Conformal Boundary Conditions of Symmetry-Enriched Quantum Critical Spin Chains

Some quantum critical states cannot be smoothly deformed into each other without either crossing some multicritical points or explicitly breaking certain symmetries even if they belong to the same universality class. This brings up the notion of ``symmetry-enriched'' quantum criticality. While recent works in the literature focused on critical states with robust degenerate edge modes, we propose that the conformal boundary condition (b.c.) is a more generic characteristic of such quantum critical states. We show that in two families of quantum spin chains, which generalize the Ising and the three-state Potts models, the quantum critical point between a symmetry-protected topological phase and a symmetry-breaking order realizes a conformal b.c. distinct from the simple Ising and Potts chains. Furthermore, we argue that the conformal b.c. can be derived from the bulk effective field theory, which realizes a novel bulk-boundary correspondence in symmetry-enriched quantum critical states.

Unconventional Floquet topological phases from quantum engineering of band inversion surfaces

Floquet engineering provides a toolbox for the realization of novel quantum phases without static counterparts, while conventionally the realization may rely on the manipulation of complex temporal evolution. Here we propose a systematic and high-precision scheme to realize unconventional Floquet topological phases by engineering local band structures in particular momentum subspace called band inversion surfaces (BISs). This scheme is based on a new bulk-boundary correspondence that for a class of generic $d$-dimensional periodically driven systems, the local topological structure formed in each BIS uniquely determines the features of gapless boundary modes. By engineering the BIS configuration we demonstrate a highly efficient approach to realize, manipulate, and detect novel Floquet topological phases. In particular, we predict a two-dimensional (2D) anomalous Floquet valley-Hall phase which carries trivial global bulk topological invariants but features protected counter-propagating edge states in each quasienergy gap. The unconventional nature of this novel 2D phase is further illustrated by the examination of edge geometry dependence and its robustness to disorder scattering. Anomalous chiral topological phases with valley protection in higher dimension are also predicted and studied. Our systematic and highly feasible scheme opens a new route to realize and engineer unconventional Floquet topological phases for ultracold atoms and other quantum simulators.

Tuning of Quantum Paraelectricity of M-type Hexaferrite BaFe12O19 by External Parameters

M-type hexaferrite BaFe12O19 was recently reported to be a new type of quantum paraelectrics with triangular lattice by showing a low temperature dielectric plateau due to quantum fluctuation. It has also been proposed to have a possible quantum-dipole liquid ground state. To suppress its quantum fluctuations and reach a possible quantum critical point, we have tuned its quantum paraelectricity in three ways: (i) 57Fe isotope replacement; (ii) in-plane compressive strain; and (iii) hydrostatic pressure. It is found that 95% 57Fe replacement and the in-plane strain are more effective to drive its ground state closer to a critical region by inducing a peak feature in the temperature dependence of dielectric constant. In contrast, the application of hydrostatic pressure pushed the system away from the quantum critical point by gradually suppressing the plateau feature in dielectric constant. Our combined efforts reveal the potential of the M-type hexaferrites for studying the quantum critical behaviors.

Multiband effects in thermoelectric and electrical transport properties of kagome superconductors $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs)

We studied the effects of multiband electronic structure on the thermoelectric and electrical transport properties in the normal state of kagome superconductors $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs). In all three members, the multiband nature is manifested by sign changes in the temperature dependence of the Seebeck and Hall resistivity, together with sublinear response of the isothermal Nernst and Hall effects to external magnetic fields in the charge ordered state. Moreover, ambipolar transport effects appear ubiquitously in all three systems, giving rise to sizable Nernst signal. Finally, possible origins of the sign reversal in the temperature dependence of the Hall effect are discussed.

Quantum phase with coexisting localized, extended, and critical zones

Conventionally a mobility edge (ME) marks a critical energy that separates two different transport zones where all states are extended and localized, respectively. Here we propose a novel quasiperiodic spin-orbit coupled lattice model with experimental feasibility to realize a fundamentally new quantum phase with three coexisting energy-dependent zones, i.e., the extended, critical and localized zones, and uncover the underlying generic mechanism for the occurrence of the new quantum phase. Accordingly, this phase exhibits new types of MEs which separate the extended states from critical ones, and the localized states from critical ones, respectively. We introduce the diagnostic quantities to characterize and distinguish the different zones, and show that the predicted phase can be detected by measuring the fractal dimension or conductivities. The experimental realization is also proposed and studied. This work extends the concept of ME and enriches the quantum phases in disordered systems, which sheds light on searching for new localization and critical phenomena with novel transport and thermoelectric effects.

