Large asymmetric anomalous Nernst effect in the antiferromagnet SrIr$_{0.8}$Sn$_{0.2}$O$_3$

A large anomalous Nernst effect is essential for thermoelectric energy harvesting in the transverse geometry without external magnetic field. It is often connected with anomalous Hall effect, especially when electronic Berry curvature is believed to be the driving force. This approach implicitly assumes the same symmetry for the Nernst and Hall coefficients, which is however not necessarily true. Here we report a large anomalous Nernst effect in antiferromagnetic SrIr$_{0.8}$Sn$_{0.2}$O$_3$ that defies the antisymmetric constraint on the anomalous Hall effect imposed by the Onsager reciprocal relation. The observed spontaneous Nernst thermopower quickly reaches the sub-$\mu$V/K level below the N\'eel transition around 250 K, which is comparable with many topological antiferromagnetic semimetals and far excels other magnetic oxides. Our analysis indicates that the coexistence of significant symmetric and antisymmetric contributions plays a key role, pointing to the importance of extracting both contributions and a new pathway to enhanced anomalous Nernst effect for transverse thermoelectrics

High-Pressure Tuning of Electrical Transport in Freestanding Oxide Films

Electrical transport in oxide thin films under high pressure remains largely unexplored due to the lack of a universal experimental strategy. Here we develop an approach that enables high-pressure transport measurements in freestanding oxide films by enhancing their mechanical robustness and integrating them with nanoscale high-pressure devices. As a demonstration, we investigate the resistivity of perovskite SrIrO3 films under hydrostatic pressure and uncover a pressure-driven semimetal-insulator transition near 2.5 GPa, followed by an insulator-metal transition around 9 GPa. In the monolayer limit, SrIrO3 remains insulating and robust against pressure up to 5.5 GPa. The contrasting pressure-dependent phase diagrams of three- and two-dimensional iridates reveal a strong interplay between dimensionality and hydrostatic pressure in correlated oxides. Our work establishes a general platform for exploring pressure-driven phenomena in low-dimensional quantum materials.

Correlated Quantum Phenomena of Spin-Orbit Coupled Perovskite Oxide Heterostructures: Cases of SrRuO3 and SrIrO3-Based Artificial Superlattices

Unexpected, yet useful functionalities emerge when two or more materials merge coherently. Artificial oxide superlattices realize atomic and crystal structures that are not available in nature, thus providing controllable correlated quantum phenomena. This review focuses on 4d and 5d oxide superlattices, in which the spin-orbit coupling plays a significant role compared with conventional 3d oxide superlattices. Modulations in crystal structures with octahedral distortion, phonon engineering, electronic structures, spin orderings, and dimensionality control are discussed for 4d oxide superlattices. Atomic and magnetic structures, Jeff = 1/2 pseudospin and charge fluctuations, and the integration of topology and correlation are discussed for 5d oxide superlattices. This review provides insights into how correlated quantum phenomena arise from the deliberate design of superlattice structures that give birth to novel functionalities.

Extraordinary magnetic response of an anisotropic 2D antiferromagnet via site-dilution

A prominent character of two-dimensional magnetic systems is the enhanced spin fluctuations, which however reduce the ordering temperature. Here we report that a magnetic field of only one-thousandth of the Heisenberg superexchange interaction can induce a crossover, which for practical purposes is the effective ordering transition, at temperatures about 6 times of the Neel transition in a site-diluted two-dimensional anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet. Such a strong magnetic response is enabled because the system directly enters the antiferromagnetically ordered state from the isotropic disordered state skipping the intermediate anisotropic stage. The underlying mechanism is achieved on a pseudospin-half square lattice realized in the [(SrIrO3)1/(SrTiO3)2] superlattice thin film that is designed to linearly couple the staggered magnetization to external magnetic fields by virtue of the rotational symmetry-preserving Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction. Our model analysis shows that the skipping of the anisotropic regime despite the finite anisotropy is due to the enhanced isotropic fluctuations under moderate dilution.

