Correspondences for hyperkähler varieties with large Picard numbers

In this note, we explore the connection between hyperkähler manifolds with large Picard numbers and abelian varieties. In particular, we are interested in Morrison's solution to the (modified) Oda's conjecture: every K3 surface whose Picard group is large enough (in a certain precise sense) must be related via an algebraic correspondence to an abelian surface. We generalize this theorem to the case of known examples of hyperkähler manifolds such as pointed Hilbert schemes on K3 surfaces.

Sections of Lagrangian fibrations on holomorphic symplectic manifolds

Let $M$ be a holomorphically symplectic manifold, equipped with a Lagrangian fibration $π:\; M \to X$. A degenerate twistor deformation (sometimes also called ``a Tate-Shafarevich twist'') is a family of holomorphically symplectic structures on $M$ parametrized by $H^{1,1}(X)$. All members of this family are equipped with a holomorphic Lagrangian projection to $X$, and their fibers are isomorphic to the fibers of $π$. Assume that $M$ is a compact hyperkahler manifold of maximal holonomy, and the general fiber of the Lagrangian projection $π$ is primitive (that is, not divisible) in integer homology. We also assume that $π$ has reduced fibers in codimension 1. Then $M$ has a degenerate twistor deformation $M'$ such that the Lagrangian projection $π:\; M' \to X$ admits a meromorphic section.

Minimal multiplicity of fiber components in abelian fibrations

An abelian fibration is a proper projective surjective map of complex varieties with general fiber an abelian variety. Consider a multiple fiber of an abelian fibration, and let $m_1, ..., m_k$ be the multiplicities of its irreducible components. We prove that the minimum of $m_i$ is equal to their greatest common divisor $gcd(m_1, ..., m_k)$

Non-hyperbolicity of holomorphic symplectic varieties

We prove non-hyperbolicity of primitive symplectic varieties with $b_2 \geq 5$ that satisfy the rational SYZ conjecture. If in addition $b_2 \geq 7$, we establish that the Kobayashi pseudometric vanishes identically. This in particular applies to all currently known examples of irreducible symplectic manifolds and thereby completes the results by Kamenova--Lu--Verbitsky. The key new contribution is that a projective primitive symplectic variety with a Lagrangian fibration has vanishing Kobayashi pseudometric. The proof uses ergodicity, birational contractions, and cycle spaces.

On anti-hyperbolicity for hyperkähler varieties

By restricting to (a linear subspace of) an affine chart in projective space, a complex stably rational or unirational manifold of dimension $m$ is meromorphically dominable by $\mathbb C^m$, i.e., admits a meromorphic dominating map from $\mathbb C^m$. So are varieties that are birational to abelian varieties and Kummer K3 surfaces. G. Buzzard and the second author have shown that elliptic K3 surfaces are holomorphically dominable by $\mathbb C^2$, i.e. admitting a holomorphic map with nontrivial Jacobian. In this paper we explore various examples and criteria for meromorphic and holomorphic dominability by $\mathbb C^m$ of certain hyperkähler manifolds, generalizing some known results about K3 surfaces. Anti-hyperbolicity has several interpretations in the sense of vanishing of the Kobayashi-Royden metrics, admitting dense entire holomorphic curves, or dominating holomorphic or meromorphic maps from the complex affine space of the same dimension.

Torsor Neron models of hyperkahler manifolds

Let $M$ be a compact hyperkahler manifold equipped with a Lagrangian fibration $π:\; M \to X$, and $M'$ the smooth locus of $π$. We prove that over a complement to a codimension $\geq 2$ subset in $X$, the projection $π:\; M' \to X$ has a natural structure of a torsor over an abelian group bundle, which can be understood as a complex analytic variant of the Néron model construction. This gives an independent proof of a result by Y.-J. Kim.

Some density results for hyperkähler manifolds

Lagrangian fibrations of hyperkähler manifolds are induced by semi-ample line bundles which are isotropic with respect to the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki form. For a non-isotrivial family of hyperkähler manifolds over a complex manifold $S$ of positive dimension, we prove that the set of points in $S$, for which there is an isotropic class in the Picard lattice of the corresponding hyperkähler manifold represented as a fiber over that point, is analytically dense in $S$. We also prove the expected openness and density of the locus of polarised hyperkähler manifolds that admit a nef algebraic isotropic line bundle.

Symplectic involutions of $K3^{[n]}$ type and Kummer $n$ type manifolds

In this paper we describe the fixed locus of a symplectic involution on a hyperkähler manifold of type $K3^{[n]}$ or of Kummer $n$ type. We prove that the fixed locus consists of finitely many copies of Hilbert schemes of $K3$ surfaces of lower dimensions and isolated fixed points.

Fixed loci of symplectic automorphisms of $K3^{[n]}$ and $n$-Kummer type manifolds

The aim of this paper is to give an explicit description of the fixed loci of symplectic automorphisms for certain hyperkahler manifolds, namely for Hilbert schemes on K3 surfaces and for generalized Kummer varieties. Here we extend our previous results from the case of involutions to more general groups. In particular, under some conditions on the dimension, we give the full answer for finite group actions of symplectic automorphisms coming from K3 surfaces. We prove that the all irreducible components of the fixed loci are of $K3^{[k]}$ type of lower dimensions or isolated points.

