Quasi-geostrophic projection of rotating shallow-water equations

With a new unifying model for layered rotating shallow-water (RSW) and quasi-geostrophic (QG) equations, this paper sheds light on the relation between these two sets of equations. We propose here a new formulation of the quasi-geostrophic equations as a projection of the rotating shallow-water equations. This QG formulation uses the same prognostic variables as RSW, namely velocity and layer thickness, restoring the proximity of these two sets of equations. It allows direct access to the ageostrophic velocities hidden in geostrophic velocities resolved by the QG equations. It opens the path of studying the difference between QG and RSW using the same underlying numerical discretization. We illustrate this new possibility on a vortex shear instability and a double-gyre configuration.

Characterisation of analogue Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor test structures implemented in a 65 nm CMOS imaging process

Analogue test structures were fabricated using the Tower Partners Semiconductor Co. CMOS 65 nm ISC process. The purpose was to characterise and qualify this process and to optimise the sensor for the next generation of Monolithic Active Pixels Sensors for high-energy physics. The technology was explored in several variants which differed by: doping levels, pixel geometries and pixel pitches (10-25 $μ$m). These variants have been tested following exposure to varying levels of irradiation up to 3 MGy and $10^{16}$ 1 MeV n$_\text{eq}$ cm$^{-2}$. Here the results from prototypes that feature direct analogue output of a 4$\times$4 pixel matrix are reported, allowing the systematic and detailed study of charge collection properties. Measurements were taken both using $^{55}$Fe X-ray sources and in beam tests using minimum ionizing particles. The results not only demonstrate the feasibility of using this technology for particle detection but also serve as a reference for future applications and optimisations.

Magnetar as the Central Engine of AT2018cow: Optical, Soft X-Ray, and Hard X-Ray Emission

AT2018cow is the most extensively observed and widely studied fast blue optical transient to date; its unique observational properties challenge all existing standard models. In this paper, we model the luminosity evolution of the optical, soft X-ray, and hard X-ray emission, as well as the X-ray spectrum of AT2018cow with a magnetar-centered engine model. We consider a two-zone model with a striped magnetar wind in the interior and an expanding ejecta outside. The soft and hard X-ray emission of AT2018cow can be explained by the leakage of high-energy photons produced by internal gradual magnetic dissipation in the striped magnetar wind, while the luminous thermal UV/optical emission results from the thermalization of the ejecta by the captured photons. The two-component energy spectrum yielded by our model with a quasi-thermal component from the optically thick region of the wind superimposed on an optically thin synchrotron component well reproduces the X-ray spectral shape of AT2018cow. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo fitting results suggest that in order to explain the very short rise time to peak of the thermal optical emission, a low ejecta mass $M_{\rm ej}\approx0.1~M_\odot$ and high ejecta velocity $v_{\rm SN}\approx0.17c$ are required. A millisecond magnetar with $P_0\approx3.7~\rm ms$ and $B_p\approx2.4\times10^{14}~\rm G$ is needed to serve as the central engine of AT2018cow.

The Very Early Soft X-ray Plateau of GRB 230307A: Signature of an Evolving Radiative Efficiency in Magnetar Wind Dissipation?

Very recently, a particularly long gamma-ray burst (GRB) 230307A was reported and proposed to originate from a compact binary merger based on its host galaxy property, kilonova, and heavy elements. More intriguingly, a very early plateau followed by a rapid decline in soft X-ray band was detected in its light curve by the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy, indicating strong evidence of the existence of a magnetar as the merger product. This work explores that the Magnetar Wind Internal Gradual MAgnetic Dissipation (MIGMAD) model, in which the radiative efficiency evolves over time, successfully fits it to the observed data. Our results reinforce the notion that the X-ray plateau serves as a powerful indicator of a magnetar and imply that an evolving efficiency is likely to be a common feature in X-ray plateaus of GRB afterglows. In addition, we also discuss the explanations for the prompt emission, GRB afterglows, as well as kilonova, and predict possible kilonova afterglows in a magnetar central engine.

