The HST-Hyperion Survey: Grism Observations of a $z\sim2.5$ Proto-Supercluster

We present first results and catalogs from the HST-Hyperion survey. This survey has collected 50 orbits of WFC3/F160W imaging and WFC3/G141 grism spectroscopy in the most overdense regions of the Hyperion proto-supercluster at $z\sim2.45$, which are analyzed in conjunction with the adjacent 56 orbits of WFC3/F140W imaging and WFC3/G141 grism spectroscopy from the 3D-HST survey. Sources were identified and spectra extracted using GRIZLI, which subsequently fit the combined grism data with object-matched photometric data from the COSMOS2020 catalog to obtain a redshift and best-fit spectral model. Each source was then visually inspected by multiple team members and quality flags were assigned. A total of 12814 objects with $m_{HST} \leq 25.0$ were inspected, of which 5629 (44%) have reliable redshifts from the grism data, which are sensitive to emission lines at a level of $\sim8.8 \times10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ ($1σ$). Comparison to high-quality ground-based spectroscopic redshifts yields a scatter of $σ_{\rm NMAD} = 0.0016$. The resulting catalogs contain 125 confirmed members of the Hyperion structure within $2.40<z<2.53$, with an additional 71 confirmed galaxies in projection within $2.35<z<2.65$. The redshift, stellar population, and line flux catalogs, as well as all grism spectra, are publicly available.

Galactic-scale emission-line outflow from the radio-loud quasar 3C 191

Quasar feedback is routinely invoked as an indispensable ingredient in galaxy formation models. Galactic outflows are a crucial agent of quasar feedback that frequently manifest themselves in absorption and emission lines. Measuring the size and energetics of outflows based on absorption lines remains a challenge, and integral-field spectroscopy (IFS) mapping in emission lines is complementary. We present a VLT/SINFONI IFS mapping of quasar 3C 191 at $z \sim 2$, in which the outflow has been analyzed in absorption line spectroscopy. Three components are found based on the morphology and kinetics of [OIII]-emitting gas: a unshifted component which consistent with the systemic redshift and the location of the nucleus, a blueshifted in the north, and a redshifted in the south. The latter two components have velocities $\sim$ 600 km s$^{-1}$ and projected extents of 5 and 11 kpc, respectively, suggesting a biconical outflow structure. The blueshifted component's velocity is consistent with that derived from absorption lines. Using the electron density measured by the absorption lines and the luminosity and velocity of [OIII] outflow, we derive the mass outflow rate to be $\dot{M} \sim $ 9.5-13.4 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and kinetic luminosity $\dot{E}_{\rm kin}$ ~ 2.5-3.7 $\times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, consistent with absorption line analyses with VLT/Xshooter spectrum. The kinetic luminosity is only 0.01% of the bolometric luminosity, rendering a relatively weak outflow compared to typical expectation for effective feedback.

The distance of quasar outflows from the central source: The first consistent values from emission and absorption determinations

Measuring the distance of quasar outflows from the central source ($R$) is essential for determining their importance for AGN feedback. There are two methods to measure $R$: 1) A direct determination using spatially resolved Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) of the outflow in emission. 2) An indirect method which uses the absorption troughs from ionic excited states. The column density ratio between the excited and resonance states yields the outflow number density. Combined with a knowledge of the outflow's ionization parameter, $R$ can be determined. Generally, the IFS method probes $R$ range of several kpc or more, while the absorption method usually yields $R$ values of less than 1 kpc. There is no inconsistency between the two methods as the determinations come from different objects. Here we report the results of applying both methods to the same quasar outflow, where we derive consistent determinations of $R$ $\approx$ 5 kpc. This is the first time where the indirect absorption $R$ determination is verified by a direct spatially resolved IFS observation. In addition, the velocities (and energetics) from the IFS and absorption data are also found to be consistent. Therefore, these are two manifestations of the same outflow. In this paper we concentrate on the absorption $R$ determination for the outflow seen in quasar 3C 191 using VLT/X-shooter observations. We also reanalyze an older absorption determination for the outflow based on Keck/HIRES data and find that revised measurement to be consistent with ours. Our companion paper details the IFS analysis of the same object.

