GRB 211211A: a Neutron Star$-$White Dwarf Merger?

The gamma-ray burst GRB 211211A and its associated kilonova-like emission were reported recently. A significant difference between this association event and GRB 170817A/AT 2017gfo is that GRB 211211A has a very long duration. In this paper, we show that this association event may arise from a neutron star$-$white dwarf (NS$-$WD) merger if a magnetar leaves finally in the central engine. Within the NS$-$WD merger, the main burst of GRB 211211A could be produced by magnetic bubble eruptions from toroidal magnetic field amplification of the pre-merger NS. This toroidal field amplification can be induced by the runaway accretion from the WD debris disc if the disc is in low initial entropy and efficient wind. While the extended emission of GRB 211211A is likely involved with magnetic propelling. The observed energetics and duration of the prompt emission of GRB 211211A can be fulfilled in comparison with those of accretion in hydrodynamical thermonuclear simulation, as long as the WD has a mass $\gtrsim1M_{\odot}$. Moreover, if the X-ray plateau in GRB afterglows is due to the magnetar spin-down radiation, GRB optical afterglows and kilonova-like emission can be well jointly modeled combining the standard forward shock with the radioactive decay power of $^{56}{\rm Ni}$ adding a rotational power input from the post-merger magnetar.

GRB 221009A: An ordinary nearby GRB with extraordinary observational properties

The gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A, known as the ``brightest-of-all-time" (BOAT), is the closest energetic burst detected so far, with an energy of $E_{γ,\rm iso} \sim 10^{55}$ ergs. This study aims to assess its compatibility with known GRB energy and luminosity distributions. Our analysis indicates that the energy/luminosity function of GRBs is consistent across various redshift intervals, and that the inclusion of GRB 221009A does not significantly impact the function at low redshifts. Additionally, our evaluation of the best-fitting result of the entire GRB sample suggests that the expected number of GRBs with energy greater than $10^{55}$ ergs at a low redshift is 0.2, so that the emergence of GRB 221009A is consistent with expected energy/luminosity functions within $\sim 2σ$ Poisson fluctuation error, still adhering to the principles of small number statistics. Furthermore, we find that GRB 221009A and other energetic bursts, defined as $E_{γ,\rm iso} \gtrsim10^{54} {\rm ergs}$, exhibit no significant differences in terms of distributions of $T_{90}$, minimum timescale, Amati relation, $E_{\rm γ,iso}$-$E_{\rm X,iso}$ relation, $L_{γ,\rm iso}-Γ_0$ relation, $E_{γ,\rm iso}-Γ_0$ relation, $L_{γ,\rm iso}-E_{\rm p,i}-Γ_0$ relation, and host galaxy properties, compared to normal long GRBs. This suggests that energetic GRBs (including GRB 221009A) and other long GRBs likely have similar progenitor systems and undergo similar energy dissipation and radiation processes. The generation of energetic GRBs may be due to more extreme central engine properties or, more likely, a rarer viewing configuration of a quasi-universal structured jet.

SN 2018gk Revisited: the Photosphere, the Central Engine, And the Putative Dust

In this paper, we perform a comprehensive study for the physical properties of SN 2018gk which is a luminous type IIb supernova (SN). We find that the early-time photospheric velocity vary from a larger value to a smaller value before the photosphere reach a temperature floor. We generalize the photosphere modulus and fit the multi-band light curves (LCs) of SN 2018gk. We find that the $^{56}$Ni mass model require $\sim0.90$ M$_\odot$ of $^{56}$Ni which is larger than the derived ejecta mass ($\sim0.10$ M$_\odot$). Alternatively, we use the magnetar plus $^{56}$Ni and the fallback plus $^{56}$Ni models to fit the LCs of SN 2018gk, finding that the two models can fit the LCs. We favor the magnetar plus $^{56}$Ni since the parameters are rather reasonable ($M_{\rm ej} =1.65$ M$_\odot$, $M_{\rm Ni}=0.05$ M$_\odot$ which is smaller than the upper limit of the value of the $^{56}$Ni mass can by synthesized by the neutrino-powered core collapse SNe $B=6.52\times10^{14}$ G which is comparable to those of luminous and superluminous SNe studied in the literature, and $P_0=10.42$ ms which is comparable to those of luminous SNe), while the validity of the fallback plus $^{56}$Ni model depends on the accretion efficiency ($η$). Therefore, we suggest that SN 2018gk might be a SN IIb mainly powered by a central engine. Finally, we confirm the NIR excesses of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of SN 2018gk at some epochs and constrain the physical properties of the putative dust using the blackbody plus dust emission model.

