Topological spin-orbit-coupled fermions beyond rotating wave approximation

The realization of spin-orbit-coupled ultracold gases has driven a wide range of researches and is typically based on the rotating wave approximation (RWA). By neglecting the counter-rotating terms, RWA characterizes a single near-resonant spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a two-level system. Here, we propose and experimentally realize a new scheme for achieving a pair of two-dimensional (2D) SO couplings for ultracold fermions beyond RWA. This work not only realizes the first anomalous Floquet topological Fermi gas beyond RWA, but also significantly improves the lifetime of the 2D-SO-coupled Fermi gas. Based on pump-probe quench measurements, we observe a deterministic phase relation between two sets of SO couplings, which is characteristic for our beyond-RWA scheme and enables the two SO couplings to be simultaneously tuned to the optimum 2D configurations. We observe intriguing band topology by measuring two-ring band-inversion surfaces, quantitatively consistent with a Floquet topological Fermi gas in the regime of high Chern numbers. Our study can open an avenue to explore exotic SO physics and anomalous topological states based on long-lived SO-coupled ultracold fermions.

Comprehensive investigation of Quantum Oscillations in Semimetal Using an ac Composite Magnetoelectric Technique with Ultrahigh Sensitivity

Quantum oscillation (QO), a physical phenomenon that reflects the characteristics of the Fermi surface and transport fermions, has been extensively observed in metals and semimetals through various approaches, like magnetostriction, magnetization, resistivity, and thermoelectric power. However, only some allowed oscillation frequencies can be revealed by each individual method, particularly in semimetals with intricate Fermi pockets and associated magnetic breakdown phenomena. In this paper, we present the application of an ac composite magnetoelectric (ME) technique to measure the QOs of a topological nodal-line semimetal, ZrSiS, which possesses six fundamental QO frequencies. By employing the ME technique with a maximum magnetic field of 13 T and a minimum temperature of 2 K, we are able to capture all the fundamental frequencies and most of the permissible magnetic breakdown frequencies. In comparison, some of the frequencies were missing in the aforementioned four methods under identical measurement conditions. Remarkably, a series of magnetic breakdown frequencies around 8000 T were revealed even in a magnetic field as low as 7.5 T. These findings highlight the ME technique as an ultrahigh-sensitive tool for studying Dirac Fermions and other topological semimetals with complex Fermi surfaces.

Chaos Engineering of Ethereum Blockchain Clients

In this paper, we present ChaosETH, a chaos engineering approach for resilience assessment of Ethereum blockchain clients. ChaosETH operates in the following manner: First, it monitors Ethereum clients to determine their normal behavior. Then, it injects system call invocation errors into one single Ethereum client at a time, and observes the behavior resulting from perturbation. Finally, ChaosETH compares the behavior recorded before, during, and after perturbation to assess the impact of the injected system call invocation errors. The experiments are performed on the two most popular Ethereum client implementations: GoEthereum and Nethermind. We assess the impact of 22 different system call errors on those Ethereum clients with respect to 15 application-level metrics. Our results reveal a broad spectrum of resilience characteristics of Ethereum clients w.r.t. system call invocation errors, ranging from direct crashes to full resilience. The experiments clearly demonstrate the feasibility of applying chaos engineering principles to blockchain systems.

Spin-phonon scattering-induced low thermal conductivity in a van der Waals layered ferromagnet Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$

Layered van der Waals (vdW) magnets are prominent playgrounds for developing magnetoelectric, magneto-optic and spintronic devices. In spintronics, particularly in spincaloritronic applications, low thermal conductivity ($κ$) is highly desired. Here, by combining thermal transport measurements with density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate low $κ$ down to 1 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ in a typical vdW ferromagnet Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$. In the paramagnetic state, development of magnetic fluctuations way above $T_\mathrm{c}=$ 33 K strongly reduces $κ$ via spin-phonon scattering, leading to low $κ\sim$ 1 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ over a wide temperature range, in comparable to that of amorphous silica. In the magnetically ordered state, emergence of resonant magnon-phonon scattering limits $κ$ below $\sim$ 2 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$, which would be three times larger if magnetic scatterings were absent. Application of magnetic fields strongly suppresses the spin-phonon scattering, giving rise to large enhancements of $κ$. Our calculations well capture these complex behaviours of $κ$ by taking the temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent spin-phonon scattering into account. Realization of low $κ$ which is easily tunable by magnetic fields in Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$, may further promote spincaloritronic applications of vdW magnets. Our theoretical approach may also provide a generic understanding of spin-phonon scattering, which appears to play important roles in various systems.

