Stability of attractive bosonic cloud with van der Waals interaction

We investigate the structure and stability of Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{7}$Li atoms with realistic van der Waals interaction by using the potential harmonic expansion method. Besides the known low-density metastable solution with contact delta function interaction, we find a stable branch at a higher density which corresponds to the formation of an atomic cluster. Comparison with the results of non-local effective interaction is also presented. We analyze the effect of trap size on the transition between the two branches of solutions. We also compute the loss rate of a Bose condensate due to two- and three-body collisions.

Condensate fraction in metallic superconductors and ultracold atomic vapors

We investigate the condensate density and the condensate fraction of conduction electrons in weak-coupling superconductors by using the BCS theory and the concept of off-diagonal-long-range-order. We discuss the analytical formula of the zero-temperature condensate density of Cooper pairs as a function of Debye frequency and energy gap, and calculate the condensate fraction for some metals. We study the density of Cooper pairs also at finite temperature showing its connection with the gap order parameter and the effects of the electron-phonon coupling. Finally, we analyze similarities and differences between superconductors and ultracold Fermi atoms in the determination of their condensate density by using the BCS theory.

Nonlinear quantum model for atomic Josephson junctions with one and two bosonic species

We study atomic Josephson junctions (AJJs) with one and two bosonic species confined by a double-well potential. Proceeding from the second quantized Hamiltonian, we show that it is possible to describe the zero-temperature AJJs microscopic dynamics by means of extended Bose-Hubbard (EBH) models, which include usually-neglected nonlinear terms. Within the mean-field approximation, the Heisenberg equations derived from such two-mode models provide a description of AJJs macroscopic dynamics in terms of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). We discuss the possibility to distinguish the Rabi, Josephson, and Fock regimes, in terms of the macroscopic parameters which appear in the EBH Hamiltonians and, then, in the ODEs. We compare the predictions for the relative populations of the Bose gases atoms in the two wells obtained from the numerical solutions of the two-mode ODEs, with those deriving from the direct numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs). Our investigations shows that the nonlinear terms of the ODEs are crucial to achieve a good agreement between ODEs and GPEs approaches, and in particular to give quantitative predictions of the self-trapping regime.

Generalized nonpolynomial Schrodinger equations for matter waves under anisotropic transverse confinement

Starting from the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation we derive a 1D generalized nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation, which describes the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates under the action of a generic potential in the longitudinal axial direction and of an anisotropic harmonic potential in the transverse radial direction. This equation reduces to the familiar 1D nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation [Phys. Rev. A 65, 043614 (2002)] in the case of isotropic transverse harmonic confinement. In addition, we show that if the longitudinal potential models a periodic optical lattice the 3D GPE can be mapped into a 1D generalized discrete nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation.

Atomic Josephson junction with two bosonic species

We study an atomic Josephson junction (AJJ) in presence of two interacting Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) confined in a double well trap. We assume that bosons of different species interact with each other. The macroscopic wave functions of the two components obey to a system of two 3D coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPE). We write the Lagrangian of the system, and from this we derive a system of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODE), for which the coupled pendula represent the mechanic analogous. These differential equations control the dynamical behavior of the fractional imbalance and of the relative phase of each bosonic component. We perform the stability analysis around the points which preserve the symmetry and get an analytical formula for the oscillation frequency around the stable points. Such a formula could be used as an indirect measure of the inter-species s-wave scattering length. We also study the oscillations of each fractional imbalance around zero and non zero - the macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) - time averaged values. For different values of the inter-species interaction amplitude, we carry out this study both by directly solving the two GPE and by solving the corresponding coupled pendula equations. We show that, under certain conditions, the predictions of these two approaches are in good agreement. Moreover, we calculate the crossover value of the inter-species interaction amplitude which signs the onset of MQST.

Solitons and solitary vortices in "pancake"-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates

We study fundamental and vortical solitons in disk-morphed Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) subject to strong confinement along the axial direction. Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), we proceed to an effective 2D nonpolynomial Schroeodinger equation (NPSE) derived by means of the integration over the axial coordinate. Results produced by the latter equation are in very good agreement with those obtained from the full 3D GPE, including cases when the formal 2D equation with the cubic nonlinearity is unreliable. The 2D NPSE is used to predict density profiles and dynamical stability of repulsive and attractive BECs with zero and finite topological charge in various planar trapping configurations, including the axisymmetric harmonic confinement and 1D periodic potential. In particular, we find a stable dynamical regime that was not reported before, viz., periodic splitting and recombination of trapped vortices with topological charge 2 or 3 in the self-attractive BEC.