Approximation of weak geodesics and subharmonicity of Mabuchi energy, II: $ε$-geodesics

The purpose of this article is to study the strict convexity of the Mabuchi functional along a $C^{1,1}$-geodesic, with the aid of the $ε$-geodesics. We proved the $L^2$-convergence of the fiberwise volume element of the $ε$-geodesic. Moreover, the geodesic is proved to be uniformly fiberwise non-degenerate if the Mabuchi functional is $ε$-affine.

Fast Electromagnetic Validations of Large-Scale Digital Coding Metasurfaces Accelerated by Recurrence Rebuild and Retrieval Method

The recurrence rebuild and retrieval method (R3M) is proposed in this paper to accelerate the electromagnetic (EM) validations of large-scale digital coding metasurfaces (DCMs). R3M aims to accelerate the EM validations of DCMs with varied codebooks, which involves the analysis of a group of similar but not identical structures. The method transforms general DCMs to rigorously periodic arrays by replacing each coding unit with the macro unit, which comprises all possible coding states. The system matrix corresponding to the rigorously periodic array is globally shared for DCMs with arbitrary codebooks via implicit retrieval. The discrepancy of the interactions for edge and corner units are precluded by the basis extension of periodic boundaries. Moreover, the hierarchical pattern exploitation (HPE) algorithm is leveraged to efficiently assemble the system matrix for further acceleration. Due to the fully utilization of the rigid periodicity, the computational complexity of R3M-HPE is theoretically lower than that of $\mathcal{H}$-matrix within the same paradigm. Numerical results for two types of DCMs indicate that R3M-HPE is accurate in comparison with commercial software. Besides, R3M-HPE is also compatible with the preconditioning for efficient iterative solutions. The efficiency of R3M-HPE for DCMs outperforms the conventional fast algorithms in both the storage and CPU time cost.

Stochastic data-driven parameterization of unresolved mesoscale eddies

In this work, a stochastic representation based on a physical transport principle is proposed to account for mesoscale eddy effects on the large-scale oceanic circulation. This stochastic framework arises from a decomposition of the Lagrangian velocity into a smooth-in-time component and a highly oscillating noise term. One important characteristic of this random model is that it conserves the total energy of the resolved flow for any realization. Such an energy-preserving representation is successfully implemented in a well established multi-layered quasi-geostrophic dynamical core. The empirical spatial correlation of the unresolved noise is calibrated from the eddy-resolving simulation data. In particular, a stationary correction drift can be introduced in the noise through Girsanov transformation. This non intuitive term appears to be important in reproducing on a coarse mesh the eastwards jet of the wind-driven double-gyre circulation. In addition, a projection method has been proposed to constrain the noise living along the iso-surfaces of the vertical stratification. The resulting noise enables us to improve the intrinsic low-frequency variability of the large-scale current.