Realization of Qi-Wu-Zhang model in spin-orbit-coupled ultracold fermions

Based on the optical Raman lattice technique, we experimentally realize the Qi-Wu-Zhang model for quantum anomalous Hall phase in ultracold fermions with two-dimensional (2D) spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We develop a novel protocol of pump-probe quench measurement to probe, with minimal heating, the resonant spin flipping on particular quasi-momentum subspace called band-inversion surfaces. With this protocol we demonstrate the first Dirac-type 2D SO coupling in a fermionic system, and detect non-trivial band topology by observing the change of band-inversion surfaces as the two-photon detuning varies. The non-trivial band topology is also observed by slowly loading the atoms into optical Raman lattices and measuring the spin textures. Our results show solid evidence for the realization of the minimal SO-coupled quantum anomalous Hall model, which can provide a feasible platform to investigate novel topological physics including the correlation effects with SO-coupled ultracold fermions.

Observation of enhanced spin-spin correlations at triple point in 2D ferromagnetic Cr2X2Te6 (X=Si, Ge)

The domain dynamics and spin-spin correlation of 2D ferromagnets Cr2X2Te6 (X=Si, Ge) are investigated by a composite magnetoelectric method. The magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams for both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields disclose a triple point around TC and 1 kOe, where ferromagnetic, paramagnetic, and spin-polarized phases coexist. The magnetoelectric signal shows peak features at the phase boundaries and reaches the maximum at the triple point, suggesting significant enhancement of spin-spin correlations at this point. A comparison between two systems reveals that the spin-spin correlations in Cr2Si2Te6 are stronger than that in Cr2Ge2Te6.

cRPA calculation of on-site and nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction of $LaNiO_2$

We present first-principle calculation of the on-site and nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction strength of the Ni $d$ orbitals in bulk $LaNiO_{2}$, using the constrained Random Phase Approximation method. The nearest neighbor correlation within Ni-O plane turns out to be more significant when considering the frequency dependent $U(ω)$, which can be as strong as about 25\% of the on-site value at medium and high frequencies. The inter Ni-O plane nearest neighbor correlation is found to be the same strength as that within the Ni-O plane, indicating the material is non-locally correlated also between the Ni-O planes.

Surface criticality of antiferromagnetic Potts model

We study the three-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the simple-cubic lattice, paying attention to the surface critical behaviors. When the nearest neighboring interactions of the surface is tuned, we obtain a phase diagram similar to the XY model, owing to the emergent O(2) symmetry of the bulk critical point. For the ordinary transition, we get $y_{h1}=0.780(3)$, $η_\parallel=1.44(1)$, and $η_\perp=0.736(6)$; for the special transition, we get $y_s=0.59(1)$, $y_{h1}=1.693(2)$, $η_\parallel=-0.391(4)$, and $η_\perp=-0.179(5)$; in the extraordinary-log phase, the surface correlation function $C_\parallel(r)$ decays logarithmically, with decaying exponent $q=0.60(2)$, however, the correlation $C_\perp(r)$ still decays algebraically, with critical exponent $η_\perp=-0.442(5)$. If the ferromagnetic next nearest neighboring surface interactions are added, we find two transition points, the first one is a special point between the ordinary phase and the extraordinary-log phase, the second one is a transition between the extraordinary-log phase and the $Z_6$ symmetry-breaking phase, with critical exponent $y_{\rm s}=0.41(2)$. The scaling behaviors of the second transition is very interesting, the surface spin correlation function $C_\parallel(r)$ and the surface squared staggered magnetization at this point decays logarithmically, with exponent $q=0.37(1)$; however, the surface structure factor with the smallest wave vector and the correlation function $C_\perp(r)$ satisfy power-law decaying, with critical exponents $η_\parallel=-0.69(1)$ and $η_\perp=-0.37(1)$, respectively.

