Non-exponential Sanov and Schilder theorems on Wiener space: BSDEs, Schrödinger problems and Control

We derive new limit theorems for Brownian motion, which can be seen as non-exponential analogues of the large deviation theorems of Sanov and Schilder in their Laplace principle forms. As a first application, we obtain novel scaling limits of backward stochastic differential equations and their related partial differential equations. As a second application, we extend prior results on the small-noise limit of the Schrödinger problem as an optimal transport cost, unifying the control-theoretic and probabilistic approaches initiated respectively by T. Mikami and C. Léonard. Lastly, our results suggest a new scheme for the computation of mean field optimal control problems, distinct from the conventional particle approximation. A key ingredient in our analysis is an extension of the classical variational formula (often attributed to Borell or Boué-Dupuis) for the Laplace transform of Wiener measure.

Concentration of dynamic risk measures in a Brownian filtration

Motivated by liquidity risk in mathematical finance, D. Lacker introduced concentration inequalities for risk measures, i.e. upper bounds on the \emph{liquidity risk profile} of a financial loss. We derive these inequalities in the case of time-consistent dynamic risk measures when the filtration is assumed to carry a Brownian motion. The theory of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) and their dual formulation plays a crucial role in our analysis. Natural by-products of concentration of risk measures are a description of the tail behavior of the financial loss and transport-type inequalities in terms of the generator of the BSDE, which in the present case can grow arbitrarily fast.

On the dynamic representation of some time-inconsistent risk measures in a Brownian filtration

It is well-known from the work of Kupper and Schachermayer that most law-invariant risk measures do not admit a time-consistent representation. In this work we show that in a Brownian filtration the "Optimized Certainty Equivalent" risk measures of Ben-Tal and Teboulle can be computed through PDE techniques, i.e. dynamically. This can be seen as a substitute of sorts whenever they lack time consistency, and covers the cases of conditional value-at-risk and monotone mean-variance. Our method consists of focusing on the convex dual representation, which suggests extending the state space. With this we can obtain a dynamic programming principle and use stochastic control techniques, along with the theory of viscosity solutions, which we must adapt to cover the present singular situation.

The amazing power of dimensional analysis: Quantifying market impact

This note complements the inspiring work on dimensional analysis and market microstructure by Kyle and Obizhaeva [18]. Following closely these authors, our main result shows by a similar argument as usually applied in physics the following remarkable fact. If the market impact of a meta-order only depends on four well-defined and financially meaningful variables, then -- up to a constant -- there is only one possible form of this dependence. In particular, the market impact is proportional to the square-root of the size of the meta-order. This theorem can be regarded as a special case of a more general result of Kyle and Obizhaeva. These authors consider five variables which might have an influence on the size of the market impact. In this case one finds a richer variety of possible functional relations which we precisely characterize. We also discuss the analogies to classical arguments from physics, such as the period of a pendulum.

Duality formulas for robust pricing and hedging in discrete time

In this paper we derive robust super- and subhedging dualities for contingent claims that can depend on several underlying assets. In addition to strict super- and subhedging, we also consider relaxed versions which, instead of eliminating the shortfall risk completely, aim to reduce it to an acceptable level. This yields robust price bounds with tighter spreads. As examples we study strict super- and subhedging with general convex transaction costs and trading constraints as well as risk-based hedging with respect to robust versions of the average value at risk and entropic risk measure. Our approach is based on representation results for increasing convex functionals and allows for general financial market structures. As a side result it yields a robust version of the fundamental theorem of asset pricing.

Multidimensional Markov FBSDEs with superquadratic growth

We give local and global existence and uniqueness results for systems of coupled FBSDEs in the multidimensional setting and with generators allowed to grow arbitrarily fast in the control variable. Our results are based on Malliavin calculus arguments and pasting techniques.

Duality for increasing convex functionals with countably many marginal constraints

In this work we derive a convex dual representation for increasing convex functionals on a space of real-valued Borel measurable functions defined on a countable product of metric spaces. Our main assumption is that the functionals fulfill marginal constraints satisfying a certain tightness condition. In the special case where the marginal constraints are given by expectations or maxima of expectations, we obtain linear and sublinear versions of Kantorovich's transport duality and the recently discovered martingale transport duality on products of countably many metric spaces.

Minimal Supersolutions of Convex BSDEs under Constraints

We study supersolutions of a backward stochastic differential equation, the control processes of which are constrained to be continuous semimartingales of the form $dZ = Δdt + ΓdW$. The generator may depend on the decomposition $(Δ,Γ)$ and is assumed to be positive, jointly convex and lower semicontinuous, and to satisfy a superquadratic growth condition in $Δ$ and $Γ$. We prove the existence of a supersolution that is minimal at time zero and derive stability properties of the non-linear operator that maps terminal conditions to the time zero value of this minimal supersolution such as monotone convergence, Fatou's lemma and $L^1$-lower semicontinuity. Furthermore, we provide duality results within the present framework and thereby give conditions for the existence of solutions under constraints.

BSDEs on finite and infinite horizon with time-delayed generators

We consider a backward stochastic differential equation with a generator that can be subjected to delay, in the sense that its current value depends on the weighted past values of the solutions, for instance a distorted recent average. Existence and uniqueness results are provided in the case of possibly infinite time horizon for equations with, and without reflection. Furthermore, we show that when the delay vanishes, the solutions of the delayed equations converge to the solution of the equation without delay. We argue that these equations are naturally linked to forward backward systems, and we exemplify a situation where this observation allows to derive results for quadratic delayed equations with non-bounded terminal conditions in multi-dimension.

Portfolio Optimization under Nonlinear Utility

This paper studies the utility maximization problem of an agent with non-trivial endowment, and whose preferences are modeled by the maximal subsolution of a BSDE. We prove existence of an optimal trading strategy and relate our existence result to the existence of a maximal subsolution to a controlled decoupled FBSDE. Using BSDE duality, we show that the utility maximization problem can be seen as a robust control problem admitting a saddle point if the generator of the BSDE additionally satisfies a specific growth condition. We show by convex duality that any saddle point of the robust control problem agrees with a primal and a dual optimizer of the utility maximization problem, and can be characterized in terms of a BSDE solution.

Dual Representation of Minimal Supersolutions of Convex BSDEs

We give a dual representation of minimal supersolutions of BSDEs with non-bounded, but integrable terminal conditions and under weak requirements on the generator which is allowed to depend on the value process of the equation. Conversely, we show that any dynamic risk measure satisfying such a dual representation stems from a BSDE. We also give a condition under which a supersolution of a BSDE is even a solution.
