Optical Vortices and Vortex Solitons

Optical vortices are phase singularities nested in electromagnetic waves that constitute a fascinating source of phenomena in the physics of light and display deep similarities to their close relatives, quantized vortices in superfluids and Bose-Einstein condensates. We present a brief overview of the major advances in the study of optical vortices in different types of nonlinear media, with emphasis on the properties of {\em vortex solitons}. Self-focusing nonlinearity leads, in general, to the azimuthal instability of a vortex-carrying beam, but it can also support novel types of stable or meta-stable self-trapped beams carrying nonzero angular momentum, such as ring-like solitons, necklace beams, and soliton clusters. We describe vortex solitons created by multi-component beams, by parametrically coupled beams in quadratic nonlinear media, and in partially incoherent light, as well as discrete vortex solitons in periodic photonic lattices.

Multicolor vortex solitons in two-dimensional photonic lattices

We report on the existence and stability of multicolor lattice vortex solitons constituted by coupled fundamental frequency and second-harmonic waves in optical lattices in quadratic nonlinear media. It is shown that the solitons are stable almost in the entire domain of their existence, and that the instability domain decreases with the increase of the lattice depth. We also show the generation of the solitons, and the feasibility of the concept of lattice soliton algebra.

Stable ring vortex solitons in Bessel optical lattices

Stable ring vortex solitons, featuring a bright-shape, appear to be very rare in nature. However, here we show that they exist and can be made dynamically stable in defocusing cubic nonlinear media with an imprinted Bessel optical lattice. We find the families of vortex lattice solitons and reveal their salient properties, including the conditions required for their stability. We show that the higher the soliton topological charge, the deeper the lattice modulation necessary for stabilization.

Soliton spiraling in optically-induced rotating Bessel lattices

We address soliton spiraling in optical lattices induced by multiple coherent Bessel beams and show that the dynamical nature of such lattices make them able to drag different soliton structures, setting them into rotation. The rotation rate can be controlled by varying the topological charges of lattice-inducing Bessel beams.

Spatiotemporal discrete multicolor solitons

We have found various families of two-dimensional spatiotemporal solitons in quadratically nonlinear waveguide arrays. The families of unstaggered odd, even and twisted stationary solutions are thoroughly characterized and their stability against perturbations is investigated. We show that the twisted and even solutions display instability, while most of the odd solitons show remarkable stability upon evolution.

Stable soliton complexes and azimuthal switching in modulated Bessel optical lattices

We address azimuthally modulated Bessel optical lattices imprinted in focusing cubic Kerr-type nonlinear media, and reveal that such lattices support different types of stable solitons, whose complexity increases with growth of lattice order. We reveal that the azimuthally modulated lattices cause single solitons launched tangentially to the guiding rings to jump along consecutive sites of the optical lattice. The position of the output channel can be varied by small changes of the launching angle.

Stabilization of vector solitons in optical lattices

We address the properties and dynamical stability of one-dimensional vector lattice solitons in Kerr-type cubic medium with harmonic transverse modulation of refractive index. We discovered that unstable families of scalar lattice solitons can be stabilized via the cross-phase modulation (XPM) in the vector case. It was found that multi-humped vector solitons that are unstable in uniform media where XPM strength is higher than that of self-phase modulation, can also be stabilized by the lattice.

Rotary dipole-mode solitons in Bessel photonic lattices

We address Bessel photonic lattices of radial symmetry imprinted in cubic Kerr-type nonlinear media and show that they support families of stable dipole-mode solitons featuring two out-of-phase light spots located in different lattice rings. We show that the radial symmetry of the Bessel lattices afford a variety of unique soliton dynamics including controlled radiation-free rotation of the dipole-mode solitons.

Soliton eigenvalue control with optical lattices

We address the dynamics of higher-order solitons in optical lattices, and predict their self-splitting into the set of their single-soliton constituents. The splitting is induced by the potential introduced by the lattice, together with the imprinting of a phase tilt onto the initial multisoliton states. The phenomenon allows the controllable generation of several coherent solitons linked via their Zakharov-Shabat eigenvalues. Application of the scheme to the generation of correlated matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates is discussed.

