Pattern-Division Multiplexing for Continuous-Aperture MIMO

In recent years, continuous-aperture multiple-input multiple-output (CAP-MIMO) is reinvestigated to achieve improved communication performance with limited antenna apertures. Unlike the classical MIMO composed of discrete antennas, CAP-MIMO has a continuous antenna surface, which is expected to generate any current distribution (i.e., pattern) and induce controllable spatial electromagnetic waves. In this way, the information can be modulated on the electromagnetic waves, which makes it promising to approach the ultimate capacity of finite apertures. The pattern design for CAP-MIMO is the key factor to determine the communication performance, but it has not been well studied in the literature. In this paper, we propose the pattern-division multiplexing to design the patterns for CAP-MIMO. Specifically, we first derive the system model of a typical multi-user CAP-MIMO system, which allows us to formulate the sum-rate maximization problem. Then, we propose a general pattern-division multiplexing technique to transform the design of continuous pattern functions to the design of their projection lengths on finite orthogonal bases. Based on this technique, we further propose a pattern design scheme to solve the formulated sum-rate maximization problem. Simulation results show that, the sum-rate achieved by the proposed scheme is about 260% higher than that achieved by the benchmark scheme.

Delay-Phase Precoding for Wideband THz Massive MIMO

Benefiting from tens of GHz bandwidth, terahertz (THz) communication is considered to be a promising technology to provide ultra-high speed data rates for future 6G wireless systems. To compensate for the serious propagation attenuation of THz signals, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with hybrid precoding can be utilized to generate directional beams with high array gains. However, the standard hybrid precoding architecture based on frequency-independent phase-shifters cannot cope with the beam split effect in THz massive MIMO systems, where the directional beams will split into different physical directions at different subcarrier frequencies. The beam split effect will result in a serious array gain loss across the entire bandwidth, which has not been well investigated in THz massive MIMO systems. In this paper, we first reveal and quantify the seriousness of the beam split effect in THz massive MIMO systems by analyzing the array gain loss it causes. Then, we propose a new precoding architecture called delay-phase precoding (DPP) to mitigate this effect. Specifically, the proposed DPP introduces a time delay network as a new precoding layer between radio-frequency chains and phase-shifters in the standard hybrid precoding architecture. In this way, conventional phase-controlled analog beamforming can be converted into delay-phase controlled analog beamforming. Unlike frequency-independent phase shifts, the time delay network introduced in the DPP can realize frequency-dependent phase shifts, which can be designed to generate frequency-dependent beams towards the target physical direction across the entire THz bandwidth. Due to the joint control of delay and phase, the proposed DPP can significantly relieve the array gain loss caused by the beam split effect. Furthermore, we propose a hardware structure by using true-time-delayers to realize the concept of DPP.

Channel Estimation for Extremely Large-Scale MIMO: Far-Field or Near-Field?

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) with hybrid precoding is a promising technique to meet the high data rate requirements for future 6G communications. To realize efficient hybrid precoding, it is essential to obtain accurate channel state information. Existing channel estimation algorithms with low pilot overhead heavily rely on the channel sparsity in the angle domain, which is achieved by the classical far-field planar wavefront assumption. However, due to the non-negligible near-field spherical wavefront property in XL-MIMO systems, this channel sparsity in the angle domain is not available anymore, and thus existing far-field channel estimation schemes will suffer from severe performance loss. To address this problem, in this paper we study the near-field channel estimation by exploiting the polar-domain sparse representation of the near-field XL-MIMO channel. Specifically, unlike the classical angle-domain representation that only considers the angle information of the channel, we propose a new polar-domain representation, which simultaneously accounts for both the angle and distance information. In this way, the near-field channel also exhibits sparsity in the polar domain. By exploiting the channel sparsity in the polar domain, we propose the on-grid and off-grid near-field channel estimation schemes for XL-MIMO. Firstly, an on-grid polar-domain simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit (P-SOMP) algorithm is proposed to efficiently estimate the near-field channel. Furthermore, to solve the resolution limitation of the on-grid P-SOMP algorithm, an off-grid polar-domain simultaneous iterative gridless weighted (P-SIGW) algorithm is proposed to improve the estimation accuracy, where the parameters of the near-field channel are directly estimated. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Finite-Time Capacity: Making Exceed-Shannon Possible?

