Localized modes in dense repulsive and attractive Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit and Rabi couplings

We consider a binary Bose-Einstein condensate with linear and nonlinear interactions between its components, which emulate the spinor system with spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings. For a relatively dense condensate, 1D coupled equations with the nonpolynomial nonlinearity of both repulsive and attractive signs are derived from the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Profiles of modes confined in an external potential under the action of the self-repulsion, and self-trapped solitons in the case of the self-attraction, are found in a numerical form and by means of analytical approximations. In the former case, the interplay of the SO and Rabi couplings with the repulsive nonlinearity strongly distorts shapes of the trapped modes, adding conspicuous side lobes to them. In the case of the attractive nonlinearity, the most essential result is reduction of the collapse threshold under the action of the SO and Rabi couplings.

Self-trapping of Fermi and Bose gases under spatially modulated repulsive nonlinearity and transverse confinement

We show that self-localized ground states can be created in the spin-balanced gas of fermions with repulsion between the spin components, whose strength grows from the center to periphery, in combination with the harmonic-oscillator (HO) trapping potential acting in one or two transverse directions. We also consider the ground state in the non-interacting Fermi gas under the action of the spatially growing tightness of the one- or two-dimensional (1D or 2D) HO confinement. These settings are considered in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsacker (TF-vW) density functional. It is found that the vW correction to the simple TF approximation (the gradient term) is nearly negligible in all situations. The properties of the ground state under the action of the 2D and 1D HO confinement with the tightness growing in the transverse directions is investigated too for the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with the self-repulsive nonlinearity.

Enhancement of four reflection shifts by a three-layer surface plasmon resonance

We investigate the effect of a surface plasmon resonance on Goos-Hanchen and Imbert-Fedorov spatial and angular shifts in the reflection of a light beam by considering a three-layer system made of glass, gold and air. We calculate these spatial and angular shifts as a function of the incidence angle showing that they are strongly enhanced in correspondence of the resonant angle. In particular, we find giant spatial and angular Goos-Hanchen shits for the p-wave light close to the plasmon resonance. We also predict a similar, but less pronounced, resonant effect on spatial and angular Imbert-Fedorov shifts for both s-wave and p-wave light.

From Narrow to Broad Feshbach Resonances: Condensate Fraction of Cooper Pairs and Preformed Molecules

We extend our previous investigations of fermionic condensation in broad Feshbach resonances by using the two-channel model developed for narrow Feshbach resonances. We investigate two crossovers: the BCS-BEC crossover by changing the s-wave scattering length and the crossover from a narrow to a broad resonance by changing the atom-molecule coupling. At zero temperature we analyze, as a function of both atom-molecule coupling and s-wave scattering length, the chemical potential, the energy gap, and the condensate fraction of atoms. In particular, we predict the contribution of Cooper pairs and preformed molecules to the total condensate density along the two crossovers.

Contact intensity and extended hydrodynamics in the BCS-BEC crossover

In the first part of this chapter we analyze the contact intensity $C$, which has been introduced by Tan [Ann. Phys. 323, 2952 (2008)] and appears in several physical observables of the strongly correlated two-component Fermi gas. We calculate the contact $C$ in the full BCS-BEC crossover for a uniform superfluid Fermi gas by using an efficient parametetrization of the ground-state energy. In the case of harmonic confinement, within the Thomas-Fermi approximation, we derive analytical formulas of $C$ in the three relevant limits of the crossover. In the second part of this chapter we discuss the extended superfluid hydrodynamics we have recently proposed to describe static and dynamical collective properties of the Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover. In particular we show the relation with the effective theory for the Goldstone field derived by Son and Wingate [Ann. Phys. 321, 197 (2006)] on the basis of conformal invariance. By using our equations of extended hydrodynamics we determine nonlinear sound waves, static response function and structure factor of a generic superfluid at zero temperature.

Pair condensation in the BCS-BEC crossover of ultracold atoms loaded onto a 2D square lattice

We investigate the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of weakly-bound Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) of strongly-bound molecular dimers in a gas of ultracold atoms loaded on a two-dimensional optical lattice. By using the the mean-field BCS equations of the emerging Hubbard model and the concept of off-diagonal-long-range-order for fermions we calculate analytically and numerically the pair binding energy, the energy gap and the condensate fraction of Cooper pairs as a function of interaction strength and filling fractor of atoms in the lattice at zero temperature.