Rotary solitons in Bessel photonic lattices

We introduce solitons supported by Bessel photonic lattices in cubic nonlinear media. We show that the cylindrical geometry of the lattice, with several concentric rings, affords unique soliton properties and dynamics. In particular, besides the lowest-order solitons trapped in the center of the lattice, we find soliton families trapped at different lattice rings. Such solitons can be set into controlled rotation inside each ring, thus featuring novel types of in-ring and inter-ring soliton interactions.

Soliton trains in photonic lattices

We address the formation and propagation of multi-spot soliton packets in saturable Kerr nonlinear media with an imprinted harmonic transverse modulation of the refractive index. We show that, in sharp contrast to homogeneous media where stable multi-peaked solitons do not exist, the photonic lattices support stable higher-order structures in the form of soliton packets, or soliton trains. Intuitively, such trains can be viewed as made of several lowest order solitons bound together with appropriate relative phases and their existence as stable objects puts forward the concept of compact manipulation of several solitons as a single entity.

Soliton "molecules": robust clusters of light bullets

We show how to generate robust self-sustained clusters of soliton bullets-spatiotemporal (optical or matter-wave) solitons. The clusters carry an orbital angular momentum being supported by competing nonlinearities. The "atoms" forming the "molecule" are fully three-dimensional solitons linked via a staircase-like macroscopic phase. Recent progress in generating atomic-molecular coherent mixing in Bose-Einstein condensates might open potential scenarios for the experimental generation of these soliton molecules with matter-waves.

Globally-Linked Vortex Clusters in Trapped Wave Fields

We put forward the existence of a rich variety of fully stationary vortex structures, termed H-clusters, made of an increasing number of vortices nested in paraxial wave fields confined by trapping potentials. However, we show that the constituent vortices are globally linked, rather than products of independent vortices. Also, they always feature a monopolar global wave front and exist in nonlinear systems, such as Bose-Einstein condensates. Clusters with multipolar global wave fronts are non-stationary or at best flipping.

Engineering of spatial solitons in two-period QPM structures

We report on a scheme which might make it practically possible to engineer the effective competing nonlinearities that on average govern the light propagation in quasi-phase-matching (QPM) gratings. Modulation of the QPM period with a second longer period, introduces an extra degree of freedom, which can be used to engineer the effective quadratic and induced cubic nonlinearity. However, in contrast to former work here we use a simple phase-reversal grating for the modulation, which is practically realizable and has already been fabricated. Furthermore, we develop the theory for arbitrary relative lengths of the two periods and we consider the effect on solitons and the bandwidth for their generation. We derive an expression for the bandwidth of multicolor soliton generation in two-period QPM samples and we predict and confirm numerically that the bandwidth is broader in the two-period QPM sample than in homogeneous structures.

Management of the Angular Momentum of Light: Preparation of Photons in Multidimensional Vector States of Angular

We put forward schemes to prepare photons in multi-dimensional vector states of orbital angular momentum. We show realizable light distributions that yield prescribed states with finite or infinite normal modes. In particular, we show that suitable light vortex-pancakes allow the add-drop of specific vector projections. We suggest that such photons might allow the generation of it engineered quNits in multi-dimensional quantum information systems.

Structural instability of vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates

In this paper we study a gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and show that: (i) A minimum value of the interaction is needed for the existence of stable persistent currents. (ii) Vorticity is not a fundamental invariant of the system, as there exists a conservative mechanism which can destroy a vortex and change its sign. (iii) This mechanism is suppressed by strong interactions.

Robustness of Quadratic Solitons with Periodic Gain

We address the robustness of quadratic solitons with periodic non-conservative perturbations. We find the evolution equations for guiding-center solitons under conditions for second-harmonic generation in the presence of periodic multi-band loss and gain. Under proper conditions, a robust guiding-center soliton formation is revealed.
