Accelerating vacua in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Accelerating vacua with maximally symmetric, but not necessarily spherical, sections for Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravities in generic dimensions are obtained. The acceleration parameter has the effect of shifting the cosmological constants in Einstein gravity, whereas in Gauss-Bonnet gravity the effective cosmological constants remain the same in the presence of acceleration as in the case without acceleration.

Gauss-Bonnet as effective cosmological constant

It is known that Gauss-Bonnet terms in higher dimensional gravity can produce an effective cosmological constant. We add extra examples to this picture by presenting explicitly two branches of accelerating vacuum solutions to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravities with a bare cosmological constant in 5 and 6 dimensions. Both branches of solutions are of constant curvature and the effective cosmological constants are independent of the acceleration parameter. One branch (the "-" branch) of the solutions is well defined in the limit when the Gauss-Bonnet parameter approaches zero, in which case the effective cosmological constant becomes identical with the bare value, while the other (i.e. the "+") branch is singular in the same limit, and beyond this singular limit, the effective cosmological constant is inversely proportional to the Gauss-Bonnet parameter with a negative constant of proportionality when the bare value vanishes.

Note on a class of anisotropic Einstein metrics

A class of anisotropic Einstein metrics is presented. These metrics are axial symmetric and contains an anisotropy parameter $α$, which is identified as the amplitude of the proper acceleration of the origin, thus explaining the ellipsoid shape of the horizon.

No fast food for solving higher curvature gravity

This paper is withdrawn because it was already known in the literature that the single function metric ansatz invalidates the effective action method. (Refs: gr-qc/0306114, gr-qc/0408067,gr-qc/0404120, gr-qc/0506014, 0705.1669, thanks to S. Deser for providing the information.)

Five-dimensional vacuum Einstein spacetimes in C-metric like coordinates

A 5-dimensional Einstein spacetime with (non)vanishing cosmological constant is analyzed in detail. The metric is in close analogy with the 4-dimensional massless uncharged C-metric in many aspects. The coordinate system, horizons and causal structures, relations to standard de Sitter, anti de Sitter and Minkowski vacua are investigated. After a boost and Kaluza-Klein reduction, we get an exact solution of 4-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Liouville theory which reduces to a solution to Einstein-Liouville theory in the limit of zero boost velocity and to that of Einstein-Maxwell-diliton theory in the case of zero cosmological constant.

Hidden symmetries for thermodynamics and emergence of relativity

Erik Verlinde recently proposed an idea about the thermodynamic origin of gravity. Though this is a beautiful idea which may resolve many long standing problems in the theories of gravity, it also raises many other problems. In this article I will comment on some of the problems of Verlinde's proposal with special emphasis on the thermodynamical origin of the principle of relativity. It is found that there is a large group of hidden symmetries of thermodynamics which contains the Poincare group of the spacetime for which space is emergent. This explains the thermodynamic origin of the principle of relativity.

Warped embeddings between Einstein manifolds

Warped embeddings from a lower dimensional Einstein manifold into a higher dimensional one are analyzed. Explicit solutions for the embedding metrics are obtained for all cases of codimension 1 embeddings and some of the codimension n>1 cases. Some of the interesting features of the embedding metrics are pointed out and potential applications of the embeddings are discussed.

C-metric like vacuum with non-negative cosmological constant in five dimensions

We present and analyze an exact 5-dimensional vacuum solution of Einstein equation with non-negative cosmological constant written in a C-metric like coordinate. The metric does not contain any black hole horizons in it, but has two acceleration horizons and a static patch in between. The coordinate system, horizon geometry and global structures are analyzed in detail, and in the case of vanishing cosmological constant, a simple exterior geometric interpretation is given. The metric possesses a spacelike Killing coordinate $ϕ$ besides the timelike coordinate $t$, along which the spacetime can be dimensionally reduced via Kaluza-Klein mechanism and interpreted as Einstein gravity coupled to a 4 dimensional Liouville field (and a Maxwell field as well if a boost operation is performed before the Kaluza-Klein reduction).

Exact solutions of embedding the four-dimensional perfect fluid in a five- or higher-dimensional Einstein spacetime and the cosmological interpretations

We investigate an exact solution that describes the embedding of the four-dimensional (4D) perfect fluid in a five-dimensional (5D) Einstein spacetime. The effective metric of the 4D perfect fluid as a hypersurface with induced matter is equivalent to the Robertson-Walker metric of cosmology. This general solution shows interconnections among many 5D solutions, such as the solution in the braneworld scenario and the topological black hole with cosmological constant. If the 5D cosmological constant is positive, the metric periodically depends on the extra dimension. Thus we can compactify the extra dimension on $S^1$ and study the phenomenological issues. We also generalize the metric ansatz to the higher-dimensional case, in which the 4D part of the Einstein equations can be reduced to a linear equation.