Dynamical properties of the unitary Fermi gas: collective modes and shock waves

We discuss the unitary Fermi gas made of dilute and ultracold atoms with an infinite s-wave inter-atomic scattering length. First we introduce an efficient Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsacker density functional which describes accurately various static properties of the unitary Fermi gas trapped by an external potential. Then, the sound velocity and the collective frequencies of oscillations in a harmonic trap are derived from extended superfluid hydrodynamic equations which are the Euler-Lagrange equations of a Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsacker action functional. Finally, we show that this amazing Fermi gas supports supersonic and subsonic shock waves.

Condensate Fraction in Neutron Matter

We study the Bose-Einstein condensation of fermionic pairs in the uniform neutron matter by using the concept of the off-diagonal long-range order of the two-body density matrix of the system. We derive explicit formulas for the condensate density $ρ_c$ and the condensate fraction $ρ_c/ρ$ in terms of the scaled pairing energy gap $Δ/ε_F$, where $ε_F$ is the Fermi energy. We calculate the condensate fraction $ρ_c/ρ$ as a function of the density $ρ$ by using previously obtained results for the pairing gap $Δ$. We find the maximum condensate fraction $(ρ_c/ρ)_{max}= 0.42$ at the density $ρ=5.3\cdot 10^{-4}$ fm$^{-3}$, which corresponds to the Fermi wave number $k_F= 0.25$ fm$^{-1}$.

Destruction of attractive bosonic cloud due to high spatial coherence in tight trap

We study coherence of a trapped bosonic cloud with attractive finite-range interaction in a tight harmonic trap. One-body density and pair-distribution function in the ground state for different trap sizes are calculated. We also calculate healing length and the correlation length which signify the presence of high spatial coherence in a very tight trap leading to the destruction of the condensate for a fixed particle number. This is in marked variance with the usual collapse of the attractive metastable condensate when N > Ncr . Thus we investigate the critical frequency and critical size of the trap for the existence of attractive Bose-Einstein condensation. The finite-range interaction gives a nonlocal effect in the effective many-body potential, and we observe a high-density stable branch besides the known metastable branch. Moreover, the new branch shows universal behavior even in the very tight trap.

Supersonic and subsonic shock waves in the unitary Fermi gas

We investigate shock waves in the unitary Fermi gas by using the zero-temperature equations of superfluid hydrodynamics. We obtain analytical solutions for the dynamics of a localized perturbation of the uniform gas. These supersonic bright and subsonic dark solutions produce, after a transient time, an extremely large (divergent) density gradient: the shock. We calculate the time of formation of the shock and also simulate the space-time behavior of the waves by solving generalized hydrodynamic equations, which include a reliable dispersive regularization of the shock. We find that the shock spreads into wave ripples whose properties crucially depend on the chosen initial configuration.

Three-component Fermi gas with SU(3) symmetry: BCS-BEC crossover in three and two dimensions

We analyze the BCS-BEC crossover for a Fermi gas made of neutral atoms in three hyperfine states with a SU(3) invariant attractive interaction. By solving the extended BCS equations for the total number of particles and the pairing gap, we calculate at zero temperature the pairing gap, the population imbalance, the condensate fraction and the first sound velocity of the uniform system as a function of the interaction strength in both three and two dimensions. Contrary to the three-dimensional case, in two dimensions the condensate fraction approaches the value 1 only for an extremely large interaction strength and, moreover, the sound velocity gives a clear signature of the disappearance of one of the three hyperfine components.

Viscosity-entropy ratio of the unitary Fermi gas from zero-temperature elementary excitations

We investigate the low-temperature behavior of the ratio between the shear viscosity ηand the entropy density s in the unitary Fermi gas by using a model based on the zero-temperature spectra of both bosonic collective modes and fermonic single-particle excitations. Our theoretical curve of η/s as a function of the temperature T is in qualitative agreement with the experimental data of trapped ultracold 6Li atomic gases. We find the minimum value η/s \simeq 0.44 (in units of \hbar/k_B) at the temperature T/T_F \simeq 0.27, with T_F the Fermi temperature.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in linearly coupled disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates

We study effects of tunnel coupling on a pair of parallel disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates with the self-attractive intrinsic nonlinearity. Each condensate is trapped in a combination of in-plane and transverse harmonic-oscillator potentials. It is shown that, depending on the self-interaction strength and tunneling coupling, the ground state of the system exhibits a phase transition which links three configurations: a symmetric one with equal numbers of atoms in the coupled condensates, an asymmetric configuration with a population imbalance (a manifestation of the macroscopic quantum self-trapping), and the collapsing state. A modification of the phase diagram of the system in the presence of vortices in the disk-shaped condensates is reported too. The study of dynamics around the stationary configurations reveals properties which strongly depend on the symmetry of the configuration.