Discovering Large-Scale Structure at $2<z<5$ in the C3VO Survey

The Charting Cluster Construction with VUDS and ORELSE (C3VO) survey is an ongoing imaging and spectroscopic campaign aiming to map out the growth of structure up to $z\sim5$ and was born from the combination of the Visible Multi-Object Spectrograph Ultra Deep Survey and the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large-Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey. As we previously accomplished with the ORELSE survey, we apply our technique known as Voronoi tessellation Monte Carlo (VMC) mapping to search for serendipitous galaxy overdensities at $2 14$ and $2 14.5$. In the C3VO fields, we were able to recover many of the previously known structures in the literature as well as find hundreds of new overdensity candidates, once again demonstrating the powerful capabilities of VMC mapping when applied to wide-field optical and infrared galaxy evolution surveys at ever higher redshifts.

GPU-accelerated Multi-relational Parallel Graph Retrieval for Web-scale Recommendations

Web recommendations provide personalized items from massive catalogs for users, which rely heavily on retrieval stages to trade off the effectiveness and efficiency of selecting a small relevant set from billion-scale candidates in online digital platforms. As one of the largest Chinese search engine and news feed providers, Baidu resorts to Deep Neural Network (DNN) and graph-based Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search (ANNS) algorithms for accurate relevance estimation and efficient search for relevant items. However, current retrieval at Baidu fails in comprehensive user-item relational understanding due to dissected interaction modeling, and performs inefficiently in large-scale graph-based ANNS because of suboptimal traversal navigation and the GPU computational bottleneck under high concurrency. To this end, we propose a GPU-accelerated Multi-relational Parallel Graph Retrieval (GMP-GR) framework to achieve effective yet efficient retrieval in web-scale recommendations. First, we propose a multi-relational user-item relevance metric learning method that unifies diverse user behaviors through multi-objective optimization and employs a self-covariant loss to enhance pathfinding performance. Second, we develop a hierarchical parallel graph-based ANNS to boost graph retrieval throughput, which conducts breadth-depth-balanced searches on a large-scale item graph and cost-effectively handles irregular neural computation via adaptive aggregation on GPUs. In addition, we integrate system optimization strategies in the deployment of GMP-GR in Baidu. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of GMP-GR in retrieval accuracy and efficiency. Deployed across more than twenty applications at Baidu, GMP-GR serves hundreds of millions of users with a throughput exceeding one hundred million requests per second.

NGDEEP: The Star Formation and Ionization Properties of Galaxies at $1.7 < z < 3.4$

We use JWST/NIRISS slitless spectroscopy from the Next Generation Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Public (NGDEEP) Survey to investigate the physical condition of star-forming galaxies at $1.7 < z < 3.4$. At these redshifts, the deep NGDEEP NIRISS slitless spectroscopy covers the [O II]$λλ$3726,3729, [O III]$λλ$4959,5007, H$β$ and H$α$ emission features for galaxies with stellar masses $\log(\mathrm{M_\ast/M_\odot}) \gtrsim 7$, nearly a factor of a hundred lower than previous studies. We focus on the [O III]/[O II] (O$_{32}$) ratio which is primarily sensitive to the ionization state and with a secondary dependence on the gas-phase metallicity of the interstellar medium. We find significant ($\gtrsim5σ$) correlations between the O$_{32}$ ratio and galaxy properties as O$_{32}$ increases with decreasing stellar mass, decreasing star formation rate (SFR), increasing specific SFR (sSFR$\equiv \mathrm{SFR}/M_*$), and increasing equivalent width (EW) of H$β$ and H$α$. These trends suggest a tight connection between the ionization parameter and these galaxy properties. Galaxies at $z\sim2-3$ exhibit a higher O$_{32}$ than local normal galaxies with the same stellar masses and SFRs, indicating that they have a higher ionization parameter and lower metallicity than local normal galaxies. In addition, we observe a mild evolutionary trend in the O$_{32}$ -- EW(H$β$) relation from $z\sim0$ to $z\gtrsim5$, where higher redshift galaxies show increased O$_{32}$ and EW, with possibly higher O$_{32}$ at fixed EW. We argue that both the enhanced recent star formation activity and the higher star formation surface density may contribute to the increase in O$_{32}$ and the ionization parameter.

The Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS)

We present the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) Survey, a 77.2 hour Director's Discretionary Early Release Science Program. CEERS demonstrates, tests, and validates efficient extragalactic surveys using coordinated, overlapping parallel observations with the JWST instrument suite, including NIRCam and MIRI imaging, NIRSpec low (R~100) and medium (R~1000) resolution spectroscopy, and NIRCam slitless grism (R~1500) spectroscopy. CEERS targets the Hubble Space Telescope-observed region of the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) field, supported by a rich set of multiwavelength data. CEERS facilitated immediate community science in both of the extragalactic core JWST science drivers ``First Light" and ``Galaxy Assembly," including: 1) The discovery and characterization of large samples of galaxies at z >~ 10 from ~90 arcmin^2 of NIRCam imaging, constraining their abundance and physical nature; 2) Deep spectra of >1000 galaxies, including dozens of galaxies at 6 3; and 4) Characterizing galaxy mid-IR emission with MIRI to study dust-obscured star-formation and supermassive black hole growth at z~1-3. As a legacy product for the community, the CEERS team has provided several data releases, accompanied by detailed notes on the data reduction procedures and notebooks to aid in reproducibility. In addition to an overview of the survey and quality of the data, we provide science highlights from the first two years with CEERS data.

Full-Duplex UWA communication with a two-element transducer

In this work we present a full-duplex (FD) underwater acoustic (UWA) communication system simultaneously transmitting and receiving acoustic signals in the same frequency bandwidth. To simplify the FD hardware, the system exploits a recently designed two-element transducer capable of simultaneously transmitting and receiving signals. The key challenge of implementing an FD system is to cancel the strong self-interference (SI) from the near-end transmitter. By using advanced adaptive filtering algorithms providing high accuracy channel estimates, a high level of SI cancellation can be achieved when the far-end signal is absent. However, the SI channel estimation performance is limited in FD scenarios since the far-end signal acts as an interference. In this paper, we propose an FD UWA communication system which alternates between the SI cancellation and far-end data demodulation. An adaptive Rake combiner with multipath interference cancellation is implemented to improve the demodulation performance in time-varying multipath channels. The performance of the FD UWA system is evaluated in lake experiments. The proposed adaptive Rake combiner with multipath interference cancellation significantly outperforms the conventional Rake combiner in all the experiments. With the new Rake combiner, the detection performance of the proposed FD UWA system is comparable with that of the half-duplex system.

Enhanced AGN Activity in Overdense Galactic Environments at $2 < z < 4$

We conduct a study on the relationship between galaxy environments and their active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity at high redshifts ($2.0 10^{12.8}M_\odot$) overdense ($σ_δ>5.0$) peak, normalized with respect to the size of the peak. These findings indicate that the prevalence of AGN activity is highly dependent on the environment in which a host galaxy resides, even at early times in the formation history of the Universe.

The Next Generation Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Public Near-Infrared Slitless Survey Epoch 1 (NGDEEP-NISS1): Extra-Galactic Star-formation and Active Galactic Nuclei at 0.5 < z < 3.6

The Next Generation Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Public (NGDEEP) survey program was designed specifically to include Near Infrared Slitless Spectroscopic observations (NGDEEP-NISS) to detect multiple emission lines in as many galaxies as possible and across a wide redshift range using the Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS). We present early results obtained from the the first set of observations (Epoch 1, 50$\%$ of the allocated orbits) of this program (NGDEEP-NISS1). Using a set of independently developed calibration files designed to deal with a complex combination of overlapping spectra, multiple position angles, and multiple cross filters and grisms, in conjunction with a robust and proven algorithm for quantifying contamination from overlapping dispersed spectra, NGDEEP-NISS1 has achieved a 3$σ$ sensitivity limit of 2 $\times$ 10$^{-18}$ erg/s/cm$^2$. We demonstrate the power of deep wide field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) to characterize the star-formation rates, and metallicity ([OIII]/H$β$), and dust content, of galaxies at $1<z<3.5$. The latter showing intriguing initial results on the applicability and assumptions made regarding the use of Case B recombination. Further, we identify the presence of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and infer the mass of their supermassive black holes (SMBHs) using broadened restframe MgII and H$β$ emission lines. The spectroscopic results are then compared with the physical properties of galaxies extrapolated from fitting spectral energy distribution (SED) models to photometry alone. The results clearly demonstrate the unique power and efficiency of WFSS at near-infrared wavelengths over other methods to determine the properties of galaxies across a broad range of redshifts.

