Surface waves at the interface between left-handed and birefringent materials

We theoretically investigate the existence and properties of hybrid surface waves forming at interfaces between left-handed materials and dielectric birefringent media. The existence conditions of such waves are found to be highly relaxed in comparison to the original hybrid surface waves, discovered by Dyakonov, in configurations involving birefringent materials and right-handed media. Hybrid surface waves in left-handed materials feature remarkable properties: (i) a high degree of localization and (ii) coexistence of several guided solutions. The existence of several hybrid surface waves for the same parameter set is linked to the birefringent nature of the medium whereas the strong localization is related to the presence of the left-handed material. The hybrid surface modes appear for large areas in the parameter space.

Multipole vector solitons in nonlocal nonlinear media

We show that multipole solitons can be made stable via vectorial coupling in bulk nonlocal nonlinear media. Such vector solitons are composed of mutually incoherent nodeless and multipole components jointly inducing a nonlinear refractive index profile. We found that stabilization of the otherwise highly unstable multipoles occurs below a maximum energy flow. Such threshold is determined by the nonlocality degree.

Bragg-type soliton mirror

We study soliton reflection/transmission at the interface between uniform medium and the optical lattice with focusing Kerr nonlinearity. We reveal that such interfaces afford rich new opportunities for controlling the reflection and transmission coefficients and nonlinear Snell law, the key control parameters being the spatial frequency and depth of the lattice.

Surface vortex solitons

We discover the existence of vortex solitons supported by the surface between two optical lattices imprinted in Kerr-type nonlinear media. Such solitons can feature strongly noncanonical profiles, and we found that their properties are dictated by the location of the vortex core relative to the surface. The refractive index modulation forming the lattices at both sides of the interface results in complete stability of the vortex solitons in wide domains of their existence, thus introducing the first known example of stable topological solitons supported by a surface.

Multipole-mode solitons in Bessel optical lattices

We study basic properties of quiescent and rotating multipole-mode solitons supported by axially symmetric Bessel lattices in a medium with defocusing cubic nonlinearity. The solitons can be found in different rings of the lattice and are stable when the propagation constant exceeds the critical value, provided that the lattice is deep enough. In a high-power limit the multipole-mode solitons feature a multi-ring structure.

Topological dragging of solitons

We put forward properties of solitons supported by optical lattices featuring topological dislocations, and show that solitons experience attractive and repulsive forces around the dislocations. Suitable arrangements of dislocations are even found to form soliton traps, and the properties of such solitons are shown to crucially depend on the trap topology. The uncovered phenomenon opens a new concept for soliton control and manipulation, e.g., in disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates.

Shaping soliton properties in optical Mathieu lattices

We address basic properties and stability of two-dimensional solitons in photonic lattices induced by the nondiffracting Mathieu beams. Such lattices allow for smooth topological transformation of radially symmetric Bessel lattices into quasi-one-dimensional periodic ones. The transformation of lattice topology drastically affects properties of ground-state and dipole-mode solitons, including their shape, stability and transverse mobility.

Soliton mobility in nonlocal optical lattices

We address the impact of nonlocality in the physical features exhibited by solitons supported by Kerr-type nonlinear media with an imprinted optical lattice. We discover that nonlocality of nonlinear response can profoundly affect the soliton mobility, hence all the related phenomena. Such behavior manifests itself in significant reductions of the Peierls-Nabarro potential with increase of the degree of nonlocality, a result that opens the rare possibility in nature of almost radiationless propagation of highly localized solitons across the lattice.

Upper threshold for stability of multipole-mode solitons in nonlocal nonlinear media

We address the stability of multipole-mode solitons in nonlocal Kerr-type nonlinear media. Such solitons comprise several out-of-phase peaks packed together by the forces acting between them. We discover that dipole-, triple-, and quadrupole-mode solitons can be made stable, whereas all higher-order soliton bound states are unstable.

Soliton topology versus discrete symmetry in optical lattices

We address the existence of vortex solitons supported by azimuthally modulated lattices and reveal how the global lattice discrete symmetry has fundamental implications on the possible topological charges of solitons. We set a general ``charge rule'' using group-theory techniques, which holds for all lattices belonging to a given symmetry group. Focusing in the case of Bessel lattices allows us to derive also a overall stability rule for the allowed vortex solitons.

Controllable soliton dragging by dynamical optical lattices

We report on the phenomenon of controllable soliton dragging by dynamical optical lattices induced by three imbalanced interfering plane waves. Because of such an imbalance, the transverse momentum of the lattice does not vanish, and thus the dynamical lattice can cause soliton dragging. The dragging rate is shown to depend on the amplitude and on the angle of incidence of the third plane wave making the optical lattice.

Swinging of two-dimensional solitons in harmonic and Bessel optical lattices

We consider parametric amplification of two-dimensional spatial soliton swinging in longitudinally modulated harmonic and Bessel lattices in Kerr-type saturable medium. We show that soliton center oscillations along different axes in two-dimensional lattices are coupled, which give rise to a number of interesting propagation scenarios including periodic damping and excitation of soliton oscillations along perpendicular axes, selective amplification of soliton swinging along one of transverse axes and enhancement of soliton spiraling.

Soliton control in chirped photonic lattices

We study optical solitons in chirped periodic optical lattices whose amplitude or frequency changes in the transverse direction. We discover that soliton propagation in such lattices can be accompanied by the progressive self-bending of the soliton trajectory, and we show that the soliton bending rate and output position can be controlled by varying the lattice depth, as well as the chirp amplitude and frequency modulation rate. This effect has potential applications for controllable soliton steering and routing.

Reconfigurable soliton networks optically-induced by arrays of nondiffracting Bessel beams

We address the propagation of solitons in reconfigurable two-dimensional networks induced optically by arrays of nondiffracting Bessel beams in Kerr-type nonlinear media. We show that broad soliton beams can move across networks having different topologies almost without radiation losses, opening new prospects for all-optical soliton manipulation. We also discuss various switching scenarios for solitons launched into multi-core directional couplers optically-induced by suitable arrays of Bessel beams.

Stable one-dimensional periodic waves in Kerr-type saturable and quadratic nonlinear media

We review the latest progress and properties of the families of bright and dark one-dimensional periodic waves propagating in saturable Kerr-type and quadratic nonlinear media. We show how saturation of the nonlinear response results in appearance of stability (instability) bands in focusing (defocusing) medium, which is in sharp contrast with the properties of periodic waves in Kerr media. One of the key results discovered is the stabilization of multicolor periodic waves in quadratic media. In particular, dark-type waves are shown to be metastable, while bright-type waves are completely stable in a broad range of energy flows and material parameters. This yields the first known example of completely stable periodic wave patterns propagating in conservative uniform media supporting bright solitons. Such results open the way to the experimental observation of the corresponding self-sustained periodic wave patterns.

Stable multicolor periodic-wave arrays

We study the existence and stability of cnoidal periodic wave arrays propagating in uniform quadratic nonlinear media and discover that they become completely stable above a threshold light intensity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example in physics of completely stable periodic wave patterns propagating in conservative uniform media supporting bright solitons.

Composite vortex-ring solitons in Bessel photonic lattices

We reveal the existence of dynamically stable composite topological solitons in Bessel photonic lattices imprinted in focusing Kerr-type nonlinear media. The new stable composite solitons are made of a vortex-ring with unit topological charge incoherently coupled to a fundamental soliton. The stabilization of the otherwise highly azimuthally unstable vortex-rings is provided under suitable conditions, which we study in detail, by cross-phase-modulation coupling with the fundamental soliton companion.