Coherence and entanglement in the ground-state of a bosonic Josephson junction:from macroscopic Schrödinger cats to separable Fock states

We consider a bosonic Josephson junction made of $N$ ultracold and dilute atoms confined by a quasi one-dimensional double-well potential within the two-site Bose-Hubbard model framework. The behaviour of the system is investigated at zero temperature by varying the inter-atomic interaction from the strongly attractive regime to the repulsive one. We show that the ground-state exhibits a crossover from a macroscopic Schrödinger-cat state to a separable Fock state through an atomic coherent regime. By diagonalizing the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian we characterize the emergence of the mascroscopic cat states by calculating the Fisher information $F$, the coherence by means of the visibility $α$ of the interference fringes in the momentum distribution, and the quantum correlations by using the entanglement entropy $S$. Both Fisher information and visibility are shown to be related to the ground state energy by employing the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. This result, together with a perturbative calculation of the ground-state energy, makes possible to obtain simple analytical formulas for $F$ and $α$ over a range of interactions, in excellent agreement with the exact diagonalization of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. In the attractive regime the entanglement entropy attains values very close to its upper limit for a specific interaction strength lying in the region where coherence is lost and self trapping sets in.

Condensate formation with three-component ultracold fermions

We investigate the formation of Bose-Einstein condensation and population imbalance in a three-component Fermi superfluid by increasing the U(3) invariant attractive interaction. We consider the system at zero temperature in three dimensions and also in two dimensions. Within the mean-field theory, we derive explicit formulas for number densities, gap order parameter, condensate density and condensate fraction of the uniform system, and analyze them in the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) of strongly-bound molecular dimers. In addition, we study this Fermi mixture trapped by a harmonic potential: we calculate the density profiles of the three components and the condensate density profile of Cooper pairs in the BCS-BEC crossover.

Low-temperature thermodynamics of the unitary Fermi gas: superfluid fraction, first sound and second sound

We investigate the low-temperature thermodynamics of the unitary Fermi gas by introducing a model based on the zero-temperature spectra of both bosonic collective modes and fermonic single-particle excitations. We calculate the Helmholtz free energy and from it we obtain the entropy, the internal energy and the chemical potential as a function of the temperature. By using these quantities and the Landau's expression for the superfluid density we determine analytically the superfluid fraction, the critical temperature, the first sound velocity and the second sound velocity. We compare our analytical results with other theoretical predictions and experimental data of ultracold atoms and dilute neutron matter.

Extended Thomas-Fermi Density Functional for the Unitary Fermi Gas

We determine the energy density $ξ(3/5) n ε_F$ and the gradient correction $λ\hbar^2(\nabla n)^2/(8m n)$ of the extended Thomas-Fermi (ETF) density functional, where $n$ is number density and $ε_F$ is Fermi energy, for a trapped two-components Fermi gas with infinite scattering length (unitary Fermi gas) on the basis of recent diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 99}, 233201 (2007)]. In particular we find that $ξ=0.455$ and $λ=0.13$ give the best fit of the DMC data with an even number $N$ of particles. We also study the odd-even splitting $γN^{1/9} \hbar ω$ of the ground-state energy for the unitary gas in a harmonic trap of frequency $ω$ determining the constant $γ$. Finally we investigate the effect of the gradient term in the time-dependent ETF model by introducing generalized Galilei-invariant hydrodynamics equations.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking and collapse in bosonic Josephson junctions

We investigate an attractive atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped by a double-well potential in the axial direction and by a harmonic potential in the transverse directions. We obtain numerically, for the first time, a quantum phase diagram which includes all the three relevant phases of the system: Josephson, spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB), and collapse. We consider also the coherent dynamics of the BEC and calculate the frequency of population-imbalance mode in the Josephson phase and in the SSB phase up to the collapse. We show that these phases can be observed by using ultracold vapors of 7Li atoms in a magneto-optical trap.