Unique futures in China: studys on volatility spillover effects of ferrous metal futures

Ferrous metal futures have become unique commodity futures with Chinese characteristics. Due to the late listing time, it has received less attention from scholars. Our research focuses on the volatility spillover effects, defined as the intensity of price volatility in financial instruments. We use DCC-GARCH, BEKK-GARCH, and DY(2012) index methods to conduct empirical tests on the volatility spillover effects of the Chinese ferrous metal futures market and other parts of the Chinese commodity futures market, as well as industries related to the steel industry chain in stock markets. It can be seen that there is a close volatility spillover relationship between ferrous metal futures and nonferrous metal futures. Energy futures and chemical futures have a significant transmission effect on the fluctuations of ferrous metals. In addition, ferrous metal futures have a significant spillover effect on the stock index of the steel industry, real estate industry, building materials industry, machinery equipment industry, and household appliance industry. Studying the volatility spillover effect of the ferrous metal futures market can reveal the operating laws of this field and provide ideas and theoretical references for investors to hedge their risks. It shows that the ferrous metal futures market has an essential role as a "barometer" for the Chinese commodity futures market and the stock market.

Quasi-2D anomalous Hall Mott insulator of topologically engineered Jeff =1/2 electrons

We investigate an experimental toy-model system of a pseudospin-half square-lattice Hubbard Hamiltonian in [(SrIrO3)1/(CaTiO3)1] to include both nontrivial complex hopping and moderate electronic correlation. While the former induces electronic Berry phases as anticipated from the weak-coupling limit, the later stabilizes an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott insulator ground state in analogous to the strong-coupling limit. Their combined results in the real system are found to be an anomalous Hall effect with a non-monotonic temperature dependence due to the self-competition of the electron-hole pairing in the Mott state, and an exceptionally large Ising anisotropy that is captured as a giant magnon gap beyond the superexchange approach. The unusual phenomena highlight the rich interplay of electronic topology and electronic correlation in the intermediate-coupling regime that is largely unexplored and challenging in theoretical modelling.

Reconciling monolayer and bilayer $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ square lattices in hybrid oxide superlattice

The number of atomic layers confined in a two-dimensional structure is crucial for the electronic and magnetic properties. Single-layer and bilayer $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ square lattices are well-known examples where the presence of the extra layer turns the XY-anisotropy to the $c$-axis anisotropy. We report on experimental realization of a hybrid SrIrO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice that integrates monolayer and bilayer square lattices in one layered structure. By synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resonant x-ray magnetic scattering, magnetization, and resistivity measurements, we found that the hybrid superlattice exhibits properties that are distinct from both the single-layer and bilayer systems and cannot be explained by a simple addition of them. In particular, the entire hybrid superlattice orders simultaneously through a single antiferromagnetic transition at temperatures similar to the bilayer system but with all the $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ moments mainly pointing in the $ab$-plane similar to the single-layer system. The results show that bringing monolayer and bilayer with orthogonal properties in proximity to each other in a hybrid superlattice structure is a powerful way to stabilize a unique state not obtainable in a uniform structure.

Manipulate the Electronic State of Mott Iridate Superlattice through Protonation Induced Electron-Filling

Spin-orbit-coupled Mott iridates show great similarity with parent compounds of superconducting cuprates, attracting extensive research interests especially for their electron-doped states. However, previous experiments are largely limited within a small doping range due to the absence of effective dopants, and therefore the electron-doped phase diagram remains elusive. Here we utilize an ionic-liquid-gating induced protonation method to achieve electron-doping into a 5d Mott-insulator built with SrIrO3/SrTiO3 superlattice, and achieve a systematic mapping of its electron-doped phase diagram with the evolution of the iridium valence state from 4+ to 3+, equivalent to doping of one electron per iridium ion. Along increasing doping level, the parent Mott-insulator is first turned into a localized metallic state with gradually suppressed magnetic ordering, and then further evolved into a nonmagnetic band insulating state. This work forms an important step forward for the study of electron-doped Mott iridate systems, and the strategy of manipulating the band filling in an artificially designed superlattice structure can be readily extended into other systems with more exotic states to explore.