Application of the Feshbach-resonance management to a tightly confined Bose-Einstein condensate

We study suppression of the collapse and stabilization of matter-wave solitons by means of time-periodic modulation of the effective nonlinearity, using the nonpolynomial Schroedinger equation (NPSE) for BEC trapped in a tight cigar-shaped potential. By means of systematic simulations, a stability region is identified in the plane of the modulation amplitude and frequency. In the low-frequency regime, solitons feature chaotic evolution, although they remain robust objects.

Zero Sound and First Sound in a Disk-Shaped Normal Fermi gas

We study the zero sound and the first sound in a dilute and ultracold disk-shaped normal Fermi gas with a strong harmonic confinement along the axial direction and uniform in the two planar directions. Working at zero temperature we calculate the chemical potential $μ$ of the fermionic fluid as a function of the uniform planar density $ρ$ and find that $μ$ changes its slope in correspondence to the filling of harmonic axial modes (shell effects). Within the linear response theory, and under the random phase approximation, we calculate the velocity $c^{0}_s$ of the zero sound. We find that also $c^0_s$ changes its slope in correspondence of the filling of the harmonic axial modes and that this effect depends on the Fermi-Fermi scattering length $a_F$. In the collisional regime, we calculate the velocity $c_s$ of first sound showing that $c_s$ displays jumps at critical densities fixed by the scattering length $a_F$. Finally, we discuss the experimental achievability of these zero sound and first sound waves with ultracold alkali-metal atoms.

Superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture from weak-coupling to unitarity

We investigate the zero-temperature properties of a superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture by introducing a set of coupled Galilei-invariant nonlinear Schrödinger equations valid from weak-coupling to unitarity. The Bose dynamics is described by a Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation including beyond-mean-field corrections possessing the correct weak-coupling and unitarity limits. The dynamics of the two-component Fermi superfluid is described by a density-functional equation including beyond-mean-field terms with correct weak-coupling and unitarity limits. The present set of equations is equivalent to the equations of generalized superfluid hydrodynamics, which take into account also surface effects. The equations describe the mixture properly as the Bose-Bose repulsive (positive) and Fermi-Fermi attractive (negative) scattering lengths are varied from zero to infinity in the presence of a Bose-Fermi interaction. The present model is tested numerically as the Bose-Bose and Fermi-Fermi scattering lengths are varied over wide ranges covering the weak-coupling to unitarity transition.

Nonlinear Schroedinger equation for a superfluid Bose gas from weak coupling to unitarity: Study of vortices

We introduce a nonlinear Schroedinger equation to describe the dynamics of a superfluid Bose gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling regime, where $a n^{1/3}\ll 1$ with $a$ the inter-atomic s-wave scattering length and $n$ the bosonic density, to the unitarity limit, where $a\to +\infty$. We call this equation the {unitarity Schroedinger equation} (USE). The zero-temperature bulk equation of state of this USE is parametrized by the Lee-Yang-Huang low-density expansion and Jastrow calculations at unitarity. With the help of the USE we study the profiles of quantized vortices and vortex-core radius in a uniform Bose gas. We also consider quantized vortices in a Bose gas under cylindrically-symmetric harmonic confinement and study their profile and chemical potential using the USE and compare the results with those obtained from the Gross-Pitaevskii-type equations valid in the weak-coupling limit. Finally, the USE is applied to calculate the breathing modes of the confined Bose gas as a function of the scattering length.

Matter-wave vortices in cigar-shaped and toroidal waveguides

We study vortical states in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) filling a cigar-shaped trap. An effective one-dimensional (1D) nonpolynomial Schroedinger equation (NPSE) is derived in this setting, for the models with both repulsive and attractive inter-atomic interactions. Analytical formulas for the density profiles are obtained from the NPSE in the case of self-repulsion within the Thomas-Fermi approximation, and in the case of the self-attraction as exact solutions (bright solitons). A crucially important ingredient of the analysis is the comparison of these predictions with direct numerical solutions for the vortex states in the underlying 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE). The comparison demonstrates that the NPSE provides for a very accurate approximation, in all the cases, including the prediction of the stability of the bright solitons and collapse threshold for them. In addition to the straight cigar-shaped trap, we also consider a torus-shaped configuration. In that case, we find a threshold for the transition from the axially uniform state, with the transverse intrinsic vorticity, to a symmetry-breaking pattern, due to the instability in the self-attractive BEC filling the circular trap.

