Mass Generation for Axion Like Particles

The most widely accepted solution to the Strong CP problem is the QCD axion, whose traditional parameter space is relatively constrained. However, recent studies on exotic axion models have shown that this space can be significantly extended, opening up a wide range of previously unexplored possibilities for model building. I first review the current status of axions and axion-like particles, then focus on the challenges related to the origin of their masses and explore potential connections to other unresolved issues within the Standard Model.

How to Identify a Majoron: Effective Field Theories of Spontaneous Lepton Number Breaking

We revisit the traditional Type I, II and III Seesaw mechanisms in the presence of a complex scalar field charged under a global $U(1)$ symmetry that can be identified with lepton number and the Peccei-Quinn symmetry. After symmetry breaking, the radial mode becomes heavy while the angular mode appears as an axion-like particle, traditionally dubbed the Majoron. We construct the effective field theory obtained after integrating out the heavy states and analyse two matching orders: first removing the radial mode and then the Seesaw fields, and vice versa. Both procedures yield the same low-energy Lagrangian containing only Standard Model fields and the Majoron. Because a single vacuum expectation value fixes the mediator masses, the radial mode and every Majoron coupling, these models predict relations among observables rather than their individual size, and it is these relations that are testable. Indeed, the invisible Higgs width is locked to the universal suppression of the Higgs couplings, while the Majoron-lepton coupling is fixed by the measured non-unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix, and the two independently give comparable lower bounds on the same lepton-number breaking scale, of order $1$-$10$ TeV. Neutrinoless double beta decay with Majoron emission, by contrast, has no sensitivity in this class of models. The framework is thus falsifiable even when the new states lie far beyond experimental reach.

Crossing into the $m_a > f_a$ Region for Leptophilic ALPs

Axion-like particles (ALPs) are typically identified as pseudoscalars whose couplings are shift-symmetry invariant with the exception of their couplings to gauge bosons and their mass term. Additionally, the ALP mass $m_a$ is usually assumed to be (much) smaller than the ALP decay constant $f_a$. The latter condition is conservative, at best, and excludes part of the ALP parameter space that is presently viable. We revisit the criterion of the $m_a\ll f_a$ and perform an analysis focussing on leptophilic ALPs. In particular, we explore regions of the parameter space still uninvestigated, where $m_a>f_a$, thus providing a phenomenological study of the ALP-lepton couplings complementary to the existing literature. We point out that a leptophilic ALP may explain the $-3.8\sigma$ tension in the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of the electron for the Caesium determination in a large region of the $m_a\times f_a$ parameter space, testable in the near future through studies on $\mu\to e$ conversion in nuclei.

The COSMIC WISPers White Paper: The physics case for Weakly Interacting Slim Particles

Axions and other very weakly interacting slim particles (WISPs), with masses below 1 GeV, arise naturally in many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. In particular, they could offer a new framework to explain the nature of dark matter and may help address a range of puzzling observations in astrophysics and particle physics. This review provides an overview of ongoing WISP searches and outlines the prospects for the next decade, spanning their theoretical motivation, indirect signatures in astrophysical observations, and dedicated laboratory experiments. It is based on the work carried on by the EU-funded COST Action ``Cosmic WISPers in the Dark Universe: Theory, astrophysics, and experiments'' (CA21106, https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA21106). This network plays a key role in coordinating and supporting WISP searches across Europe, while also contributing to the development of a roadmap aimed at securing European leadership in this research area. It is emphasized that Europe is currently pursuing a rich, diverse, and cost-effective experimental program, with the potential to deliver one or more transformative discoveries.

WISPedia -- the WISPs Encyclopedia

The Weakly-Interacting Slim Particle encyclopedia (WISPedia) is a comprehensive reference work dedicated to the systematic compilation of theoretical models, Effective Field Theories, and frameworks involving Weakly Interacting Slim Particles (WISPs): a broad class of light, feebly coupled particles proposed in extensions of the Standard Model. In current times, where the number of models largely surpasses the number of new physics signals, this encyclopedia aims to provide a concise reference of their landscape. The goal is to provide a useful tool to the community to navigate among them. It does not aim to review all the models in detail, but to define their essential characteristics, and point the reader to useful and minimal material such as the original sources, review articles, tools and general compilations of bounds. Hence, the format of this reference resembles the direct style of a model encyclopedia of WISPs.

