Realization of cold atom gyroscope in space

High-precision gyroscopes in space are essential for fundamental physics research and navigation. Due to its potential high precision, the cold atom gyroscope is expected to be the next generation of gyroscopes in space. Here, we report the first realization of a cold atom gyroscope, which was demonstrated by the atom interferometer installed in the China Space Station (CSS) as a payload. By compensating for CSS's high dynamic rotation rate using a built-in piezoelectric mirror, spatial interference fringes in the interferometer are successfully obtained. Then, the optimized ratio of the Raman laser's angles is derived, the coefficients of the piezoelectric mirror are self-calibrated in orbit, and various systemic effects are corrected. We achieve a rotation measurement resolution of 50*10^-6 rad/s for a single shot and 17*10^-6 rad/s for an average number of 32. The measured rotation is (-1142+/-29)*10^-6 rad/s and is compatible with that recorded by the classical gyroscope of the CSS. This study paves the way for developing high-precision cold atom gyroscopes in space.

Universal Quench Dynamics of an Open Quantum System

Taking the quantum Kitaev chain as an example, we have studied the universal dynamical behaviors resulting from quantum criticality under the condition of environmental temperature quench. Our findings reveal that when the quantum parameter is at its critical value, both the excess excitation density at the end of linear quench and the subsequent free relaxation behavior exhibit universal scaling behaviors. The scaling laws observed upon quenching to the zero-temperature quantum critical point and non-zero temperature points exhibit distinct scaling exponents, which are all intimately related to the dynamical critical exponents of the quantum phase transition. Additionally, for the case of linear quench to finite temperatures, we have also discovered an intrinsic universal dynamical behavior that is independent of quantum criticality. Our research offers profound insights into the relationship between quantum criticality and nonequilibrium dynamics from two perspectives: Kibble-Zurek-like scaling behavior and free relaxation dynamics. Notably, the Kibble-Zurek-like scaling behavior in this context differs from the standard Kibble-Zurek mechanism. These two aspects jointly open up a new avenue for us to understand quantum criticality through real-time dynamical behavior, even at finite temperatures.

Optimization of noncollinear magnetic ordering temperature in Y-type hexaferrite by machine learning

Searching the optimal doping compositions of the Y-type hexaferrite Ba2Mg2Fe12O22 remains a long-standing challenge for enhanced non-collinear magnetic transition temperature (TNC). Instead of the conventional trial-and-error approach, the composition-property descriptor is established via a data driven machine learning method named SISSO (sure independence screening and sparsifying operator). Based on the chosen efficient and physically interpretable descriptor, a series of Y-type hexaferrite compositions are predicted to hold high TNC, among which the BaSrMg0.28Co1.72Fe10Al2O22 is then experimentally validated. Test results indicate that, under appropriate external magnetic field conditions, the TNC of this composition reaches up to reaches up to 568 K, and its magnetic transition temperature is also elevated to 735 K. This work offers a machine learning-based route to develop room temperature single phase multiferroics for device applications.

Probing critical spin fluctuations with a composite magnetoelectric method: A case study on a Kitaev spin liquid candidate Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$

In correlated quantum materials, divergent critical fluctuations near the quantum critical point are often closely associated with exotic quantum phases of matter, such as unconventional superconductivity and quantum spin liquids. Here we present a simple yet highly sensitive composite magnetoelectric (ME) method for detecting the critical spin fluctuations in quantum magnets. The ME signal is proportional the magnetostriction coefficient, which directly probes the product of magnetization and spin-spin correlation. As a demonstration, the composite ME method is applied to a Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$, which shows signs of magnetic field-induced quantum criticality. Notably, the ME signal prominently diverges at the magnetic field-induced tricritical points, particularly at a tricritical point that lies in close proximity to a zero-temperature quantum critical point. A crucial aspect of these tricritical points is their tunability through the modification of the in-plane magnetic field's direction. The direction of magnetic field can thus serve as a handful yet important tuning parameter, alongside pressure and chemical doping, for searching quantum critical points in quantum magnets with pronounced magnetic anisotropy.

