C3PO: A Ly{\alpha} Emitting Galaxy at $z \sim 9$

We present deep, $>10$ hr, JWST NIRSpec G140M and G395M observations of a previously known galaxy C3PO-8447 at $z=8.99781$. Our new NIRSpec data from the Carbon-3 plus Oxygen (C3PO) survey detect Ly$\alpha$ emission with an escape fraction of $1.5\pm0.3\%$ and a velocity offset of $210\pm80$ km s$^{-1}$, making C3PO-8447 the third Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxy confirmed at $z\gtrsim 9$. The galaxy has a low stellar mass of $2.2\pm0.1\times 10^7\ M_\odot$, a young stellar age of $1.6\pm0.2$ Myr, and a low oxygen abundance of $12+\log(\mathrm{O/H}) = 7.50\pm0.08$. UV diagnostic diagrams incorporating the C IV, O III], and C III] emission lines indicate that the ionization of C3PO-8447 is dominated by the recent starburst. The low Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction of C3PO-8447 implies that C3PO-8447 resides in a small ionized bubble with radius $R \sim 0.07$ to 0.20 pMpc, which can be produced by C3PO-8447 alone. We find no evidence for either a large-scale galaxy overdensity around C3PO-8447 or a significant contribution from nearby galaxies to its ionizing photon budget. Taken together, these results suggest that C3PO-8447 likely represents an ionized bubble powered by a single low-mass, vigorously star-forming galaxy during the early stages of cosmic reionization.

A systematic study of AGN feedback in a disk galaxy using MACER. III. High Gas Fractions in AGN Hosts

We use high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations in the MACER framework to explain why low-redshift PG quasar hosts can retain substantial cold-gas reservoirs, with gas fractions and gas-to-stellar mass ratios showing little dependence on instantaneous AGN luminosity. This paper is the third in a series systematically studying AGN feedback in a disk galaxy subject to cosmological gas inflow. The simulations include multiphase gas, star formation, stellar feedback, and self-consistent radiative and mechanical AGN feedback. We reproduce the observed weak connection between host-galaxy gas content and AGN luminosity over L_AGN/L_Edd ~ 10^{-5}-10, while the galaxy nevertheless undergoes pronounced gas depletion and star-formation quenching. During the quenching phase, the cold-gas mass declines by nearly three orders of magnitude, and the evolution of the gas distribution shows that AGN feedback progressively removes both cold and hot gas from the galaxy. The star formation rate is more closely linked to the cold-gas mass than to AGN luminosity. This behavior arises from a timescale mismatch: AGN luminosity varies on ~ 10^5-10^6 yr timescales, whereas repeated AGN-driven outflows cumulatively deplete the galaxy-scale gas reservoir over ~ 1 Gyr. Our simulations therefore provide a physical explanation for the gas-rich PG quasar hosts and show that their observed gas properties are fully consistent with effective, long-term ejective AGN feedback.

Tracking performance of RLS algorithms in WSSUS channels

Adaptive algorithms are widely used for estimation of linear time-varying systems, such as communication channels. Their tracking performance depends on the level of noise, characteristics of time variations, and the algorithm parameters. Optimizing these parameters and predicting the algorithm performance is an important task. In this paper, we present an approach for analysing the tracking performance of recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive algorithms in channels with time variations described as wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) random processes characterised by a power spectral density (PSD). We focus on exponential RLS and sliding-window RLS (SRLS) algorithms, for which general formulas for the mean square deviation (MSD) as a measure of the tracking performance are obtained in terms of spectral moments of the PSD. As examples, they are specified for random processes with uniform, Jakes' and autoregressive PSDs. These results are further generalized to RLS algorithms with delays, e.g. processing delays or delays introduced in non-causal adaptive RLS algorithms, and to the SRLS-L algorithm with approximation of channel time variations using Legendre polynomials. Numerical examples show good match between the analytical MSD and simulation results.

