\'Etude on the Delta-unknotting number

We derive an almost sharp lower bound on the Casson invariant of positive braid knots. As a consequence, we show that the $\Delta$-unknotting number is quasi-additive on the set of positive and negative braids on a fixed number of strands.

The Conway knot has infinite concordance order

We examine how the Rasmussen invariant, satellite operations, and null-homologous twists can be used to establish infinite order of knots in the smooth concordance group. As an application, we show that the Conway knot has infinite concordance order.

Signs of knot polynomial evaluations from a topological perspective

We prove that for knots, the evaluation of the Jones polynomial at the sixth root of unity, as well as the evaluation of the $Q$-polynomial at the reciprocal of the golden ratio, are uniquely determined by the oriented homeomorphism type of the double branched covering. We provide explicit formulae for these evaluations in terms of the linking pairing. The proof proceeds via so-called singular determinants, from which we also extract new lower bounds for the unknotting numbers of knots and links.

Monodromies of surfaces in 3-manifolds, right-veeringness, and primeness of links

Extending the notion of monodromies associated with open books of $3$-manifolds, we consider monodromies for all incompressible surfaces in $3$-manifolds as partial self-maps of the arc set of the surfaces. We use them to develop a primeness criterion for incompressible surfaces constructed as iterative Murasugi sums in irreducible $3$-manifolds. We also consider a suitable notion of right-veeringness for monodromies of incompressible surfaces. We show strongly quasipositive surfaces are right-veering, thereby generalizing the corresponding result for open books and providing a proof that does not draw on contact geometry. In fact, we characterize when all elements of a family of incompressible surfaces that is closed under positive stabilization are right-veering. The latter also offers a new perspective on the characterization of tight contact structures via right-veeringness as first established by Honda, Kazez, and Mati\'c. As an application to links in $S^3$, we prove visual primeness of a large class of links, the so-called alternative links. This subsumes all prior visual primeness results related to Cromwell's conjecture. The application is enabled by the fact that all links in $S^3$ arise as the boundary of incompressible surfaces, whereas classical open book theory is restricted to fibered links -- those links that arise as the boundary of the page of an open book.

Khovanov homology and refined bounds for Gordian distances

From Khovanov homology, we extract a new lower bound for the Gordian distance of knots, which combines and strengthens the previously existing bounds coming from Rasmussen invariants and from torsion invariants. We also improve the bounds for the proper rational Gordian distance.

Homogeneous braids are visually prime

We show that closures of homogeneous braids are visually prime, addressing a question of Cromwell. The key technical tool for the proof is the following criterion concerning primeness of open books, which we consider to be of independent interest. For open books of 3-manifolds the property of having no fixed essential arcs is preserved under essential Murasugi sums with a strictly right-veering open book, if the plumbing region of the original open book veers to the left. We also provide examples of open books in S^3 demonstrating that primeness is not necessarily preserved under essential Murasugi sum, in fact not even under stabilizations a.k.a. Hopf plumbings. Furthermore, we find that trefoil plumbings need not preserve primeness. In contrast, we establish that figure-eight knot plumbings do preserve primeness.

Minimal cobordisms between thin and thick torus knots

We determine the locally flat cobordism distance between torus knots with small and large braid index, up to high precision. Here small means 2, 3, 4, or 6. As an application, we derive a surprising fact about torus knots that appear as cross-sections of almost minimal cobordisms between two-stranded torus knots and the trivial knot.

3-braid knots with maximal 4-genus

We classify 3-braid knots whose topological 4-genus coincides with their Seifert genus, using McCoy's twisting method and the Xu normal form. In addition, we give upper bounds for the topological 4-genus of positive and strongly quasipositive 3-braid knots.

The second coefficient of the Alexander polynomial as a satellite obstruction

A set L of links is introduced, containing positive braid links as well as arborescent positive Hopf plumbings. It is shown that for links in P, the leading and the second coefficient of the Alexander polynomial have opposite sign. It follows that certain satellite links, such as (n,1)-cables, are not in P.

A new concordance homomorphism from Khovanov homology

The universal Khovanov chain complex of a knot modulo an appropriate equivalence relation is shown to yield a homomorphism on the smooth concordance group, which is strictly stronger than all Rasmussen invariants over fields of different characteristics combined.

On unknotting fibered positive knots and braids

The unknotting number $u$ and the genus $g$ of braid positive knots are equal, as shown by Rudolph. We prove the stronger statement that any positive braid diagram of a genus $g$ knot contains $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. Then, we turn to unknotting the more general class of fibered positive knots, for which $u = g$ was conjectured by Stoimenow. We prove that the known ways to unknot braid positive knots do not generalize to fibered positive knots. Namely, we prove that there are fibered positive knots that cannot be unknotted optimally along fibered positive knots; there are fibered positive knots that do not arise as trefoil plumbings; and there are positive diagrams of fibered positive knots of genus $g$ that do not contain $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. In fact, we conjecture that one of our examples is a counterexample to Stoimenow's conjecture.

On calculating the slice genera of 11- and 12-crossing knots

This paper contains the results of efforts to determine values of the smooth and the topological slice genus of 11- and 12-crossing knots. Upper bounds for these genera were produced by using a computer to search for genus one concordances between knots. For the topological slice genus further upper bounds were produced using the algebraic genus. Lower bounds were obtained using a new obstruction from the Seifert form and by use of Donaldson's diagonalization theorem. These results complete the computation of the topological slice genera for all knots with at most 11 crossings and leaves the smooth genera unknown for only two 11-crossing knots. For 12 crossings there remain merely 25 knots whose smooth or topological slice genus is unknown.

Rasmussen invariants of Whitehead doubles and other satellites

We prove formulae for the $\mathbb{F}_2$-Rasmussen invariant of satellite knots of patterns with wrapping number 2, using the multicurve technology for Khovanov and Bar-Natan homology developed by Kotelskiy, Watson, and the second author. A new concordance homomorphism, which is independent of the Rasmussen invariant, plays a central role in these formulae. We also explore whether similar formulae hold for the Ozsv\'ath-Szab\'o invariant $\tau$.

Quasipositivity and braid index of pretzel knots

This short note is about three-stranded pretzel knots that have an even number of crossings in one of the strands. We calculate the braid index of such knots and determine which of them are quasipositive. The main tools are the Morton-Franks-Williams inequalities, and Khovanov-Rozansky concordance homomorphisms.

On the values taken by slice torus invariants

We study the space of slice-torus invariants. In particular we characterize the set of values that slice-torus invariants may take on a given knot in terms of the stable smooth slice genus. Our study reveals that the resolution of the local Thom conjecture implies the existence of slice torus invariants without having to appeal to any explicit construction from a knot homology theory.

Squeezed Knots

Squeezed knots are those knots that appear as slices of genus-minimizing oriented smooth cobordisms between positive and negative torus knots. We show that this class of knots is large and discuss how to obstruct squeezedness. The most effective obstructions appear to come from quantum knot invariants, notably including refinements of the Rasmussen invariant due to Lipshitz-Sarkar and Sarkar-Scaduto-Stoffregen involving stable cohomology operations on Khovanov homology.

Almost positive links are strongly quasipositive

We prove that any link admitting a diagram with a single negative crossing is strongly quasipositive. This answers a question of Stoimenow's in the (strong) positive. As a second main result, we give simple and complete characterizations of link diagrams with quasipositive canonical surface (the surface produced by Seifert's algorithm). As applications, we determine which prime knots up to 13 crossings are strongly quasipositive, and we confirm the following conjecture for knots that have a canonical surface realizing their genus: a knot is strongly quasipositive if and only if the Bennequin inequality is an equality.