Shell Effects in the First Sound Velocity of an Ultracold Fermi Gas

We investigate the first sound of a normal dilute and ultracold two-component Fermi gas in a harmonic microtube, i.e. a cylinder with harmonic transverse radial confinement in the length-scale of microns. We show that the velocity of the sound that propagates along the axial direction strongly depends on the dimensionality of the system. In particular, we predict that the first-sound velocity display shell effects: by increasing the density, that is by inducing the crossover from one-dimension to three-dimensions, the first-sound velocity shows jumps in correspondence with the filling of harmonic modes. The experimental achievability of these effects is discussed by considering 40K atoms.

One-dimensional superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture: mixing, demixing and bright solitons

We study a ultra-cold and dilute superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a strictly one-dimensional atomic waveguide by using a set of coupled nonlinear mean-field equations obtained from the Lieb-Liniger energy density for bosons and the Gaudin-Yang energy density for fermions. We consider a finite Bose-Fermi inter-atomic strength g_{bf} and both periodic and open boundary conditions. We find that with periodic boundary conditions, i.e. in a quasi-1D ring, a uniform Bose-Fermi mixture is stable only with a large fermionic density. We predict that at small fermionic densities the ground state of the system displays demixing if g_{bf}>0 and may become a localized Bose-Fermi bright soliton for g_{bf}<0. Finally, we show, using variational and numerical solution of the mean-field equations, that with open boundary conditions, i.e. in a quasi-1D cylinder, the Bose-Fermi bright soliton is the unique ground state of the system with a finite number of particles, which could exhibit a partial mixing-demixing transition. In this case the bright solitons are demonstrated to be dynamically stable. The experimental realization of these Bose-Fermi bright solitons seems possible with present setups.

Kirzhnits gradient expansion for a D-dimensional Fermi gas

For an ideal D-dimensional Fermi gas under generic external confinement we derive the correcting coefficient $(D-2)/3D$ of the von Weizsacker term in the kinetic energy density. To obtain this coefficient we use the Kirzhnits semiclassical expansion of the number operator up to the second order in the Planck constant $\hbar$. Within this simple and direct approach we determine the differential equation of the density profile and the density functional of the Fermi gas. In the case D=2 we find that the Kirzhnits gradient corrections vanish to all order in $\hbar$.

Condensate Fraction of a Two-Dimensional Attractive Fermi Gas

We investigate the Bose-Einstein condensation of fermionic pairs in a two-dimensional uniform two-component Fermi superfluid obtaining an explicit formula for the condensate density as a function of the chemical potential and the energy gap. By using the mean-field extended BCS theory, we analyze, as a function of the bound-state energy, the off-diagonal long-range order in the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of weakly-bound Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) of strongly-bound molecular dimers.

Mixing-demixing transition and collapse of a vortex state in a quasi-two-dimensional boson-fermion mixture

We investigate the mixing-demixing transition and the collapse in a quasi-two-dimensional degenerate boson-fermion mixture (DBFM) with a bosonic vortex. We solve numerically a quantum-hydrodynamic model based on a new density functional which accurately takes into account the dimensional crossover. It is demonstrated that with the increase of interspecies repulsion, a mixed state of DBFM could turn into a demixed state. The system collapses for interspecies attraction above a critical value which depends on the vortex quantum number. For interspecies attraction just below this critical limit there is almost complete mixing of boson and fermion components. Such mixed and demixed states of a DBFM could be experimentally realized by varying an external magnetic field near a boson-fermion Feshbach resonance, which will result in a continuous variation of interspecies interaction.

Self-bound droplet of Bose and Fermi atoms in one dimension: Collective properties in mean-field and Tonks-Girardeau regimes

We investigate a dilute mixture of bosons and spin-polarized fermions in one-dimension. With an attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length the ground-state is a self-bound droplet, i.e. a Bose-Fermi bright soliton where the Bose and Fermi clouds are superimposed. We find that the quantum fluctuations stabilize the Bose-Fermi soliton such that the one-dimensional bright soliton exists for any finite attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length. We study density profile and collective excitations of the atomic bright soliton showing that they depend on the bosonic regime involved: mean-field or Tonks-Girardeau.