The Activity of Black Hole Imprints on the Internal Plateau and the Subsequent Sharp Decay

A stellar-mass black hole (BH) or a millisecond magnetar is believed to be born as the central engine of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The presence of plateaus in the X-ray extended emission or afterglow of GRBs is widely accepted as an indicator of magnetar central engine, particularly those with a sharp decay (faster than $t^{-3}$), so-called internal plateau. However, an alternative model, by taking the evolution of the magnetic flux at the BH horizon into account, suggests that an internal plateau can also arise from a Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism powered jet (hereafter referred to as the BZ jet). In this study, we propose that a precessional BZ jet would manifest a Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) signature on the internal plateau and the subsequent sharp decay. Such lightcurves cannot be readily explained by the activity of a short-lived, supermassive magnetar, thus favoring a Kerr BH as the central engine. The X-ray afterglow of GRB 050904, comprising nine flares, is characterized by a QPO-modulated plateau and sharp decay, which can be well reproduced by a precessional BZ jet model. Therefore, one potential clue for distinguishing between these two engines lies in whether QPO signature throughout the entire plateau and the subsequent sharp decay, as the magnetar scenario suggests a collapse at the end of the plateau.

Weaver: Foundation Models for Creative Writing

This work introduces Weaver, our first family of large language models (LLMs) dedicated to content creation. Weaver is pre-trained on a carefully selected corpus that focuses on improving the writing capabilities of large language models. We then fine-tune Weaver for creative and professional writing purposes and align it to the preference of professional writers using a suit of novel methods for instruction data synthesis and LLM alignment, making it able to produce more human-like texts and follow more diverse instructions for content creation. The Weaver family consists of models of Weaver Mini (1.8B), Weaver Base (6B), Weaver Pro (14B), and Weaver Ultra (34B) sizes, suitable for different applications and can be dynamically dispatched by a routing agent according to query complexity to balance response quality and computation cost. Evaluation on a carefully curated benchmark for assessing the writing capabilities of LLMs shows Weaver models of all sizes outperform generalist LLMs several times larger than them. Notably, our most-capable Weaver Ultra model surpasses GPT-4, a state-of-the-art generalist LLM, on various writing scenarios, demonstrating the advantage of training specialized LLMs for writing purposes. Moreover, Weaver natively supports retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and function calling (tool usage). We present various use cases of these abilities for improving AI-assisted writing systems, including integration of external knowledge bases, tools, or APIs, and providing personalized writing assistance. Furthermore, we discuss and summarize a guideline and best practices for pre-training and fine-tuning domain-specific LLMs.

Uniform far-field asymptotics of the two-layered Green function in 2D and application to wave scattering in a two-layered medium

In this paper, we establish new results for the uniform far-field asymptotics of the two-layered Green function (together with its derivatives) in 2D in the frequency domain. To the best of our knowledge, our results are the sharpest yet obtained. The steepest descent method plays an important role in the proofs of our results. Further, as an application of our new results, we derive the uniform far-field asymptotics of the scattered field to the acoustic scattering problem by buried obstacles in a two-layered medium with a locally rough interface. The results obtained in this paper provide a theoretical foundation for our recent work, where direct imaging methods have been developed to image the locally rough interface from phaseless total-field data or phased far-field data at a fixed frequency. It is believed that the results obtained in this paper will also be useful on its own right.

Agents: An Open-source Framework for Autonomous Language Agents

Recent advances on large language models (LLMs) enable researchers and developers to build autonomous language agents that can automatically solve various tasks and interact with environments, humans, and other agents using natural language interfaces. We consider language agents as a promising direction towards artificial general intelligence and release Agents, an open-source library with the goal of opening up these advances to a wider non-specialist audience. Agents is carefully engineered to support important features including planning, memory, tool usage, multi-agent communication, and fine-grained symbolic control. Agents is user-friendly as it enables non-specialists to build, customize, test, tune, and deploy state-of-the-art autonomous language agents without much coding. The library is also research-friendly as its modularized design makes it easily extensible for researchers. Agents is available at https://github.com/aiwaves-cn/agents.

On the residual Monge-Ampère mass of plurisubharmonic functions with symmetry, II

The aim of this article is to study the residual Monge-Ampère mass of a plurisubharmonic function with an isolated singularity, provided with the circular symmetry. With the aid of Sasakian geometry, we obtain an estimate on the residual mass of this function with respect to its Lelong number and maximal directional Lelong number. This result partially answers the zero mass conjecture raised by Guedj and Rashkovskii.