Boundedness in families with applications to arithmetic hyperbolicity

Motivated by conjectures of Demailly, Green-Griffiths, Lang, and Vojta, we show that several notions related to hyperbolicity behave similarly in families. We apply our results to show the persistence of arithmetic hyperbolicity along field extensions for projective normal surfaces with nonzero irregularity. These results rely on the mild boundedness of semi-abelian varieties. We also introduce and study the notion of pseudo-algebraic hyperbolicity which extends Demailly's notion of algebraic hyperbolicity for projective schemes.

Roundness of the ample cone and existence of double Lagrangian fibrations on hyperkahler manifolds

Let $M$ be a hyperkahler manifold of maximal holonomy (that is, an IHS manifold), and let $K$ be its Kahler cone, which is an open, convex subset in the space $H^{1,1}(M, R)$ of real (1,1)-forms. This space is equipped with a canonical bilinear symmetric form of signature $(1,n)$ obtained as a restriction of the Bogomolov-Beauville-Fujiki form. The set of vectors of positive square in the space of signature $(1,n)$ is a disconnected union of two convex cones. The "positive cone" is the component which contains the Kahler cone. We say that the Kahler cone is "round" if it is equal to the positive cone. The manifolds with round Kahler cones have unique bimeromorphic model and correspond to Hausdorff points in the corresponding Teichmuller space. We prove thay any maximal holonomy hyperkahler manifold with $b_2 > 4$ has a deformation with round Kahler cone and the Picard lattice of signature (1,1), admitting two non-collinear integer isotropic classes. This is used to show that all known examples of hyperkahler manifolds admit a deformation with two transversal Lagrangian fibrations, and the Kobayashi metric vanishes unless the Picard rank is maximal.

Finiteness of stable Lagrangian fibrations

In this paper we survey some finiteness results of the deformation classes of hyperkähler Lagrangian fibrations, and we prove finiteness for stable Lagrangian fibrations with a given discriminant divisor.

Holomorphic Lagrangian subvarieties in holomorphic symplectic manifolds with Lagrangian fibrations and special Kahler geometry

Let $M$ be a holomorphic symplectic Kähler manifold equipped with a Lagrangian fibration $π$ with compact fibers. The base of this manifold is equipped with a special Kähler structure, that is, a Kähler structure $(I, g, ω)$ and a symplectic flat connection $\nabla$ such that the metric $g$ is locally the Hessian of a function. We prove that any Lagrangian subvariety $Z\subset M$ which intersects smooth fibers of $π$ and smoothly projects to $π(Z)$ is a toric fibration over its image $π(Z)$ in $B$, and this image is also special Kähler. This answers a question of N. Hitchin related to Kapustin-Witten BBB/BAA duality.

Kobayashi pseudometric on hyperkahler manifolds

The Kobayashi pseudometric on a complex manifold is the maximal pseudometric such that any holomorphic map from the Poincaré disk to the manifold is distance-decreasing. Kobayashi has conjectured that this pseudometric vanishes on Calabi-Yau manifolds. Using ergodicity of complex structures, we prove this conjecture for any hyperkähler manifold that admits a deformation with two Lagrangian fibrations and whose Picard rank is not maximal. The Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) conjecture claims that parabolic nef line bundles on hyperkähler manifolds are semi-ample. We prove that the Kobayashi pseudometric vanishes for any hyperkähler manifold with $b_2\geq 13$ if the SYZ conjecture holds for all its deformations. This proves the Kobayashi conjecture for all K3 surfaces and their Hilbert schemes.

Demailly's notion of algebraic hyperbolicity: geometricity, boundedness, moduli of maps

Demailly's conjecture, which is a consequence of the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture on varieties of general type, states that an algebraically hyperbolic complex projective variety is Kobayashi hyperbolic. Our aim is to provide evidence for Demailly's conjecture by verifying several predictions it makes. We first define what an algebraically hyperbolic projective variety is, extending Demailly's definition to (not necessarily smooth) projective varieties over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and we prove that this property is stable under extensions of algebraically closed fields. Furthermore, we show that the set of (not necessarily surjective) morphisms from a projective variety $Y$ to a projective algebraically hyperbolic variety $X$ that map a fixed closed subvariety of $Y$ onto a fixed closed subvariety of $X$ is finite. As an application, we obtain that Aut$(X)$ is finite and that every surjective endomorphism of $X$ is an automorphism. Finally, we explore "weaker" notions of hyperbolicity related to boundedness of moduli spaces of maps, and verify similar predictions made by the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture on hyperbolic projective varieties.

Kobayashi non-hyperbolicity of Calabi-Yau manifolds via mirror symmetry

A compact complex manifold is Kobayashi non-hyperbolic if there exists an entire curve on it. Using mirror symmetry we establish that there are (possibly singular) elliptic or rational curves on any Calabi-Yau manifold $X$, whose mirror dual $\check X$ exists and is not "Hodge degenerate", therefore proving that $X$ is Kobayashi non-hyperbolic. We are not aware of any higher dimensional simply connected Calabi-Yau manifolds that satisfy the "Hodge degenerate" condition.