Role-Aware Neural Convex Divergence Heads for Asymmetric Representation Learning

Many representation learning problems involve directed relations, such as lexical entailment, sentence entailment, ontology hierarchy, and citation links. Standard Euclidean, cosine, and Mahalanobis heads are symmetric, while generic neural scorers can model directionality but provide limited geometric structure. This paper proposes a role-aware neural convex divergence head for asymmetric representation learning. The head applies source- and target-role projections before evaluating an input-convex neural Bregman divergence, yielding a nonnegative structured score in the role-projected space. We characterize its projected-space identity, source-role convexity, directional-gap decomposition, and Hessian-based local curvature. Experiments on lexical, sentence, ontology, and directed graph benchmarks compare symmetric distances, unstructured asymmetric scorers, order/hyperbolic baselines, plain ICNN-Bregman heads, and the proposed role-aware variant. Across ten random seeds on the main semantic and ontology benchmarks, role-aware projections consistently improve directional accuracy over plain ICNN-Bregman heads while preserving zero observed negative divergence rate. The results also identify a boundary case: on large fixed-feature citation prediction, specialized symmetric or hyperbolic baselines remain stronger in ranking accuracy. Overall, the proposed head is best understood as a structured and interpretable plug-in distance module for tasks where directional relations matter.

Massive Galaxies Form Early and Gray: Stellar Assembly and Dust Attenuation at $\mathbf{z>3.5}$ from CAPERS

The stellar mass assembly of massive galaxies in the first few billion years of cosmic history remains a central challenge in galaxy formation. Galaxies with $M_\star \gtrsim 10^{10}M_\odot$ observed at $z \gtrsim 4$ must grow rapidly under conditions of intense gas accretion, feedback, and dust production. Observationally, their star-formation histories (SFHs) have been poorly constrained due to degeneracies inherent to broadband photometry. The advent of JWST enables direct spectroscopic access to detailed continuum shapes and rest-frame optical diagnostics at high redshift, providing a critical opportunity to reconstruct formation timescales of massive early galaxies. Here, we investigate massive galaxies using joint spectro-photometric SED fitting of JWST/NIRSpec prism spectroscopy from the CANDELS-Area Prism Epoch of Reionization Survey (CAPERS). Our sample comprises 148 galaxies selected photometrically with log $(M_\star/M_\odot) > 9.5$ at $z > 3.5$. We find that the most massive galaxies (log $(M_\star/M_\odot) > 10.5$) preferentially exhibit shallow, gray dust attenuation curves, consistent with higher dust optical depths and large grain sizes. We also find significant diversity in the time at which galaxies form 25% of their stellar mass. While formation timescales converge toward later cosmic times, galaxies with lower sSFR ($\lesssim -9$) at the observation epoch formed significantly earlier than systems with higher sSFRs. Across the full mass range, inferred assembly times are systematically earlier than model predictions, suggesting more rapid early growth than currently captured theoretically. These results underscore the importance of spectroscopic constraints and flexible SFH and dust models for reconstructing high-redshift massive galaxy formation histories.

Using Ly$\alpha$ Transmitted Spectrum to Probe IGM Transmission and Identify Ionized Structures in Cosmic Reionization

We present a study of intergalactic medium (IGM) transmission at $4.5 < z < 6.5$ using high-signal-to-noise JWST/NIRSpec prism spectroscopy of 143 galaxies at $5<z<7$ from the CAPERS and JADES surveys. By comparing the observed flux blueward of Ly$\alpha$ emission line to the prediction of spectral energy distribution modeling, we directly measure the IGM transmission along the individual galaxy sightlines. The average transmission measured from these galaxy sightlines is consistent with previous measurements based on luminous quasars. Current NIRSpec spectroscopy is sufficiently deep to probe IGM transmission on single sightlines. We find evidence for a highly ionized structure, \bubble, at $z\sim 5.75-6$ in the GOODS-S field based on the analysis of a high-S/N spectrum of one galaxy, GS-18846, at $z=6.335$. The IGM transmission of GS-z6IS is $0.17\pm0.02$, an order of magnitude higher than the average of previous measurements at this redshift. This structure has a line-of-sight scale of $\sim110$ cMpc and spatially extends over at least $21\times17$ cMpc$^2$. GS-z6IS is associated with a known large-scale galaxy overdensity at the same redshift, whose member galaxies show enhanced Ly$\alpha$ visibility and a broader Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width distribution compared to field galaxies at similar redshift. This result supports the interpretation that Ly$\alpha$ overdensity can trace bubbles of increased IGM transmission, although environmental effects on galaxy properties may also contribute. Our study demonstrates that high-S/N galaxy spectra offer a powerful new approach to tracing ionized structures during the epoch of reionization.