Shannon-Hartley theorem can accurately calculate the channel capacity when the signal observation time is infinite. However, the calculation of finite-time capacity, which remains unknown, is essential for guiding the design of practical communication systems. In this paper, we investigate the capacity between two correlated Gaussian processes within a finite-time observation window. We first derive the finite-time capacity by providing a limit expression. Then we numerically compute the maximum transmission rate within a single finite-time window. We reveal that the number of bits transmitted per second within the finite-time window can exceed the classical Shannon capacity, which is called as the Exceed-Shannon phenomenon. Furthermore, we derive a finite-time capacity formula under a typical signal autocorrelation case by utilizing the Mercer expansion of trace class operators, and reveal the connection between the finite-time capacity problem and the operator theory. Finally, we analytically prove the existence of the Exceed-Shannon phenomenon in this typical case, and demonstrate the achievability of the finite-time capacity and its compatibility with the classical Shannon capacity.

Beam Squint in Ultra-wideband mmWave Systems: RF Lens Array vs. Phase-Shifter-Based Array

In this article, we discuss the potential of radio frequency (RF) lens for ultra-wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems. In terms of the beam squint, we compare the proposed RF lens antenna with the phase shifter-based array for hybrid beamforming. To reduce the complexities for fully digital beamforming, researchers have come up with RF lens-based hybrid beamforming. The use of mmWave systems, however, causes an increase in bandwidth, which gives rise to the beam squint phenomenon. We first find the causative factors for beam squint in the dielectric RF lens antenna. Based on the beamforming gain at each frequency, we verify that, in a specific situation, RF lens can be free of the beam squint effect. We use 3D electromagnetic analysis software to numerically interpret the beam squint of each antenna type. Based on the results, we present the degraded spectral efficiency by system-level simulations with 3D indoor ray tracing. Finally, to verify our analysis, we fabricate an actual RF lens antenna and demonstrate the real performance using a mmWave, NI PXIe, software-defined radio system.

Channel Estimation for Extremely Large-Scale Massive MIMO: Far-Field, Near-Field, or Hybrid-Field?

Extremely large-scale massive MIMO (XL-MIMO) is a promising technique for future 6G communications. However, existing far-field or near-field channel model mismatches the hybrid-field channel feature in the practical XL-MIMO system. Thus, existing far-field and near-field channel estimation schemes cannot be directly used to accurately estimate the hybrid-field XL-MIMO channel. To solve this problem, we propose an efficient hybrid-field channel estimation scheme by accurately modeling the XL-MIMO channel.Specifically,we firstly reveal the hybrid-field channel feature of the XL-MIMO channel, where different scatters may be in far-field or near-field region. Then, we propose a hybrid-field channel model to capture this feature, which contains both the far-field and near-field path components. Finally, we propose a hybrid-field channel estimation scheme, where the far-field and near-field path components are respectively estimated. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme performs better than existing schemes.

Compact User-Specific Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Uplink Transmission

Large-scale antenna arrays employed by the base station (BS) constitute an essential next-generation communications technique. However, due to the constraints of size, cost, and power consumption, it is usually considered unrealistic to use a large-scale antenna array at the user side. Inspired by the emerging technique of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), we firstly propose the concept of user-side RIS (US-RIS) for facilitating the employment of a large-scale antenna array at the user side in a cost- and energy-efficient way. In contrast to the existing employments of RIS, which belong to the family of base-station-side RISs (BSS-RISs), the US-RIS concept by definition facilitates the employment of RIS at the user side for the first time. This is achieved by conceiving a multi-layer structure to realize a compact form-factor. Furthermore, our theoretical results demonstrate that, in contrast to the existing single-layer structure, where only the phase of the signal reflected from RIS can be adjusted, the amplitude of the signal penetrating multi-layer US-RIS can also be partially controlled, which brings about a new degree of freedom (DoF) for beamformer design that can be beneficially exploited for performance enhancement. In addition, based on the proposed multi-layer US-RIS, we formulate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) maximization problem of US-RIS-aided communications. Due to the non-convexity of the problem introduced by this multi-layer structure, we propose a multi-layer transmit beamformer design relying on an iterative algorithm for finding the optimal solution by alternately updating each variable. Finally, our simulation results verify the superiority of the proposed multi-layer US-RIS as a compact realization of a large-scale antenna array at the user side for uplink transmission.