Nebula-I: A General Framework for Collaboratively Training Deep Learning Models on Low-Bandwidth Cloud Clusters

The ever-growing model size and scale of compute have attracted increasing interests in training deep learning models over multiple nodes. However, when it comes to training on cloud clusters, especially across remote clusters, huge challenges are faced. In this work, we introduce a general framework, Nebula-I, for collaboratively training deep learning models over remote heterogeneous clusters, the connections between which are low-bandwidth wide area networks (WANs). We took natural language processing (NLP) as an example to show how Nebula-I works in different training phases that include: a) pre-training a multilingual language model using two remote clusters; and b) fine-tuning a machine translation model using knowledge distilled from pre-trained models, which run through the most popular paradigm of recent deep learning. To balance the accuracy and communication efficiency, in Nebula-I, parameter-efficient training strategies, hybrid parallel computing methods and adaptive communication acceleration techniques are jointly applied. Meanwhile, security strategies are employed to guarantee the safety, reliability and privacy in intra-cluster computation and inter-cluster communication. Nebula-I is implemented with the PaddlePaddle deep learning framework, which can support collaborative training over heterogeneous hardware, e.g. GPU and NPU. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework could substantially maximize the training efficiency while preserving satisfactory NLP performance. By using Nebula-I, users can run large-scale training tasks over cloud clusters with minimum developments, and the utility of existed large pre-trained models could be further promoted. We also introduced new state-of-the-art results on cross-lingual natural language inference tasks, which are generated based upon a novel learning framework and Nebula-I.

Modified (hyper-)viscosity for coarse-resolution ocean models

We present a simple parameterization for coarse-resolution ocean models. To replace computationally expensive high-resolution ocean models, we develop a computationally cheap parameterization for coarse-resolution models based solely on the modification of the viscosity term in advection equations. It is meant to reproduce the mean quantities like pressure, velocity, or vorticity computed from a high-resolution reference solution or using observations. We test this new parameterization on a double-gyre quasi-geostrophic model in the eddy-permitting regime. Our results show that the proposed scheme improves significantly the energy statistics and the intrinsic variability on the coarse mesh. This method shall serve as a deterministic basis model for coarse-resolution stochastic parameterizations in future works.

AT2020hur: A Possible Optical Counterpart of FRB 180916B

The physical origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs) remains unclear. Finding multiwavelength counterparts of FRBs can be a breakthrough in understanding their nature. In this work, we perform a systematic search for astronomical transients (ATs) whose positions are consistent with FRBs. We find an unclassified optical transient AT2020hur ($α=01^{\mathrm{h}} 58^{\mathrm{m}} 00.750^{\mathrm{s}} \pm 1$ arcsec, $δ=65^{\circ} 43^{\prime} 00.30^{\prime \prime} \pm 1$ arcsec) that is spatially coincident with the repeating FRB 180916B ($α=01^{\mathrm{h}} 58^{\mathrm{m}} 00.7502^{\mathrm{s}} \pm 2.3$ mas, $δ=65^{\circ} 43^{\prime} 00.3152^{\prime \prime} \pm 2.3$ mas). The chance possibility for the AT2020hur-FRB 180916B association is about 0.04%, which corresponds to a significance of $3.5σ$. We develop a giant flare afterglow model to fit AT2020hur. Although the giant flare afterglow model can interpret the observations of AT2020hur, the derived kinetic energy of such a GF is at least three orders of magnitude larger than that of the typical GF, and there is a lot of fine tuning and coincidences required for this model. Another possible explanation is that AT2020hur might consist of two or more optical flares originating from the FRB source, e.g. fast optical bursts produced by the inverse Compton scattering of FRB emission. Besides, AT2020hur is located in one of the activity windows of FRB 180916B, which is an independent support for the association. This coincidence may be due to the reason that the optical counterpart is subject to the same periodic modulation as FRB 180916B, as implied by the prompt FRB counterparts. Future simultaneous observations of FRBs and their optical counterparts may help reveal their physical origin.

