Mechanism of substrate-induced anisotropic growth of monolayer WS2 by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations

Controlled anisotropic growth of two-dimensional materials provides an approach for the synthesis of large single crystals and nanoribbons, which are promising for applications as low-dimensional semiconductors and in next-generation optoelectronic devices. In particular, the anisotropic growth of transition metal dichalcogenides induced by the substrate is of great interest due to its operability. To date, however, their substrate-induced anisotropic growth is typically driven by the optimization of experimental parameters without uncovering the fundamental mechanism. Here, the anisotropic growth of monolayer tungsten disulfide on an ST-X quartz substrate is achieved by chemical vapor deposition, and the mechanism of substrate-induced anisotropic growth is examined by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. These results show that, besides the variation of substrate adsorption, the chalcogen to metal (C/M) ratio is a major contributor to the large growth anisotropy and the polarization of undergrowth and overgrowth; either perfect isotropy or high anisotropy can be expected when the C/M ratio equals 2.0 by properly controlling the linear relationship between gas flux and temperature.

MEMS approach to low-frequency broadband acoustic metamaterials

We experimentally demonstrate a simple micro-electro-mechnical systems (MEMS) approach to acoustic metamaterials and have observed the average increase of nearly 6 dB beyond the classic law for sound attenuation at low frequencies from 200 Hz to 1200 Hz. Here, we have also found that the MEMS metastructure, especially the cavity-backed micromembrane, contributes to 22.3% gain of sound transmission loss (STL) with a fill factor of perforation of less than 7.6%.

Surface modeling for optical fabrication with linear ion source

We present a concept of surface decomposition extended from double Fourier series to nonnegative sinusoidal wave surfaces, on the basis of which linear ion sources apply to the ultra-precision fabrication of complex surfaces and diffractive optics. It is the first time that we have a surface descriptor for building a relationship between the fabrication process of optical surfaces and the surface characterization based on PSD analysis, which akin to Zernike polynomials used for mapping the relationship between surface errors and Seidel aberrations. Also, we demonstrate that the one-dimensional scanning of linear ion source is applicable to the removal of surface errors caused by small-tool polishing in raster scan mode as well as the fabrication of beam sampling grating of high diffractive uniformity without a post-processing procedure. The simulation results show that, in theory, optical fabrication with linear ion source is feasible and even of higher output efficiency compared with the conventional approach.

Variable-spot ion beam figuring

This paper introduces a new scheme of ion beam figuring (IBF), or rather variable-spot IBF, which is conducted at a constant scanning velocity with variable-spot ion beam collimated by a variable diaphragm. It aims at improving the reachability and adaptation of the figuring process within the limits of machine dynamics by varying the ion beam spot size instead of the scanning velocity. In contrast to the dwell time algorithm in the conventional IBF, the variable-spot IBF adopts a new algorithm, which consists of the scan path programming and the trajectory optimization using pattern search. In this algorithm, instead of the dwell time, a new concept, integral etching time, is proposed to interpret the process of variable-spot IBF. We conducted simulations to verify its feasibility and practicality. The simulation results indicate the variable-spot IBF is a promising alternative to the conventional approach.

Fine-tuning the etch depth profile via dynamic shielding of ion beam

We introduce a method for finely adjusting the etch depth profile by dynamic shielding in the course of ion beam etching (IBE), which is crucial for the ultra-precision fabrication of large optics. We study the physical process of dynamic shielding and propose a parametric modeling method to quantitatively analyze the shielding effect on etch depths, or rather the shielding rate, where a piecewise Gaussian model is adopted to fit the shielding rate profile. We have conducted two experiments. In the experiment on parametric modeling of shielding rate profiles, its result shows that the shielding rate profile is significantly influenced by the rotary angle of the leaf. And the experimental result of fine-tuning the etch depth profile shows good agreement with the simulated result, which preliminarily verifies the feasibility of our method.
