Gapped commensurate antiferromagnetic response in a strongly underdoped model cuprate superconductor

It is a distinct possibility that spin fluctuations are the pairing interactions in a wide range of unconventional superconductors. In the case of the high-transition-temperature (high-$T_c$) cuprates, in which superconductivity emerges upon doping an antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating state, spin correlations might furthermore drive unusual pseudogap phenomena. Here we use polarized and unpolarized magnetic neutron scattering to study the simple tetragonal cuprate $\mathrm{HgBa}_{2}\mathrm{CuO}_{4+δ}$ at very low doping ($T_c \approx 55$ K, hole concentration $p \approx 0.064$). In stark contrast to prior results for other underdoped cuprates, we find no evidence of incommensurate spin-density-wave, charge-spin stripe, or $q = 0$ magnetic order. Instead, the antiferromagnetic response in both the superconducting and pseudogap states is gapped below $Δ_\mathrm{AF} \approx 6$ meV, commensurate over a wide energy range, and disperses above about 55 meV. Given the documented model nature of $\mathrm{HgBa}_{2}\mathrm{CuO}_{4+δ}$, which exhibits high structural symmetry and minimal point disorder effects, we conclude that the observed behavior signifies the unmasked response of the quintessential $\mathrm{CuO}_{2}$ planes near the Mott-insulating state. These results for $\mathrm{HgBa}_{2}\mathrm{CuO}_{4+δ}$ can therefore be expected to serve as a benchmark for a refined theoretical understanding of the cuprates.

Magnetic diffuse scattering of the $S$ = 5/2 fcc antiferromagnets Ba$_2$MnTeO$_6$ and Ba$_2$MnWO$_6$

We have investigated the magnetic diffuse scattering of isostructural $S$ = 5/2 fcc antiferromagnets Ba$_2$MnTeO$_6$ and Ba$_2$MnWO$_6$ using polarized neutrons. Both materials display short-range correlated magnetism above their respective magnetic ordering temperatures of 20 K and 8 K. The spin correlations were analysed using a Reverse Monte Carlo approach. For Ba$_2$MnTeO$_6$, we find antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor correlations along with ferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor correlations directly linked to the Type I order below $T_N$. For Ba$_2$MnWO$_6$, both the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor spin correlations are antiferromagnetic in the paramagnetic state. The short-range spin correlations persist up to $T$ = 7$T_N$. The magnetic diffuse scattering was also fitted using Onsager reaction-field theory allowing us to evaluate the magnetic interactions in these materials. We obtained $J_1$ = -3.25(3) K and $J_2$ = 0.41(2) K for Ba$_2$MnTeO$_6$ and $J_1$ = -1.08(1) K and $J_2$ = -0.88(1) K for Ba$_2$MnWO$_6$. These interactions are comparable to previous results from inelastic neutron scattering experiments below $T_N$, which highlights the potential of the Onsager approach for the analysis of magnetic interactions.

Revisiting spin ice physics in the ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlore Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$

Pyrochlore materials are characterized by their hallmark network of corner-sharing rare-earth tetrahedra, which can produce a wide array of complex magnetic ground states. Ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlores often obey the "two-in-two-out" spin ice rules, which can lead to a highly-degenerate spin structure. Large moment systems, such as Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, tend to host a classical spin ice state with low-temperature spin freezing and emergent magnetic monopoles. Systems with smaller effective moments, such as Pr$^{3+}$-based pyrochlores, have been proposed as excellent candidates for hosting a "quantum spin ice" characterized by entanglement and a slew of exotic quasiparticle excitations. However, experimental evidence for a quantum spin ice state has remained elusive. Here, we show that the low-temperature magnetic properties of Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ satisfy several important criteria for continued consideration as a quantum spin ice. We find that Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ exhibits a partially spin-frozen ground state with a large volume fraction of dynamic magnetism. Our comprehensive bulk characterization and neutron scattering measurements enable us to map out the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram, producing results consistent with expectations for a ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlore. We identify key hallmarks of spin ice physics, and show that the application of small magnetic fields ($μ_0 H_c \sim$0.75T) suppresses the spin ice state and induces a long-range ordered magnetic structure. Together, our work clarifies the current state of Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ and encourages future studies aimed at exploring the potential for a quantum spin ice ground state in this system.