ALPaca: The ALP Automatic Computing Algorithm

The ALP Automatic Computing Algorithm, ALPaca, is an open source Python library devoted to studying the phenomenology of Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) with masses in the ranges $m_a \in [0.01 - 10]$ GeV. ALPaca provides a flexible and comprehensive framework to define ALP couplings at arbitrary energy scales, perform Renormalisation Group evolution and matching down to the desired low energy scale, and compute a large variety of ALP observables, with particular care to the meson decay sector. The package includes support for UV completions, experimental constraints, and visualisation tools, enabling both detailed analyses and broad parameter space exploration.

Comprehensive ALP Searches in Meson Decays

We present a comprehensive study of axion-like particles (ALPs) in meson decays, combining effective field theory and ultraviolet models within the open-source tool ALPaca. The analysis accounts for running and matching effects across energy scales, including non-perturbative QCD corrections via chiral perturbation theory. We discuss several benchmark models, both flavour-universal and non-universal, using the most up-to-date theoretical computations for ALP decays and branching ratios. Experimental signatures such as prompt, displaced, and invisible decays are included. A dedicated analysis of the Belle II anomaly in the decay $B^+ \to K^+ \nu \bar{\nu}$ is performed. Our results highlight the power of flavour observables in constraining ALPs and provide a versatile foundation for future searches.

V-Associated Production & Vector Boson Fusion as an LHC Signature of CP Violation

We investigate the role of vector boson fusion (VBF) and associated production with an electroweak boson (V-AP) of beyond-the-Standard-Model Higgses at the LHC in probing CP violation in extended Higgs sectors. Resonant production of a new Higgs boson through V-AP/VBF subsequently decaying into a Z boson and a 125 GeV Higgs boson h would be a robust sign of CP violation, since h has been measured to be (predominantly) a CP-even state. After identifying this and other sets of signatures which rely on V-AP/VBF to jointly uncover CP violation, we analyze the prospects to measure CP violation in this way for the complex two-Higgs-doublet-model at the High-Luminosity LHC.

Hidden Markov graphical models with state-dependent generalized hyperbolic distributions

In this paper we develop a novel hidden Markov graphical model to investigate time-varying interconnectedness between different financial markets. To identify conditional correlation structures under varying market conditions and accommodate stylized facts embedded in financial time series, we rely upon the generalized hyperbolic family of distributions with time-dependent parameters evolving according to a latent Markov chain. We exploit its location-scale mixture representation to build a penalized EM algorithm for estimating the state-specific sparse precision matrices by means of an $L_1$ penalty. The proposed approach leads to regime-specific conditional correlation graphs that allow us to identify different degrees of network connectivity of returns over time. The methodology's effectiveness is validated through simulation exercises under different scenarios. In the empirical analysis we apply our model to daily returns of a large set of market indexes, cryptocurrencies and commodity futures over the period 2017-2023.

GeV ALP from TeV Vector-like leptons

We present a model where a GeV axion-like-particle (ALP) is predicted in a large portion of the parameter space due to the presence of explicit Peccei-Quinn symmetry-breaking terms in an exotic leptonic sector. The latter provides a solution to the muon $g-2$ anomaly, within the framework of the Linear Seesaw neutrino mechanism. The spectrum is extended by a complex scalar singlet only transforming under the Peccei-Quinn symmetry, which generates the ALP. Its couplings with fermions can continuously span over many orders of magnitude, which constitutes a specific feature of this model in contrast to generic ultraviolet constructions. Interestingly, these couplings are suppressed by the ALP characteristic scale that can be as low as the TeV scale, which represents a novel feature of the model and opens up to several phenomenological consequences.

ALPs and HNLs at LHC and Muon Colliders: Uncovering New Couplings and Signals

Axion-like particles (ALPs) and heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) are two well-motivated classes of particles beyond the Standard Model. It is intriguing to explore the new detection opportunities that may arise if both particle types coexist. Part of the authors already investigated this scenario in a previous publication, within a simplified model containing an ALP and a single HNL, identifying particularly promising processes that could be searched for at the LHC. In this paper, we first consider the same setup with a broader range of both production processes and final states, both at the High-Luminosity LHC and at a future muon collider. Subsequently, we expand it to the more realistic scenario with at least two HNLs, necessary to describe the active neutrino masses. Different phenomenological signals are expected and we examine the complexities that emerge in this setup. This study paves the way for dedicated analysis at (forthcoming) colliders, potentially pinpointing the dynamics of ALPs and HNLs.