NGDEEP Epoch 1: Spatially Resolved H$α$ Observations of Disk and Bulge Growth in Star-Forming Galaxies at $z \sim$ 0.6-2.2 from JWST NIRISS Slitless Spectroscopy

We study the H$α$ equivalent width, EW(H$α$), maps of 19 galaxies at $0.6 < z < 2.2$ in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) derived from NIRISS slitless spectroscopy as part of the Next Generation Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Public (NGDEEP) Survey. Our galaxies mostly lie on the star-formation main sequence with a stellar mass range of $\mathrm{10^9 - 10^{11} M_\odot}$, characterized as "typical" star-forming galaxies at these redshifts. Leveraging deep HST and JWST broad-band images, spanning 0.4-4.8 $μ$m, we perform spatially-resolved fitting of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for these galaxies and construct specific star formation rate (sSFR) and stellar-mass-weighted age maps with a spatial resolution of $\sim$1 kpc. The pixel-to-pixel EW(H$α$) increases with increasing sSFR and with decreasing age. The average trends are slightly different from the relations derived from integrated fluxes of galaxies from the literature, suggesting complex evolutionary trends within galaxies. We quantify the radial profiles of EW(H$α$), sSFR, and age. The majority (84%) of galaxies show positive EW(H$α$) gradients in line with the inside-out quenching scenario. A few galaxies (16%) show inverse (and flat) trends possibly due to merging or starbursts. We compare the distributions of EW(H$α$) and sSFR to the star formation history models (SFHs) as a function of galactocentric radius. We argue that the central regions of galaxies have experienced, at least one, rapid star-formation episodes, which leads to the formation of the bulge, while their outer regions (e.g., disks) grow via more smoothly varying SFHs. These results demonstrate the ability to study resolved star formation in distant galaxies with JWST NIRISS.

Characterizing the Average Interstellar Medium Conditions of Galaxies at $z\sim$ 5.6-9 with UV and Optical Nebular Lines

Ultraviolet (UV; rest-frame $\sim1200-2000$ A) spectra provide a wealth of diagnostics to characterize fundamental galaxy properties, such as their chemical enrichment, the nature of their stellar populations, and their amount of Lyman-continuum (LyC) radiation. In this work, we leverage publicly released JWST data to construct the rest-frame UV-to-optical composite spectrum of a sample of 63 galaxies at $5.6<z<9$, spanning the wavelength range from 1500 to 5200 A. Based on the composite spectrum, we derive an average dust attenuation $E(B-V)_\mathrm{gas}=0.16^{+0.10}_{-0.11}$ from \hb/\hg, electron density $n_e = 570^{+510}_{-290}$ cm$^{-3}$ from the [O II] doublet ratio, electron temperature $T_e = 17000^{+1500}_{-1500}$ K from the [O III] $\lambda4363$/ [O III] $\lambda5007$ ratio, and an ionization parameter $\log(U)=-2.18^{+0.03}_{-0.03}$ from the [O III]/[O II] ratio. Using a direct $T_e$ method, we calculate an oxygen abundance $12+\log\mathrm{(O/H)}=7.67\pm0.08$ and the carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) abundance ratio $\log\mathrm{(C/O)}=-0.87^{+0.13}_{-0.10}$. This C/O ratio is smaller than compared to $z=0$ and $z=2$ - 4 star-forming galaxies, albeit with moderate significance. This indicates the reionization-era galaxies might be undergoing a rapid build-up of stellar mass with high specific star-formation rates. A UV diagnostic based on the ratios of C III] $λ\lambda1907,1909$/He II $\lambda1640$ versus O III] $\lambda1666$/He II $\lambda1640$ suggests that the star formation is the dominant source of ionization, similar to the local extreme dwarf galaxies and $z\sim2$ - 4 He II-detected galaxies. The [O III]/[O II] and C IV/C III] ratios of the composite spectrum are marginally larger than the criteria used to select galaxies as LyC leakers, suggesting that some of the galaxies in our sample are strong contributors to the reionizing radiation.