Special Transition and Extraordinary Phase on the Surface of a Two-Dimensional Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Continuous phase transitions exhibit richer critical phenomena on the surface than in the bulk, because distinct surface universality classes can be realized at the same bulk critical point by tuning the surface interactions. The exploration of surface critical behavior provides a window looking into higher-dimensional boundary conformal field theories. In this work, we study the surface critical behavior of a two-dimensional (2D) quantum critical Heisenberg model by tuning the surface coupling strength, and discover a direct special transition on the surface from the ordinary phase into an extraordinary phase. The extraordinary phase has a long-range antiferromagnetic order on the surface, in sharp contrast to the logarithmic decaying spin correlations in the 3D classical O(3) model. The special transition point has a new set of critical exponents, $y_{s}=0.86(4)$ and $η_{\parallel}=-0.33(1)$, which are distinct from the special transition of the classical O(3) model and indicate a new surface universality class of the 3D O(3) Wilson-Fisher theory.

Charge fluctuations above $T_\mathrm{CDW}$ revealed by glasslike thermal transport in kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs)

We present heat capacity, electrical and thermal transport measurements of kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs). In all three compounds, development of short-range charge fluctuations above the charge density wave (CDW) transition temperature $T_\mathrm{CDW}$ strongly scatters phonons via electron-phonon coupling, leading to glasslike phonon heat transport, i.e., phonon thermal conductivity decreases weakly upon cooling. Once the long-range charge order sets in below $T_\mathrm{CDW}$, short-range charge fluctuations are quenched, and the typical Umklapp scattering dominated phonon heat transport is recovered. The charge-fluctuations-induced glasslike phonon thermal conductivity implies sizable electron-phonon coupling in $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$.

Electrical and thermal transport properties of kagome metals $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ ($A$ = Rb, Cs)

We report electrical and thermal transport properties of single crystalline kagome metals $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ ($A$ = Rb, Cs). Different from the structural similar kagome superconductors $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$, no charge density wave instabilities are found in $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$. At low temperatures below 5 K, signatures of superconductivity appear in $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ as seen in magnetization measurements. However, bulk superconductivity is not evidenced by specific heat results. Similar to $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$, $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ show nonlinear magnetic field dependence of the Hall effect below about 70 K, pointing to a multiband nature. Unlike $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ in which phonons and electron-phonon coupling play important roles in thermal transport, the thermal conductivity in $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ is dominated by electronic contributions. Moreover, our calculated electronic structure suggests that van Hove singularities are sitting well above the Fermi energy. Compared with $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$, the absence of charge orders in $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ is closely associated with minor contributions from electron-phonon coupling and/or van Hove singularities.

Two dimensional vertex-decorated Lieb lattice with exact mobility edges and robust flat bands

The mobility edge (ME) that marks the energy separating extended and localized states is a central concept in understanding the metal-insulator transition induced by disordered or quasiperiodic potentials. MEs have been extensively studied in three dimensional disorder systems and one-dimensional quasiperiodic systems. However, the studies of MEs in two dimensional (2D) systems are rare. Here we propose a class of 2D vertex-decorated Lieb lattice models with quasiperiodic potentials only acting on the vertices of a (extended) Lieb lattice. By mapping these models to the 2D Aubry-André model, we obtain exact expressions of MEs and the localization lengths of localized states, and further demonstrate that the flat bands remain unaffected by the quasiperiodic potentials. Finally, we propose a highly feasible scheme to experimentally realize our model in a quantum dot array. Our results open the door to studying and realizing exact MEs and robust flat bands in 2D systems.

Unified characterization for higher-order topological phase transitions

Higher-order topological phase transitions (HOTPTs) are associated with closing either the bulk energy gap (type-I) or boundary energy gap (type-II) without changing symmetry, and conventionally the both transitions are captured in real space and characterized separately. Here we propose a momentum-space topological characterization of the HOTPTs, which unifies the both types of topological transitions and enables a precise detection by quench dynamics. Our unified characterization is based on a novel correspondence between the mass domain walls on real-space boundaries and the higher-order band-inversion surfaces (BIS) which are characteristic interfaces in the momentum subspace. The topological transitions occur when momentum-space topological nodes, dubbed higher-order topological charges, cross the higher-order BISs after proper projection. Particularly, the bulk (boundary) gap closes when all (part of) topological charges cross the BISs, characterizing the type-I (type-II) HOTPTs. These distinct dynamical behaviours of higher-order topological charges can be feasibly measured from quench dynamics driven with control in experiments. Our work opens an avenue to characterize and detect the two types of HOTPTs within a unified framework, and shall advance the research in both theory and experiment.