Strain-modulated Slater-Mott crossover of pseudospin-half square-lattice in (SrIrO3)1/ (SrTiO3)1 superlattices

We report on the epitaxial strain-driven electronic and antiferromagnetic modulations of a pseudospin-half square lattice realized in superlattices of (SrIrO3)1/(SrTiO3)1. With increasing compressive strain, we find the low-temperature insulating behavior to be strongly suppressed with a corresponding systematic reduction of both the Neel temperature and the staggered moment. However, despite such a suppression, the system remains weakly insulating above the Neel transition. The emergence of metallicity is observed under large compressive strain but only at temperatures far above the N\'eel transition. These behaviors are characteristics of the Slater-Mott crossover regime, providing a unique experimental model system of the spin-half Hubbard Hamiltonian with a tunable intermediate coupling strength.

Anomalous Magnetoresistance in Centrosymmetric Skyrmion-Lattice Magnet Gd2PdSi3

We performed a systematic study of the temperature- and field-dependence of magnetization and resistivity of Gd2PdSi3, which is a centrosymmetric skyrmion crystal. While the magnetization behavior is consistent with the reported phase diagram based on susceptibility, we show that a phase diagram can also be constructed based on the anomalous magnetoresistance with one-to-one correspondence among all the features. In addition, the crossover boundary into the field-induced ferromagnetic state is also identified. Our results suggest that the ferromagnetic spin fluctuations above the N\'eel temperature play a key role in the high sensitivity of the resistivity anomalies to magnetic field, pointing to the rich interplay of different magnetic correlations at zero and finite wave vectors underlying the skyrmion lattice in this frustrated itinerant magnet.

Epitaxial growth and antiferromagnetism of Sn-substituted perovskite iridate SrIr$_{0.8}$Sn$_{0.2}$O$_3$

5d iridates have shown vast emergent phenomena due to a strong interplay among its lattice, charge and spin degrees of freedom, because of which the potential in spintronic application of the thin-film form is highly leveraged. Here we have epitaxially stabilized perovskite SrIr$_{0.8}$Sn$_{0.2}$O$_3$ on [001] SrTiO$_3$ substrates through pulsed laser deposition and systematically characterized the structural, electronic and magnetic properties. Physical properties measurements unravel an insulating ground state with a weak ferromagnetism in the compressively strained epitaxial film. The octahedral rotation pattern is identified by synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resolving a mix of $a^+b^-c^-$ and $a^-b^+c^-$ domains. X-ray magnetic resonant scattering directly demonstrates a G-type antiferromagnetic structure of the magnetic order and the spin canting nature of the weak ferromagnetism.

Anomalous Magnetoresistance due to Longitudinal Spin Fluctuations in a Jeff = 1/2 Mott Semiconductor

As a hallmark of electronic correlation, spin-charge interplay underlies many emergent phenomena in doped Mott insulators, such as high-temperature superconductivity, whereas the half-filled parent state is usually electronically frozen with an antiferromagnetic order that resists external control. We report on the observation of a new positive magnetoresistance that probes the staggered susceptibility of a pseudospin-half square-lattice Mott insulator built as an artificial SrIrO3/SrTiO3 superlattice. Its size is particularly large in the high-temperature insulating paramagnetic phase near the N\'eel transition. This novel magnetoresistance originates from a collective charge response to the large longitudinal spin fluctuations under a linear coupling between the external magnetic field and the staggered magnetization enabled by strong spin-orbit interaction. Our results demonstrate a magnetic control of the binding energy of the fluctuating particle-hole pairs in the Slater-Mott crossover regime analogous to the BCS-to-Bose-Einstein condensation crossover of ultracold-superfluids.