Interference Cancellation for UWA Random Access Data Packet Transmission

In underwater acoustic (UWA) random access communication networks with multiple users and data packet transmissions, the packet collisions are the main cause of the network performance degradation. The aim of this paper is to investigate interference cancellation (IC) techniques capable of resolving such collisions in a low-complexity modem with single-carrier modulation and single transducer. More specifically, in this modem, the IC is used at multiple stages of the receiver. Firstly, the IC is performed for cancelling the multipath interference to improve the equalization performance in comparison with the linear equalization and Rake combining. Secondly, the IC removes the interference from collided data packets within extracted signal segments after identifying the collisions. Finally, the IC is applied to the received baseband signal to improve the data packet detection. The modem performance is investigated in a lake experiment with intensive multipath channels. The experimental results demonstrate high detection performance of the proposed modem design and show that the proposed IC techniques can significantly improve the throughput of random access UWA networks.

Protoclusters as Drivers of Stellar Mass Growth in the Early Universe, a Case Study: Taralay -- a Massive Protocluster at z ~ 4.57

Simulations predict that the galaxy populations inhabiting protoclusters may contribute considerably to the total amount of stellar mass growth of galaxies in the early universe. In this study, we test these predictions observationally, focusing on the Taralay protocluster (formerly PCl J1001+0220) at $z \sim 4.57$ in the COSMOS field. Leveraging data from the Charting Cluster Construction with VUDS and ORELSE (C3VO) survey, we spectroscopically confirmed 44 galaxies within the adopted redshift range of the protocluster ($4.48 < z < 4.64$) and incorporate an additional 18 such galaxies from ancillary spectroscopic surveys. Using a density mapping technique, we estimate the total mass of Taralay to be $\sim 1.7 \times 10^{15}$ M$_\odot$, sufficient to form a massive cluster by the present day. By comparing the star formation rate density (SFRD) within the protocluster (SFRD$_\text{pc}$) to that of the coeval field (SFRD$_\text{field}$), we find that SFRD$_\text{pc}$ surpasses the SFRD$_\text{field}$ by $Δ$log(SFRD/$M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$) = $1.08 \pm 0.32$ (or $\sim$ 12$\times$). The observed contribution fraction of protoclusters to the cosmic SFRD adopting Taralay as a proxy for typical protoclusters is $33.5\%^{+8.0\%}_{-4.3\%}$, a value $\sim$2$σ$ in excess of the predictions from simulations. Taralay contains three peaks that are $5σ$ above the average density at these redshifts. Their SFRD is $\sim$0.5 dex higher than the value derived for the overall protocluster. We show that 68% of all star formation in the protocluster takes place within these peaks, and that the innermost regions of the peaks encase $\sim 50\%$ of the total star formation in the protocluster. This study strongly suggests that protoclusters drive stellar mass growth in the early universe and that this growth may proceed in an inside-out manner.

Target detection using underwater acoustic communication links

Underwater monitoring and surveillance systems are essential for underwater target detection, localization and classification. The aim of this work is to investigate the possibility of target detection by using data transmission between communication nodes in an underwater acoustic (UWA) network, i.e, re-using acoustic communication signals for target detection. A new target detection method based on estimation of the time-varying channel impulse response between the communication transmitter(s) and receiver(s) is proposed and investigated. This is based on a lake experiment and numerical experiments using a simulator developed for modeling the time-varying UWA channel in the presence of a moving target. The proposed detection method provides a clear indication of a target crossing the communication link. A good similarity between results obtained in the numerical and lake experiments is observed.

Identification and Characterization of Six Spectroscopically Confirmed Massive Protostructures at $2.5<z<4.5$

We present six spectroscopically confirmed massive protostructures, spanning a redshift range of $2.5 9000$\thinspace cMpc$^3$) of more than $2.5σ_δ$ above the field density levels at these redshifts, have a total mass $M_{tot}\ge10^{14.8}M_\odot$ and one or more highly overdense (overdensity$\thinspace>5σ_δ$) peaks. One of the most complex protostructures discovered is a massive ($M_{tot}=10^{15.1}M_\odot$) system at $z\sim3.47$ that contains six peaks and 55 spectroscopic members. We also discover protostructures at $z\sim3.30$ and $z\sim3.70$ that appear to at least partially overlap on sky with the protostructure at $z\sim3.47$, suggesting a possible connection. We additionally report on the discovery of three massive protostructures at $z=2.67$, 2.80, and 4.14 and discuss their properties. Finally, we discuss the relationship between star formation rate and environment in the richest of these protostructures, finding an enhancement of star formation activity in the densest regions. The diversity of the protostructures reported here provide an opportunity to study the complex effects of dense environments on galaxy evolution over a large redshift range in the early universe.