Fraudulent User Detection Via Behavior Information Aggregation Network (BIAN) On Large-Scale Financial Social Network

Financial frauds cause billions of losses annually and yet it lacks efficient approaches in detecting frauds considering user profile and their behaviors simultaneously in social network . A social network forms a graph structure whilst Graph neural networks (GNN), a promising research domain in Deep Learning, can seamlessly process non-Euclidean graph data . In financial fraud detection, the modus operandi of criminals can be identified by analyzing user profile and their behaviors such as transaction, loaning etc. as well as their social connectivity. Currently, most GNNs are incapable of selecting important neighbors since the neighbors' edge attributes (i.e., behaviors) are ignored. In this paper, we propose a novel behavior information aggregation network (BIAN) to combine the user behaviors with other user features. Different from its close "relatives" such as Graph Attention Networks (GAT) and Graph Transformer Networks (GTN), it aggregates neighbors based on neighboring edge attribute distribution, namely, user behaviors in financial social network. The experimental results on a real-world large-scale financial social network dataset, DGraph, show that BIAN obtains the 10.2% gain in AUROC comparing with the State-Of-The-Art models.

Dynamical detection of mean-field topological phases in an interacting Chern insulator

Interactions generically have important effects on the topological quantum phases. For a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator, the presence of interactions can qualitatively change the topological phase diagram which, however, is typically hard to measure in the experiment. Here we propose a novel scheme based on quench dynamics to detect the mean-field topological phase diagram of an interacting Chern insulator described by QAH-Hubbard model, with nontrivial dynamical quantum physics being uncovered. We focus on the dynamical properties of the system at a weak to intermediate Hubbard interaction which mainly induces a ferromagnetic order under the mean-field level. Remarkably, three characteristic times $t_s$, $t_c$, and $t^*$ are found in the quench dynamics. The first two capture the emergence of dynamical self-consistent particle density and dynamical topological phase transition respectively, while the last one gives a linear scaling time on the topological phase boundaries. A more interesting result is that $t_s>t^*>t_c$ ($t^*<t_s<t_c$) occurs in repulsive (attractive) interaction and the Chern number is determined by any two characteristic time scales when the system is quenched from an initial nearly fully polarized state to the topologically nontrivial regimes, showing a dynamical way to determine equilibrium mean-field topological phase diagram via the time scales. Experimentally, the measurement of $t_s$ is challenging while $t_c$ and $t^*$ can be directly readout by measuring the spin polarizations of four Dirac points and the time-dependent particle density, respectively. Our work reveals the novel interacting effects on the topological phases and shall promote the experimental observation.

Measurement of $^{19}$F($p$,$γ$)$^{20}$Ne reaction suggests CNO break-out in first stars

The origin of calcium production in the first stars (Pop III stars), which formed out of the primordial matter of the Big Bang, and their fates, remain most fascinating mysteries in astrophysics. Advanced nuclear burning and supernovae were thought to be the dominant source of the Ca production seen in all stars. Here we report on a qualitatively different path to Ca production through break-out from the "warm" carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle. We extend direct measurement of the $^{19}$F($p$, $γ$)$^{20}$Ne break-out reaction down to an unprecedentedly low energy point of 186 keV and discover a key resonance at 225 keV. In the domain of astrophysical interest, at around 0.1 giga kelvin, this thermonuclear $^{19}$F($p$,$γ$)$^{20}$Ne rate is up to a factor of 7.4 larger than the previous recommended rate. Our stellar models show a stronger break-out during stellar hydrogen burning than thought before, and may reveal the nature of Ca production in Pop III stars imprinted on the oldest known ultra-iron poor star, SMSS0313-6708. This result from the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, the deepest laboratory in the world, offering an environment with extremely low cosmic-ray induced background, has far-reaching implications on our understanding of how the first stars evolve and die. Our rate showcases the impact that faint Pop III star supernovae can have on the nucleosynthesis observed in the oldest known stars and first galaxies, key mission targets of the James Webb Space Telescope.

Sublattice extraordinary-log phase and new special point of the antiferromagnetic Potts model

We study the surface criticality of a three-dimensional classical antiferromagnetic Potts model, whose bulk critical behaviors belongs to the XY model because of emergent O(2) symmetry. We find that the surface antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighboring interactions can drive the extraordinary-log phase to the ordinary phase, the transition between the two phases belongs to the universality class of the well-known special transition of the XY model. Further strengthening the surface next-nearest neighboring interactions, the extraordinary-log phase reappears, but the main critical behaviors are dominated on the sublattices of the model; the special point between the ordinary phase and the sublattice extraordinary-log phase belongs to a new universality class.