Codebook Design and Beam Training for Extremely Large-Scale RIS: Far-Field or Near-Field?

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can improve the capacity of the wireless communication system by providing the extra link between the base station (BS) and the user. In order to resist the "multiplicative fading" effect, RIS is more likely to develop into extremely large-scale RIS (XL-RIS) for future 6G communications. Beam training is an effective way to acquire channel state information (CSI) for the XL-RIS assisted system. Existing beam training schemes rely on the far-field codebook, which is designed based on the far-field channel model. However, due to the large aperture of XL-RIS, the user is more likely to be in the near-field region of XL-RIS. The far-field codebook mismatches the near-field channel model. Thus, the existing far-field beam training scheme will cause severe performance loss in the XL-RIS assisted near-field communications. To solve this problem, we propose the efficient near-field beam training schemes by designing the near-field codebook to match the near-field channel model. Specifically, we firstly design the near-field codebook by considering the near-field cascaded array steering vector of XL-RIS. Then, the optimal codeword for XL-RIS is obtained by the exhausted training procedure between the XL-RIS and the user. In order to reduce the beam training overhead, we further design a hierarchical near-field codebook and propose the corresponding hierarchical near-field beam training scheme, where different levels of sub-codebooks are searched in turn with reduced codebook size. Simulation results show the two proposed near-field beam training schemes both perform better than the existing far-field beam training scheme. Particulary, the hierarchical near-field beam training scheme can greatly reduce the beam training overhead with acceptable performance loss.

Wideband Beam Tracking in THz Massive MIMO Systems

Terahertz (THz) massive multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) has been considered as one of the promising technologies for future 6G wireless communications. It is essential to obtain channel information by beam tracking scheme to track mobile users in THz massive MIMO systems. However, the existing beam tracking schemes designed for narrowband systems with the traditional hybrid precoding structure suffer from a severe performance loss caused by the beam split effect, and thus cannot be directly applied to wideband THz massive MIMO systems. To solve this problem, in this paper we propose a beam zooming based beam tracking scheme by considering the recently proposed delay-phase precoding structure for THz massive MIMO. Specifically, we firstly prove the beam zooming mechanism to flexibly control the angular coverage of frequencydependent beams over the whole bandwidth, which can be realized by the elaborate design of time delays in the delay-phase precoding structure. Then, based on this beam zooming mechanism, we propose to track multiple user physical directions simultaneously in each time slot by generating multiple beams. The angular coverage of these beams is flexibly zoomed to adapt to the potential variation range of the user physical direction. After several time slots, the base station is able to obtain the exact user physical direction by finding out the beam with the largest user received power. Unlike traditional schemes where only one frequency-independent beam can be usually generated by one radio-frequency chain, the proposed beam zooming based beam tracking scheme can simultaneously track multiple user physical directions by using multiple frequency-dependent beams generated by one radio-frequency chain. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed scheme can achieve the near-optimal achievable sum-rate performance with low beam training overhead.

Wideband Channel Estimation for THz Massive MIMO

Terahertz (THz) communication is considered to be a promising technology for future 6G network. To overcome the severe attenuation and relieve the high power consumption, massive MIMO with hybrid precoding has been widely considered for THz communication. However, accurate wideband channel estimation is challenging in THz massive MIMO systems. The existing wideband channel estimation schemes based on the ideal assumption of common sparse channel support will suffer from a severe performance loss due to the beam split effect. In this paper, we propose a beam split pattern detection based channel estimation scheme to realize reliable wideband channel estimation. Specifically, a comprehensive analysis on the angle-domain sparse structure of the wideband channel is provided by considering the beam split effect. Based on the analysis, we define a series of index sets called as beam split patterns, which are proved to have a one-to-one match to different physical channel directions. Inspired by this one-to-one match, we propose to estimate the physical channel direction by exploiting beam split patterns at first. Then, the sparse channel supports at different subcarriers can be obtained by utilizing a support detection window. This support detection window is generated by expanding the beam split pattern which is determined by the obtained physical channel direction. The above estimation procedure will be repeated path by path until all path components are estimated. The proposed scheme exploits the wideband channel property implied by the beam split effect, which can significantly improve the channel estimation accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is able to achieve higher accuracy than existing schemes.