Integrated Modeling, Verification, and Code Generation for Unmanned Aerial Systems

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are currently widely used in safety-critical fields such as industrial production, military operations, and disaster relief. Due to the diversity and complexity of application scenarios, UAS have become increasingly intricate. The challenge of designing and implementing highly reliable UAS while effectively controlling development costs and enhancing efficiency is a pressing issue faced by both academia and industry. Addressing this challenge, this paper aims to investigate an integrated approach to modeling, verification, and code generation for UAS. The paper begins by utilizing Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) to model the UAS, proposing a set of generic UAS models. Based on these models, formal specifications are written to describe the system's safety properties and functions. Finally, the paper introduces a method for generating flight controller code for UAS based on the verified models. Experiments conducted with the proposed method demonstrate its effectiveness in identifying potential vulnerabilities in the UAS during the early design phase and in generating viable flight controller code from the verified models. This approach can enhance the efficiency of designing and verifying high-reliability UAS.

Annealing-tunable charge density wave in the kagome antiferromagnet FeGe

The unprecedented phenomenon that a charge density wave (CDW) emerges inside the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase indicates an unusual CDW mechanism associated with magnetism in FeGe. Here, we demonstrate that both the CDW and magnetism of FeGe can be effectively tuned through post-growth annealing treatments. Instead of the short-range CDW reported earlier, a long-range CDW order is realized below 110 K in single crystals annealed at \SI{320}{\degreeCelsius} for over 48 h. The CDW and AFM transition temperatures appear to be inversely correlated with each other. The entrance of the CDW phase significantly reduces the critical field of the spin-flop transition, whereas the CDW transition remains stable against minor variations in magnetic orders such as annealing-induced magnetic clusters and spin-canting transitions. Single-crystal x-ray diffraction measurements reveal substantial disorder on the Ge1 site, which is characterized by displacement of the Ge1 atom from Fe$_3$Ge layer along the $c$ axis and can be reversibly modified by the annealing process. The observed annealing-tunable CDW and magnetic orders can be well understood in terms of disorder on the Ge1 site. Our study provides a vital starting point for the exploration of the unconventional CDW mechanism in FeGe and of kagome materials in general.

Low-Temperature Transport Property of Spin-1/2 Random Heisenberg Chains

Quenched disorders can strongly influence the physical properties of quantum many-body systems. The real-space strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG) analysis has shown that the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain is controlled by the infinite-randomness fixed point (IRFP) and forms a random singlet (RS) ground state. Motivated by recent thermal transport experiments on the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet copper benzoate [B. Y. Pan et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 129}, 167201 (2022)], we adapt the SDRG to study the low-temperature properties of the random Heisenberg chain by assuming that its low-energy excited states are captured by the parent Hamiltonian of the RS ground state as well. We find that while the specific heat coefficient and the uniform magnetic susceptibility scale as $C/T\sim T^{-α_{c}}$ and $χ\sim T^{-α_{s}}$ with $0<α_{c,s}<1$, indicating a divergent low-energy density of states, the thermal and the spin conductivities scale as $κ/T\sim T$ and $σ_{s}\sim T$, which implies a vanishing density of extended states in the low-energy limit. We believe that such a disparity in the thermodynamic and transport properties is a common feature of random systems controlled by the IRFP.

An Agile Formal Specification Language Design Based on K Framework

Formal Methods (FMs) are currently essential for verifying the safety and reliability of software systems. However, the specification writing in formal methods tends to be complex and challenging to learn, requiring familiarity with various intricate formal specification languages and verification technologies. In response to the increasing complexity of software frameworks, existing specification writing methods fall short in meeting agility requirements. To address this, this paper introduces an Agile Formal Specification Language (ASL). The ASL is defined based on the K Framework and YAML Ain't Markup Language (YAML). The design of ASL incorporates agile design principles, making the writing of formal specifications simpler, more efficient, and scalable. Additionally, a specification translation algorithm is developed, capable of converting ASL into K formal specification language that can be executed for verification. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that the proposed method significantly reduces the code size needed for specification writing, enhancing agility in formal specification writing.