Searching for Associations Between Short Gamma-ray Bursts and Fast Radio Burst

The physical origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is still unclear. However, young magnetars associated with short-duration gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) have been thought to be possible central engines for some FRBs. In this paper, we perform a systematic search for SGRBs that are associated with FRBs in a sample including 623 FRBs (601 one-off bursts and 22 repeaters) and 168 SGRBs with precise localizations. We find that FRB 190309A is spatially associated with GRB 060502B, with a chance probability of 0.05 when temporal and redshift information is taken into account. Considering the high chance probability (the statistical significance is < 3σ), we examine other observational properties such as the host galaxy, the dispersion measure, and the energy budget of the central engine to check the possibility of their association. Although the available observational information is insufficient to determine whether they are physically associated, it does not rule out such a possibility. As the only pair of FRB and GRB that are spatially associated, it remains an interesting case worthy of further attention

Numerical study on the effects of fluid properties in electrohydrodynamic pulsating jet under constant voltage

Pulsating jet is one of the common working modes in electrohydrodynamic printing (EHDP) that process is highly affected by operating parameters and material properties. In this paper, the processes of pulsating jet for liquids with different physical properties were investigated using numerical simulation. An electrohydrodynamic solver was established, and a charge flux restricting step was adopted to ensure a realistic distribution of free charges. Three various ejection regimes were observed in our simulations: oscillating cone (OC), choked jet (CJ), and stable cone-jet (SJ). We found that three dimensionless numbers relating to liquid properties determined the ejection regime: the Ohnesorge number, Q0εr/Q, and Q0/(QRe). Based on those dimensionless numbers, the roles of liquid properties on pulsating jet (OC and CJ) were analyzed. In OC, the break of the jet is due to the significant oscillation of the Taylor cone, which is mainly affected by viscosity and conductivity. In CJ, the jet emission is terminated by the excessive resistant force in the cone-jet transition region. For liquids with low and medium viscosity, the dominant resistant force is the polarization force or viscous force when εrRe is larger or smaller than 1, respectively. For high viscosity liquids, the viscous force always becomes the major resistance. These results further reveal the physical mechanism of pulsating jet and can be used to guide its application.

Exact mobility edges for almost-periodic CMV matrices via gauge symmetries

We investigate the symmetries of so-called generalized extended CMV matrices. It is well-documented that problems involving reflection symmetries of standard extended CMV matrices can be subtle. We show how to deal with this in an elegant fashion by passing to the class of generalized extended CMV matrices via explicit diagonal unitaries in the spirit of Cantero-Grünbaum-Moral-Velázquez. As an application of these ideas, we construct an explicit family of almost-periodic CMV matrices, which we call the mosaic unitary almost-Mathieu operator, and prove the occurrence of exact mobility edges. That is, we show the existence of energies that separate spectral regions with absolutely continuous and pure point spectrum and exactly calculate them.

Photospheric velocity evolution of SN 2020bvc: signature of $r$-process nucleosynthesis from a collapsar

Whether binary neutron star mergers are the only astrophysical site of rapid neutron-capture process ($r$-process) nucleosynthesis remains unknown. Collapsars associated with long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and hypernovae are promising candidates. Simulations have shown that outflows from collapsar accretion disks can produce enough $r$-process materials to explain the abundances in the universe. However, there is no observational evidence to confirm this result at present. SN 2020bvc is a broad-lined type Ic (Ic-BL) supernova (SN) possibly associated with a low-luminosity GRB. Based on semi-analytic SN emission models with and without $r$-process materials, we perform a fitting to the multi-band light curves and photospheric velocities of SN 2020bvc. We find that in a $r$-process-enriched model the mixing of $r$-process materials slows down the photospheric recession and therefore matches the velocity evolution better. The fitting results show that $r$-process materials with mass of $\approx0.36~M_\odot$ and opacity of $\approx4~\rm cm^2~g^{-1}$ is needed to mix with about half of the SN ejecta. Our fitting results are weakly dependent on the nebular emission. Future statistical analysis of a sample of type Ic-BL SNe helps us understand the contribution of collapsars to the $r$-process abundance.

