CoAst: Validation-Free Contribution Assessment for Federated Learning based on Cross-Round Valuation

In the federated learning (FL) process, since the data held by each participant is different, it is necessary to figure out which participant has a higher contribution to the model performance. Effective contribution assessment can help motivate data owners to participate in the FL training. Research works in this field can be divided into two directions based on whether a validation dataset is required. Validation-based methods need to use representative validation data to measure the model accuracy, which is difficult to obtain in practical FL scenarios. Existing validation-free methods assess the contribution based on the parameters and gradients of local models and the global model in a single training round, which is easily compromised by the stochasticity of model training. In this work, we propose CoAst, a practical method to assess the FL participants' contribution without access to any validation data. The core idea of CoAst involves two aspects: one is to only count the most important part of model parameters through a weights quantization, and the other is a cross-round valuation based on the similarity between the current local parameters and the global parameter updates in several subsequent communication rounds. Extensive experiments show that CoAst has comparable assessment reliability to existing validation-based methods and outperforms existing validation-free methods.

Cognitive resilience: Unraveling the proficiency of image-captioning models to interpret masked visual content

This study explores the ability of Image Captioning (IC) models to decode masked visual content sourced from diverse datasets. Our findings reveal the IC model's capability to generate captions from masked images, closely resembling the original content. Notably, even in the presence of masks, the model adeptly crafts descriptive textual information that goes beyond what is observable in the original image-generated captions. While the decoding performance of the IC model experiences a decline with an increase in the masked region's area, the model still performs well when important regions of the image are not masked at high coverage.

Interaction tests with covariate-adaptive randomization

Treatment-covariate interaction tests are commonly applied by researchers to examine whether the treatment effect varies across patient subgroups defined by baseline characteristics. The objective of this study is to explore treatment-covariate interaction tests involving covariate-adaptive randomization. Without assuming a parametric data generating model, we investigate usual interaction tests and observe that they tend to be conservative: specifically, their limiting rejection probabilities under the null hypothesis do not exceed the nominal level and are typically strictly lower than it. To address this problem, we propose modifications to the usual tests to obtain corresponding valid tests. Moreover, we introduce a novel class of stratified-adjusted interaction tests that are simple, more powerful than the usual and modified tests, and broadly applicable to most covariate-adaptive randomization methods. The results are general to encompass two types of interaction tests: one involving stratification covariates and the other involving additional covariates that are not used for randomization. Our study clarifies the application of interaction tests in clinical trials and offers valuable tools for revealing treatment heterogeneity, crucial for advancing personalized medicine.

Biocompatible wearable touch panel based on ionically conductive organic hydrogels with anti-freezing, anti-dehydration, self-healing, and underwater adhesion properties

Next-generation touch panels are poised to benefit from the use of stretchable and transparent soft ionic conductors, but these materials face several challenges in practical application, including structural damage, loss of functionality, and device stratification, particularly in extreme environments. To address these challenges, in this work, a biocompatible, transparent, self-adhesive gelatin-PAA-based organic hydrogel (PC-OH) was developed, the gel can adhere to the skin in both air and underwater conditions and also anti-freezing, anti-drying, fast self-healable (with a self-healing time of less than 4s in air and underwater), long-term stable for up to 7 days at a wide range of temperatures, highly stretchable, and conductive over a wide temperature range. Using this organic hydrogel, an organic hydrogel-based surface capacitive touch system has been developed that can detect finger touch position in wet environments and over a wide temperature range, demonstrating its ability to sense finger touch position. The wearable touch panel has been successfully demonstrated through the ability to write text, draw figures, and play electronic games, showcasing its potential use in various applications. This breakthrough has significant implications for the development of next-generation touch panels, particularly in the healthcare, sports, and entertainment industries, where reliable and versatile human-machine interfaces are essential.

Explaining the unexplainable: leveraging extremal dependence to characterize the 2021 Pacific Northwest heatwave

In late June, 2021, a devastating heatwave affected the US Pacific Northwest and western Canada, breaking numerous all-time temperature records by large margins and directly causing hundreds of fatalities. The observed 2021 daily maximum temperature across much of the U.S. Pacific Northwest exceeded upper bound estimates obtained from single-station temperature records even after accounting for anthropogenic climate change, meaning that the event could not have been predicted under standard univariate extreme value analysis assumptions. In this work, we utilize a flexible spatial extremes model that considers all stations across the Pacific Northwest domain and accounts for the fact that many stations simultaneously experience extreme temperatures. Our analysis incorporates the effects of anthropogenic forcing and natural climate variability in order to better characterize time-varying changes in the distribution of daily temperature extremes. We show that greenhouse gas forcing, drought conditions and large-scale atmospheric modes of variability all have significant impact on summertime maximum temperatures in this region. Our model represents a significant improvement over corresponding single-station analysis, and our posterior medians of the upper bounds are able to anticipate more than 96% of the observed 2021 high station temperatures after properly accounting for extremal dependence.