Task-guided Spatiotemporal Network with Diffusion Augmentation for EEG-based Dementia Diagnosis and MMSE Prediction

Patients with dementia typically exhibit cognitive impairment, which is routinely assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Concurrently, their underlying neurophysiological abnormalities are reflected in Electroencephalography (EEG), providing a basis for joint modeling. However, traditional multi-task approaches suffer from feature entanglement, which leads to inter-task interference when handling heterogeneous objectives. To address this challenge, we propose a task-guided spatiotemporal network (TGSN) with diffusion augmentation for EEG-based dementia diagnosis and MMSE prediction. Specifically, TGSN integrates a multi-band feature fusion module to capture complementary spectral information from EEG. Meanwhile, a pre-trained data augmentation module utilizing a diffusion process is introduced toincrease sample diversity. To model the complex spatiotemporal patterns of EEG, we propose a gated spatiotemporal attention module that captures long-range spatial dependencies and temporal dynamics. Moreover, we design a task-guided query module to achieve task-specific feature extraction, thereby mitigating task interference. The effectiveness of TGSN is evaluated on the XY02 dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed network outperforms several state-of-the-art methods, achieving classification accuracies of 97.78\% for Alzheimer's Disease (AD)/Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and 83.93\% for AD/FTD/Vascular Cognitive Impairment (VCI), which exceed the best baselines by 16.39\% and 8.28\%, respectively. In parallel, it reduces the RMSE for MMSE prediction to 1.93 and 2.38, achieving significant error reductions of 1.44 and 1.43 compared to the best baselines. Additionally, validation on the DS004504 dataset demonstrates strong cross-dataset generalization...

NGDEEP: A New Non-Parametric Measure of Local Star-Formation and Attenuation at Cosmic Noon

We introduce a new non-parametric technique to quantify the spatially-resolved relationship between the local star-formation rate (SFR) and dust attenuation. We then apply it to 14 star-forming galaxies at $1.0<z<2.5$ using JWST/NIRISS slitless spectroscopy from the NGDEEP survey. First, we construct spatially resolved ($\sim$1~kpc per pixel) Balmer decrement ($H\alpha/H\beta$) maps of these galaxies and derive their corresponding dust attenuation and intrinsic SFR maps. We then rank-order the map pixels by attenuation and construct a cumulative distribution curve of the total SFR as a function of increasing attenuation. We define $\mathrm{A}^{\mathrm{SFR}}_{10\%}$, $\mathrm{A}^{\mathrm{SFR}}_{50\%}$, and $\mathrm{A}^{\mathrm{SFR}}_{90\%}$ as the dust attenuation levels behind which 10\%, 50\%, and 90\% of the total integrated SFR is screened, respectively. These metrics quantify the probability that a given star-forming region lies behind a given level of attenuation. Across the full sample, 50\% of the local star formation occurs behind an attenuation of 3.41 mag or higher ($\mathrm{A}^{\mathrm{SFR}}_{50\%}$). This indicates that the bulk of star formation in these galaxies is significantly attenuated by dust. The value of $\mathrm{A}^{\mathrm{SFR}}_{10\%}$ equals 1.45 for the average profile, indicating that even the least attenuated star-forming regions are still highly attenuated. The globally measured attenuation more closely matches $\mathrm{A}^{\mathrm{SFR}}_{10\%}$ than $\mathrm{A}^{\mathrm{SFR}}_{50\%}$. This suggests that the global value is weighted toward the least dust-obscured star-forming regions and significantly underestimates the typical attenuation a star-forming region encounters. Our results demonstrate a new approach for understanding the extremely dusty local conditions of the star-forming interstellar medium in SF galaxies at cosmic noon.

