Fermi-Bose mixture across a Feshbach resonance

We study a dilute mixture of degenerate bosons and fermions across a Feshbach resonance of the Fermi-Fermi scattering length $a_F$. This scattering length is renormalized by the boson-induced interaction between fermions and its value is crucial to determine the phase diagram of the system. For the mixture in a box and a positive Bose-Fermi scattering length, we show that there are three possibilities: a single uniform mixed phase, a purely fermionic phase coexisting with a mixed phase, and a purely fermionic phase coexisting with a purely bosonic one. As $1/a_F$ is increased from a negative value to the Feshbach resonance ($1/a_F=0$) the region of pure separation increases and the other two regions are strongly reduced. Above the Feshbach resonance ($1/a_F>0$), pairs of Fermi atoms become Bose-condensed molecules. We find that these molecules are fully spatially separated from the bosonic atoms when $1/a_F$ exceedes a critical value. For a negative Bose-Fermi scattering length we deduce the condition for collapse, which coincides with the onset of dynamical instability of the fully mixed phase. We consider also the mixture in a harmonic trap and determine the conditions for partial demixing, full demixing and collapse. The experimental implications of our results are investigated by analyzing mixtures of $^6$Li--$^{23}$Na and $^{40}$K--$^{87}$Rb atoms.

Vector solitons in nearly-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

We derive a system of nonpolynomial Schroedinger equations (NPSEs) for one-dimensional wave functions of two components in a binary self-attractive Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in a cigar-shaped trap. The system is obtained by means of the variational approximation, starting from the coupled 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equations and assuming, as usual, the factorization of 3D wave functions. The system can be obtained in a tractable form under a natural condition of symmetry between the two species. A family of vector (two-component) soliton solutions is constructed. Collisions between orthogonal solitons (ones belonging to the different components) are investigated by means of simulations. The collisions are essentially inelastic. They result in strong excitation of intrinsic vibrations in the solitons, and create a small orthogonal component ("shadow") in each colliding soliton. The collision may initiate collapse, which depends on the mass and velocities of the solitons.

Mean-Field vs Monte-Carlo equation of state for the expansion of a Fermi superfluid in the BCS-BEC crossover

The equation of state (EOS) of a Fermi superfluid is investigated in the BCS-BEC crossover at zero temperature. We discuss the EOS based on Monte-Carlo (MC) data and asymptotic expansions and the EOS derived from the extended BCS (EBCS) mean-field theory. Then we introduce a time-dependent density functional, based on the bulk EOS and Landau's superfluid hydrodynamics with a von Weizsäcker-type correction, to study the free expansion of the Fermi superfluid. We calculate the aspect ratio and the released energy of the expanding Fermi cloud showing that MC EOS and EBCS EOS are both compatible with the available experimental data of $^6$Li atoms. We find that the released energy satisfies an approximate analytical formula that is quite accurate in the BEC regime. For an anisotropic droplet, our numerical simulations show an initially faster reversal of anisotropy in the BCS regime, later suppressed by the BEC fluid.

Expansion of a Fermi Cloud in the BCS-BEC Crossover

We study the free expansion of a dilute two-component Fermi gas with attractive interspecies interaction in the BCS-BEC crossover. We apply a time-dependent parameter-free density-functional theory by using two choices of the equation of state: an analytic formula based on Monte Carlo data and the mean-field equation of state resulting from the extended BCS equations. The calculated axial and transverse radii and the aspect ratio of the expanding cloud are compared to experimental data on vapors of ^6Li atoms. Remarkably, the mean-field theory shows a better agreement with the experiments than the theory based on the Monte Carlo equation of state. Both theories predict a measurable dependence of the aspect ratio on expansion time and on scattering length.

Beyond Mean-Field Theory for Attractive Bosons under Transverse Harmonic Confinement

We study a dilute gas of attractive bosons confined in a harmonic cylinder, i.e. under cylindric confinement due to a transverse harmonic potential. We introduce a many-body wave function which extends the Bethe ansatz proposed by McGuire (J. Math. Phys. {\bf 5}, 622 (1964)) by including a variational transverse Gaussian shape. We investigate the ground state properties of the system comparing them with the ones of the one-dimensional (1D) attractive Bose gas. We find that the gas becomes ultra 1D as a consequence of the attractive interaction: the transverse width of the Bose gas reduces by increasing the number of particles up to a critical width below which there is the collapse of the cloud. In addition, we derive a simple analytical expression for the simmetry-breaking solitonic density profile of the ground-state, which generalize the one deduced by Calogero and Degasperis (Phys. Rev. A {\bf 11}, 265 (1975)). This bright-soliton analytical solution shows near the collapse small deviations with respect to the 3D mean-field numerical solution. Finally, we show that our variational Gauss-McGuire theory is always more accurate than the McGuire theory. In addition, we prove that for small numbers of particles the Gauss-McGuire theory is more reliable than the mean-field theory described by the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Multi Solitons of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Three-Dimensional Ring

A Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) made of alkali-metal atoms at ultra-low temperatures is well described by the three-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the so-called Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE). Here we consider an attractive BEC in a ring and by solving the GPE we predict the existence of bright solitons with single and multi-peaks, showing that they have a limited domain of dynamical stability. We also discuss finite-temperature effects on the transition from the uniform phase to the localized phase.