Asymptotic posterior normality of the generalized extreme value distribution

The univariate generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution is the most commonly used tool for analyzing the properties of rare events. The ever greater utilization of Bayesian methods for extreme value analysis warrants detailed theoretical investigation, which has thus far been underdeveloped. Even the most basic asymptotic results are difficult to obtain because the GEV fails to satisfy standard regularity conditions. Here, we prove that the posterior distribution of the GEV parameter vector, given $n$ independent and identically distributed samples, converges in distribution to a trivariate normal distribution. The proof necessitates analyzing integrals of the GEV likelihood function over the entire parameter space, which requires considerable care because the support of the GEV density depends on the parameters in complicated ways.

Uniqueness and global optimality of the maximum likelihood estimator for the generalized extreme value distribution

The three-parameter generalized extreme value distribution arises from classical univariate extreme value theory and is in common use for analyzing the far tail of observed phenomena. Curiously, important asymptotic properties of likelihood-based estimation under this standard model have yet to be established. In this paper, we formally prove that the maximum likelihood estimator is global and unique. An interesting secondary result entails the uniform consistency of a class of limit relations in a tight neighborhood of the shape parameter.

Input Perturbation: A New Paradigm between Central and Local Differential Privacy

Traditionally, there are two models on differential privacy: the central model and the local model. The central model focuses on the machine learning model and the local model focuses on the training data. In this paper, we study the \textit{input perturbation} method in differentially private empirical risk minimization (DP-ERM), preserving privacy of the central model. By adding noise to the original training data and training with the `perturbed data', we achieve ($ε$,$δ$)-differential privacy on the final model, along with some kind of privacy on the original data. We observe that there is an interesting connection between the local model and the central model: the perturbation on the original data causes the perturbation on the gradient, and finally the model parameters. This observation means that our method builds a bridge between local and central model, protecting the data, the gradient and the model simultaneously, which is more superior than previous central methods. Detailed theoretical analysis and experiments show that our method achieves almost the same (or even better) performance as some of the best previous central methods with more protections on privacy, which is an attractive result. Moreover, we extend our method to a more general case: the loss function satisfies the Polyak-Lojasiewicz condition, which is more general than strong convexity, the constraint on the loss function in most previous work.

Hierarchical Transformed Scale Mixtures for Flexible Modeling of Spatial Extremes on Datasets with Many Locations

Flexible spatial models that allow transitions between tail dependence classes have recently appeared in the literature. However, inference for these models is computationally prohibitive, even in moderate dimensions, due to the necessity of repeatedly evaluating the multivariate Gaussian distribution function. In this work, we attempt to achieve truly high-dimensional inference for extremes of spatial processes, while retaining the desirable flexibility in the tail dependence structure, by modifying an established class of models based on scale mixtures Gaussian processes. We show that the desired extremal dependence properties from the original models are preserved under the modification, and demonstrate that the corresponding Bayesian hierarchical model does not involve the expensive computation of the multivariate Gaussian distribution function. We fit our model to exceedances of a high threshold, and perform coverage analyses and cross-model checks to validate its ability to capture different types of tail characteristics. We use a standard adaptive Metropolis algorithm for model fitting, and further accelerate the computation via parallelization and Rcpp. Lastly, we apply the model to a dataset of a fire threat index on the Great Plains region of the US, which is vulnerable to massively destructive wildfires. We find that the joint tail of the fire threat index exhibits a decaying dependence structure that cannot be captured by limiting extreme value models.

Directional radiation of sound waves by a subwavelength source

We propose and experimentally achieve a directional dipole field radiated by an omnidirectional monopole source enclosed in a subwavelength structure of acoustically hybrid resonances. The whole structure has its every dimension at an order smaller than the sound wavelength. The significance is that the radiation efficiency is up to 2.3 of the radiation by traditional dipole consisting of two out-of-phase monopoles in the same space. This study eventually takes an essential step towards solving the long-existing barrier of inefficient radiation of directional sound waves in low frequencies, and inspires the ultimate radiation of arbitrary multipoles or even a highly directional beam by a monopole in limited spaces.

Oscillation-free method for semilinear diffusion equations under noisy initial conditions

Noise in initial conditions from measurement errors can create unwanted oscillations which propagate in numerical solutions. We present a technique of prohibiting such oscillation errors when solving initial-boundary-value problems of semilinear diffusion equations. Symmetric Strang splitting is applied to the equation for solving the linear diffusion and nonlinear remainder separately. An oscillation-free scheme is developed for overcoming any oscillatory behavior when numerically solving the linear diffusion portion. To demonstrate the ills of stable oscillations, we compare our method using a weighted implicit Euler scheme to the Crank-Nicolson method. The oscillation-free feature and stability of our method are analyzed through a local linearization. The accuracy of our oscillation-free method is proved and its usefulness is further verified through solving a Fisher-type equation where oscillation-free solutions are successfully produced in spite of random errors in the initial conditions.