A first look at a complete view of spatially resolved star formation at 1<z<1.8 with JWST NGDEEP+FRESCO slitless spectroscopy

[abridged] The previously inaccessible star formation tracer Pa$\alpha$ can now be spatially resolved by JWST NIRCam slitless spectroscopy in distant galaxies up to cosmic noon. In the first study of its kind, we combine JWST NGDEEP NIRISS and FRESCO NIRCam slitless spectroscopy to provide the first direct comparison of spatially resolved dust-obscured (traced by Pa$\alpha$) versus unobscured (traced by H$\alpha$) star formation across the main sequence. We stack Pa$\alpha$ and H$\alpha$ emission-line maps, along with stellar continuum images at both wavelengths of 31 galaxies at 1<z<1.8 in three bins of stellar mass. Surface brightness profiles are measured and equivalent width (EW) profiles computed. Increasing Pa$\alpha$ and H$\alpha$ EW profiles with galactocentric radius across all stellar masses probed provide direct evidence for the inside-out growth of galaxies both via dust-obscured and unobscured star formation for the first time. For galaxies on the main sequence, a weakly positive ($0.1\pm0.1$) Pa$\alpha$/H$\alpha$ line profile as a function of radius is found at $8.8\leqslant\mathrm{log}(M_{*}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot})<9.9$ with a negative ($-0.4\pm0.1$) Pa$\alpha$/H$\alpha$ line profile found at $9.9\leqslant\mathrm{log}(M_{*}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot})<11.0$. Low mass galaxies ($7.7\leqslant\mathrm{log}(M_{*}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot})<8.8$) with high sSFRs are found to have a negative ($-0.5\pm0.1$) Pa$\alpha$/H$\alpha$ line profile gradient. Our results demonstrate that while inside-out growth via star formation is ubiquitous across the main sequence just after cosmic noon, centrally concentrated dust attenuation is not. Along with other recent work in the literature, our findings motivate future studies of resolved SFR profiles in large samples of individual cosmic noon galaxies across the main sequence, to understand the intrinsic scatter in spatially resolved star formation.

Probing the influence of the protocluster environment on galaxy morphology at z = 2.23

As galaxies evolve in dense cluster and protocluster environments, they interact and quench their star formation, which gradually transforms the galaxy population from star-forming galaxies to quiescent galaxies. This transformation is identifiable by observing galaxy colors and can be seen in the morphological transformation of late-type galaxies into early-type galaxies, which creates the morphology-density relation seen when comparing populations in clusters to co-eval field galaxies. However, high-z (z > 2) galaxy morphology studies are hindered by the high angular resolution necessary to characterize morphology. We present a study of HST WFC3 F160W observations of protoclusters from the MAMMOTH survey (BOSS1244 and BOSS1542) at z ~ 2.23 with populations of previously identified HAEs. By measuring the Sersic index of 151 HAEs, we look for the early morphological transformation of star-forming galaxies in these well-studied, large, non-virialized protoclusters, which we believe are precursors of present-day clusters. We find the morphology of the populations of star-forming protocluster galaxies does not differ from the co-eval field. However, we identify a population of clumpy, potentially merging galaxies, which could lead to an increase in the population of early-type galaxies in these structures. Additionally, in BOSS1244, which has two previously identified massive quiescent galaxies including a BCG, we find an abundance of early-type galaxies near both the BCG and two co-eval high-z quasars. Although we find a strong similarity between the morphology of field and protocluster galaxies, the population of early-type star-forming galaxies surrounding the spectroscopically confirmed quiescent BCG in BOSS1244, something not seen in BOSS1542, may point to differences in the evolutionary state of these co-eval protoclusters and be a sign of an early forming cluster core in BOSS1244.