Nonexistence of a Universal Algorithm for Traveling Salesman Problems in Constructive Mathematics

Proposed initially from a practical circumstance, the traveling salesman problem caught the attention of numerous economists, computer scientists, and mathematicians. These theorists were instead intrigued by seeking a systemic way to find the optimal route. Many attempts have been made along the way and all concluded the nonexistence of a general algorithm that determines optimal solution to all traveling salesman problems alike. In this study, we present proof for the nonexistence of such an algorithm for both asymmetric (with oriented roads) and symmetric (with unoriented roads) traveling salesman problems in the setup of constructive mathematics.

A joint precoding framework for wideband reconfigurable intelligent surface-aided cell-free network

Thanks to the strong ability against the inter-cell interference, cell-free network is considered as a promising technique to improve network capacity. However, further capacity improvement requires to deploy more base stations (BSs) with high cost and power consumption. To address this issue, inspired by the recently developed reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technique, we propose the concept of RIS-aided cell-free network to improve the capacity with low cost and power consumption. The key idea is to replace some of the required BSs by low-cost and energy-efficient RISs. Then, in a wideband RIS-aided cell-free network, we formulate the problem of joint precoding design at BSs and RISs to maximize the network capacity. Due to the non-convexity and high complexity of the formulated problem, we develop an alternating optimization framework to solve this challenging problem. In particular, we decouple this problem via fractional programming, and solve the subproblems alternatively. Note that most of the scenarios considered in existing works are special cases of the general scenario studied in this paper, and the proposed joint precoding framework can serve as a general solution to maximize the capacity in most existing RIS-aided scenarios. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that, compared with the conventional cell-free network, the network capacity under the proposed scheme can be improved significantly.

Channel Estimation for RIS Assisted Wireless Communications: Part I -- Fundamentals, Solutions, and Future Opportunities

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with low hardware cost and energy consumption has been recognized as a potential technique for future 6G communications to enhance coverage and capacity. To achieve this goal, accurate channel state information (CSI) in RIS assisted wireless communication system is essential for the joint beamforming at the base station (BS) and the RIS. However, channel estimation is challenging, since a large number of passive RIS elements cannot transmit, receive, or process signals. In the first part of this invited paper, we provide an overview of the fundamentals, solutions, and future opportunities of channel estimation in the RIS assisted wireless communication system. It is noted that a new channel estimation scheme with low pilot overhead will be provided in the second part of this paper.

Channel Estimation for RIS Assisted Wireless Communications: Part II -- An Improved Solution Based on Double-Structured Sparsity

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can manipulate the wireless communication environment by controlling the coefficients of RIS elements. However, due to the large number of passive RIS elements without signal processing capability, channel estimation in RIS assisted wireless communication system requires high pilot overhead. In the second part of this invited paper, we propose to exploit the double-structured sparsity of the angular cascaded channels among users to reduce the pilot overhead. Specifically, we first reveal the double-structured sparsity, i.e., different angular cascaded channels for different users enjoy the completely common non-zero rows and the partially common non-zero columns. By exploiting this double-structured sparsity, we further propose the double-structured orthogonal matching pursuit (DS-OMP) algorithm, where the completely common non-zero rows and the partially common non-zero columns are jointly estimated for all users. Simulation results show that the pilot overhead required by the proposed scheme is lower than existing schemes.

Deep Learning for Beamspace Channel Estimation in Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems

Millimeter-wave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) can use a lens antenna array to considerably reduce the number of radio frequency (RF) chains, but channel estimation is challenging due to the number of RF chains is much smaller than that of antennas. By exploiting the sparsity of beamspace channels, the beamspace channel estimation can be formulated as a sparse signal recovery problem, which can be solved by the classical iterative algorithm named approximate message passing (AMP), and its corresponding version learned AMP (LAMP) realized by a deep neural network (DNN). However, these existing schemes cannot achieve satisfactory estimation accuracy. To improve the channel estimation performance, we propose a prior-aided Gaussian mixture LAMP (GM-LAMP) based beamspace channel estimation scheme in this paper. Specifically, based on the prior information that beamspace channel elements can be modeled by the Gaussian mixture distribution, we first derive a new shrinkage function to refine the AMP algorithm. Then, by replacing the original shrinkage function in the LAMP network with the derived Gaussian mixture shrinkage function, a prior-aided GM-LAMP network is developed to estimate the beamspace channel more accurately. Simulation results by using both the theoretical channel model and the ray-tracing based channel dataset show that, the proposed GM-LAMP network can achieve better channel estimation accuracy.