Magneto-Induced Topological Phase Transition in Inverted InAs/GaSb Bilayers

We report a magneto-induced topological phase transition in inverted InAs/GaSb bilayers from a quantum spin Hall insulator to a normal insulator. We utilize a dual-gated Corbino device in which the degree of band inversion, or equivalently the electron and hole densities, can be continuously tuned. We observe a topological phase transition around the magnetic field where a band crossing occurs, that is accompanied by a bulk-gap closure characterized by a bulk conductance peak (BCP). In another set of experiments, we study the transition under a tilted magnetic field (tilt angle $θ$). We observe the characteristic magneto-conductance around BCP as a function of $θ$, which dramatically depends on the density of the bilayers. In a relatively deep-inversion (hence a higher density) regime, where the electron-hole hybridization dominates the excitonic interaction, the BCP grows with $θ$. On the contrary, in a shallowly-inverted (a lower density) regime, where the excitonic interaction dominates the hybridization, the BCP is suppressed indicating a smooth crossover without a gap closure. This suggests the existence of a low-density, correlated insulator with spontaneous symmetry breaking near the critical point. Our highly controllable electron-hole system offers an ideal platform to study interacting topological states as proposed by recent theories.

Fault Detection and Tolerant Control for Aero2 2D0F Two-rotor Helicopter

Stability and satisfactory performance are critical control requirements for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications. While conventional control systems for UAVs aim to ensure flight stability and safe operation while accomplishing tasks, UAVs may experience various flight faults that can degrade performance or, in severe cases, lead to instability. Unsatisfactory performance or instability of a UAV poses risks to lives, properties, and the flying environment. Therefore, it's essential to design a system capable of detecting faults, pinpointing their location, assessing their severity, and using this information to mitigate them, enabling the vehicle to continue operating satisfactorily. Despite the importance of analysing fault performance to select optimal fault detection and tolerance strategies, limited research has been conducted, especially with real systems. This study examines the performance of a 2-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) bi-rotor helicopter's control system in the presence of various actuator faults. Results from different fault conditions demonstrate that faults degrade the performance of conventional control systems on UAVs and introduce vibrations into the system, particularly when faults cause asymmetry or imbalance. However, additional experiments reveal that effective fault diagnosis and accommodation methods can help maintain satisfactory system performance despite the presence of faults.

Joint Port Selection and Beamforming Design for Fluid Antenna Assisted Integrated Data and Energy Transfer

Integrated data and energy transfer (IDET) has been of fundamental importance for providing both wireless data transfer (WDT) and wireless energy transfer (WET) services towards low-power devices. Fluid antenna (FA) is capable of exploiting the huge spatial diversity of the wireless channel to enhance the receive signal strength, which is more suitable for the tiny-size low-power devices having the IDET requirements. In this letter, a multiuser FA assisted IDET system is studied and the weighted energy harvesting power at energy receivers (ERs) is maximized by jointly optimizing the port selection and transmit beamforming design under imperfect channel state information (CSI), while the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint for each data receiver (DR) is satisfied. An efficient algorithm is proposed to obtain the suboptimal solutions for the non-convex problem. Simulation results evaluate the performance of the FA-IDET system, while also demonstrate that FA outperforms the multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) counterpart in terms of the IDET performance, as long as the port number is large enough.

Surface Chern-Simons theory for third-order topological insulators and superconductors

Three-dimensional 3rd-order topological insulators (TOTIs) and superconductors (TOTSCs), as the highestorder topological phases hosting zero corner modes in physical dimension, has sparked extensive research interest. However, such topological states have not been discovered in reality due to the lack of experimental schemes of realization. Here, we propose a novel surface Chern-Simons (CS) theory for 3rd-order topological phases, and show that the theory enables a feasible and systematic design of TOTIs and TOTSCs. We show that the emergence of zero Dirac (Majorana) corner modes is entirely captured by an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ CS term that can be further characterized by a novel two-particle Wess-Zumino (WZ) term uncovered here in the surfaces of three-dimensional topological materials. Importantly, our proposed CS term characterization and two-particle WZ term mechanism provide a unique perspective to design TOTIs (TOTSCs) in terms of minimal ingredients, feasibly guiding the search for underlying materials, with promising candidates being discussed. This work shall advance both the theoretical and experimental research for highest-order topological matters.