Hilbert series for covariants and their applications to Minimal Flavor Violation

We elaborate how to apply the Hilbert series method to enumerating group covariants, which transform under any given representation, including but going beyond group invariants. Mathematically, group covariants form a module over the ring of the invariants. The number of independent covariants is given by the rank of the module, which can be computed by taking a ratio of two Hilbert series. In many cases, the rank equals the dimension of the group covariant representation. When this happens, we say that there is a \textit{rank saturation}. We apply this technology to revisit the hypothesis of Minimal Flavor Violation in constructing Effective Field Theories beyond the Standard Model. We find that rank saturation is guaranteed in this case, leading to the important consequence that the MFV symmetry principle does not impose any restriction on the EFT, \textit{i.e.} MFV SMEFT = SMEFT, in the absence of additional assumptions.

The Minimal Massive Majoron Seesaw Model

A convincing explanation of the smallness of neutrino masses is represented by the Type-I Seesaw mechanism, where the two measured neutrino mass differences can be generated by introducing at least two right-handed neutrinos. In an ultraviolet complete model, it is possible to dynamically generate the heavy Majorana scale through the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a global Abelian symmetry and the most economical realisation consists in coupling the two exotic neutral leptons to a singlet complex scalar field. The associated Goldstone boson is often dubbed as Majoron, which may achieve a non-vanishing mass by means of a small term that explicitly breaks the Abelian symmetry. In a generic model, the neutrino and Majoron mass generation mechanisms are completely uncorrelated. In this paper, instead, we reduce the landscape of possible models proposing a unique, minimal and predictive framework in which these two types of masses are strictly tied and arise from the same source. Bounds from various terrestrial and astrophysical experiments are discussed.

Quantile mixed graphical models with an application to mass public shootings in the United States

Over the last fifty years, the United States have experienced hundreds of mass public shootings that resulted in thousands of victims. Characterized by their frequent occurrence and devastating nature, mass shootings have become a major public health hazard that dramatically impact safety and well-being of individuals and communities. Given the epidemic traits of this phenomenon, there have been concerted efforts to understand the root causes that lead to public mass shootings in order to implement effective prevention strategies. We propose a quantile mixed graphical model for investigating the intricacies of inter- and infra-domain relationships of this complex phenomenon, where conditional relations between discrete and continuous variables are modeled without stringent distributional assumptions using Parzen's definition of mid-quantile. To retrieve the graph structure and recover only the most relevant connections, we consider the neighborhood selection approach in which conditional mid-quantiles of each variable in the network are modeled as a sparse function of all others. We propose a two-step procedure to estimate the graph where, in the first step, conditional mid-probabilities are obtained semi-parametrically and, in the second step, the model parameters are estimated by solving an implicit equation with a LASSO penalty.

Early Universe hypercharge breaking and neutrino mass generation

We show that the conditions allowing for a spontaneous breaking of the $U(1)_Y$ hypercharge gauge symmetry of the Standard Model (SM) in the early Universe are generically present in extensions of the SM addressing the generation of light neutrino masses via radiative contributions. In such scenarios, the breaking of (hyper)charge at high-temperatures yields new possibilities for explaining the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. Considering for concreteness the Zee-Babu radiative neutrino mass generation model, we show that a period of hypercharge breaking prior to the electroweak phase transition could allow for successful baryogenesis via a non-conventional leptogenesis mechanism, based on the presence of charge-breaking masses for the SM leptons in the early Universe.

Estimating causal quantile exposure response functions via matching

We develop new matching estimators for estimating causal quantile exposure-response functions and quantile exposure effects with continuous treatments. We provide identification results for the parameters of interest and establish the asymptotic properties of the derived estimators. We introduce a two-step estimation procedure. In the first step, we construct a matched data set via generalized propensity score matching, adjusting for measured confounding. In the second step, we fit a kernel quantile regression to the matched set. We also derive a consistent estimator of the variance of the matching estimators. Using simulation studies, we compare the introduced approach with existing alternatives in various settings. We apply the proposed method to Medicare claims data for the period 2012-2014, and we estimate the causal effect of exposure to PM$_{2.5}$ on the length of hospital stay for each zip code of the contiguous United States.

Unified unconditional regression for multivariate quantiles, M-quantiles and expectiles

In this paper, we develop a unified regression approach to model unconditional quantiles, M-quantiles and expectiles of multivariate dependent variables exploiting the multidimensional Huber's function. To assess the impact of changes in the covariates across the entire unconditional distribution of the responses, we extend the work of Firpo et al. (2009) by running a mean regression of the recentered influence function on the explanatory variables. We discuss the estimation procedure and establish the asymptotic properties of the derived estimators. A data-driven procedure is also presented to select the tuning constant of the Huber's function. The validity of the proposed methodology is explored with simulation studies and through an application using the Survey of Household Income and Wealth 2016 conducted by the Bank of Italy.