Colored $1/f^α$ noise and the Order to Chaos Transition in Quantum Mechanics

The spectral statistic $δ_n$ measures the fluctuations of the number of energy levels around its mean value. It has been shown that chaotic quantum systems display $1/f$ noise (pink noise) in the power spectrum $S(f)$ of the $δ_n$ statistic, whereas integrable ones exibit $1/f^2$ noise (brown noise). These results have been explained on the basis of the random matrix theory and periodic orbit theory. Recently we have analyzed the order to chaos transition in terms of the power spectrum $S(f)$ by using the Robnik billiard (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 94}, 084101 (2005)). We have numerically found a net power law $1/f^α$, with $1\leq α\leq 2$, at all the transition stages. Similar results have been obtained by Santhanam and Bandyopadhyay (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 114101 (2005)) analyzing two coupled quartic oscillators and a quantum kicked top. All these numerical results suggest that the exponent $α$ is related to the chaotic component of the classical phase space of the quantum billiard, but a satisfactory theoretical explanation is still lacking.

Quasi One-Dimensional Bosons in Three-dimensional Traps: From Strong Coupling to Weak Coupling Regime

We analyze a recent experiment on a Tonks-Girardeau gas of $^{87}$Rb atoms (T. Kinoshita, T. Wenger, and D.S. Weiss, Science {\bf 305}, 1125 (2004)). We find that the experimental data are compatible with the one-dimensional theory of Lieb, Seiringer and Yngvason (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 150401 (2003)) but are better described by a theory that takes into account variations in the transverse width of the atomic cloud. By using this theory we investigate also the free axial expansion of the $^{87}$Rb gas in different regimes: Tonks-Girardeau gas, one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate and three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate.

Condensate Fraction of a Fermi Gas in the BCS-BEC Crossover

We investigate the Bose-Einstein condensation of Fermionic pairs in a uniform two-component Fermi gas obtaining an explicit formula for the condensate density as a function of the chemical potential and the energy gap. We analyze the condensate fraction in the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of weakly-interacting Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) of molecular dimers. By using the local density approximation we study confined Fermi vapors of alkali-metal atoms for which there is experimental evidence of condensation also on the BCS side of the Feshbach resonance. Our theoretical results are in agreement with these experimental data and give the behavior of the condensate on both sides of the Feshbach resonance at zero temperature.

Colored Noise in Quantum Chaos

We derive a set of spectral statistics whose power spectrum is characterized, in the case of chaotic quantum systems, by colored noise $1/f^γ$, where the integer parameter $γ$ critically depends on the specific energy-level statistic considered. In the case of regular quantum systems these spectral statistics show $1/f^{γ+1}$ noise.

Dynamics of a BEC bright soliton in an expulsive potential

We theoretically investigate the dynamics of a matter-wave soliton created in a harmonic potential, which is attractive in the transverse direction but expulsive in the longitudinal direction. This Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) bright soliton made of $^7$Li atoms has been observed in a recent experiment (Science {\bf 296}, 1290 (2002)). We show that the non-polynomial Schrödinger equation, an effective one-dimensional equation we derived from the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, is able to reproduce the main experimental features of this BEC soliton in an expulsive potential.

Triaxial Bright Solitons in Bose-Condensed Atomic Vapors

The properties of triaxial bright solitons (TBSs) made of attractive Bose-Einstein condensed atoms under transverse anisotropic harmonic confinement are investigated by using a variational approach. We show that these metastable TBSs change their shape from cigar-like to disc-like by increasing the inter-atomic strength. Moreover, we find that the collective oscillations of a TBS strongly depend on the anisotropy parameter of the external potential. We calculate in detail the properties of TBS close to the collapse, which sets up at a critical value of the inter-atomic strength. This critical strength is maximal in the isotropic (axially symmetric) case and slightly reduces by increasing the anisotropy. Finally, we investigate the formation of multiple TBSs via modulational instability induced by a sudden change of the scattering length from positive to negative.