Structure, spin correlations and magnetism of the $S = 1/2$ square-lattice antiferromagnet Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ ($0 \leq x \leq 1$)

Quantum spin liquids are highly entangled magnetic states with exotic properties. The $S = 1/2$ square-lattice Heisenberg model is one of the foundational models in frustrated magnetism with a predicted, but never observed, quantum spin liquid state. Isostructural double perovskites Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$ are physical realizations of this model, but have distinctly different types magnetic order and interactions due to a $d^{10}/d^0$ effect. Long-range magnetic order is suppressed in the solid solution Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ in a wide region of $x = 0.05-0.6$, where the ground state has been proposed to be a disorder-induced spin liquid. Here we show that the spin-liquid-like $x = 0.2$ and $x = 0.5$ samples have distinctly different local spin correlations, which suggests they have different ground states. Furthermore, the previously ignored interlayer coupling between the square-planes is likely to play a role in the suppression of magnetic order on the W-rich side at $x \approx 0.6$. These results highlight the complex magnetism of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ and hint at a new quantum critical point at $x \approx 0.3$.

Hidden Magnetic Texture in the Pseudogap Phase of High-Tc $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.6}$

Despite decades of intense researches, the enigmatic pseudo-gap (PG) phase of superconducting cuprates remains an unsolved mystery. In the last 15 years, various symmetry breakings in the PG state have been discovered, spanning an intra-unit cell (IUC) magnetism, preserving the lattice translational (LT) symmetry but breaking time-reversal symmetry and parity, and an additional incipient charge density wave breaking the LT symmetry upon cooling. However, none of these states can (alone) account for the partial gapping of the Fermi surface. Here we report a hidden LT-breaking magnetism uisng polarized neutron diffraction. Our measurements reveal magnetic correlations, in two different underdoped $\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.6}$ single crystals, that settle at the PG onset temperature with i) a planar propagation wave vector $(π,0) \equiv (0,π)$, yielding a doubling or quadrupling of the magnetic unit cell and ii) magnetic moments mainly pointing perpendicular to the $CuO_{2}$ layers. The LT-breaking magnetism is at short range suggesting the formation of clusters of 5-6 unit cells. Together with the previously reported IUC magnetism, it yields a hidden magnetic texture of the $CuO_{2}$ unit cells hosting loop currents, forming large supercells which may be crucial for elucidating the PG puzzle.

Randomness and Frustration in a S = 1/2 Square-Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We explore the interplay between randomness and magnetic frustration in the series of $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg square-lattice compounds Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$. Substituting W for Te alters the magnetic interactions dramatically, from strongly nearest-neighbor to next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling. We perform neutron scattering measurements to probe the magnetic ground state and excitations over a range of $x$. We propose a bond-disorder model that reproduces ground states with only short-ranged spin correlations in the mixed compounds. The calculated neutron diffraction patterns and powder spectra agree well with the measured data and allow detailed predictions for future measurements. We conclude that quenched randomness plays the major role in defining the physics of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ with frustration being less significant.

Emergent magnetic behaviour in the frustrated Yb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ garnet

We report neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and Monte Carlo theoretical analysis to verify the short range nature of the magnetic structure and spin-spin correlations in a Yb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ single crystal. The quantum spin state of Yb$^{3+}$ in Yb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ is verified. The quantum spins organise into a short ranged emergent director state for T $<$ 0.4 K derived from anisotropy and near neighbour exchange. We derive the magnitude of the near neighbour exchange interactions $0.6\; {\rm K} < J_1 < 0.7\; {\rm K}, J_2 = 0.12$~K and the magnitude of the dipolar exchange interaction, $D$, in the range $0.18 < D < 0.21$ K. Certain aspects of the broad experimental dataset can be modelled using a $J_1D$ model with ferromagnetic near neighbour spin-spin correlations while other aspects of the data can be accurately reproduced using a $J_1J_2D$ model with antiferromagnetic near neighbour spin-spin correlation. As such, although we do not quantify all the relevant exchange interactions we nevertheless provide a strong basis for the understanding of the complex Hamiltonian required to fully describe the magnetic state of Yb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$.

