A Customized 3D GPU Poisson Solver for Free Boundary Conditions

A 3-dimensional GPU Poisson solver is developed for all possible combinations of free and periodic boundary conditions (BCs) along the three directions. It is benchmarked for various grid sizes and different BCs and a significant performance gain is observed for problems including one or more free BCs. The GPU Poisson solver is also benchmarked against two different CPU implementations of the same method and a significant amount of acceleration of the computation is observed with the GPU version.

Selecting Boron Fullerenes by Cage-Doping Mechanisms

So far, no boron fullerenes were synthesized: more compact sp3-bonded clusters are energetically preferred. To circumvent this, metallic clusters have been suggested by Pochet et al. [Phys. Rev. B 83, 081403(R) (2011)] as "seeds" for a possible synthesis which would topologically protect the sp2 sector of the configuration space. In this paper, we identify a basic pentagonal unit which allows a balance between the release of strain and the self-doping rule. We formulate a guiding principle for the stability of boron fullerenes, which takes the form of an isolated filled pentagon rule (IFPR). The role of metallic clusters is then reexamined. It is shown that the interplay of the IFPR and the seed-induced doping breaks polymorphism and its related problems: it can effectively select between different isomers and reduce the reactivity of the boron shells. The balance between self and exterior doping represents the best strategy for boron buckyball synthesis.

Tunable magnetic states in h-BN sheets

Magnetism in 2D atomic sheets has attracted considerable interest as its existence could allow the development of electronic and spintronic devices. The existence of magnetism is not sufficient for devices, however, as states must be addressable and modifiable through the application of an external drive. We show that defects in hexagonal boron nitride present a strong interplay between the the N-N distance in the edge and the magnetic moments of the defects. By stress-induced geometry modifications, we change the ground state magnetic moment of the defects. This control is made possible by the triangular shape of the defects as well as the strong spin localisation in the magnetic state.

Efficient and accurate solver of the three-dimensional screened and unscreened Poisson's equation with generic boundary conditions

We present an explicit solver of the three-dimensional screened and unscreened Poisson's equation which combines accuracy, computational efficiency and versatility. The solver, based on a mixed plane-wave / interpolating scaling function representation, can deal with any kind of periodicity (along one, two, or three spatial axes) as well as with fully isolated boundary conditions. It can seamlessly accommodate a finite screening length, non-orthorhombic lattices and charged systems. This approach is particularly advantageous because convergence is attained by simply refining the real space grid, namely without any adjustable parameter. At the same time, the numerical method features O(N log N) scaling of the computational cost (N being the number of grid points) very much like plane-wave methods. The methodology, validated on model systems, is tailored for leading-edge computer simulations of materials (including ab initio electronic structure computations), but it might as well be beneficial for other research domains.

Wavelets for Density-Functional Theory and Post-Density-Functional-Theory Calculations

We give a fairly comprehensive review of wavelets and of their application to density-functional theory (DFT) and to our recent application of a wavelet-based version of linear-response time-dependent DFT (LR-TD-DFT). Our intended audience is quantum chemists and theoretical solid-state and chemical physicists. Wavelets are a Fourier-transform-like approach which developed primarily in the latter half of the last century and which was rapidly adapted by engineers in the 1990s because of its advantages compared to standard Fourier transform techniques for multiresolution problems with complicated boundary conditions. High performance computing wavelet codes now also exist for DFT applications in quantum chemistry and solid-state physics, notably the BigDFT code described in this chapter. After briefly describing the basic equations of DFT and LR-TD-DFT, we discuss how they are solved in BigDFT and present new results on the small test molecule carbon monoxide to show how BigDFT results compare against those obtained with the quantum chemistry gaussian-type orbital (GTO) based code deMon2k. In general, the two programs give essentially the same orbital energies, but the wavelet basis of BigDFT converges to the basis set limit much more rapidly than does the GTO basis set of deMon2k. Wavelet-based LR-TD-DFT is still in its infancy, but our calculations confirm the feasibility of implementing LR-TD-DFT in a wavelet-based code.

Wavelet-Based Linear-Response Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory

Linear-response time-dependent (TD) density-functional theory (DFT) has been implemented in the pseudopotential wavelet-based electronic structure program BigDFT and results are compared against those obtained with the all-electron Gaussian-type orbital program deMon2k for the calculation of electronic absorption spectra of N2 using the TD local density approximation (LDA). The two programs give comparable excitation energies and absorption spectra once suitably extensive basis sets are used. Convergence of LDA density orbitals and orbital energies to the basis-set limit is significantly faster for BigDFT than for deMon2k. However the number of virtual orbitals used in TD-DFT calculations is a parameter in BigDFT, while all virtual orbitals are included in TD-DFT calculations in deMon2k. As a reality check, we report the x-ray crystal structure and the measured and calculated absorption spectrum (excitation energies and oscillator strengths) of the small organic molecule N-cyclohexyl-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-3-amine.

The effect of ionization on the global minima of small and medium sized silicon and magnesium clusters

We re-examine the question of whether the geometrical ground state of neutral and ionized clusters are identical. Using a well defined criterion for being "identical" together, the extensive sampling methods on a potential energy surface calculated by density functional theory, we show that the ground states are in general different. This behavior is to be expected whenever there are metastable configurations which are close in energy to the ground state, but it disagrees with previous studies.