Joint Transceiver and Large Intelligent Surface Design for Massive MIMO MmWave Systems

Large intelligent surface (LIS) has recently emerged as a potential low-cost solution to reshape the wireless propagation environment for improving the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we consider a downlink millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system, where an LIS is deployed to assist the downlink data transmission from a base station (BS) to a user equipment (UE). Both the BS and the UE are equipped with a large number of antennas, and a hybrid analog/digital precoding/combining structure is used to reduce the hardware cost and energy consumption. We aim to maximize the spectral efficiency by jointly optimizing the LIS's reflection coefficients and the hybrid precoder (combiner) at the BS (UE). To tackle this non-convex problem, we reformulate the complex optimization problem into a much more friendly optimization problem by exploiting the inherent structure of the effective (cascade) mmWave channel. A manifold optimization (MO)-based algorithm is then developed. Simulation results show that by carefully devising LIS's reflection coefficients, our proposed method can help realize a favorable propagation environment with a small channel matrix condition number. Besides, it can achieve a performance comparable to those of state-of-the-art algorithms, while at a much lower computational complexity.

Extending Zeckendorf's Theorem to a Non-constant Recurrence and the Zeckendorf Game on this Non-constant Recurrence Relation

Zeckendorf's Theorem states that every positive integer can be uniquely represented as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers, indexed from $1, 2, 3, 5,\ldots$. This has been generalized by many authors, in particular to constant coefficient fixed depth linear recurrences with positive (or in some cases non-negative) coefficients. In this work we extend this result to a recurrence with non-constant coefficients, $a_{n+1} = n a_{n} + a_{n-1}$. The decomposition law becomes every $m$ has a unique decomposition as $\sum s_i a_i$ with $s_i \le i$, where if $s_i = i$ then $s_{i-1} = 0$. Similar to Zeckendorf's original proof, we use the greedy algorithm. We show that almost all the gaps between summands, as $n$ approaches infinity, are of length zero, and give a heuristic that the distribution of the number of summands tends to a Gaussian. Furthermore, we build a game based upon this recurrence relation, generalizing a game on the Fibonacci numbers. Given a fixed integer $n$ and an initial decomposition of $n= na_1$, the players alternate by using moves related to the recurrence relation, and whoever moves last wins. We show that the game is finite and ends at the unique decomposition of $n$, and that either player can win in a two-player game. We find the strategy to attain the shortest game possible, and the length of this shortest game. Then we show that in this generalized game when there are more than three players, no player has the winning strategy. Lastly, we demonstrate how one player in the two-player game can force the game to progress to their advantage.

On the Power Leakage Problem in Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO with Lens Antenna Arrays

The emerging millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with lens antenna arrays, which is also known as "beamspace MIMO", can effectively reduce the required number of power-hungry radio frequency (RF) chains. Therefore, it has been considered as a promising technique for the upcoming 5G communications and beyond. However, most current studies on beamspace MIMO have not taken into account the important power leakage problem in beamspace channels, which possibly leads to a significant degradation in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the system sum-rate. To this end, we propose a beam aligning precoding method to handle the power leakage problem in this paper. Firstly, a phase shifter network (PSN) structure is proposed, which enables each RF chain in beamspace MIMO to select multiple beams to collect the leakage power. Then, a rotation-based precoding algorithm is designed based on the proposed PSN structure, which aligns the channel gains of the selected beams towards the same direction for maximizing the received SNR at each user. Furthermore, we reveal some system design insights by analyzing the sum-rate and energy efficiency (EE) of the proposed beam aligning precoding method. In simulations, the proposed approach is found to achieve the near-optimal sum-rate performance compared with the ideal case of no power leakage, and obtains a higher EE than the existing schemes with either a linear or planar array.