Loop Currents in Two-leg Ladder Cuprates

New phases with broken discrete Ising symmetries are uncovered in quantum materials with strong electronic correlations. The two-leg ladder cuprate \textbf{$Sr_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}$} hosts a very rich phase diagram where, upon hole doping, the system exhibits a spin liquid state ending to an intriguing ordered magnetic state at larger $Ca$ content. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we report here the existence of short range magnetism in this material for two $Ca$ contents, whose origin cannot be ascribed to Cu spins. This magnetism develops exclusively within the two-leg ladders with a diffraction pattern at forbidden Bragg scattering which is the hallmark of loop current-like magnetism breaking both time-reversal and parity symmetries. Our discovery shows local discrete symmetry breaking in a one dimensional spin liquid system as theoretically predicted. It further suggests that a loop current-like phase could trigger the long range magnetic order reported at larger doping in two-leg ladder cuprates.

Dipolar Spin Ice Under Uniaxial Pressure

The magnetically frustrated spin ice family of materials is host to numerous exotic phenomena such as magnetic monopole excitations and macroscopic residual entropy extending to low temperature. A finite-temperature ordering transition in the absence of applied fields has not been experimentally observed in the classical spin ice materials Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7. Such a transition could be induced by the application of pressure, and in this work we consider the effects of uniaxial pressure on classical spin ice systems. Theoretically we find that the pressure induced ordering transition in Dy2Ti2O7 is strongly affected by the dipolar interaction. We also report measurements on the neutron structure factor of Ho2Ti2O7 under pressure, and compare the experimental results to the predictions of our theoretical model.

Evidence for Intra-Unit Cell Magnetism in Superconducting Cuprates: a Technical Assessment

Intra unit cell (IUC) magnetic order observed by polarized neutron diffraction (PND) is one of the hallmarks of the pseudogap state of high-temperature copper oxide superconductors. This experimental observation, usually interpreted as a result of loop currents, has been recently challenged based on lower statistics data. We here address the crucial issue of polarization inhomogeneities in the neutron beams showing that the original data had a much better reproducibilty. Within these technical limitations, we here propose a self-consistent analysis that potentially solves the controversy. We show that all the reported PND experiments in superconducting cuprates are actually compatible with the existence of an IUC magnetism.

Orientation of the intra-unit-cell magnetic moment in the high-Tc superconductor HgBa2CuO$_{4+δ}$

Polarized-neutron diffraction experiments (PND) have revealed that the pseudogap state of the cuprates exhibits unusual intra-unit-cell (IUC) magnetism. At a qualitative level, the data indicate a moment direction that is neither perpendicular nor parallel to the CuO2 layers, yet an accurate measurement of a structurally simple compound has been lacking. Here we report PND results with unprecedented accuracy for the IUC magnetic order in the simple-tetragonal single-CuO$_2$-layer compound HgBa2CuO$_{4+δ}$. At the transition temperature, we find evidence for magnetic critical scattering. Deep in the ordered state, we determine the moment direction to be 70° $\pm$ 10° away from the normal to the CuO$_2$ layers, which rules out both purely planar loop currents and high-symmetry Dirac multipoles, the two most prominent theoretical proposals for the microscopic origin of the IUC magnetism. However, the data are consistent with Dirac multipoles of lower symmetry or, alternatively, with a particular configuration of loop currents that flow on the faces of the CuO$_6$ octahedra.

a-b anisotropy of the intra-unit-cell magnetic order in $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}$

Within the complex phase diagram of the hole-doped cuprates, seizing the nature of the mysterious pseudo-gap phase is essential to unravel the microscopic origin of high-temperature superconductivity. Below the pseudo-gap temperature $\rm T^{\star}$, evidences for intra-unit-cell orders breaking the 4-fold rotation symmetry have been provided by neutron diffraction and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Using polarized neutron diffraction on a detwinned $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}$ sample, we here report a distinct a-b anisotropy of the intra-unit-cell magnetic structure factor below $\rm T^{\star}$, highlighting that intra-unit-cell order in this material breaks the mirror symmetry of the CuO$_2$ bilayers. This is likely to originate from a crisscrossed arrangement of loop currents within the $\rm CuO_2$ bilayer, resulting in a bilayer mean toroidal axis along the $\rm {\bf b}$ direction.