On the residual Monge-Ampère mass of plurisubharmonic functions with symmetry in $\mathbb{C}^2$

The aim of this paper is to study the residual Monge-Ampère mass of a plurisubharmonic function with isolated singularity at the origin in $\mathbb{C}^2$. We prove that the residual mass is zero if its Lelong number is zero at the origin, provided that it is $S^1$-invariant. This result answers the zero mass conjecture raised by Guedj and Rashkovskii in this special case. More generally, we obtain an estimate on the residual mass by the maximal Lelong number and Lelong number at the origin.

Direct imaging methods for reconstructing a locally rough interface from phaseless total-field data or phased far-field data

This paper is concerned with the problem of inverse scattering of time-harmonic acoustic plane waves by a two-layered medium with a locally rough interface in 2D. A direct imaging method is proposed to reconstruct the locally rough interface from the phaseless total-field data measured on the upper half of the circle with a large radius at a fixed frequency or from the phased far-field data measured on the upper half of the unit circle at a fixed frequency. The presence of the locally rough interface poses challenges in the theoretical analysis of the imaging methods. To address these challenges, a technically involved asymptotic analysis is provided for the relevant oscillatory integrals involved in the imaging methods, based mainly on the techniques and results in our recent work [L. Li, J. Yang, B. Zhang and H. Zhang, arXiv:2208.00456] on the uniform far-field asymptotics of the scattered field for acoustic scattering in a two-layered medium. Finally, extensive numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of our imaging algorithms.

Discriminative Co-Saliency and Background Mining Transformer for Co-Salient Object Detection

Most previous co-salient object detection works mainly focus on extracting co-salient cues via mining the consistency relations across images while ignoring explicit exploration of background regions. In this paper, we propose a Discriminative co-saliency and background Mining Transformer framework (DMT) based on several economical multi-grained correlation modules to explicitly mine both co-saliency and background information and effectively model their discrimination. Specifically, we first propose a region-to-region correlation module for introducing inter-image relations to pixel-wise segmentation features while maintaining computational efficiency. Then, we use two types of pre-defined tokens to mine co-saliency and background information via our proposed contrast-induced pixel-to-token correlation and co-saliency token-to-token correlation modules. We also design a token-guided feature refinement module to enhance the discriminability of the segmentation features under the guidance of the learned tokens. We perform iterative mutual promotion for the segmentation feature extraction and token construction. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. The source code is available at: https://github.com/dragonlee258079/DMT.

Linear wave solutions of a stochastic shallow water model

In this paper, we investigate the wave solutions of a stochastic rotating shallow water model. This approximate model provides an interesting simple description of the interplay between waves and random forcing ensuing either from the wind or coming as the feedback of the ocean on the atmosphere and leading in a very fast way to the selection of some wavelength. This interwoven, yet simple, mechanism explains the emergence of typical wavelength associated to near inertial waves. Ensemble-mean waves that are not in phase with the random forcing are damped at an exponential rate, whose magnitude depends on the random forcing variance. Geostrophic adjustment is also interpreted as a statistical homogenization process in which, in order to conserve potential vorticity, the small-scale component tends to align to the velocity fields to form a statistically homogeneous random field.

Air cold atmospheric plasma with patterns for anaplastic squamous cell carcinoma treatment

In recent years, cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) using inert gas has been successfully applied for biomedicine, such as sterilization, wound healing, skin diseases, and tumor treatment. Here, we reported air cold atmospheric plasma with three different patterns (I. Non: basic square grid structure; II. Square: basic square grid structure + square node; III. Circle: basic square grid structure + circle node) for anaplastic squamous cell carcinoma treatment (VX2 cell line). Various plasma diagnostic techniques were applied to evaluate the physics of air CAP with patterns such as discharge voltage, plasma initial generating process, plasma temperature, and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The direct effects of air CAP with patterns on anaplastic squamous cell carcinoma treatment (VX2 cell line) were investigated in vitro. We also studied the ROS (reactive oxygen species) and RNS (reactive nitrogen species) generation in cultured media released from VX2 cells after the treatment of air CAP with patterns. The results showed that the air CAP with circle-pattern generated more active substances during at 60s treatment time, which resulted in a higher death rate of VX2 cells. These initial observations establish the air CAP with patterns as potential clinical applications for cancer therapy.