Epitaxial stabilization of Sr3Ir2O7 thin films

Ruddlesden-popper type Srn+1IrnO3n+1 compound is a major focus of condensed matter physics where the subtle balance between electron-electron correlation, spin-orbit interaction and crystal field effect brings a host of emergent phenomena. While it is understandable that a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating state with an easy-plane anisotropy is developed in Sr2IrO4 as the 2D limit of the series, it is intriguing that bilayer Sr3Ir2O7, with slightly higher effective dimensionality, stabilizes c-axis collinear antiferromagnetism. This also renders Sr3Ir2O7 as a unique playground to study exotic physics near a critical spin transition point. However, the epitaxial growth of the Sr3Ir2O7 is still a challenging task because of the narrow growth window. In our research, we have studied the thermodynamic process during synthesis of Sr3Ir2O7 thin films. We successfully expanded the synthesis window by mapping out the relation between the thin film sample crystal structure and gas pressure. Our work thus provides a more accessible avenue to stabilize metastable materials.

Decoupling carrier concentration and electron-phonon coupling in oxide heterostructures observed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report the observation of multiple phonon satellite features in ultra thin superlattices of form $n$SrIrO$_3$/$m$SrTiO$_3$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. As the values of $n$ and $m$ vary the energy loss spectra show a systematic evolution in the relative intensity of the phonon satellites. Using a closed-form solution for the cross section, we extract the variation in the electron-phonon coupling strength as a function of $n$ and $m$. Combined with the negligible carrier doping into the SrTiO$_3$ layers, these results indicate that tuning of the electron-phonon coupling can be effectively decoupled from doping. This work showcases both a feasible method to extract the electron-phonon coupling in superlattices and unveils a potential route for tuning this coupling which is often associated with superconductivity in SrTiO$_3$-based systems.

Giant magnetic response of a two-dimensional antiferromagnet

A fundamental difference between antiferromagnets and ferromagnets is the lack of linear coupling to a uniform magnetic field due to the staggered order parameter. Such coupling is possible via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction but at the expense of reduced antiferromagnetic (AFM) susceptibility due to the canting-induced spin anisotropy. We solve this long-standing problem with a top-down approach that utilizes spin-orbit coupling in the presence of a hidden SU(2) symmetry. We demonstrate giant AFM responses to sub-Tesla external fields by exploiting the extremely strong two-dimensional critical fluctuations preserved under a symmetry-invariant exchange anisotropy, which is built into a square-lattice artificially synthesized as a superlattice of SrIrO3 and SrTiO3. The observed field-induced logarithmic increase of the ordering temperature enables highly efficient control of the AFM order. As antiferromagnets promise to afford switching speed and storage security far beyond ferromagnets, our symmetry-invariant approach unleashes the great potential of functional antiferromagnets.

Novel spin-orbit coupling driven emergent states in iridate-based heterostructures

Recent years have seen many examples of how the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) present in iridates can stabilize new emergent states that are difficult or impossible to realize in more conventional materials. In this review we outline a representative set of studies detailing how heterostructures based on Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) and perovskite iridates can be used to access yet more novel physics. Beginning with a short synopsis of iridate thin film growth, the effects of the heterostructure morphology on the RP iridates including Sr2IrO4 and SrIrO3 are discussed. Example studies explore the effects of epitaxial strain, laser-excitation to access transient states, topological semimetallicity in SrIrO3, 2D magnetism in artificial RP iridates, and interfacial magnetic coupling between iridate and neighboring layers. Taken together, these works show the fantastic potential for controlled engineering of novel quantum phenomena in iridate heterostructures.

Magnetism in artificial Ruddlesden-Popper iridates leveraged by structural distortions

We report on the tuning of magnetic interactions in superlattices composed of single and bilayer SrIrO$_3$ inter-spaced with SrTiO$_3$. Magnetic scattering shows predominately $c$-axis antiferromagnetic orientation of the magnetic moments for the bilayer justifying these systems as viable artificial analogues of the bulk Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates. Magnon gaps are observed in both superlattices, with the magnitude of the gap in the bilayer being reduced to nearly half that in its bulk structural analogue, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. We assign this to modifications in the anisotropic exchange driven by bending of the $c$-axis Ir-O-Ir bond and subsequent local environment changes, as detected by x-ray diffraction and modeled using spin wave theory. These findings explain how even subtle structural modulations driven by heterostructuring in iridates are leveraged by spin orbit coupling to drive large changes in the magnetic interactions.