Towards Autonomous Tape Handling for Robotic Wound Redressing

Chronic wounds, such as diabetic, pressure, and venous ulcers, affect over 6.5 million patients in the United States alone and generate an annual cost exceeding \$25 billion. Despite this burden, chronic wound care remains a routine yet manual process performed exclusively by trained clinicians due to its critical safety demands. We envision a future in which robotics and automation support wound care to lower costs and enhance patient outcomes. This paper introduces an autonomous framework for one of the most fundamental yet challenging subtasks in wound redressing: adhesive tape manipulation. Specifically, we address two critical capabilities: tape initial detachment (TID) and secure tape placement. To handle the complex adhesive dynamics of detachment, we propose a force-feedback imitation learning approach trained from human teleoperation demonstrations. For tape placement, we develop a numerical trajectory optimization method based to ensure smooth adhesion and wrinkle-free application across diverse anatomical surfaces. We validate these methods through extensive experiments, demonstrating reliable performance in both quantitative evaluations and integrated wound redressing pipelines. Our results establish tape manipulation as an essential step toward practical robotic wound care automation.

The HST-Hyperion Survey: Environmental Imprints on the Stellar-Mass Function at z~2.5

Not all galaxies at Cosmic Noon evolve in the same way. It remains unclear how the local environment -- especially the extreme overdensities of protoclusters -- affects stellar mass assembly at high redshift. The stellar mass function (SMF) encodes these processes; comparing SMFs across environments reveals differences in evolutionary history. We present the SMF of the Hyperion proto-supercluster at $z\sim2.5$, one of the largest and most massive protostructures known. This dataset provides the most statistically robust SMF of a single protostructure at $z>2$. By comparing the SMF of overdense peaks within Hyperion to the coeval field, we ask: how early, and how strongly, does a dense environment favor massive galaxies? Using COSMOS2020 photometry with ground-based and new HST grism spectroscopy, we construct a 3D overdensity map that assigns galaxies to peaks, outskirts, or the field. We perform 100 Monte Carlo realizations to propagate redshift and mass uncertainties, and derive SMFs normalized to the field. The peaks show a clear excess of massive galaxies: number densities at $\log(M_*/M_\odot)\sim 11$ are ~10x higher than the field, while those at $\log(M_*/M_\odot)\sim 9.5$ are enhanced by only ~3.5x. By contrast, the outskirts and Hyperion as a whole mirror the field. Environmental effects on stellar mass growth are thus evident by $z\sim 2.5$. The densest regions already host galaxies with accelerated growth, while the global SMF masks this signal. Protostructures therefore begin shaping the high-mass end of the SMF well before cluster quenching, and may drive the elevated star formation at Cosmic Noon.

MEGA: Spectrophotometric SED Fitting of Little Red Dots Detected in JWST MIRI

We analyze eight spectroscopically confirmed Little Red Dots (LRDs) at redshifts $z = 5.1-8.7$ with JWST/NIRCam, NIRSpec, and MIRI data. The LRDs have red NIRCam colors, F150W-F444W $>$ 1, but flat NIRCam-MIRI colors, $-0.5 < \mathrm{F444W - F770W} < 0.5$, suggesting weak warm/hot dust components. The LRDs have $-1.0 < {F1000W - F1500W} < 1.1$, suggestive of non-uniform rest near-IR properties within the sample. We model the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the LRDs using the CIGALE and Prospector codes to assess how the differing templates impact the interpretation for LRDs for cases of: (1) models with star-forming stellar populations only; (2) active galactic nuclei (AGN) dominated models; and (3) composite AGN and star-forming models. Using the Bayesian information criterion, we find that six of the eight LRDs favor AGN models compared to star-forming models, though no model reproduces all of the observed properties. Two LRDs with pronounced Balmer-breaks and broad H$\alpha$ have SEDs that are reproduced with hot, dense-gas ($\log T/\mathrm{K}=5-5.7$, $\log n/\mathrm{cm^{-3}} = 9-11$) models with low dust attenuation ($A(V)\simeq 0.5$ mag). However, these models require an additional thermal component (800-1400 K) to account for the MIRI data, and fail to reproduce the rest-UV and narrow [OIII] emission. The total bolometric emission from the dense-gas models, and possibly CIGALE AGN models, appear consistent with literature constraints in the far-IR and radio, and require $\log L_{bol}/L_\odot<12$. These results suggest that our LRDs cannot be modeled entirely with standard templates, but instead require a novel treatment of gas conditions, AGN and star-formation.

Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization Are All Bark and No Bite -- Plenty of Ionizing Photons, Low Escape Fractions

Early results from JWST suggest that epoch-of-reionization (EoR) galaxies produce copious ionizing photons, which, if they escape efficiently, could cause reionization to occur too early. We study this problem using \jwst\ imaging and prism spectroscopy for 412 galaxies at 4.5 < z < 9.0. We fit these data simultaneously with stellar-population and nebular-emission models that include a parameter for the fraction of ionizing photons that escape the galaxy, $f_\mathrm{esc}$. We find that the ionization production efficiency, $\xi_\mathrm{ion}$ = Q(H) / L(UV), increases with redshift and decreasing UV luminosity, but shows significant scatter, $\sigma( \log \xi_\mathrm{ion})$ = 0.3 dex. The inferred escape fractions averaged over the population are low, ranging from $\langle f_\mathrm{esc} \rangle$ = $2.6\pm 1.4$\% at 6 < z < 9 to $6.5\pm 2.2$\% at 4.5 < z < 6 with weak or no indication of evolution with redshift. This implies that in our models most of the ionizing photons need to be absorbed to account for the nebular emission. We compute the impact of our results on reionization, including the distributions for $\xi_\mathrm{ion}$ and $f_\mathrm{esc}$, and the evolution and uncertainty of the UV luminosity function. Considering galaxies brighter than M(UV) < -16 mag, we would produce an IGM hydrogen-ionized fraction of $x_e = 0.5$ at 5.3 < z < 5.8, possibly too late compared to constraints from from QSO sightlines. Including fainter galaxies, M(UV) < -14 mag, we obtain $x_e = 0.5$ at 6.0 < z < 8.1, fully consistent with QSO and CMB data. This implies that EoR galaxies produce plenty of ionizing photons, but these do not efficiently escape. This may be a result of high gas column densities combined with burstier star-formation histories, which limit the time massive stars are able to clear channels through the gas for ionizing photons to escape.

Theoretical Study on MR-TADF Materials Based on CzBN

Multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials have garnered significant research interest owing to their remarkably narrow emission spectra with full width at half maximum (FWHM) below $40~\text{nm}$, demonstrating substantial advantages over conventional donor-acceptor (D--A) type TADF materials in spectral purity. However, conventional N--B--N resonant framework materials are fundamentally constrained by their intrinsically low reverse intersystem crossing rates ($k_{\text{RISC}} < 10^{3}~\text{s}^{-1}$), presenting a persistent challenge for achieving high-efficiency TADF. This study proposes a triple collaborative design strategy based on CzBN to break through this limitation: (1) Enhance the separation of HOMO and LUMO by $\pi$-conjugation expansion and reduce $\Delta E_{\text{ST}}$; (2) Introduce O/S heteroatoms to control the excited state charge transfer (CT) characteristics and further reduce $\Delta E_{\text{ST}}$; (3) Enhance the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect through the synergy of extended $\pi$-system and heteroatoms. Based on this, five new MR-TADF molecules were designed and studied. Among them, the $k_{\text{RISC}}$ of CzBN\_S reached $3.48 \times 10^{6}~\text{s}^{-1}$, two orders of magnitude higher than CzBN, while maintaining $\Delta E_{\text{ST}} < 0.1~\text{eV}$ and FWHM at $40~\text{nm}$.