Formation of multi-solitons and vortex bright solitons in Bose-condensed alkali-metal atoms

Formation of multi-solitons and vortex bright solitons in Bose-condensed alkali-metal atoms is analyzed by using the nonpolynomial Schordinger equation. A train of bright solitons is obtained from an axially homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate by a sudden change of the scattering length from repulsive to attractive. We derive an analytical expression for the number of bright solitons generated by using this mechanism. The formula generalizes a previous formula obtained with the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the second part we consider vortex bright solitons, namely cigar-shaped bright solitons with a nonzero angular quantum number $k$ along the axial direction. By using a variational approach we determine the shape of vortex bright solitons, showing that the critical number of atoms for the collapse of the vortex soliton increases with a larger $k$. Finally we calculate monopole and quadrupole collective oscillations of these vortex bright solitons.

Solitary-waves of the Nonpolynomial Schrodinger Equation: Bright Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Recently we have derived an effective one-dimensional nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE) [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 65}, 043614 (2002)] that accurately describes atomic Bose-Einstein condensates under transverse harmonic confinement. In this paper we analyze the stability of the solitary-wave solutions of NPSE by means of the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. Stable self-focusing solutions of NPSE are precisely the 3D bright solitons experimentally found in Bose-Einstein condensates [Nature {\bf 417}, 150 (2002); Science {\bf 296}, 1290 (2002)]. These self-focusing solutions generalize the ones obtained with the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) and take into account the formation of instabilities in the transverse direction. We prove that neither cubic nor cubic-quintic approximations of NPSE are able to reproduce the unstable branch of the solitary-wave solutions. Moreover, we show that the analitically found critical point of NPSE is in remarkable good agreement with recent numerical computations of 3D GPE. We also discuss the formation of multiple solitons by a sudden change of the sign of the nonlinear strength. This formation can be interpreted in terms of the modulational instability of the time-dependent macroscopic wave function of the Bose condensate. In particular, we derive an accurate analytical formula for the number of multiple bright solitons.

Parametric Resonance Phenomena in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Breaking of Macroscopic Quantum Self-Trapping

We analyze the periodic tunneling of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential which has an oscillating energy barrier. We show that the dynamics of the Bose condensate critically depends on the frequency $ω$ of the oscillating energy barrier. In the regime of periodic macroscopic quantum tunneling (PMQT) with frequency $ω_J$, the population imbalance of the condensate in the two wells can be enhanced under the condition of parametric resonance $ω= 2 ω_J$. Instead, in the regime of macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST), we find that MQST can be reduced or suppressed under the condition of parametric resonance between the frequency $ω$ of the energy barrier and the frequency $ω_{ST}$ of oscillation through the barrier of the very small fraction of particles which remain untrapped during MQST.

3D BEC Bright Solitons under Transverse Confinement: Analytical Results with the Nonpolynomial Schrodinger Equation

The Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of a dilute gas of bosons is well described by the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (3D GPE), that is a nonlinear Schrodinger equation. By imposing a transverse confinement the BEC can travel only in the cylindrical axial direction. We show that in this case the BEC with attractive interaction admits a 3D bright soliton solution which generalizes the text-book one, that is valid in the one-dimensional limit (1D GPE). Contrary to the 1D case, the 3D bright soliton exists only below a critical number of Bosons that depends on the extent of confinement. Finally, we find that the 3D bright soliton collapses if its density excedes a critical value. Our results are obtained by using a nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation (NPSE), an effective one-dimensional equation derived from the 3D GPE.

Parametric Resonance Phenomena in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Enhanced Quantum Tunneling of Coherent Matter Pulses

We investigate the quantum tunneling of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a optical trap. We show that periodic pulses of coherent matter are emitted from the trap by using an oscillating energy barrier. Moreover, the emitted fraction of condensed atoms strongly increases if the period of oscillation of the height of the energy barrier is in parametric resonance with the period of oscillation of the center of mass of the condensate inside the potential well. Our model is analyzed by numerically solving the nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation (NPSE), an effective one-dimensional equation which describes the macroscopic wavefunction of Bose condensates under transverse harmonic confinement. The range of validity of NPSE is discussed and compared with that of Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Particles and Anti-Particles in a Relativistic Bose Condensate

We study the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) for a relativistic ideal gas of bosons. In the framework of canonical thermal field theory, we analyze the role of particles and anti-particles in the determination of BEC transition temperature. At the BEC transition point we obtain two universal curves, i.e. valid for any mass value: the scaled critical temperature as a function of the scaled charge density of the Bose system, and the density ratio of anti-particles versus the scaled critical temperature. Moreover, we numerically investigate charge densities and condensed fraction ranging from the non-relativistic to the ultra-relativistic temperature, where analytical results are obtained.