Exotic surface behaviors induced by geometrical settings of the two-dimensional dimerized quantum XXZ model

We study the surface behavior of the two-dimensional columnar dimerized quantum antiferromagnetic XXZ model with easy-plane anisotropy, with particular emphasis on the surface critical behaviors of the (2+1)-dimensional quantum critical points of the model that belong to the classical three-dimensional O(2) universality class, for both $S=1/2$ and $S=1$ spins using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find completely different surface behaviors on two different surfaces of geometrical settings: the dangling-ladder surface, which is exposed by cutting a row of weak bonds, and the dangling-chain surface, which is formed by cutting a row of strong bonds along the direction perpendicular to the strong bonds of a periodic system. Similar to the Heisenberg limit, we find an ordinary transition on the dangling-ladder surface for both $S=1$ and $S=1/2$ spin systems. However, the dangling-chain surface shows much richer surface behaviors than in the Heisenberg limit. For the $S=1/2$ easy-plane model, at the bulk critical point, we provide evidence supporting an extraordinary surface transition with a long-range order established by effective long-range interactions due to bulk critical fluctuations. The possibility that the state is an extraordinary-log state seems unlikely. For the $S=1$ system, we find surface behaviors similar to that of the three-dimensional classical XY model with sufficiently enhanced surface coupling, suggesting an extraordinary-log state at the bulk critical point.

Relaxation Oscillations of an Exciton-polariton Condensate Driven by Parametric Scattering

We report observation of coherent oscillations in the relaxation dynamics of an exciton-polariton condensate driven by parametric scattering processes. As a result of the interbranch scattering scheme and the nonlinear polariton-polariton interactions, such parametric scatterings exhibit high scattering efficiency, which leads to fast depletion of the polariton condensate and periodic shut-off of the bosonic stimulation processes, eventually causing relaxation oscillations. Employing polariton-reservoir interactions, the oscillation dynamics in the time domain can be projected onto the energy space. In theory, our simulations using the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation are in excellent agreement with experimental observations. Surprisingly, the oscillation patterns are clearly visible in our time-integrated images including many excitation pulses, implying the high stability of the relaxation oscillations driven by polariton parametric scatterings.

Frequency-Aware Contrastive Learning for Neural Machine Translation

Low-frequency word prediction remains a challenge in modern neural machine translation (NMT) systems. Recent adaptive training methods promote the output of infrequent words by emphasizing their weights in the overall training objectives. Despite the improved recall of low-frequency words, their prediction precision is unexpectedly hindered by the adaptive objectives. Inspired by the observation that low-frequency words form a more compact embedding space, we tackle this challenge from a representation learning perspective. Specifically, we propose a frequency-aware token-level contrastive learning method, in which the hidden state of each decoding step is pushed away from the counterparts of other target words, in a soft contrastive way based on the corresponding word frequencies. We conduct experiments on widely used NIST Chinese-English and WMT14 English-German translation tasks. Empirical results show that our proposed methods can not only significantly improve the translation quality but also enhance lexical diversity and optimize word representation space. Further investigation reveals that, comparing with related adaptive training strategies, the superiority of our method on low-frequency word prediction lies in the robustness of token-level recall across different frequencies without sacrificing precision.

Finite-Size Scaling Analysis of the Planck's Quantum-Driven Integer Quantum Hall Transition in Spin-$1/2$ Kicked Rotor Model

The quantum kicked rotor (QKR) model is a prototypical system in the research of quantum chaos. In a spin-$1/2$ QKR, tuning the effective Planck parameter realizes a series of transitions between dynamical localization phases, which closely resembles the integer quantum Hall (IQH) effect and the plateau transitions. In this work, we devise and apply the finite-size scaling analysis to the transitions in the spin-$1/2$ QKR model. We obtain an estimate of the critical exponent at the transition point, $ν=2.62(9)$, which is consistent with the IQH plateau transition universality class. We also give a precise estimate of the universal diffusion rate at the metallic critical state, $σ^{*}=0.3253(12)$.

