, these results reveal a range from 0 to 900 m/s (0 to 450 m/s) and a resolution of 1e-11 m/s (5e-12 m/s) at 15-GHz (30-GHz) frequency band.