The HST-Hyperion Survey: Grism Observations of a $z\sim2.5$ Proto-Supercluster

We present first results and catalogs from the HST-Hyperion survey. This survey has collected 50 orbits of WFC3/F160W imaging and WFC3/G141 grism spectroscopy in the most overdense regions of the Hyperion proto-supercluster at $z\sim2.45$, which are analyzed in conjunction with the adjacent 56 orbits of WFC3/F140W imaging and WFC3/G141 grism spectroscopy from the 3D-HST survey. Sources were identified and spectra extracted using GRIZLI, which subsequently fit the combined grism data with object-matched photometric data from the COSMOS2020 catalog to obtain a redshift and best-fit spectral model. Each source was then visually inspected by multiple team members and quality flags were assigned. A total of 12814 objects with $m_{HST} \leq 25.0$ were inspected, of which 5629 (44%) have reliable redshifts from the grism data, which are sensitive to emission lines at a level of $\sim8.8 \times10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ ($1\sigma$). Comparison to high-quality ground-based spectroscopic redshifts yields a scatter of $\sigma_{\rm NMAD} = 0.0016$. The resulting catalogs contain 125 confirmed members of the Hyperion structure within $2.40<z<2.53$, with an additional 71 confirmed galaxies in projection within $2.35<z<2.65$. The redshift, stellar population, and line flux catalogs, as well as all grism spectra, are publicly available.

Extended Enriched Gas in a Multi-Galaxy Merger at Redshift 6.7

Recent JWST observations have uncovered high-redshift galaxies characterized by multiple star-forming clumps, many of which appear to be undergoing mergers. Such mergers, especially those of two galaxies with equivalent masses, play a critical role in driving galaxy evolution and regulating the chemical composition of their environments. Here, we report a major merger of at least five galaxies, dubbed JWST's Quintet (JQ), at redshift 6.7, discovered in the JWST GOODS-South field. This system resides in a small area $\sim4.5''\times4.5''$ ($24.6\times24.6$ pkpc$^2$), containing over 17 galaxy-size clumps with a total stellar mass of $10^{10}\ M_\odot$. The JQ system has a total star formation rate of 240 -- 270 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, placing it $\sim1$ dex above the median star formation rate-mass main sequence at this epoch. The high mass and star formation rate of the JQ galaxies are consistent with the star formation history of those unexpected massive quiescent galaxies observed at redshift 4-5, offering a plausible evolutionary pathway for the formation of such galaxies. We also detect a large [O III]+H$\beta$ emitting gaseous halo surrounding and connecting four galaxies in the JQ, suggesting the existence of heavy elements in the surrounding medium -- inner part of its circumgalactic medium (CGM). This provides direct evidence for the metal enrichment of galaxies' environments through merger-induced tidal stripping, just 800 Myr after the Big Bang.

Galactic-scale emission-line outflow from the radio-loud quasar 3C 191

Quasar feedback is routinely invoked as an indispensable ingredient in galaxy formation models. Galactic outflows are a crucial agent of quasar feedback that frequently manifest themselves in absorption and emission lines. Measuring the size and energetics of outflows based on absorption lines remains a challenge, and integral-field spectroscopy (IFS) mapping in emission lines is complementary. We present a VLT/SINFONI IFS mapping of quasar 3C 191 at $z \sim 2$, in which the outflow has been analyzed in absorption line spectroscopy. Three components are found based on the morphology and kinetics of [OIII]-emitting gas: a unshifted component which consistent with the systemic redshift and the location of the nucleus, a blueshifted in the north, and a redshifted in the south. The latter two components have velocities $\sim$ 600 km s$^{-1}$ and projected extents of 5 and 11 kpc, respectively, suggesting a biconical outflow structure. The blueshifted component's velocity is consistent with that derived from absorption lines. Using the electron density measured by the absorption lines and the luminosity and velocity of [OIII] outflow, we derive the mass outflow rate to be $\dot{M} \sim $ 9.5-13.4 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and kinetic luminosity $\dot{E}_{\rm kin}$ ~ 2.5-3.7 $\times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, consistent with absorption line analyses with VLT/Xshooter spectrum. The kinetic luminosity is only 0.01% of the bolometric luminosity, rendering a relatively weak outflow compared to typical expectation for effective feedback.