Radiation hardness study on a CMOS pixel sensor for charged particle tracking

A CMOS pixel sensor, named Supix-1, is developed for a pixelated silicon tracker for the Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC) project. The sensor, consisted of nine sectors varying in pixel sizes, diode sizes and geometries, is fabricated with a 180 nm CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) process to study the particle detection performance of enlarged pixels. In this work, the radiation-induced effects on the charge collection of the sensor under the fluence of 1 $\times$ 10^13 1 MeV neq/cm^2 are studied by the measurements with the radioactive source of Fe-55 and the Technology Computer Aided Design (TCAD) simulations, since the radiation hardness of 6.8 $\times$ 10^12 1 MeV neq/cm^2 per year for Non-Ionizing Energy Loss (NIEL) effects is required. In measurements, the sensor gain has been calibrated using the k-$α$ peak of Fe-55 before and after irradiation. The pixel-wise equivalent noise charge (ENC), charge collection efficiency (CCE) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were evaluated. The radiation-induced effects on cluster properties are studied through a self-developed reconstruction algorithm. In TCAD simulations, charge collections in 5 $\times$ 5 pixel matrixes for two typical impinging cases of incident particles were simulated with and without irradiation. Both measurements and simulations indicate that enlarged pixels with area of 21 $μ$m $\times$ 84 $μ$m, though suffering greater loss on sensor performance than small pixels do, still have satisfactory noise and charge collection performance after irradiation for particle tracking in the upcoming collider detectors.

Can a Single Population Account for the Discriminant Properties in Fast Radio Bursts?

To probe this question, we perform a statistical analysis using the first Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) catalog and identify a few discriminant properties between repeating and non-repeating FRBs such as the repetition rate, duration, bandwidth, spectral index, peak luminosity, and potential peak frequency. If repeating and non-repeating FRBs belong to one population, their distribution distinctions for the repetition rate and duration can be explained by the selection effect due to the beamed emission as in Connor et al. (2020). However, we obtain that the distribution distinctions for the spectral index and potentially the peak frequency cannot be explained by the beamed emission within the framework of either the coherent curvature radiation or synchrotron maser emission. This indicates that there could be two populations. We further discuss three possible scenarios for the required two populations.

Cantor Spectrum for CMV Matrices With Almost Periodic Verblunsky Coefficients

We consider extended CMV matrices with analytic quasi-periodic Verblunsky coefficients with Diophantine frequency vector in the perturbatively small coupling constant regime and prove the analyticity of the tongue boundaries. As a consequence we establish that, generically, all gaps of the spectrum that are allowed by the Gap Labelling Theorem are open and hence the spectrum is a Cantor set. We also prove these results for a related class of almost periodic Verblunsky coefficients and present an application to suitable quantum walk models on the integer lattice.

$q$-Supercongruences from squares of basic hypergeometric series

We give some new $q$-supercongruences on truncated forms of squares of basic hypergeometric series. Most of them are modulo the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial, and two of them are modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial. The main ingredients of our proofs are the creative microscoping method, a lemma of El Bachraoui, and the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials. We also propose several related conjectures for further study.

Piecewise-analytic interfaces with weakly singular points of arbitrary order always scatter

It is proved that an inhomogeneous medium whose boundary contains a weakly singular point of arbitrary order scatters every incoming wave. Similarly, a compactly supported source term with weakly singular points on the boundary always radiates acoustic waves. These results imply the absence of non-scattering energies and non-radiating sources in a domain that is not $C^\infty$-smooth. Local uniqueness results with a single far-field pattern are obtained for inverse source and inverse medium scattering problems. Our arguments provide a sufficient condition of the surface under which solutions to the Helmholtz equation admits no analytical continuation.

Rotating shallow water flow under location uncertainty with a structure-preserving discretization

We introduce a physically relevant stochastic representation of the rotating shallow water equations. The derivation relies mainly on a stochastic transport principle and on a decomposition of the fluid flow into a large-scale component and a noise term that models the unresolved flow components. As for the classical (deterministic) system, this scheme, referred to as modelling under location uncertainty (LU), conserves the global energy of any realization and provides the possibility to generate an ensemble of physically relevant random simulations with a good trade-off between the model error representation and the ensemble's spread. To maintain numerically the energy conservation feature, we combine an energy (in space) preserving discretization of the underlying deterministic model with approximations of the stochastic terms that are based on standard finite volume/difference operators. The LU derivation, built from the very same conservation principles as the usual geophysical models, together with the numerical scheme proposed can be directly used in existing dynamical cores of global numerical weather prediction models. The capabilities of the proposed framework is demonstrated for an inviscid test case on the f-plane and for a barotropically unstable jet on the sphere.