Van der Waals Heterostructure Polaritons with moiré-Induced Nonlinearity

Controlling matter-light interactions with cavities is of fundamental importance in modern science and technology. It is exemplified in the strong-coupling regime, where matter-light hybrid modes form, with properties controllable via the photon component on the optical-wavelength scale. In contrast, matter excitations on the nanometer scale are harder to access. In two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, a tunable moiré lattice potential for electronic excitations may form, enabling correlated electron gases in lattice potentials. Excitons confined in moiré lattices have also been reported, but cooperative effects have been elusive and interactions with light have remained perturbative. Here, integrating MoSe$_{2}$-WS$_{2}$ heterobilayers in a microcavity, we establish cooperative coupling between moiré-lattice excitons and microcavity photons up to liquid-nitrogen temperature, thereby integrating into one platform versatile control over both matter and light. The density dependence of the moiré polaritons reveals strong nonlinearity due to exciton blockade, suppressed exciton energy shift, and suppressed excitation-induced dephasing, all of which are consistent with the quantum-confined nature of the moiré excitons. Such a moiré polariton system combines strong nonlinearity and microscopic-scale tuning of matter excitations with the power of cavity engineering and long range coherence of light, providing a new platform for collective phenomena from tunable arrays of quantum emitters.

Magneto-Seebeck effect and ambipolar Nernst effect in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ superconductor

We present a study of Seebeck and Nernst effect in combination with magnetoresistance and Hall measurements of the Kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Sizable magneto-Seebeck signal appears once the charge density wave (CDW) order sets in below $T_{CDW}$=94 K. The Nernst signal peaks at a lower temperature $T^*$=35 K, crossing which the Hall coefficient switches sign, which we attribute to the ambipolar transport of compensated bands due to the multi-band nature of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Sublinear Nernst signal as a function of magnetic field, together with large anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) also emerge inside the CDW phase, despite the absence of long-range magnetic order. These findings suggest that, the transport properties are dominated by small pockets with multi-band profile, and that the unusual band topology also plays an import role in the CDW state of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$.

Production Monitoring to Improve Test Suites

In this paper, we propose to use production executions to improve the quality of testing for certain methods of interest for developers. These methods can be methods that are not covered by the existing test suite, or methods that are poorly tested. We devise an approach called PANKTI which monitors applications as they execute in production, and then automatically generates differential unit tests, as well as derived oracles, from the collected data. PANKTI's monitoring and generation focuses on one single programming language, Java. We evaluate it on three real-world, open-source projects: a videoconferencing system, a PDF manipulation library, and an e-commerce application. We show that PANKTI is able to generate differential unit tests by monitoring target methods in production, and that the generated tests improve the quality of the test suite of the application under consideration.

Neural Differential Equations for Inverse Modeling in Model Combustors

Monitoring the dynamics processes in combustors is crucial for safe and efficient operations. However, in practice, only limited data can be obtained due to limitations in the measurable quantities, visualization window, and temporal resolution. This work proposes an approach based on neural differential equations to approximate the unknown quantities from available sparse measurements. The approach tackles the challenges of nonlinearity and the curse of dimensionality in inverse modeling by representing the dynamic signal using neural network models. In addition, we augment physical models for combustion with neural differential equations to enable learning from sparse measurements. We demonstrated the inverse modeling approach in a model combustor system by simulating the oscillation of an industrial combustor with a perfectly stirred reactor. Given the sparse measurements of the temperature inside the combustor, upstream fluctuations in compositions and/or flow rates can be inferred. Various types of fluctuations in the upstream, as well as the responses in the combustor, were synthesized to train and validate the algorithm. The results demonstrated that the approach can efficiently and accurately infer the dynamics of the unknown inlet boundary conditions, even without assuming the types of fluctuations. Those demonstrations shall open a lot of opportunities in utilizing neural differential equations for fault diagnostics and model-based dynamic control of industrial power systems.

Automatic Observability for Dockerized Java Applications

Docker is a virtualization technique heavily used in the industry to build cloud-based systems. In the context of Docker, a system is said to be observable if engineers can get accurate information about its running state in production. In this paper, we present a novel approach, called POBS, to automatically improve the observability of Dockerized Java applications. POBS is based on automated transformations of Docker configuration files. Our approach injects additional modules in the production application, in order to provide better observability. We evaluate POBS by applying it on open-source Java applications which are containerized with Docker. Our key result is that 148/170 (87%) of Docker Java containers can be automatically augmented with better observability.