The energy landscape of fullerene materials: a comparison between boron, boron-nitride and carbon

Using the minima hopping global geometry optimization method on the density functional potential energy surface we study medium size and large boron clusters. Even though for isolated medium size clusters the ground state is a cage like structure they are unstable against external perturbations such as contact with other clusters. The energy landscape of larger boron clusters is glass like and has a large number of structures which are lower in energy than the cages. This is in contrast to carbon and boron nitride systems which can be clearly identified as structure seekers in our minima hopping runs. The differences in the potential energy landscape explain why carbon and boron nitride systems are found in nature whereas pure boron fullerenes have not been found.

Structural Metastability of Endohedral Silicon Fullerenes

Endohedrally doped Si20 fullerenes appear as appealing building blocks for nanoscale materials. We investigate their structural stability with an unbiased and systematic global geometry optimization method within density-functional theory. For a wide range of metal doping atoms, it was sufficient to explore the Born Oppenheimer surface for only a moderate number of local minima to find structures that clearly differ from the initial endohedral cages, but are considerably more favorable in terms of energy. Previously proposed structures are thus all metastable.

The energy landscape of silicon systems and its description by force fields, tight binding schemes, density functional methods and Quantum Monte Carlo methods

The accuracy of the energy landscape of silicon systems obtained from various density functional methods, a tight binding scheme and force fields is studied. Quantum Monte Carlo results serve as quasi exact reference values. In addition to the well known accuracy of DFT methods for geometric ground states and metastable configurations we find that DFT methods give a similar accuracy for transition states and thus a good overall description of the energy landscape. On the other hand, force fields give a very poor description of the landscape that are in most cases too rugged and contain many fake local minima and saddle points or ones that have the wrong height.

Density Functional Theory calculation on many-cores hybrid CPU-GPU architectures

The implementation of a full electronic structure calculation code on a hybrid parallel architecture with Graphic Processing Units (GPU) is presented. The code which is on the basis of our implementation is a GNU-GPL code based on Daubechies wavelets. It shows very good performances, systematic convergence properties and an excellent efficiency on parallel computers. Our GPU-based acceleration fully preserves all these properties. In particular, the code is able to run on many cores which may or may not have a GPU associated. It is thus able to run on parallel and massive parallel hybrid environment, also with a non-homogeneous ratio CPU/GPU. With double precision calculations, we may achieve considerable speedup, between a factor of 20 for some operations and a factor of 6 for the whole DFT code.

Structural stability of the $B_{80}$ fullerene against defect formation

Using a systematic search algorithm we identify several types of point defects in the boron fullerene with 80 atoms. All these point defect leave the cage structure intact. In addition the cage structure is also very stable with respect to elastic deformations and addition or removal of atoms.

Daubechies wavelets as a basis set for density functional pseudopotential calculations

Daubechies wavelets are a powerful systematic basis set for electronic structure calculations because they are orthogonal and localized both in real and Fourier space. We describe in detail how this basis set can be used to obtain a highly efficient and accurate method for density functional electronic structure calculations. An implementation of this method is available in the ABINIT free software package. This code shows high systematic convergence properties, very good performances and an excellent efficiency for parallel calculations.

Efficient and accurate three dimensional Poisson solver for surface problems

We present a method that gives highly accurate electrostatic potentials for systems where we have periodic boundary conditions in two spatial directions but free boundary conditions in the third direction. These boundary conditions are needed for all kind of surface problems. Our method has an O(N log N) computational cost, where N is the number of grid points, with a very small prefactor. This Poisson solver is primarily intended for real space methods where the charge density and the potential are given on a uniform grid.

Efficient solution of Poisson's equation with free boundary conditions

Interpolating scaling functions give a faithful representation of a localized charge distribution by its values on a grid. For such charge distributions, using a Fast Fourier method, we obtain highly accurate electrostatic potentials for free boundary conditions at the cost of O(N log N) operations, where N is the number of grid points. Thus, with our approach, free boundary conditions are treated as efficiently as the periodic conditions via plane wave methods.

Quantum Non-Locality in Systems with Open Boundaries: Failure of the Wigner-Function Formalism

We shall revisit the conventional treatment of open quantum devices based on the Wigner-Function formalism. Our analysis will show that the artificial spatial separation between device active region and external reservoirs -properly defined within a semiclassical simulation scheme- is intrinsically incompatible with the non-local character of quantum mechanics. More specifically, by means of an exactly-solvable semiconductor model, we shall show that the application of the conventional boundary-condition scheme to the Wigner transport equation may produce highly non-physical results, like thermal injection of coherent state superpositions and boundary-driven negative probability distributions.

A wide class of four point functions of BPS operators in N=4 SYM at order g^4

The calculation of a large family of four point functions of general BPS operators in N=4 SYM is reduced to the evaluation of colour contractions. For 1/2 BPS operators O_Δthe explicit results at order g^4 for the function < O_n O_2 O_n O_2 > are given up to n=6. The OPE of the general result is performed up to the second order in the short distance expansion parameter. Two examples are given, in which the mixing of the operators in the intermediate channel can be resolved using four point functions computed by this method.

Rationality of the Anomalous Dimensions in N=4 SYM theory

We reconsider the general constraints on the perturbative anomalous dimensions in conformal invariant QFT and in particular in N=4 SYM with gauge group SU(N_c). We show that all the perturbative corrections to the anomalous dimension of a renormalized gauge invariant local operator can be written as polynomials in its one loop anomalous dimension. In the N=4 SYM theory the coefficients of these polynomials are rational functions of the number of colours N_c.