Subtrees and BC-subtrees of maximum degree no more than k in trees

The subtrees and BC-subtrees (subtrees where any two leaves are at even distance apart) have been extensively studied in recent years. Such structures, under special constraints on degrees, have applications in many fields. Through an approach based on generating functions, we present recursive algorithms for enumerating various subtrees and BC-subtrees of maximum degree $\leq k$ in trees. The algorithms are illustrated through detailed examples. We also briefly discuss, in trees, the densities of subtrees (resp.~BC-subtrees) of maximum degree $\leq k(\geq 2)$ among all subtrees (resp.~BC-subtrees).

X-ray Flares Raising upon Magnetar Plateau as an Implication of a Surrounding Disk of Newborn Magnetized Neutron Star

The X-ray flares have usually been ascribed to long-lasting activities of the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), e.g., fallback accretion. The GRB X-ray plateaus, however, favor a millisecond magnetar central engine. The fallback accretion can be significantly suppressed due to the propeller effect of a magnetar. Therefore, if the propeller regime cannot resist the mass flow onto the surface of the magnetar efficiently, the X-ray flares raise upon the magnetar plateau would be hinted. In this work, such peculiar cases are connected to the accretion process of a magnetar, and an implication for magnetar-disc structure is given. We investigate the repeating accretion process with multi-flare GRB 050730, and give a discussion for the accreting induced variation of the magnetic field in GRB 111209A. Two or more flares exhibit in the GRB 050730, GRB 060607A, and GRB 140304A; by adopting magnetar mass $M=1.4~ M_\odot$ and radius $R=12~\rm km$, the average mass flow rates of the corresponding surrounding disk are $3.53\times 10^{-4}~M_\odot~\rm s^{-1}$, $4.23\times 10^{-4}~M_\odot~\rm s^{-1}$, and $4.33\times 10^{-4}~M_\odot~\rm s^{-1}$, and the corresponding average sizes of the magnetosphere are $5.01~\rm \times10^{6} cm$, $6.45~\rm \times10^{6} cm$, and $1.09~\rm \times10^{7} cm$, respectively. A statistic analysis that contains 8 GRBs within 12 flares shows that the total mass loading in single flare is $\sim 2\times 10^{-5}~M_{\odot}$. In the lost mass of a disk, there are about 0.1% used to feed a collimated jet.

The Magnetar Model and the Ejecta--Circumstellar-Matter Interaction Model for 31 Luminous, Rapidly Evolving Optical Transients

We study 31 luminous, rapidly evolving optical transients (REOTs), and use the magnetar model and the ejecta--circumstellar-matter (CSM) interaction (CSI) model to fit their multiband light curves. We find that 28 events can be fitted by the magnetar model. and the derived masses ($\sim0.05$--5.58\,M$_\odot$) are consistent with that of stripped and ultrastripped core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). On the other hand, the CSI model can fit 25 events; the derived ejecta masses are $\sim 3$--30\,M$_\odot$, consistent with that of SNe~Ibn. The results, together with the fact that many luminous REOTs have been confirmed to be luminous SNe~IIb/Ib/c or Ibn/IIn, suggest that at least a fraction of luminous REOTs spectroscopically unclassified might be rapidly evolving SNe~Ib/Ic or Ibn. Three events in the sample cannot be explained by the two models we use. We expect that future intense photometry, spectroscopic classifications, and systematic light-curve modeling of luminous REOTs will shed more light on their nature.