Hamiltonian formalism in Friedmann cosmology and its quantization

We propose a Hamiltonian formalism for a generalized Friedmann-Roberson-Walker cosmology model in the presence of both a variable equation of state (EOS) parameter $w(a)$ and a variable cosmological constant $Λ(a)$, where $a$ is the scale factor. This Hamiltonian system containing 1 degree of freedom and without constraint, gives Friedmann equations as the equation of motion, which describes a mechanical system with a variable mass object moving in a potential field. After an appropriate transformation of the scale factor, this system can be further simplified to an object with constant mass moving in an effective potential field. In this framework, the $Λ$ cold dark matter model as the current standard model of cosmology corresponds to a harmonic oscillator. We further generalize this formalism to take into account the bulk viscosity and other cases. The Hamiltonian can be quantized straightforwardly, but this is different from the approach of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in quantum cosmology.

Non-uniform Black Strings with Schwarzschild-(Anti-)de Sitter Foliation

We present some exact non-uniform black string solutions of 5-dimensional pure Einstein gravity as well as Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory at arbitrary dilaton coupling. The solutions share the common property that their 4-dimensional slices are Schwarzchild-(anti-)de Sitter spacetimes. The pure gravity solution is also generalized to spacetimes of dimensions higher than 5 to get non-uniform black branes.

Black chain of pearls in 5D de Sitter spacetime

We analyze some exact chain-shaped black hole solutions in 5-dimensional spacetime. Unlike usual black string and black ring solutions, the topology of the horizons of the new solutions are neither $\mathbb{R}\times R^{2}$ nor $S^1\times S^2$ but rather like several topological spheres concatenating each other at single points. The shape of the horizon suggests the name \emph{black chain of pearls} on which each \emph{pearl} is a topological 3-sphere on the chain. In addition to the usual black hole hairs, the number of pearls can be viewed as a new hair of the black chain of pearls.

Tunnelling through black rings

Hawking radiation of black ring solutions to 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity theory is analyzed by use of the Parikh-Wilczek tunnelling method. To get the correct tunnelling amplitude and emission rate, we adopted and developed the Angheben-Nadalini-Vanzo-Zerbini covariant approach to cover the effects of rotation and electronic discharge all at once, and the effect of back reaction is also taken into account. This constitute a unified approach to the tunnelling problem. Provided the first law of thermodynamics for black rings holds, the emission rate is proportional to the exponential of the change of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. Explicit calculation for black ring temperatures agree exactly with the results obtained via the classical surface gravity method and the quasilocal formalism.

On open string in generic background

A set of consistent Poisson brackets for an open string in generic spacetime background and NS-NS $B$-field is constructed. Upon quantization, this set of Poisson brackets lead to spacial \emph{commutative} $D$-branes at the string ends, showing that noncommutativity between spacial coordinates on the $D$-branes can be avoided.

Classical O(N) nonlinear sigma model on the half line: a study on consistent Hamiltonian description

The problem of consistent Hamiltonian structure for O(N) nonlinear sigma model in the presence of five different types of boundary conditions is considered in detail. For the case of Neumann, Dirichlet and the mixture of these two types of boundaries, the consistent Poisson brackets are constructed explicitly, which may be used, e.g. for the construction of current algebras in the presence of boundary. While for the mixed boundary conditions and the mixture of mixed and Dirichlet boundary conditions, we prove that there is no consistent Poisson brackets, showing that the mixed boundary conditions are incompatible with all nontrivial subgroups of $O((N)$.

Generalized Toda mechanics associated with classical Lie algebras and their reductions

For any classical Lie algebra $g$, we construct a family of integrable generalizations of Toda mechanics labeled a pair of ordered integers $(m,n)$. The universal form of the Lax pair, equations of motion, Hamiltonian as well as Poisson brackets are provided, and explicit examples for $\mathfrak{g}=B_{r},C_{r},D_{r}$ with $m,n\leq3$ are also given. For all $m,n$, it is shown that the dynamics of the $(m,n-1)$- and the $(m-1,n)$-Toda chains are natural reductions of that of the $(m,n)$-chain, and for $m=n$, there is also a family of symmetrically reduced Toda systems, the $(m,m)_{\mathrm{Sym}}$-Toda systems, which are also integrable. In the quantum case, all $(m,n)$-Toda systems with $m>1$ or $n>1$ describe the dynamics of standard Toda variables coupled to noncommutative variables. Except for the symmetrically reduced cases, the integrability for all $(m,n)$-Toda systems survive after quantization.

Higher Toda Mechanics and Spectral Curves

For each one of the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{gl}_{n}$ and $\widetilde {\mathfrak{gl}}_{n}$, we constructed a family of integrable generalizations of the Toda chains characterized by two integers $m_{+}$ and $m_{-}$. The Lax matrices and the equations of motion are given explicitly, and the integrals of motion can be calculated in terms of the trace of powers of the Lax matrix $L$. For the case of $m_{+}=m_{-}$, we find a symmetric reduction for each generalized Toda chain we found, and the solution to the initial value problems of the reduced systems is outlined. We also studied the spectral curves of the periodic $(m_{+},m_{-})$-Toda chains, which turns out to be very different for different pairs of $m_{+}$ and $m_{-}$. Finally we also obtained the nonabelian generalizations of the $(m_{+},m_{-})$-Toda chains in explicit form.