Emergent conformal boundaries from finite-entanglement scaling in matrix product states

The use of finite entanglement scaling with matrix product states (MPS) has become a crucial tool for studying 1+1d critical lattice theories, especially those with emergent conformal symmetry. We argue that finite entanglement introduces a relevant deformation in the critical theory. As a result, the bipartite entanglement Hamiltonian defined from the MPS can be understood as a boundary conformal field theory with a physical and an entanglement boundary. We are able to exploit the symmetry properties of the MPS to engineer the physical conformal boundary condition. The entanglement boundary, on the other hand, is related to the concrete lattice model and remains invariant under this relevant perturbation. Using critical lattice models described by the Ising, Potts, and free compact boson CFTs, we illustrate the influence of the symmetry and the relevant deformation on the conformal boundaries in the entanglement spectrum.

Highly Available Blockchain Nodes With N-Version Design

As all software, blockchain nodes are exposed to faults in their underlying execution stack. Unstable execution environments can disrupt the availability of blockchain nodes interfaces, resulting in downtime for users. This paper introduces the concept of N-version Blockchain nodes. This new type of node relies on simultaneous execution of different implementations of the same blockchain protocol, in the line of Avizienis' N-version programming vision. We design and implement an N-version blockchain node prototype in the context of Ethereum, called N-ETH. We show that N-ETH is able to mitigate the effects of unstable execution environments and significantly enhance availability under environment faults. To simulate unstable execution environments, we perform fault injection at the system-call level. Our results show that existing Ethereum node implementations behave asymmetrically under identical instability scenarios. N-ETH leverages this asymmetric behavior available in the diverse implementations of Ethereum nodes to provide increased availability, even under our most aggressive fault-injection strategies. We are the first to validate the relevance of N-version design in the domain of blockchain infrastructure. From an industrial perspective, our results are of utmost importance for businesses operating blockchain nodes, including Google, ConsenSys, and many other major blockchain companies.

Characterizing Floquet topological phases by quench dynamics: A multiple-subsystem approach

We investigate the dynamical characterization theory for periodically driven systems in which Floquet topology can be fully detected by emergent topological patterns of quench dynamics in momentum subspaces called band-inversion surfaces. We improve the results of a recent work [Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 183001 (2020)] and propose a more flexible scheme to characterize a generic class of $d$-dimensional Floquet topological phases classified by $\mathbb{Z}$-valued invariants by applying a quench along an arbitrary spin-polarization axis. Our basic idea is that by disassembling the Floquet system into multiple static subsystems that are periodic in quasienergy, a full characterization of Floquet topological phases reduces to identifying a series of bulk topological invariants for time-independent Hamiltonians, which greatly enhances the convenience and flexibility of the measurement. We illustrate the scheme by numerically analyzing two experimentally realizable models in two and three dimensions, respectively, and adopting two different but equivalent viewpoints to examine the dynamical characterization. Finally, considering the imperfection of experiment, we demonstrate that the present scheme can also be applied to a general situation where the initial state is not completely polarized. This study provides an immediately implementable approach for dynamically classifying Floquet topological phases in ultracold atoms or other quantum simulators.

Electrical and thermal transport properties of kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs)

The interplay between lattice geometry, band topology and electronic correlations in the newly discovered kagome compounds AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) makes this family a novel playground to investigate emergent quantum phenomena, such as unconventional superconductivity, chiral charge density wave and electronic nematicity. These exotic quantum phases naturally leave nontrivial fingerprints in transport properties of AV$_3$Sb$_5$, both in electrical and thermal channels, which are prominent probes to uncover the underlying mechanisms. In this brief review, we highlight the unusual electrical and thermal transport properties observed in the unconventional charge ordered state of AV3Sb5, including giant anomalous Hall, anomalous Nernst, ambipolar Nernst and anomalous thermal Hall effects. Connections of these anomalous transport properties to time-reversal symmetry breaking, topological and multiband fermiology, as well as electronic nematicity, are also discussed. Finally, a perspective together with challenges of this rapid growing field are given.