Dipolar Spin Liquid Ending with Quantum Critical Point in a Gd-based Triangular Magnet

By performing experiment and model studies on a triangular-lattice dipolar magnet KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ (KBGB), we find the highly frustrated magnet with a planar anisotropy hosts a strongly fluctuating dipolar spin liquid (DSL), which originates from the intriguing interplay between dipolar and Heisenberg interactions. The DSL constitutes an extended regime in the field-temperature phase diagram, which gets lowered in temperature as field increases and eventually ends with an unconventional quantum critical point (QCP) at $B_c\simeq 0.75$~T. Based on dipolar Heisenberg model calculations, we identify the DSL as a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase with emergent U(1) symmetry. Due to the tremendous entropy accumulation that can be related to the strong BKT and quantum fluctuations, unprecedented magnetic cooling effects are observed in the DSL regime and particularly near the QCP, making KBGB a superior dipolar coolant to commercial Gd-based refrigerants. We establish the phase diagram for triangular-lattice dipolar quantum magnets where emergent symmetry plays an essential role, and provide a basis and opens an avenue for their applications in sub-Kelvin refrigeration.

Finite-Size Scaling Theory at a Self-Dual Quantum Critical Point

The nondivergence of the generalized Grüneisen ratio (GR) at a quantum critical point (QCP) has been proposed to be a universal thermodynamic signature of self-duality. In this work, we study how the Kramers-Wannier-type self-duality manifests itself in the finite-size scaling behavior of thermodynamic quantities in the quantum critical regime. While the self-duality cannot be realized as a unitary transformation in the total Hilbert space for the Hamiltonian with the periodic boundary condition, it can be implemented in certain symmetry sectors with proper boundary conditions. Therefore, the GR and the transverse magnetization of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model exhibit different finite-size scaling behaviors in different sectors. This implies that the numerical diagnosis of self-dual QCP requires identifying the proper symmetry sectors.

All-Electron APW+${lo}$ calculation of magnetic molecules with the SIRIUS domain-specific package

We report APW+${lo}$ (augmented plane wave plus local orbital) density functional theory (DFT) calculations of molecule systems using the domain specific SIRIUS multi-functional DFT package. Compared to other packages the additional APW and FLAPW task and data parallelism and the additional eigensystem solver provided by the SIRIUS package can be exploited for performance gains in in the ground state Kohn-Sham calculation. This is in contrast with the use of SIRIUS as a library backend to some other APW+${lo}$ or FLAPW (full-potential linearized AWP) code. We benchmark the code and demonstrate performance on several magnetic molecule and metal organic framework systems. We show that the SIRIUS package in itself is capable of handling systems as large as a few hundreds of atoms in the unit cell without losing the accuracy needed for magnetic systems.

Persistent Corner Spin Mode at the Quantum Critical Point of a Plaquette Heisenberg Model

Gapless edge states are the hallmark of a large class of topological states of matter. Recently, intensive research has been devoted to understanding the physical properties of the edge states at the quantum phase transitions of the bulk topological states. A higher-order symmetry-protected topological state is realized in a plaquette Heisenberg model on the square lattice. In its disordered phase, the lattice with an open boundary hosts either dangling corner states with spin-$1/2$ degeneracy characterizing the topological phase, or nondangling corner states without degeneracy, which depends on the bond configuration near the corners. In this work, we study the critical behavior of these corner states at the quantum critical point (QCP), and find that the spin-$1/2$ corner state induces a new universality class of the corner critical behavior, which is distinct from the ordinary transition of the nondangling corners. In particular, we find that the dangling spin-$1/2$ corner state persists at the QCP despite its coupling to the critical spin fluctuations in the bulk. This shows the robustness of the corner state of the higher-order topological state.

Tuning anomalous Floquet topological bands with ultracold atoms

The Floquet engineering opens the way to create new topological states without counterparts in static systems. Here, we report the experimental realization and characterization of new anomalous topological states with high-precision Floquet engineering for ultracold atoms trapped in a shaking optical Raman lattice. The Floquet band topology is manipulated by tuning the driving-induced band crossings referred to as band inversion surfaces (BISs), whose configurations fully characterize the topology of the underlying states. We uncover various exotic anomalous topological states by measuring the configurations of BISs which correspond to the bulk Floquet topology. In particular, we identify an unprecedented anomalous Floquet valley-Hall state that possesses anomalous helicallike edge modes protected by valleys and a chiral state with high Chern number.
